I wish I had this book the first time I tried organic chemistry. It's easy to follow and answers all of the questions from the test book.I highly recommend it.The chapter outlines are a great way to review the material.

extremely well packaged, and arrived on time. It was in the condition as described. Thank you very much!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read
I like the way this book is set up.This makes it easy when you are dealing with a subject matter you may not like that much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good textbook
This textbook does not really cover the fundamentals of organic chemistry but more advance fundamentals. Students really need to have at least two semesters of general chemistry before attempting Organic Chemistry and this textbook is more advanced than what I needed for a two-year college degree. I will be looking for something less advaance and easier for the students to read. The textbook would be excellent for more advance degree seeking students. The students that I have are not chemistry majors. The description of the textbook is misleading. I will not be using this in future semesters. Also for the price, students should have access to study tools online and not be gouged for more money after paying an exuberant price for the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not As Advertised
This book was a complete waste of money for me, do not spend a dime on it.There were NO arrow pushing diagrams or study tips what so ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for chemistry college students
Reading this book brought me back to the time when I started to learn organic chemistry. After one year studying chemistry at the University of Montreal, I managed to find a summer internship position in one of the research labs. Aside from generating a much needed money influx, this was the most incredible opportunity for an undergraduate chemistry student. For 16 weeks, I had a handful of graduate students teaching me the ins and outs of organic chemistry, including mechanistic details and arrow pushing. The book "Arrow pushing in organic chemistry" by Daniel Levy is as close to this as it could be with a book. It demystifies organic chemical reactions because it does not concentrate on the name, the product or the overall transformation but on how it works and why it works that way.

I found the book to be well written with very few typos. The author separated the subject matter in well defined chapters that are arranged in a logical order. Each chapter is illustrated with examples, tables and figures presenting the basic concepts of arrow pushing with all the appropriate explanations. More importantly, each chapter comes with a series of exercises. The author went to great length to provide explanations to all exercises in the second part of the book. This is much more useful than just the answers.

Following an introductory chapter where definitions are provided, a brief discussion on polarization and charges brings the reader to chapter two. This chapter is interesting and very important. It serves as foundations for the remaining of the book. Many key concepts and information are given that will be needed throughout chapters 3-7. Chapter 3 is a natural continuation from the second chapter as the discussion is centered on bases and nucleophiles, including hardness/softness concept. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce substitution reactions (SN2 and SN1), tying in stereogenic implications for both types of substitution. In chapter 5, the author explains solvolysis, carbocations and their stabilities, orbital hybridization, 1,2-hydride and 1,2-alkyl shifts. This leads naturally to the next topic covered in chapter 6. This chapter touches on elimination processes, both unimolecular (E1) and bimolecular (E2).

Chapter 7 discusses addition reactions and introduces the Markovnikov rule. The author finishes this chapter with the first combination of the simple chemical processes (addition-elimination reactions). Chapter 8 prepares the reader to more complex reactions, still using the basic principles of arrow pushing.

There is a very good appendix on pKa values. The second appendix presents all the answers to the exercises found at the end of each chapter. This has tremendous value for any organic chemistry student. Because of the structure of the book, the subject is presented naturally. It flows easily and one builds upon what is presented in the earlier chapters. I would highly recommend this book to any college level student to gain a deep understanding of organic reaction mechanisms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brushing-Up your organic reaction mechanism
This book is very-well written for students who are taking organic reaction mechanism course. It gives acid-base concept of organic molecules which is basis of all organic chemistry including synthesis. Each chapter is followed by problem sets to test students. It is recommended to student of organic chemistry whether you are beginner or practicing organic chemist like myself. The price is also very reasonable. I would say just buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have in organic chemistry
A remarkable book useful for college students, professionals who need the basics to communicate with organic chemists and also anyone else who needs to reconnect with organic mechanisms.

It methodically encompasses all the important concepts of organic chemistry using curved-arrow notation to understand organic reaction mechanisms. All the fundamentals of organic chemistry are presented in a very creative and interactive methodology with exercises and solutions.

