ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE FRENCH The movements of realism and romanticism occupied opposing sides in artistic terms. However, A.L. Barye successfully interposed these two movements into his oeuvre. The paradox was never in conflict, the conflict expressed in his work was only that between the protagonists of predator and prey. The Paris Salon of 1831 was preoccupied with the classicism of Greece and Rome, represented in art by heroes of the Classical period. Barye exhibited in this classically biased Salon without compromise a realistic portrayal of a combat between a Tiger and a Gavial. The image was the very antithesis of the classicism of the period, never before had exotic creatures been portrayed in their raw reality and presented as the subject of a work of art. Barye's first combat scene between the Tiger and Gavial contains characteristics and themes with which he continued to experiment all his life. He portrayed the realism of nature between predator and prey and most often showed the prey defeated, yet still struggling to the end to save its own life. His combat scenes are nearly always the very moment before the final kill. The struggle and friction is a feature Barye exceeded in representing and the combat is never static. His skill at showing the energy of the struggle and antagonism between the protagonists is superior.

INTRODUCTION The Victor Franses Gallery has been situated in its present location in Jermyn Street, St. James's, London since 1972 and specialises in the sought after and much collected work of Les Animaliers, a group of 19th century French sculptors of animal subjects. It is extremely important, now more than ever before, to discriminate between fine quality casts of the 19th century and those poorer quality later casts and imitations that form part of 20th century production. The gallery prides itself in its expertise and knowledge in identifying and providing only the very finest quality and increasingly rare 19th century Animalier bronzes. It is impossible to know precisely how many casts were made of each 19th century model; foundry records do not provide this information. It is only in the 20th century that bronzes began to be numbered in order to reflect the editions of castings. 19th century production however was determined by the popularity of a particular model which dictated how many casts were to be made. An important Romantic sculptor, Antoine-Louis Barye created powerfully naturalistic animal bronzes. His talent and originality helped to make wildlife an acceptable subject for sculpture. The son of a Paris goldsmith, Barye studied art with the sculptor Bosio and the painter Gros. In 1818, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts of the Academie Francais, France's official school of art. Six years later, Barye left the school after failing to win its top honor, the Prix de Rome. He went to work for the goldsmith Fauconnier where he modeled ornaments in the form of animals. He also began his serious study of animals at the Jardin des Plantes, a commitment that led later, in 1854, to his appointment as Master of Zoological Drawing at the Natural History Museum. Breaking with the established sculptural tradition in which man was considered the proper subject for sculpture and animals were only represented in idealized forms, Barye exhibited dramatic and realistic wild animal sculptures at the Salons of the 1830s. His work was critically acclaimed by some reviewers, but spurned by members of the academic art establishment. in 1837, his work was rejected by the Salon's jury and he did not exhibit there again until 1850. During the early part of Barye's career, his most important patron was the Duke of Orleans, son of Louis-Philippe. By the late 1840s, Barye was selling small and medium sized reductions of his large animal sculptures to members of the French middle class. Following the revolution of 1848, the Romantic movement had been accepted, and Barye found himself to be an accepted member of the French art establishment. Official commissions and honors were accorded him for the rest of his life. From the 1860s onward, American collectors were Barye's best patrons. Today, he is represented in more American museums than any other single sculptor.
