Product Description
Here at last is the eagerly awaited new novel from New York Times bestselling author Gail Godwin. Queen of the Underworld is sweeping and sultry literary fiction, featuring a memorable young heroine and engaging characters whose intimate dramas interconnect with hers.
In the summer of 1959, as Castro clamps down on Cuba and its first wave of exiles flees to the States to wait out what they hope to be his short-lived reign, Emma Gant, fresh out of college, begins her career as a reporter. Her fierce ambition and belief in herself are set against the stories swirling around her, both at the newspaper office and in her downtown Miami hotel, which is filling up with refugees.
Emma’s avid curiosity about life thrives amid the tropical charms and intrigues of Miami. While toiling at the news desk, she plans the fictional stories she will write in her spare time. She spends her nights getting to know the Cuban families in her hotel–and rendezvousing with her married lover, Paul Nightingale, owner of a private Miami Beach club.
As Emma experiences the historical events enveloping the city, she trains her perceptive eye on the people surrounding her: a newfound Cuban friend who joins the covert anti-Castro training brigade, a gambling racketeer who poses a grave threat to Paul, and a former madam, still in her twenties, who becomes both Emma’s obsession and her alter ego. Emma’s life, like a complicated dance that keeps sweeping her off her balance, is suddenly filled with divided loyalties, shady dealings, romantic and professional setbacks, and, throughout, her adamant determination to avoid “usurpation” by others and remain the protagonist of her own quest.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to like main character and little plot
I really like Gail Godwin and have enjoyed many of her books. I grabbed this one off the shelf in my local library and expected an enjoyable and sensitive book. Unfortunately it was not the case. In addition to the lack of plot and flat narrative, I just didn't like Emma and couldn't figure out what about her was supposed to be interesting. She seemed to just walk through life, expecting to be famous, resenting not being important (she wasn't) and having as affair with a married man with no qualms. The setting and time period had such potential but it was not fulfilled in this book. Most disappointing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Torture...
There aren't too many books that I've read that I've disliked from start to finish.I'm reluctant to give up on a book--sometimes stories that start out slow come to a roaring finish.I was hoping for something similar when I started Gail Godwin's Queen of the Underworld. Was I mistaken! This book was absolute torture, and I hate admitting this as I generally enjoy Gail Godwin. Her Father Melancholy's Daughter is one of my very favorite books.

Emma Gant is fresh out of college when she gets a job as a reporter for the Miami Star.Fidel Castro has just taken over Cuba and Miami is being overrun by prominent Cubans who have lost everything to the Castro regime. This novel bounces around--characters appear and then disappear, loose ends dangle everywhere, the title character (The Queen of the Underworld) is AWOL, there isn't a single likable character and the entire book is just too painful for words.

What was even more depressing than The Queen of the Underworld is that it took me almost two weeks to read it.I'm very embarrassed for Gail Godwin and I can't understand why her editors would allow this book to be published. No wonder I'm seeing it for sale in our local dollar stores.

2-0 out of 5 stars Phoned In
What a lot of interesting secondary characters! Unfortunately, the main character is pretty much annoying. An abusive stepfather gains our sympahy for the plucky heroine at first, but she's so clueless and chirpy--wow, look at me, folks, I'm having an affair! --we lose the sympathy fast and just keep waiting to see if she stumbles.

In the audio version, the narrator does a pretty good job with the various accents, but slips out of Southern a few times.

1-0 out of 5 stars what a disappointment!!
Many other reviews summarize the book so I won't repeat everything here. Suffice it to say - it was very disappointing! I kept waiting for something to happen and when the book finally seemed to get really interesting, it ended - just ended - with no resolution, finality, anything!! A waste of time - could have been so much more.Don't buy it - borrow it or pass altogether. If I like a book, I keep it - this one I will sell to a used book store or donate to Goodwill.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Karen Morse
Bright-eyed, independent Emma Gant arrives in Miami in the summer of 1959 with the world at her feet. She has a married lover who'll show her the ropes, and a reasonably-priced residence orchestrated by a family friend, and an upwardly-mobile job at the Miami Star, the most important accessory for a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill journalism school.

Emma joins the Star's reporting staff at a tumultuous time, shortly after Fidel Castro enacted his First Agrarian Reform. Living in a hotel run by Cuban émigrés for Cuban émigrés makes the upheavals of Castro's revolución more than just news to Emma.Placing her in this context, the author seems to be drawing a comparison between Emma's situation and that of the Cubans. As Emma is struggling to figure out her place in the world and gauge her future success, so are her newly exiled neighbors.

The more one reads into the life history of the author, the more Queen of the Underworld begins to seem like a semi-autobiographical novel.Godwin herself graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1959 and spent a year on the staff of the Miami Herald before embarking on the world travels that sparked her literary career.

What is most curious about the novel is that it takes place over such a short period of time. The story of Emma's coming into her own, Queen of the Underworld is a window into what seems to be a key moment in Emma's development, one that may affect her entire career.Godwin, however, manages to squeeze an unbelievable amount of action into less than two weeks.Emma's life during the span of the novel is so full, it is almost surreal; as she herself recounts, "in one week and three days, I met a gangster walking a dog, sat behind a notorious boss at a funeral, became friends with [an] ex-madame [...], and helped two Cubans smuggle arms out of Florida" (331), and that's not even the half of it.