Indeed, this book was written by a well-rounded organic chemist who is also an expert in biopharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry. His impressive creativity and his passion in the field led him to come up with an original concept in presenting and communicating those fundamentals. Therefore, every single piece of information presented in this book is clearly detailed and accessible in a snapshot.

"Arrow-Pushing in Organic Chemistry" is very handy and will capture your attention no matter what. This is a must-have on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable contribution
This book hits the mark as a supplement for a typical sophomore-level college organic chemistry class. It is written by an MIT-trained Ph.D. organic chemist and teaches the all-important concept of using curved-arrow notation to understand organic reaction mechanisms. The book is very reasonably priced, explains concepts wel, and provides a rich array or problems for students to work. It is written at a more appropriate level for sophomores than a related book by Grossman, which is excellent for a higher level class. It goes into more depth than a related book by Weeks, which is aimed primarily at students in the first half of a one-year organic chemistry class and is considerably more expensive. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Schaums outline organic chemistry
It was not the updated copy as shown it was an outdated very very old issue, I am very upset by the book, I will hesitate to order anything else from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good practice resource
Everyone can guess that a subject as extensive as Organic Chemistry, making well over thousand pages long textbooks, cannot be packed well with the same concept-teaching potential into a 400-page long outline. The authors make it clear from the very first page that to really master a subject one has to practice, practice, and again practice. The word "Outline" may serve a bad service to those who think this book is as shallow as, say, "Organic Chemistry Demystified". It is not, and in fact it's probably too advanced for those who rate this book low. On the other hand, "Outline" also serves a bad service to the book itself, as those seeking a more advanced practice may not even consider it. I would rather call it Intermediary Organic Chemistry. But I bet if you do find time to go thru every problem in the book you will never be the same person again as before.

3-0 out of 5 stars Planet Orgo...
I am giving this book 3 stars because I did not receive much help from it.A lot of the information that was covered in this book did not go into enough detail, like an entire subject was explained in two sentences. I needed a little more explanation, but I guess this is why the book is deemed an outline.

I was able to gather some (a very small amount) useful information from it. But, pick the book up anyway, because to master Orgo you need as many resources as possible, especially at 3 in the morning and you are trying to figure out where to place an ethyl group. In addition to this book, grab an elementary type orgo book, like orgo for beginners or orgo for nursing majors. These type of books explain things with great detail using an ABC approach. Then do as many problems as you can! Buy a ring of notecards and write part of the reaction on the front and the rest on the back. Study these cards every night religiously. You should be able to make sense out of the reactions and pass the class with a good grade with a considerable amount of study. (I received an A using the above method)

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect
Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars So you want to do better at Organic?
What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar.Whether that is worth the cost is another question. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
Wow- this textbook was a fantastic purchase. Competitively priced, in great condition, and with decent shipping, I would totally recommend this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars good times with orgo
Yes I used this book for 2 semesters of organic chem. The class wasn't fun but atleast this book was pretty good. It describes alot of the tough stuff in detail and has great summaries at the end of each chapter. It is worth the money and if you fail the class you sure cant blame it on this book. ALSO buy it used b/c the new one is much too expensive and turns out you may not like orgo that much anyway haha

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, especially with abstract ideas, but lacking in some practical matters.
I found this book to be quite excellent; it was used for an undergraduate course which I dropped, but I found the book so useful that I kept it.I find that this book is clearer than many professors. The strengths of this book are that it does a good job of discussing unifying themes, patterns, etc.The weaknesses are that it presents a somewhat abstract, idealized view of the subject, with little or no discussion of practical concerns or connections to other subjects. The author does not do a very good job of pointing the reader towards further reading, or discussing the ways in which one might pursue deeper questions.

One of the other reviewers complained that this book has too much explanation--I think this extra discussion of the "how" and "why" is actually critical for learning the subject of O. chem. Many students find organic chemistry difficult because they approach it as a collection of random facts to be memorized. In this book, the author consistently discusses unifying themes, and weaves specific facts together with general principles into a coherent fabric of ideas. This makes otherwise painful material seem natural and easy--for the students who have the patience to read every paragraph thoroughly.(Students who don't want to do this, in my opinion, have no business taking O. Chem).

