good text book
has lots of current data partaning to the environmental hazards and how we are leaving a carbon footprint that needs to decrease.

Good environmental chemistry book
This text was required for a Water and Wastewater chemistry class, but the information contained in it, far surpasses what was needed for class. I kept this book as I can see myself using it again in the future.

Great Environmental Chem Text
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized.Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!

Good presentation of a broad topic.
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying tounderstand an environmental problem, especially if the readers backgroundin chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level. ... Read more

Perhaps a good reference text, but it's supposed to be a graduate intro text
Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size.It is a monstrously large book.However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field.Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject.A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.

It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material.However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on.This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students.Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.

not authentic
the text I received is much thicker (nearly 2x the size) than the original 1300 page text which makes for a very heavy load.The images are much darker than those it was compared to as well. I can only assume that this text is not authentic.

Good but complicated
I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.
So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this isyour core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.

Title is deceiving
Despite the equal treatment in the Intro, which misleads the reader that there will be air and solid waste chemistry, there is practically no in-depth discourse on these areas, as if they are not part of the subject. The basic Ideal Gas and Henry's Laws are covered handbook style, but in the chapters on Nitrogen and Sulfates, there is not a single mention of SOx and NOx, nor any discussion on composting and two pages on biodegradation. The title is misleading..should be Environmental Chemistry for Water Treatment. And the section on Total Alkalinity is designed to confuse the student. Many of you know what I mean. There is a ton of texts in this general area, and the best intermediate (and appropriately titled) one is by Spiro and Stagliani.

Absolutely the worst chemistry text ever.Period.
As a chemist with a bachelor's and a doctorate, I've seen quite a few books on the subject.I can say with 100% certainty that this is the worst chemistry text ever.This book spews equations at the reader but does not connect any of the concepts.Key steps are left out of the explanations.The reader is left wondering how the authors got to the end of a multi-step problem in one step.Books like this one are what make students hate chemistry.Do yourself a favor and get any other chemistry book.

If you want to know it all....
If you want to know it all about chemistry, this is the book for you.Covers general, physical, equilibrium, organic, bio-, colloid and nuclear chemistry in addition to all the environmental and wastewater chemistry.Take the time to read the chapters slowly and carefully, as almost every sentence contains vital information that you have to know.Fairly easy to follow and the example problems give good explanations.Downsides are that there are very few pictures and there could be more example problems.

Overpriced piece of junk
What a terrible book. I am currently taking an environmental chemistry course, and I'm learning more from my freshman Chem 101 notes and wikipedia than I am from this book. The chapters are too brief to even teach a topic, the examples aren't explained well, you have no idea what is truly going on because facts are simply thrown at you, and overall, this book makes you hate environmental chemistry.

Additionally, the book is exorbitantly priced, as there are NO illustrations whatsoever and the inside looks like some cheap international edition - no color, maybe a scatter plot here and there. It is impossible to visualize any concepts that the book discusses. The authors are probably snoozing in their mansions right now as miserable students attempt to learn from this worthless piece of trash. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

"Chemistry" is a misleading title.
I disagree with the previous reviewers that this book is for intermediate and advanced chemistry use.It is very basic and doesn't deal too heavily in chemistry at all.Anyone with a basic high school or college chemistry course could easily understand the text.I had assumed more chemistry was in the book and consider the title to be misleading.If you understand chemistry, don't make the mistake I did.Save your money and buy a different book.

Valuable text for any level
Principles of Environmental Chemistry is an in-depth and easy to follow textbook. I recently completed an undergraduate course which used this book as the only major text, and I found it more than sufficent. It does an excellent job of providing real world applications of chemical knowledge to address the major environmental concerns of our time.

It should also be noted that while I came from a strong chemistry background, some of the students in the course did not. While my knowledge certainly gave me an advantage, it was in no means necessary for understanding the text. Despite the vast coverage of chemical issues in the environment, the book is user friendly to those coming from biological or even social science backgrounds. It also offers quick reviews of organic chemistry and the like, but wisely puts such things in the appendix opposed to bogging down the chapters.

I would highly recommend this textbook for any course or person seeking to explore environmental issues from a chemical perspective. It is valuable for chemistry majors and minors, but still accessible to those in other fields.

