1-0 out of 5 stars TOO FAR!
THIS BOOK TOOK SCIENCE TOO FAR. I AM NOW TERRIBLY AWARE OF OUR INHERENT ANIMAL NATURE AND THE FUTILITY OF OUR STRUGGLE FOR MORAL AND INTELLECTUAL PERFECTION. ALSO MY CAT IS DEAD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some things man was not meant to know.
Hubris. The drive to create, to explore, and most importantly to know.Ever since our primitive ancestors came down from the trees, our species has been driven by the need to explore and expand our boundaries. We want to make sense of our world. But this book has taught me (the hard way) that those boundaries, however restrictive they may seem, are there for a good reason.Make no mistake about it, this book delivers everything it promises. This truly is science to the Extreme. It will take you to the edge of reason and then far beyond, and once you experience what it has to offer, you will never be the same.Awesome?Yes, in the most literal sense of the word. But there's a price to pay, and the price is too much. The things Out There that this book will showyou, once seen, can never be unseen, no matter how hard you try.

The Church of the Subgenius has a lesser-known motto: "Science does not remove the terror of the Gods".Like everything about the Church, I thought it was a joke. But it wasn't until I read "Taking Science To The Extreme!" that I learned JUST HOW DEADLY SERIOUS THEY WERE.Leave this book alone.Keep your eyes closed, children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Purchase this book with caution!
I that this might interject some fun and excitement into the usually boring subject of science. At first, it did. I found myself reading an experiment or two a day, and it was a lot of fun. But, before long, that just wasn't enough. I needed three, four, or even five experiments just to keep me even. Before long, I found myself ripping off hobby stores and high school chemistry labs just to get the supplies I needed to get my fix. I lost my job and apartment and had to move in with my parents. But that didn't matter, all that mattered was the science. I had truly taken it to the extreme. Unfortunately, the extreme was way too far. Fortunately, I finally got help through a program that was offered to me as part of an appearance on the show 'Intervention.'

Be very careful. Recreational science can be fun, but it's always dangerous when you take something to the extreme like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Extreme it's Metal
I always thought science was kind of gay, in fact I used to beat up the science nerd kids in school. But that was before I found out Science could be taken TO THE EXTREME. Thanks to this book, my car now shoots flames, my dirtbike is rocket powered, and I blew up my jerkbag step dad's garage. Ha, take that, Steve. You're not my old man. ... Read more

Product Description
I See You, I See Myself, written for young adult readers, examines the early experiences and choices that led Jacob Lawrence to become an artist. In bold colors and precise language, the book describes how the break up of his parents, a period of foster care, reunification with his mother, brother, and sister in Harlem, and the influence of other adults in his community shaped the decisions Lawrence made about his art and his life. The hurdles that he faced -- moving, parent separation, and discrimination -- are ones that challenge many children today. I See You, I See Myself describes how the choices one makes in dealing with these challenges start to shape a personís life. It includes 65 color illustrations of Lawrenceís work, accompanied by photographs documenting his early experiences in the Harlem community.

Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1917. Moving from there to Easton, Pennsylvania, and finally to Harlem in 1930, his family was part of the Great Migration of African Americans who relocated to the North from the South. Raised among the ìNew Negroesî -- the emerging African American writers, artists, and poets who were a manifestation of the Harlem Renaissance -- Lawrence was one of the first artists trained in and by the African American community in Harlem. At Utopia Childrenís House, a community daycare center, Lawrence received his earliest art instruction from Charles Alston, then a graduate student at Columbia University Teachers College. Lawrence continued to study with Alston throughout the 1930s at the WPA Harlem Art Workshop and at Alstonís studio. He encountered notable artists, writers, and activists, such as Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, William Aaron Douglas, Orson Wells, Alain Locke, Addison Bates, and Augusta Savage, who had a profound effect on his development as an artist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very pleased
I am very pleased with the condition of the book and also the prompt service.I am very happy to highly recommend this seller to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best translation of Grimms' tales
I have read this Manheim's translation many times. It is almost perfect and true to the original. As for the book, two things are certain: (1) Grimms' tales are not just so stories and (2) they are not for kids. It is probable that such stories may have been inspiring to Freud, Bergman or could offer food for thought to Edward Witten as they are full of dream or nightmare stuff and lots of inexplicable things. They are an illustrated version of depth psychology and a quantum or string theory at the same time. They are truly authentic folk stories, many of them being incomplete in their logical development and many completely absurd in the existentialist sense of the word. They are sure to leave a hole in your head. Therefore, if you want to have a nice time, do not read them, because they are not nice stuff. However, if you want to get a bad fright, if you want to be haunted by them for weeks on end, read them one after another, and do read them after dark. And take my word for it: these stories will make you scared. You can take the Juniper Tree for a good start (by the way, does not the song of the devoured child (birdsong) remind you of Gretchen's song at the end of Goethe's Faust Part I?

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm just a bit disappointed
I was expecting a bit more maturity and depth I suppose. Many of the stories seem repetitive and more like a rhyme or a sing song than a tale. Other than reading some of these stories in elementary school and watching Disney's and Hollywood's portrayal I have had no experience with these stories and have no idea about all the translation stuff. I suppose the fault in disappointment is mine. For the most part it is an enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
This not only contains every story the Grimms wrote/recorded, it keeps them in their original state, so that you aren't reading the cleaned up version that keeps out the parts of a story that modern middle class parents might find "too scary". Children enjoy hearing a story told to them without a book, and this is a great resource for stories to learn and tell orally or while they are laying down for nap time, they can hear you as you read to them. If the story gets a little too scary and they tell you, you can yourself gloss it over but usually, I find the kids can handle it and enjoy hearing a different version of a tale they already know.
The only problem for me is that the type is a little small and the stories are crowded together. But all of the stories are there and it's already a pretty thick book so unless You want The Oxford Dictionary Like collection of Grimms Fairy Tales, you make do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy world!
How oft we remember dreaming - day dreams as a child and letting our imagination run wild! The Grimm's Fairy Tales are all *Five* Favourite Stars in my Read and Make Read collection in my Library. Some of my fav stories are:
1. Hansel & Gretel
2. Red Riding Hood
3. Snot White
4. Rumpelstiltskin
5. Cinderalla
6. Sleeping Beauty

Many More...you name it and these stories make your dreams sound true! Children love to read and listen. Even write reviews. This book is a famous collection of German Folk Tales by two brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. The first volume contained 86 tales and the second 70 and the last around 210 tales. The translations are perfect in this book and and took minute care to language details. The Grimms had taken pains to collect the tales mainly from friends and acquaintances who lived in and around a place called kassel in Germany and printed as expression of the spirit of german people. These retold stories with their own versions, the brothers have come out to suit public taste and their ideas about telling tales effectively. The translator Ralph Manheim has taken pains equally in translations!I recommend a 'Sure Sure Pick' whether one is a kid or a teen or even an Adult. Nothing like these stories will ever take you on a trip to wonderland! My Choice, of coz! ... Read more

Product Description
At the age of nineteen, Jacob Young left his family's Idaho wheat farm for Samara, Russia, where he had been assigned to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He quickly learned how to approach strangers in thick fur coats and deliver a thirty minute message about God. He learned how to knock on door after dreary door and testify with a conviction he did not always feel. He learned to love the Russian language, the Russian people, and the inside of a Russian jail.

But the most important lessons may have been the things he never learned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read
How desperate do you have to be to eat a chunk of raw pork you placed behind a couch to rot for several days hoping to contract trichinosis or some other non-fatal but serious disease? Pretty darn desperate, I'd say. And what kind of predicament could induce so much desperation in a healthy, intelligent and strong 19 year-old with a full life ahead of him?