By contrast, the novel's ending is unsatisfying and somewhat abrupt. While Emma fantasizes about writing a novel, there is nothing (besides Godwin's own history) that gives any indication that Emma will become a novelist. The narrative ends with both Emma and the reader waiting on her future, filled with unanswered questions.

Godwin's characterization, however, is the novel's saving grace.Emma is amazingly sympathetic despite her naïveté and the fact that she seems to have no compunction about sleeping with another woman's husband (although her sexual relationships do seem to be at odds with her history of sexual abuse).More significantly, Queen of the Underworld is full of finely drawn secondary characters. One such character is Don Waldo Navarro, a prominent academic who fled Cuba with his memoirs sewn into his wife's skirt.A minor character, who could have easily been shunted aside after his grand entrance, Don Waldo is made real in Godwin's attention to detail:he swims breaststroke in the hotel pool "in billowing maroon trunks" (260) with "his leonine head erect" (259) and has the ability of seamlessly incorporating a nine-year-old Spanish-speaking girl into a English-language conversation: "the great educator's consecutive translations into Spanish on Luisa's behalf bore no trace of pedagogy.Don Waldo made it seem merely as though he suddenly chose to complete the rest of his discourse in another tongue" (272).

Godwin has written a number of other novels including The Odd Woman, Violet Clay, and A Mother and Two Daughters, each of which was nominated for the National Book Award.A career author, she published her first novel in 1970.Her papers are archived in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars love historical romance...castles...knights...strong independent women!
This is my favorite book! I have read it countless times and fall in love with it every time I read it. Try it. You won't be disappointed! Then try the Velvet series. They're wonderfully romantic!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like time travel romance this is the book for you
I read this book several weeks ago and have read a dozen or so romance's since then but amazingly the characters in this novel still stand out in my mind. I really enjoyed some parts of this book although I'm not a fan of Time Travel Romance novels this one is very well done. If you like Historical Romance and enjoyed the Time Traveler's Wife you'll probably love this book. This is a long book and is PG rated so don't expect a big sex scene pay off after reading thru hundreds of pages - it's just not that kind of book. Instead expect a lot of plot development and sweetness between the characters. I loved the heroine at the end but in the beginning I struggled to relate to her because she was such a door mat. It was interesting to read the author's notes at the end of the book which I wouldn't disclose here in case you read it. It does add an interesting layer to the storyline although I still don't relate to the heroine's earlier behavior I understand what the author was trying to achieve and I appreciate how strong she became at the end. For me I thought the story could be condensed a bit as it dragged on in places and I found myself putting the book down several times I even started reading another one half way thru and kept going back and forth between the two books. For me this wasn't the most satisfying of romance novels but it's really hard to write it off because I keep thinking about it and the characters are still very much in my memory. For example although it wasn't hot and steamy (at least by my taste) there were some really funny parts. I also enjoyed that the author incorporated the concept of reincarnation in and brought the characters full circle in the end. Though not a traditional fairy tale ending (not sure how you can do that with time travel anyway) I was very satisfied with the ending because all of the players were better people (or dare I say spiritual beings?) for the change in history. On a side note I enjoyed the well researched, factual depiction of historical life (not very romantic but it certainly set the stage). On a purely selfish level I sort of wish Jude has given the hero a lady friend to grow old with. I hated that he was left in his age and chose to stay single for the rest of his life. He was a rascal so I see why Jude chose to have him opt to remain alone since his one true love was gone but I felt bad for the guy. For me I wouldn't have minded if Nicholas and Honoria has gotten together because Dougless had asked him to make sure she got a good husband. OK I see the problems in doing something like this but I guess the fact that I even would suggest something like this shows how emotionally involved I got in this book. It was very well done and I'll make a point to read more of Jude Deveraux's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful love stories i've ever read...
My sister recommended this book to me about 20 years ago and I loved it...I just picked it up and read it again and had forgotten just how great this book is. It made me laugh and cry along with the characters. I felt sorry for Dougless and I fell in love with Nicolas. I wish they would make a movie out of it. I got chills at the end of the book and it almost made me cry. I know some people don't like the ending but it made sense to me. It was very touching and I can't think of how else it could've ended. I had to call my cousin and read the ending to her and we both got chills and became emotional over it. I read the book in 2 days and that is very rare for me especially since I am not a fast reader and normally when I get really into a book it may take me a week or 2 to finish it. This is like the ultimate love story. Fantastic...I am reading it all over again even though there are alot more books I want to read too. This one is just simply UNFORGETTABLE. I can't think of another book that has affected me as much as this one has in a long time. Whitney, My Love by Judith Mcnaught and Twilight are also some of my favorite books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down the best time travel romance
This was the first time travel romance I ever read when it first came out-I don't even know if the genre had been around before then. But I can say without fail that this book is the gold standard that I judge all time travel romances against! I won't give a synopsis, as there are several here already but I can say without a doubt, if you enjoy time travel romance, you will love this book.Jude Deveraux is an excellent romance writer and all her books are worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST
This is the absolute best book she has ever written. While it starts out slow and a bit boring, you need to stick with it and won't be able to put it down. This author is so talented and A Knight in Shining Armor is a lovely story, with wonderful detail that allows you to be carried away to a time and place where love is never ending.I bought the hard cover of this book just to own it, which I rarely do.This is one of my most treasured books. ... I laughed, cried and felt very sad for the characters in this book.I loved everything about this book and I highly recommend it to you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I thought
Beautifully read by Stephanie Zimbalist and Lolita Davidovitch, this is a heartwarming story into a world we will never know.Difficult subject matters were covered in delicate ways giving you a unique insite into the lives of conjoined twins. The readers truly brought the story to life in a way that reading the book might have missed.I know that I am going to miss the characters for some time.

