This is a study of the strategic challenges that Soviet ballistic missile defense (BMD) programs may pose for the Western alliance. David Yost suggests that the challenges for Western policy stem partly from Soviet military programs, Soviet arms control policies, and Soviet public diplomacy campaigns, and partly from the West's own intra-alliance disagreements and lack of consensus about Western security requirements.

By reviewing the history of Western assessments of Soviet BMD, Yost shows that long before the American strategic defense initiative (SDI) was launched, Soviet BMD system modernization and infrastructure expansion were well under way, and that current Soviet programs are not mainly reactive to the SDI. Yost judges that the Soviets are probably better prepared than the Americans to deploy a network of traditional, ground-based BMD systems that would have at least some military value in the next decade, particularly against the limited and selective retaliatory attacks envisaged in NATO strategy. He does not argue that the Soviets are preparing for a clear-cut "breakout" from current arms control limits on BMD, but he notes the risks posed by activities that could eventually amount to a "creepout" from certain treaty constraints. Because of such ambiguities and the seriousness of the strategic and political stakes, the West should be prepared to pursue any necessary countermeasures in a timely fashion. His aim in this book is to advance understanding of the possible strategic challenges to the West and to identify potential points of consensus for Western policies.

WEAK & UNNECESSARY.. BUT IF YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY
'Battle for the Cowl' isn't the most popular story arc in the Batman series; however, it is the DC event that spins out of 'Batman RIP' and 'Final Crisis', and begins the new 'Batman and Robin' adventures in Bruce Wayne's absence. 'Battle for the Cowl' is worth checking out if you're a fan of continuity or the three different characters who have all been Robin. But I can't recommend this set of mediocre stories and poor excuse for a 'Companion' tradeback.

I'm not saying there aren't a few decent issues included, but unless you're a completist, it's not worth wasting your time or money. A few issues have nothing to do with 'Battle for the Cowl'. It ends up confusing the event, rather than complimenting it. Each issue is meant to set up new directions for the characters.Most everyone is chiseled down to their generic profiles, and the premises of each story are far from original. It's a comic, you can't expect award winning literature, but you can expect entertainment. I don't think this provides 10dollars worth.

The 'Arkham Asylum' One Shot is possibly the best one out of the five.The asylum is destroyed and Dr. Arkham must find new inspiration to rebuild it. We're charmed by three of his patients, who end up providing the Doctor with just the motivation he needed. The style of writing eerie and almost poetic.

The 'Network' issue, is much like an issue of 'Birds of Prey'.Dr. Hugo Strange plays a game with the Bat-Family's femme fatales, intended for Jason Todd.. the premise is boringly similar to Joker's rigged Boat dilemma in Nolan's 'Dark Knight'. But the One Shot does provide insight into a few of the heroins, and if any characters shine in the entire 'Companion' tradeback, it would be Huntress and Oracle.

'Man-Bat' is the worst and most irrelevant issue out of all of them.Dr. Kirk Langstrom is an under-appreciated character, but this 'Battle for the Cowl' tie-in isn't doing him any favors. It's boring, sloppy and nonsensical.His wife is missing and so is the plot.

The 'Commissioner Gordon' tie-in is actually possibly worse than the 'Man-Bat- issue.This tale puts underdog against underdog, Gordon up against Mr. Freeze. If Gordon can just.. almost got it.. there!!He's gonna have to manage on his own more often now.. now that Batman's gone. Lame.

'The Underground' One Shot finishes the book.It's not great either.The Crime Lords are feeling restless with the Batman missing, and the power struggle is gaining intensity.This issue lays the foundation for Posion Ivy's, Harley Quinn's and Catwoman's new partnership, and elaborates on the Penguins feud with Two-Face. Big Whoop.

The art throughout is by various artist, and most of it is acceptable but not anything spectacular.'Arkham Asylum' and 'The Network' have the best pencils and coloring.In 'The Underground' Catwoman and Harley Quinn are actually rather ugly. I've heard some people challenge DC to make a series with ugly superheroes. This might satisfy those challengers.

Fantastic
This was the event that drew me back into mainstream comics. Growing up on the 90's X-men cartoon show made me a fan for life, but after mutants became so common and the x-men so powerful in the marvel universe I lost interest. House of M changed that shrinking their numbers, yet this was the story that brought meback to them in a big way.


Since Messiah Complex I eagerly look forward to X titles, and these cross over events are the best. I can't wait for second coming to see where the x-men had to go before the Heroic Age began.

reminiscent of the 90's X-men
I enjoyed every page of this book. Through parts of it I'd forget I was reading it and felt as if I was watching an episode of the animated series back when I was a kid. I highly recommend this book to anyone who was raised on the same X-men stuff from the early 90's as I was.

Good X-men for first time readers
This is my first true X-men book and I really enjoyed it. The only complaints I have are the different artist styles sometimes conflict.

Entertaining while confusing
While I read a lot of Marvel titles, I haven't kept up as well as I apparently need to in order to know all the characters in this crossover.

Some positives:

Even though this section is much smaller than my complaints below, I want to be clear that I enjoyed the storyline.The overall plot was well thought out, and I enjoyed reading the Summit notes at the end of the trade paperback.The writers did a good job of keeping you interested.There were so many sides pulling at the same thing, and you only had a good idea of the agenda of the X-Men.I loved seeing the members of the different teams working together, and crossing over into different books.

Some negatives:

Art:

I echo some other thoughts I read in reviews about the "manga" style art in some of the books.I really don't enjoy that style, but especially not intermixed with other art.It's not even always easy to tell which characters are which.

Also there were several frames where the action was confusing.For instance it looked like Predator X ate Bishop, or at least chewed his arms off.Of course he seems fine a few frames later when he shot at Cable and missed (don't want to spoil anything).

There were other scenes too that were difficult to decipher, many of them involving Predator X.Graphic novels are stories told in part by text, and in part by picture.If the message isn't well communicated because the reader can't figure out what is going on in some frames, mission officially not accomplished.

Story:

I have a few complaints about the story.While others have said that the story moved too slowly, I found a few parts where it moved too fast.For instance when Rogue wakes up, gets up immediately and somehow gains an understanding of what has happened since she's been out from three semi-incoherent sentences by Mystique.That was hard for me to believe.She's not groggy from being in a coma?Other examples: The short arguments between Xavier and Cyclops, for that matter, most of the story as it pertained to Xavier, and how the X-Men escaped the Mauraders toward the beginning.

Other plot holes:

If the purifier soldiers with guns can kill several of the X-Men with a few shots, how were they completely ineffective until the one soldier was overlooked toward the end of the battle when he shot Caliban? (That speaks to a larger problem in comics, not just this line).

How were the telepaths taken out so easily in the battle with the Sentinels?How did they recover so quickly? - that was unresolved.

Why was Sinister so easily killed?What was his agenda?Is he really dead?

For that matter, who is really dead?

It seems that they made a big deal of the 198 existing mutants, but then several nameless mutants are killed.How many are left?It seems kind of important.I count at least 9 mutants that were killed in this story arc.

I gave the story 3 stars because I will read it again.It wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't as frustrating as some of Marvel's other big story lines (Civil War, Secret Invasion).

Not Much To It
The fights are really cool, but there isn't really more than a single plot thread which barely moves along for such a long book.It ends without resolving anything and basically just serves as a list of notable mutants who are now dead in the Marvel universe. ... Read more
