Extractions: HOME COMPOSERS Haflidi Hallgrímsson b. One of the most important figures in this flowering of Icelandic music is Haflidi Hallgrímsson, born in 1941 in the small town of Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. He began playing the cello at the age of ten and studied in Reykjavik and at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. On returning from Rome, he continued his studies in London with Derek Simpson at the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the coveted Madame Suggia Prize in 1966. The following year he began compositional studies with Dr Alan Bush and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. On leaving the Academy, he remained in Britain, eventually making his home in Scotland on being appointed Principal Cellist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recently there have been two commissions from the Northlands Festival in Scotland which have demonstrated Hallgrímsson's growing interest in music theatre. 'Mini-Stories' (1997) for narrator and ensemble sets translated texts by the Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms, and since its premiere has been taken up by the Caput Ensemble and the Hebrides Ensemble. Its deft evocation of a unique world of humour, nonsense and melancholy has been widely acclaimed by audiences and critics. In 1998 he wrote 'Ears Stretch a Sensitive Sail' which was premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the Yggdrasil Quartet.

Extractions: "Expert performances throughout" Gramophone Reviews: BBC Music Magazine, June 1995: " Songs from the Exotic , comprising nine new works for voice, clarinet and piano played by TAPESTRY, is an outstanding disc in every way. The performances are exemplary and the stylistic range of music is wide and need not be feared by those wary of contemporary music. Andrew Sparling plays on both C and bass clarinets in addition to the standard B flat instrument and his handling of ethnic-sounding quartertones in Finnissy's Beuk o' Newcassel Sangs is remarkable.

Michael Finnissy 's setting of texts adapted from Joseph Crawhall 's A Beuk o' Newcassel Sangs has justly become something of a classic of its time, with its searing and poignantly expressive use of the C clarinet's microtones and its linear yet rhythmically highly complex piano part.

Extractions: rec Reykjavik 1987 ICELAND MUSIC INFORMATION CENTRE ITM 6-02 This CD has been around for a while. This never stopped the site from reviewing anything. However there are a number of reasons for noting it in some detail now. Firstly the Iceland Music Information Centre received attention from Gramophone several months ago. Secondly Sakari and the Icelandic orchestra have been securing plaudits and celebrity as a result of the recording activities of Chandos (Madetoja, Jon Leifs and Icelandic music), BIS (Leifs Saga Symphony) and Naxos (Sibelius cycle). Thirdly Jon Leifs is commanding increasing attention with a knock-on interest in his land of sagas, geysirs, hotsprings and even Jeremy Clarkson's all terrain vehicle feature on BBC. The well-informed music-lover will know of Jon Leifs as the most famous Icelandic musician. There are others and you can hear four of them on this disc.