2-0 out of 5 stars really?
Possible spoilers.

I had high hopes for this book. You would think that a book about conjoined twins who have a baby out of wedlock and could die of a brain tumor at any moment would be, well, anything but boring. This book was incredibly boring. Really, I don't know how you could make this subject material boring, but it's a big snooze. Part of the reason is that the girls are boring people, living in a boring town, and everyone they know is boring too. Aside from the two things mentioned in the first sentence, nothing interesting has ever happened to them, and there is nothing special, interesting, or heroic about them or the lens through which they see the world. There were a couple interesting scenes, and some information about how conjoined twins physically function together, which is why I gave it 2 stars. The writing isn't terrible hack, which is another reason 2 stars. But it's boring and occasionally pretentious (see 5 star reviewers quote about words seeping). I could not even finish it, and I always finish books. If it wasn't about conjoined twins, it would not be worth perusal at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
"The Girls" was a good book about two sisters. During a lot of the book, you forget that they are conjoined twins. The book portrays their lives through an autobiography, and you learn about their individual and collective lives. Some things that happen are disturbing and strange, while others are heartwarming. You fall in love with the characters and can't put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting read
I really liked this book. It was an interesting, yet easy read told from the perspective of conjoined twin girls. It wasn't sad at all, but rather discussed the love and history of their family. There were also many interesting discussions of things I would never have thought of joined twins going through. The end was a little abrupt but I am willing to forgive that since the rest of the book was so interesting. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Just Shallow...
If Bridges of Madison County had been written by Richard Bach...This novel is a test for any true cynic (or skeptic - which am I?can't tell...).With unabashed straightforwardness, Coelho examines religion and love and comes up on the side of . . . both, I think.Look, ifhad read this in my 20's, I might've been swept up, but I wasn't completely repelled either. It does, however, require setting aside all cynical thoughts, and I'm just not completely able to do that.So maybe it's more my fault than his...Maybe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read The Alchemist or The Devil and Miss Prym
Paul Cohelo is no doubt a very good author. He has been read worldwide by tens of millions. I read The Alchemist and The Devil and Miss Prym and found them to be very, very good books.Because of this, I was eager with anticipation to read my third novel by Cohelo but unfortunately was disappointed and found By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept to be pure drudgery to get through.

The previous two novels were elegant in their simplicity and yet captivating stories of human nature and the struggle to listen to and follow one's will, especially in the face of adverse circumstances.I never felt this struggle nor cared much about what happened to the central characters in this book and thus never really felt pulled into the story.

After reading some of the other Amazon reviews of those who gave the book two stars or less, I too found the story "underwhelming", the narration and dialogue "dry and repetitive" andmany details missing behind the history of the two central characters that made the story in its present tense emotionally flat and uninspiring.

Skip this book and read the two aforementioned books by Cohelo.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
It is a wonderful idea to make available recordings of great speeches. I hope we have more of this in the future.
In the case of older speeches, the selection is very good, considering the restraints of time, and the readers are uniformly excellent.
As for the modern speeches, it is a marvel of technology that we can hear these speeches as delivered. It is incredible that we can hear the voice of William Jennings Bryan.I can listen to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" a thousand times and never tire of it! How I wish Icould listen to the voice of Patrick Henry! But this selection is too heavily weighted to the modern, andmany of those do not deserve billing as the GREATEST speeches of ALL TIME.Also, some ofthe modern speeches which are included are abridged, e.g. Reagan is cut off in the middle of a sentence, while lengthy and undeserving speeches are played out in their entirety.
Also, with only a few exceptions, the selection is almost entirely American. It is hard to understand why Jimmy Carter's lengthy speech on energy policy is included, while Pericles' funeral oration is not; or why only a small portion of a single Winston Churchill speech is included;whywhile Bill Clinton's complete 1993 pulpit address, in excess of 20 minutes, is included.
It would be helpful if the complete list of speeches were available to online buyers, as it would be to shoppers in a brick and mortar store.

I have listened to this collection twice now, both times with pleasure.Hearing the acutal voices of Amelia Earhart, Rev. Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill and Neil Armstrong made a deeper connection than simplyreading their words. The collection showcases different subjects and manytimes contrasts opposing viewpoints of the ideas. This volume is afantastic introduction to the moving ideals and sometimes sad truths thathave influenced Western Civilization. ...