The weaknesses of this book is that it is too idealized and perhaps at times too abstract. While the book does discuss reaction mechanisms and synthesis techniques, they are done in an overly idealized way.The author presents a very classical (and I would even go so far as to say short-sighted) view of Chemistry in which byproducts of reactions are totally ignored.Someone interested in chemical engineering, for instance, will likely find this book inadequate for their needs.Similarly, people interested in Biology and Biochemistry will find that this book does not make or even set up any of the obvious connections to these subjects. The thoughtful reader will find too many questions that arise naturally in the text that are not even mentioned, let alone addressed.Similarly, there is very little discussion of health and environmental issues associated with the various families of compounds. This is a shame, because the general trends and patterns in the toxicity and hazards associated with various compounds are intimately related to the trends and patterns in molecule structure and form that are discussed in this book.

Overall, this is an above-average text that is well-suited for use as a textbook in a basic organic chemistry class.I think it is exceptionally well-suited to self-study.In either case, however, readers interested in chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry, and/or environmental issues, would need to rely on supplementary materials to address some of the omissions I described above.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry Text
An excellent text book for an introduction to Organic Chemistry, comprehensive and well structured.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent resource for Orgo beginners
Orgo (I, II) was the most difficult subject I EVER had. I've taken both sections over and went through 2 books. The strengths of this particular book are its reaction summaries: before introducing a topic, the author dedicates a page or two to summarizing the reactions that lead up to this topic and then summarizes the reactions of the topic once he's through explaining it. Example: 'Reactions That Yield Alcohols' and then `Reactions of Alcohols'. Summaries are accompanied by short, yet thorough descriptions. With elaborate and comprehensive reaction mechanisms, this book is more of a reference that a textbook, although the text is inclusive and relatively simple. If you understand the lectures and use this book for mechanisms, reactions and problems, rather that for understanding concepts, you'll be fine.

One major weakness of this book is the NMR IR Spectroscopy section, which does a poor job of explaining this easy but confusing topic. Another shortcoming -- the only all-inclusive table of functional groups is provided in the index at the very back of the book, so you'll have to make a copy to keep it handy at all times. The problems deserve a mention -- most are simple and repetitive, those who do them get the grades.

A general note to the beginners: ALLNIGHTERS BEFORE ORGO EXAMS DO NOT WORK (even if you put Ritalin in your coffee)!!! Do yourselves a big favor, study constantly through the semester and just review before the exam. Concentrate on mechanisms and problems rather than on theory and you will successed. Remember -- memorization comes from doing problems and not from repeating a reaction 10 times in a row. All the luck in the world to the brave souls who register for o-chem!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Book!
Wow!This is a great organic text! After taking undergraduate organic courses, I faced the graduate cume for organic chemistry, which I failed miserably.I bought this book after seeing many high reviews, and let me just say that they were right. This text is like a lecture in a book.It offers a less tradition order of presenting organic chemistry, but I have now begun to grasp this seemingly impossible subject with this 'new British method'.It explains everything. It doesn't leave something out for you to wonder about why it is the way it is.(However, because of this, the text is pretty lengthy.)

This book helps you to understand organic chemistry-- not memorizing reactions, but understanding the concepts behind the reactions (movement of electrons, electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, etc.) so that you can very accurately predict the product of a reaction that you have never seen and propose a very likely mechanism.

Another great thing about this text is that the problem sets at the end of every chapter are not 30 problems long. There are an average of, I would say, 8-10 problems at the end of each chapter, and with the solutions manual for this text, I think that anyone can learn, really learn organic chemistry.

The only flaw in this book is that there are some errors, which I am sure they have supplemented online, I just haven't looked, but this is to be expected for a first edition.Overall, highly recommended for undergraduates and graduate students alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written solutions manual

This book is helpful for an organic chemistry class, maybe for a review to strengthen your organic chemistry background for a pharmacology course or pharmacy school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Organic Review
I purchased this in order to prepare myself for an medicinal chemistry course, and was able to chew through it slowly in about 2 weeks.I have not had organic chemistry in 3 years, and it was a fantastic source for bringing old knowledge, and some new, to the forefront of my mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save the money, use it towards the purchase of a Medicinal Chemistry Book
This book is good if you want a quick read on FGs in Medicinal Chemistry, you can read it in 3 sessions and pick up some concepts here and there, but you will need to look in other places to expand your knowledge more in depth. For that, I would rather save the money and use it towards the purchase of a good medicinal chemistry book, where you will find the same information and more.... don't get me wrong, this book here is perfect if you have to travel or commute to work by bus or train and need some reading, but to learn beyond it, then this is not for you,

