Product Description
Fluorine chemistry is an expanding area of research that is attracting international interest, due to the impact of fluorine in drug discovery and in clinical and molecular imaging (e.g. PET, MRI). Many researchers and academics are entering this area of research, while scientists in industrial and clinical environments are also indirectly exposed to fluorine chemistry through the use of fluorinated compounds for imaging. This book provides an overview of the impact that fluorine has made in the life sciences. In the first section, the emphasis is on how fluorine substitution of amino acids, peptides, nucleobases and carbohydrates can provide invaluable information at a molecular level. The following chapters provide answers to the key questions posed on the importance of fluorine in drug discovery and clinical applications. For examples, the reader will discover how fluorine has found its place as a key element improving drug efficacy, with reference to some of the best-selling drugs on the market. Finally, a thorough review on the design, synthesis and use of 18F-radiotracers for positron emission tomography is provided, and this is complemented with a discussion on how 19F NMR has advanced molecular and clinical imaging. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A thourogh comprehensive view of medicinal chemistry
This volume is everything that one can ask for those wondering how drugs perform the functions that they do. The baseline for Foye's explanation lies in the description of the receptor involved. From there he can explain how the natural substrate fits either the active or allosteric site of the target molecule. From this point the authors are able to elucidate chemically how the functional groups of the pharmicological compound interact with the receptor evoking the desired response. ... Read more

Product Description
Fully updated and rewritten by a basic scientist who is also a practicing physician, the third edition of this popular textbook remains comprehensive, authoritative and readable. Taking a receptor-based, target-centered approach, it presents the concepts central to the study of drug action in a logical, mechanistic way grounded on molecular and principles.Students of pharmacy, chemistry and pharmacology, as well as researchers interested in a better understanding of drug design, will find this book an invaluable resource.

Starting with an overview of basic principles, Medicinal Chemistry examines the properties of drug molecules, the characteristics of drug receptors, and the nature of drug-receptor interactions. Then it systematically examines the various families of receptors involved in human disease and drug design. The first three classes of receptors are related to endogenous molecules: neurotransmitters, hormones and immunomodulators.Next, receptors associated with cellular organelles (mitochondria, cell nucleus), endogenous macromolecules (membrane proteins, cytoplasmic enzymes) and pathogens (viruses, bacteria) are examined. Through this evaluation of receptors, all the main types of human disease and all major categories of drugs are considered.

There have been many changes in the third edition, including a new chapter on the immune system. Because of their increasingly prominent role in drug discovery, molecular modeling techniques, high throughput screening, neuropharmacology and genetics/genomics are given much more attention. The chapter on hormonal therapies has been thoroughly updated and re-organized.Emerging enzyme targets in drug design (e.g. kinases, caspases) are discussed, and recent information on voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels has been incorporated. The sections on antihypertensive, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiarrhythmic, and anticancer drugs, as well astreatments for hyperlipidemia and peptic ulcer, have been substantially expanded. One new feature will enhance the book's appeal to all readers: clinical-molecular interface sections that facilitate understanding of the treatment of human disease at a molecular level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Goodman and Gilman for pharmacy students
I have taken two pharmacological type classes. One was pharmacology and the other was simply med chem. We used Goodman and Gilman in the pharmacology class and its just too dense. It has much information, but in my opinion, its not appropriate for a textbook. I thought that this book, by Nogrady is alot more managable. However, you need to have a background in biochemistry and organic chemistry to understand some of the topics in this book. It does a good job of explaining underlying mechanisms of pharmaceutical actions. Towards the end, it adopts a Goodman and Gilman approach and just starts listing drugs and their mechanism of action. However, Nogrady doesn't go on for 5 pages like Goodman and Gilman do. Its a bit more concise. Anyway, I don't mean to say that Goodman and Gilman is a bad book, quite the contrary, its an amazing book with more information than one could ever possibly want. Its just that if you want to understand pharmacology for a class, and are not browsing the pages for fun over a cup of tea, Nogrady may be the way to go. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the third edition of a book written to serve both as a useful textbook for undergraduate courses in medicine and pharmacology, and also as a handy reference title for industry professionals. Each of the 27 chapters is sub-divided into 3 sections: (i) an introduction to the subject, (ii) a chemical or pharmacological classification -– each category of compound importantly contains International Non-proprietory Names (INN), British Approved Names (BAN) and United States Approved Names (USAN) wherever applicable, chemical names and proprietory names. (iii) the synthesis of various important members treated individually, a brief description of the synthesis, therapeutic applications of each compound, the necessary dosage applied in various diseases, and routes of administration. The book also deals well with the comprehensive mechanism of actions of the structure -– activity -– relationships (SARs); thus aiding the students' understanding. Clearly written, well referenced and fully up to date with recommended readings and self assessment questions, Prof. Kar has provided an accessible textbook for students of medicinal chemistry.

