Royalty, Heroism, and the Streets: The Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat
By Robert Farrais Thompson
"My fire can swim me through the frigid water."
Francisco de Quevedo, Amor constante mas allá de la muerte (1)
Some say New York was founded as a way station to the West Indies. Nothing has changed. In the fifties the city rocked to an Afro-Cuban mambo beat (2). Around 1970 a New York-West Indian dance music emerged. It was built on mambo, with jazz trombones blended in. The latinos called it salsa, tremors of which registered, as if upon a seismograph, in 1972:
"Already large chunks of Manhattan have a (...) tropical feel (...). Ecu-adorians are in the streets of Sunnyside; Argentinians read La Prensa on the Flushing IRT. Congas [are played] on the Concourse." (3)
Afro-latinization of New York in the seventies was not only visible. It was an augury:
"Those who kept close to the [Afro-Latin] streets (...) preserved the se-eds of something authentic within themselves. In their refusal to act European, in their struggle to wrest some tropical essence from the stiff and aging baffles of this city, they built the foundation for what seems destined to become the next great subculture [sic] of New York." (4)
In 1977-80 that "next great culture" pulled into station, "hip-hop": bre-ak dance, electric boogie, graffiti, rap (5). The women and men of hip-hop were Anglo-phonic Caribbean and mainland black as well as New York Puerto Rican. This reflected new immigration patterns since 1966. In addition, the Haitian presence burgeoned to the point where by 1985 major dance bands from Port-au-Prince routinely worked the ballro-oms of Queens and Brooklyn.

his role in the larger world, and within the urban multi-ethnic culture of New York.
I have quoted this passage here for a number of reasons. Firstly because it rightfully points to the virtuosity of Basquiat’s performance of as an artist, but also because it qualifies this virtuosity, however naively it may seem, as the virtuosity of an African-American New York artist, whose urban multi-ethnicity is the mark of a chic ‘80s neo-primitivism. In a similar vein, Phoebe Hoban, in her recent and widely distorted biography of Basquiat, A Quick Killing in Art , has described him as “the Jimmi Hendrix of the art world.“ While others, like art dealer Larry Gagosian, have exhibited a condescension and less subtle racism that characterised Basquiat’s relationship with many of those in the white-dominated New York art scene. Gagosian’s memory of first meeting Basquiat is quoted in Hoban’s biography: “I was surprised to see a black artist and particularly one that was—you know—with the hair. I was taken back by it, and kind of put off.“
In his preface to the catalogue for the 1999 Basquiat retrospective at the Museo Revoltella, in Trieste, Bruno Bischofberger (Basquiat’s Swiss dealer), echoing these ideas, wrote:

Graffiti Art, Abstract Expressionism, poetry. One searches for words to describe the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat which is currently on view at the Marcel Sitcoske Gallery, the first solo exhibition of his work in San Francisco. Basquiat's style is deeply rooted in graffiti art. He was closely associated with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring who, in turn, drew inspiration from some of Basquiat's work. The exhibit focuses on works from 1981 to 1985. In addition to paintings and decoupage, the show has a number of works in oil-stick on paper from 1981. The pieces combine words and line drawing in a poetic way that brings to mind haiku. They are thought provoking vignettes, simply presented. The themes explored in this collection are powerful - class struggle, jails, oppression, pop culture. Yet, even in the most desolate images, the artist's sense of humor asserts itself, allowing the viewer to step in and appreciate his perspective.

The art in this exhibition is young and urbane. Some of the artists had origins in the illegal graffiti art in New York in the '80s. Six more or less art-educated men plunged into the established art scene in New York with a new creative energy and an artistic expression which would come to change the contemporary artistic expression completely. Their work was figurative and narrative in a neo-expressionistic style; they painted with references to both popular culture and to traditional art, and they rebelled against movements. They were independent artists. New York was still a roiling melting potwhite art school kids collided with the proto-hip hop funk generation of blacks, Latin music blared from bodegas with new rhythmic ideas tripping from the timbales; Europeans checked into town looking for rock and roll. The price was right. New York was in recession. The East Village, especially Alphabet City looked like postwar Berlin. Its mean streets served as a drug supermarket and its abandoned buildings were squats for young homesteaders. The city was still awesome and sublime, with its towers of glass and steel. It was still the capital of finance, art and culture. But somehow it was perfectly balanced by the ripeness of decay at its edges. The East Village, with its legacy of beatniks and bebop, was the perfect crash pad/launch pad for a revolution. (...) The city possessed qualities that perfectly stimulated the growth of young artists. ( From Glenn O´Brien article in the catalogue)

JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT
(1960-88) Born to middle-class Haitian-American parents, Basquiat was a cardboard box inhabiting graffiti artist of '70s, '80s New York. He was 'discovered' by the influential journalist/poet/critic Rene Ricard, and the Pop Art genius Andy Warhol, who both loved Basquiat's scribbly, colourful, street style. By the time he was 24 years of age, Basquiat had had 23 one-man shows, 43 group shows and had been the subject of over 50 articles in the press. His high-speed rise to fame only fuelled his drug-habit, and in 1988, a year after Andy Warhol died, Basquiat overdosed on heroin. In 1996, Julian Schnabel directed an engaging film about the artist's life in Manhattan in the money-driven eighties.

ARTnews wrote at the time of his death that "Basquiat's talent surpassed his notoriety as the rebellious young artist raging against the commercializing forces of society." In 1982 Basquiat sat for his portrait in the studio of famed Harlem photographer James VanDerZee, who was then ninety-six. After this sitting, Basquiat painted VanDerZee's portrait.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat (left) aka "Samo" with "Wordman" aka Michael Holman (right) working in The Guy's "Canal Zone" 29th April 1979.

Jack Klein, infamous Soho landlord, was interested in attracting investment in his building. The Guy's reputation of having created the original look for Fiorucci , helping Maurice Beidermann to set up YSL ready-to-wear in the US, Trax, Clarets and Unique Clothing Warehouse prompted Klein to propose that The Guy expand the Canal Zone to the lower floors of his Canal Street building.
The Guy attracted people like Keith McNally (who later opened Odeon, Nell's and other clubs), Rudolph (who opened Dancteria) and many more.
The Canal Zone fueled peoples imagination along with the Mudd Club. The avantgarde setting of the Canal Zone and its encouragement of local talent attracted The Tubes (a media parody art-school band), Debbie Harry (Blondie) and the B52's. Even Andy Warhol's jaded entourage, in need of replenishment

Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat is known throughout the art world for his paintings that commented on racism, capitalism, urban street life, and popular culture.
Basquiat was born in Brooklyn in 1960. He began drawing cartoons at age 5 on scraps of paper that his father brought home from his job as an accountant. When he was 8, his mother gave him a copy of Gray's Anatomy, which prompted a lifelong interest in the human figure.
At the age of 17, Basquiat left home. While living in abandoned houses or with friends, he then began to do graffiti work, collaborating with fellow artist and friend, Al Diaz In 1980, Basquiat first displayed his work in The Times Square Show, an exhibition of underground artists. He received positive reviews for his work, and began to sell his paintings.
In 1981 he was invited to show his work in a group of artists that included Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. In 1985, at the age of 24, he appeared on the cover of New York Times Magazine.
Basquiat worked with everything from oil to acrylic paint, to crayon, to color Xerox. He often created collages of words, figures, and symbols drawn from American history and culture. Some of his best known paintings are Self Portrait as a Heel #3, Hollywood Africans, and CPRKR.