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book
I had to purchase this book for a Principles of Drug Action class in pharmacy school. The book is pretty easy to read but very brief on all topics. This makes for a quick read but if you don't understand a topic, you will have to look elsewhere because there is simply not much 'depth' here.Overall a good review if organic is fairly fresh and will probably serve as a good primer but you will need other texts for depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Great book because it shows mechanisms. Also has extra questions throughout and at the end of each chapter.Good tool if you like to study on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student perspective - Anslyn/Iverson - UT
Though the book itself does have some errors, that's why there are new editions!

first of all, i took the class with Anslyn and Iverson at the University Of Texas, two of the authors of the book and they are one of the most brilliant professors I've met.The book is written so that students can understand clearly and that the main points of organic chemistry is stressed. These two professors are not only proficient in the subject, but they are also really excellent lecturers.Being a good professor doesn't mean they can express what they say to words. But this book really proves it.It's easy to read and you won't feel stupid when reading it like numerous science textbooks. The format and work out problems are proficient and go full circle with things that are encounter in life like drugs, cloths, food, etc..all the things this world is made out of is correlated with organic chem.

Pros:
-easy to read
-good examples
-correlates to life

Cons:
-price
-some errors

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for self-studiers - Pick a text that includes an answer key instead!
I am currently using this text in my organic chemistry lecture.I find the chapters in the text to be relatively straightforward and concise, but I'm really irritated that the book does not contain any sort of answer key for the end-of-chapter problems.

To be fair, there are solutions for the handful of problems that are in the middle of the chapter, but these problems are few in number and are very simple, so they are insufficient for drilling/practicing the concepts. The problems at the end of the chapter are much harder and more numerous, but it is pointless to try these problems without the solutions manual because there is no answer key for them in the book.

Every other science text I've had has had an answer key for the odd-numbered problems at the end of the chapter. The solutions manual was only necessary if you wanted answers to the even-numbered problems, or if you needed detailed explanations of how to arrive at the correct answers. For this text, you have to drop an additional $100+ to get any form of answer key. This is a blatant rip-off by the publisher, at a time when textbooks and college tuition fees are already high enough.

If you're a self-studier, I would recommend choosing a different textbook that does include an answer key, even if it's only for the odd-numbered problems. If you are a professor, I would recommend choosing such a text as well.If you are enrolled in a course that uses this textbook, I guess you're stuck in the same position I am in, having to shell out the extra $100 for something that should have been included in the book in the first place.

Product Description
This bestselling standard, now in its fifth, completely revised English edition, is an excellent source of technological and economic information on the most important precursors and intermediates used in the chemical industry. Both a handbook and ready reference, this volume has a uniform structure for ease of use, with a number of fold-out flow charts illustrating complex chemical processes, plus summaries and relevant statistical data in the margins. The text is rounded off by a comprehensive list of references and a detailed subject index.

From reviews of previous editions (authored by K. Weissermel/H.-J. Arpe)

"This book is an immensely comprehensive and practical work. University chemistry students would benefit from reading this book as it provides a valuable insight into chemical technology, which is often lacking in undergraduate chemistry courses. The university lecturer can obtain examples of applied organic syntheses and keep up to date with the constant changes in chemical manufacturing. It should appeal most to chemists and engineers in the chemical industry, who should benefit from the technological, scientific and economic interrelationships and their potential developments." (Synthesis - Journal of Synthetic Organic Chemistry)

"It would be unkind and misleading to call this book a poor man's Kirk Othmer, but it could almost be described as an encyclopedia... it is easy to read and one has to admire the authors' dedication and endeavor in getting so much into a single volume. They have provided a book that is interesting reading as well as being an excellent reference. It is a highly recommended book, which I hope the authors will find the energy to continue updating on a regular basis." (Chemistry in Britain)