Congratulations to Dr. Weiner!
Congratulations to Dr. Weiner for his expanded and more comprehensive second edition of Applications of Environmental Aquatic Chemistry.

This revised book is a must for people like me who make their living in the field of water resources engineering where we regularly need to deal with environmental chemistry.

This no-nonsense book starts right out with a bang in Chapter 1 with ten numerical explanations of concentration in forms such as mg/L, moles, and ppm.He then tells how to use concentrations to predict precipitate; all things we think we know but need a refresher when writing a report.

I like his extensive use of examples because Weiner takes the reader through straightforward calculations that can help make an ordinary civil engineer look like an expert.At the back of the book, Weiner has a thorough 24-page index which means that the book is readily useable without searching.For instance, under lead, you will find five different pages clearly identified as to what aspect of lead is explained there.

Weiner's Chapter 8 on Biodegradation and Bioremediation, alone, is worth the price of the book, which can be repaid with just one hazardous waste "cure" project for a discerning client.

Dr. Weiner gets down to essentials in this book that is written for busy inquisitive engineers and groundwater hydrologists who want to be credible.His wide use of "rules of thumb" resulted in my using a lot of sticky notes to index my copy of the book for quick reference.

While the book is tailor-made for environmental engineers and water resources practitioners, the more serious chemist will find a wealth of information on how their knowledge can be translated and used by practicing water generalists.For the environmental chemist, the book is a good primer on how to use a detailed knowledge of chemistry to solve everyday problems in the real world.In some ways, we can call this book a good example of technology transfer, i.e., how to translate complex science into practical terms for the water quality practitioner.

In summary, Dr. Weiner's guide on environmental chemistry is a "must have" for consulting engineers of almost any discipline if for no other reason than it is a quick read and a good reference that can help the practicing engineering professional be comfortable when dealing with issues involving chemistry.

No problems
This book was exactly what I needed and I got it quickly with no problems!

Environmental Chemistry contains the essentiel concepts to the practice
and the understanding of industrial ecology and green chemistry. The
structure of the book is very clear. It is a greate pleasure to reed it.

Good Reference Text; Poor Class Text
I used this text a few years ago when I was writing a paper on ethics of pesticide use, and it certainly details information well. However, the general tone is often anal and the writing style is extremely drab. Most ofthe diagrams included were generated using low-budget graphics software,andit shows.At 811 pages, this is an overly long book and not all thechapters (24 total) can be covered in a single Echem course. Also, there isno solutions manual and the problems Manahan gives are challening (asection of numerical solutions placed in the back of the text would havebeen nice...)This is a good reference text, butif you're looking for asemester-long or short-term text to use for an Echem course, use Baird'stext, not Manahan's.

Overall subject matter is thoroughly interesting. Though, i feel that some equations and procedures to answer questions is not address well. The plus side is that the book is not too thick and over-flowing with excess information. I like the book, but i can not compare it with any other environmental chemistry book because i have never used the book.

Finally someone gets it right
I've been looking for this book. Other environmental chemistry textbooks cover too many topics: environmental analysis, ecotoxicology, and environmental engineering are common. This one gets it just right: thechemistry of the air, water and soil (including common pollutants) at thelevel of a undergraduate sophomore- or junior-level course. The text ischallenging enough for chemistry majors but not too intimidating for thebiology majors interested in the field.

My only quibbles: not much aboutenvironmental modeling of the chemical composition of important systems,still not quite advanced enough (but better than current general textbookson the topic), and it's missing some important topics (groundwaterattenuation, for example). Excellent Book about Environmental Soil Chemistry
Professor Donald L. Sparks has managed to write an excellent and up-to-date book on important topics related to environmental soil chemistry. The book covers all the essential subjects needed for an in-depth understanding of all the complex soil processes that control the fate and transport of both inorganic and organic contaminants in the environment. The book also includes good descriptions of state-of-the-art instrumentations used in environmental soil chemistry such as synchrotron radiation-based X-ray techniques. I use this book in my course entitled "Soil and Environmental Chemistry" and the book has the perfect length for a one semester course and the students like it. I can highly recommend this book for both undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals.