Product Description
Most medicinal chemists working in the pharmaceutical industry are organic synthetic chemists with little or no background in medicinal chemistry. These chemists must acquire a good knowledge of medicinal chemistry during their firstyears in the pharmaceutical/drug discovery industry. This bookaims to be their practical handbook - a complete guide to the drug discovery process.

The book reviews practical aspects of Medicinal Chemistry, emphasising the daily problems met by the medicinal chemist when dealing with lead discovery/identification methodologies, with structure-activity relationship studies aimed to scale up potency and target selectivity, and when optimising pharmacokinetic and pharmaceutical properties by means of ultimate chemical modifications.

This is the second edition of The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry, the first edition being published in February 1996.The new edition is thoroughly revised, with around 30% new material, and refocussed to reflect the recent developments in genomics, proteomics, high throughput screening of compounds and drug solubilisation. An effort has been made to remove the overlap that exists in the previous edition and four new chapters have been introduced.

* Written by experts in the field
* The first edition of The Practice of Medicinal Chemistry, published in 1996, was nicknamed 'The Bible' by medicinal chemists.
* The only available book dealing with the practical aspects of medicinal chemistry, from conception of the molecules through to the production of drugs
* An essential practical handbook for the medicinal chemist, working in the pharmaceutical industry, withlittle or no background in medicinal chemistry-a complete guide to the drug discovery process. ... Read more

This work brigdges the compartmentalized undergraduate organic and biochemistry and biology subjects to the pharmacology and the clinical areas a modern pharmacy practice requires. The changes and constantly increasing responsibilities of today's pharmacist have dictated a restructuring of the pharmacy curriculum, including individual course content. This book reflects and addresses these developments. This is a well-written work that covers most major areas of pharmaceutical research. The text is presented in a logical and concise fashion being divided into chapters based upon therapeutic topic. This makes the work very useful for teaching a course in medicinal chemistry since therapeutic areas can be separately covered without having to make use of the entire book which overall contains a tremendous amount of information. This book is a significant contribution to understanding what medicinal chemistry is and how this science is used to develop new therapeutic agents. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Professors: please don't get this book for your class!
It amazes me that a book in its 6th edition would still have so many errors. In chapter 2 alone I found 5 errors. As a student, it makes me wonder how many more errors there are that I am just accepting as fact.It provides sparse case studies, but the answers are not given in the book, and many of the answers are not given online either to the students, and are only available for professors to see.Perhaps wait for the 7th edition to come out, and hope that they iron out the mistakes they made in this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Med Chem Text
I haven't actually used this book yet (so far the professor has given us excellent notes), but it is full of information that I'll probably use when I need to review everything. Very comprehensive for reviewing a specific topic, but a bit boring to just read.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the recommended book for my program.
What can I say, this book is great. A terrific resource for the study of Medicinal Chemistry. It's what the faculty recommend using for my Medicinal Chemistry program, and it is often referenced by professors.