"...it should be ready to hand to every chemist or process engineer involved directly or indirectly with industrial organic chemistry. It should be in the hand of every higher-graduate student, especially if chemical technology is not part of the study, like in many college universities..." (Tenside-Surfactants-Detergents)

"Whether student or scientist, theorist or practician - everybody interested in industrial organic chemistry will appreciate this work. ..." (farbe + lack) ... Read more

Dr. Ege taught me organic chemistry when I took organic chemistry in my undergraduate. She is one of not many chemists I have seen thus far that can present her expertise in such a friendly and simple manner.I used her text as a textbook for class and this book gave me valuable knowledge ofChemistry. This new edition has been recently updated and Dr. Ege stillmaintains her unique talent in making difficult subject easy. For thosewho are afraid of taking this burdensome class. Try reading this text anddo the problem sets given at the end of each chapter.I am sure that youwill love organic chemistry like thousands of Dr. Ege's students.Thisbook is well organized, clear, comprehensive and ideal for futurereference. It may seem too expensive, but you pay a little more for a muchbetter one... ... Product Description
The first edition of this book achieved considerable success due to its ease of use and practical approach, and to the clear writing style of the authors. The preparation of organic compounds is still central to many disciplines, from the most applied to the highly academic and, more tan ever is not limited to chemists. With an emphasis on the most up-to-date techniques commonly used in organic syntheses, this book draws on the extensive experience of the authors and their association with some of the world's mleading laboratories of synthetic organic chemistry. In this new edition, all the figures have been re-drawn to bring them up to the highest possible standard, and the text has been revised to bring it up to date.

Written primarily for postgraduate, advanced undergraduate and industrial organic chemists, particularly those involved in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and other areas of fine chemical research, the book is also a source of reference for biochemists, biologists, genetic engineers, material scientists and polymer researchers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book for synthetic organic chemist
This book is a great book to learn about doing synthetic organic chemistry in the laboratory.
It touches every area where a synthetic organic chemist may have problem. It's a good book in every respect. As with all books there is room for improvement. Some aspects needs to be more detailed and specific. This will make the book to be the best in market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
As a physical chemist/spectroscopist by training who suddenly found myself needing to synthesize & characterize some model compounds for my experiments, I found this book to be a very helpful review of modern synthetic techniques, particularly in regards to purifying starting materials, dealing with air-sensitive compounds, and monitoring the reaction's progress. Definitely a recommended reference for any chemist. It's companion, "Advanced Practical Inorganic and Metalorganic Chemistry", is also highly recommended, though if I had to choose between the two I'd say that "Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry" is most useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemists and Students Must Have!
The book discusses fundamental techniques in organic laboratory.Topics that I found very useful are running the reaction (i.e. air-sensitive and water-sensitive chemistry), monitoring reaction (i.e.thin-layer chromatography), working up reaction (have you wondered why ammonium chloride is a good reagent to work up the reaction? how to efficiently separate layers without emulsions?, etc), purifying compounds (i.e. distillation, recrystallization, determining the sizes of columns, choice of eluting solvents,...)The book should be on the shelf of every chemist. ... Product Description
This best-seller bears the hallmark of all John McMurry’s books.  On style, it is concise and avoids the ‘wordiness’ of most GOB texts.  On substance, it is unusual in its balance of chemical concepts to explain the quantitative aspects of chemistry, and provides greater depth of insight into the theoretical chemical principles.  This makes for a wider spectrum of the different angles from which to view chemistry, and thus, captures a greater number of readers. With a focus on problem solving and engaging discussions of relevant applications, this volume effectively covers the essentials of allied health chemistry and puts it in the context of everyday life. This revision adds two new authors; the author team now includes a specialist in each specific area of GOB (David Ballantine, General Chemistry; Carl Hoeger, Organic Chemistry; Virginia Peterson, Biochemistry). Measurements, Atoms and Elements, Nuclear Radiation, Compounds and Their Bonds, Chemical Reactions and Quantities, Energy and Matter, Gases, Solutions, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Alkanes, Unsaturated Hydrocarbons, Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers, and Thiols, Aldehydes, Ketones, and Chiral Molecules, Carbohydrates, Carboxylic Acids and Esters, Lipids, Amines and Amides, Amino Acids and Proteins, Enzymes and Vitamins, Nucleic Acid and Protein Synthesis, Metabolic Pathways for Carbohydrates Metabolic Pathways and Energy Production, Metabolic Pathways for Lipids and Amino Acids. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Mechanistic Bible
I used this book, as a visiting scholar at Oxford, and was captivated by the author's presentation of my most disliked area of Undergraduate chemistry. Peter Sykes, has accomplished a certain level of intellectual simplification evidenced in this book, that has made it enjoyable and more importantly, fluid. He does not belabor the material and his book is one of the few on the subject, that was genuinely written to be read.
I definitely recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book has good sides and bad sides
The book is a condensed source of information of various different subjects relating to organic chemistry. In saying so it is a general overview of practical organic chemistry. Sykes is clear in his explanation and elucidation on various reaction mechanisms and as he states early on, he does promote a mechanistic perspective of organic chemistry.