Try taking him away from his quaint but free Idaho lifestyle and placing him in a land as foreign as post-Soviet Russia next to another 19 year-old he'd never before met but was now required to spend every waking second with, and entrust him with a single task for the next two years: to bring the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to as many lost souls as possible--a task which can be accomplished only if the message-bearer is worthy of it, which is to say, if his mind and body are utterly pure and his intentions true. Now, expose this young man to a more or less constant daily rejection (and not just your tame, apologetic Anglo-Saxon rejection, but the very particular hard-headed, sharp-tongued Slavic variety), take away his contact with everything familiar (family, books, music, language, sport), and push him onto a crowded bus where long, nyloned legs and exposed cleavages press against him while he recites his proselytizing verses in his head (his only line of defense in keeping his mind pure), and see what happens.

What happened to Elder Young, the author's younger self, are confusion, doubt, guilt, and an occasional moment of desperation. All of these excruciating emotions, however, ultimately led to something rather positive--growing up. The Mormon mission experience, as painful, challenging, and controversial as it might be, is one of the few true rites of passage left in our society, and as such it is utterly fascinating.

Harvest: Memoir of a Mormon Missionary is unusual in one respect. It neither vilifies the Mormon Church nor does it really applaud it. What it does instead is to show us with heart-wrenching honesty what it is like to serve a Mormon mission. To see someone so wholesome and intent on doing the right thing try so hard, and yet always fall short of feeling "worthy," is at times viscerally painful. But we keep reading because we want to see this young man find peace, because we know he deserves it. In not taking "sides," Harvest runs the risk of upsetting everybody and pleasing nobody, but this fact is more a reflection of our society's ingrained need for a simplified, black-and-white representation of complex problems than a flaw of this book.

In the words of one of Young's Russian "investigators," Mormonism is a uniquely American religion. There is more to Elder Young's journey than a coming-of-age of an American teenager. Doesn't our entire country put on a neat uniform and travel abroad to convince those less enlightened than ourselves to take up our worldview? Our intentions are at once noble and flawed. We might truly trust that our way of life is superior and that those less fortunate could benefit from accepting it, and because we are Americans and determined to do good, we get off our couch and go on converting. What we fail to take into account in our youthful earnestness, however, are the complex history of the world outside our shores and a universal human aversion to being subjugated and told you got it wrong. Our go-getter attitude and "If it's broke fix it" approach often get lost in translation, and we are perceived as cultural and political imperialists. But all is not lost. By wrestling with our conscience, the way we see young Elder Young do in this book, we can grow and change and come to understand both the world and ourselves more fully.

Harvest: Memoir of a Mormon Missionary is an engaging, fascinating read. It deals with theology, sexuality, duty, obedience, and all the other building blocks of identity. The growing pains of change can be felt on each page, yet there is something redemptive to the experience--the sense that the world and self are not stagnant, and that as humans we are here to learn before we can teach.

4-0 out of 5 stars teens on trial review
Right off the bat I want to notify you that this is a book about law and trial. Now, the pros and cons of this book, one of the pros of this book is the fact that it was non-fiction. It didn't tell a fake story, it was all real. Something else positive about this book is that you learn something about the law each case.
Some cons of the book are the number of pages. It is a short book. Another problem I had was the time spent writing about each case. I feel the author could have elaborated on the case more. For example, the author could have showed the evidence from the case and gave the defending argument, instead of only giving the prosecutions argument.
Overall the good and bad, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the law and non-fiction books that are short and to the point.
So go out to the library and check out "Teens on Trial."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for high school law teachers!
As a high school law teacher, I found this book a great resource for student discussions. The court cases are written in easy to understand "kid" language. Both sides are presented clearly and fairly.Additional related discussion questions are presented with each case as well as possible answers. My students found the court cases relevant and interesting. At the end of each section, additional court cases are listed to review. It's a great book for teenagers! ...