Sykes is particularly useful for individuals who have done introductory organic chemistry and are venturing into deeper topics of the subject, i.e. stereochemistry and synthesis as examples (a lot of universities offer courses which purely concentrate on these regions of study).

Now the greatest downfall I see about the text is the price. March's advanced organic chemistry is much more extensive, newer and my personal opinion is that the authorship is better in March's

Another downfall is the age, although a lot of the topics that have been introduced in this book have not changed significantly and therefore dont seriously affect the text's validity; I still feel it should have had an update. This book was published in the 1980's (the late era of the decade).

All I am saying is that Syke's book is a classic, one can learn a lot from it and it is a fairly good reference book, however to my understanding there are better texts of the same genre covering practically the same themes as in this book.

I would strongly recommend any individual interested in this book to have a look at March's Advanced Organic Chemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
I have read this book. Nothing genuine about this book! The content has no difference than that of any textbooks. I threw this book in the trash can. I don't want to resell it because I don't want to waste other people's money and time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Organic Chemistry
Peter Sykes' guidebook formats more as a reference to organic reactionssuch as nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic substitution, nucleophilicaddition to carbonyl, elimination reactions, radical reactions andsymmetry-controlled reactions such as pericyclic reactions. It is wellwritten, clear, and succinct that undergraduate and graduate students willwelcome it as a companion to an organic course.Sykes also discussestopics that are often omitted in an introductory text such as carbocations,electron-deficient species, carbanions, and linear free energyrelationships. It can be thought of a compact version of Jerry March'sAdvanced Organic Chemistry, which is widely used as a graduate text.As apurchase guideline, I also purchased Hoffman's "Organic Chemistry: AnIntermediate Text", and Bernard Miller's "Advanced OrganicChemistry", which treat the subject of electrocyclic reactions andcycloaddition more thoroughly. The portable size of Sykes makes it anexcellent source of reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern classic
This book was recommended to me by a senior lecturer in Organic Chemistry at a Scottish university: A fine British gentleman - and a fine recommendation.

I have valued this book's clarity ever since and return to it again and again, although my current scientific work involves little organic chemistry. The book's presentation is hugely considerate to beginners and sympathetic of their problems. Even advanced chemists will appreciate its clear and insightful presentation of the logic behind organic reaction mechanisms.

Peter Sykes' book is certainly a model of clarity and to my mind perhaps the best book ever written on this vast subject. It is certainly my favorite organic chemistry book: All the explanations are clear and helpful; one is never (or very rarely) left dangling at the end of a presentation wondering just what in the world is going on, as seems to happen too often in other texts.

Sykes starts at the basic level of structure and reactivity, proceeds to acid/base equilibria, and addresses subsequent chapters to electrophilic, nucleophilic, radical, carbanion/carbocation reactions, Hammett plots, etc.

Really a wonderful read and an outstanding short reference. Certainly an excellent investment for anyone interested in organic chemistry. How odd most Americans are unfamiliar with it.

(If you value Sykes' presentation, the Royal Society of Chemistry used to have several audio cassettes of his presentations on organic chemistry.) ... Read more
