Inspirational
An extremely moving and searingly candid account of a life lived among peaks and valleys. A magnificent comic actor and, much more importantly, a wonderfully loving father and husband. An exceptionally beautiful and touching love story. An extraordinary autobiography like no other which is a privilege to have read. Love over gold. Highly recommended.

In his own words
Ever since Film Fax magazine published an excerpt from the book, I'd hoped to finally read Dick York's story--in his own words. This book captures the soul of a man who many of us grew fnd of on Bewitched. It's not the typical Hollywood story. His love for his wife is most readily apparent--even from the title. True gentleman like him don't come along every day--and readers will soon learn how lucky his wife was to share the bumpy road with such a passionate man. Her foreword in the book let's the reader know that she appreciated every moment they had together--from the time she was 12 and he was 15. The world could do with a lot more real world love stories like theirs. What some may consider "incoherent" passages in the book, I consider a triumph in Dick's spirit even when his body was failing him. Through these characters, we see Dick's humor. Through his bought with pain killer addiction and how he kicked it, we see his strength. He's frank about his mental health after leaving Bewitched, and that may leave some reader's feeling uncomfortable. But look beyond those times of desperation, and you see a man who took lemons and made lemonade--when he was no longer able to act, he went back to his roots on radio and used his voice to appeal for aid for the homeless. Seeing some TV shows on his life after Bewitched, one may feel that Dick York died penniless and alone. This book proves otherwise. Anyone who has every felt down and out and is on their way back should read this book.

Wonderfully Unexpected
About 6 years ago, I was contacted via my website by Claudia Kuehl, editor of this book, and told that Dick York's bio was soon to be released, and would I like to post about it on the website, since Dick had starred in two well-known "Twilight Zone" episodes? I was amazed.Dick York had already been gone for a long time and
had long since completely disappeared from the limelight due to health issues.I'm a younger generation viewer (age 33 right now) and I'd been watching Dick on reruns for many years.He was just "SO GOOD" in whatever role he played.Comedy, drama, everything.It always saddened me, watching this great talent and knowing that he'd not only left us so early, but had been forced to retire way before his time.And now...his bio was out.
So, I replied to Ms. Kuehl and immediately said "absolutely."
Prior to this, there wasn't much out there on Dick York other than his large body of work on the screen.There still isn't.A couple newspaper articles, an interview on E.T. done shortly before he died.

Once I got my copy of the book, I read about a third of it
right away.I didn't read the rest until at least a year hence - subconsciously, I think I wanted to absorb
the third that I'd already read and save the rest of the 'dessert' for later.A few things grabbed me instantly - first was the unusual format.Dick didn't sit down and write this book in chapters.There are chapters, but I believe all, or almost all, of the book was dictated into a tape recorder.So, on paper, we're reading Dick's spoken words, his thoughts and musings.The second thing was Dick's candidness - a completely no-holds-barred approach - reminiscing about the past and also talking of the present, and not in chronological A to Z fashion the way most bios are written.The third aspect, and the most prominent, was Dick York's humanity and humility.He rose to stardom fast, and for an unjustly brief time, was at the very top.He had everything and more - tons of money, wonderful wife and kids, universal acclaim, the respect of his peers.But Dick readily accepted that "what goes up must come down", and that it can happen to anyone.

Dick's life was anything but drab.He worked with the finest,
and he eventually became a member of that certain fraternity of
Hollywood gemstones.There are lots of colorful reminiscences about the old days of TV and film...especially early television.Simultaneously, Dick talks of the plush house in the Hollywood Hills, and then his present-day one-bedroom apartment out east in Covina, in the same sentence.It's a bit heartbreaking.Exactly where was the disability pension from Screen Actors Guild, which should've been given to him after he could not work any longer?The fall to poverty after letting numerous tenants off the hook with their rent in the apartment buildings he owned. Never getting his back surgically fixed after it went out in the late 50s, and never giving up smoking.Fans who wrote him letters requesting autographed photos, and Dick having to answer them saying, "I'm so sorry, but I can't afford to provide photos to my wonderful fans." But through it all, Dick never gave up and never lost his sense of humor.His wife Joey and five children gave him the ability to keep going no matter what.

As Dick admits very early in the book, the flow is
uneven and bounces from here to there - and the reader is more or less a member of the audience on the stage that was his (and Joey's) life.Some readers will get into the spirit immediately and can read it from cover to cover, others definitely will not, and will be forced to look in other parts of the book...and per Dick himself, "that's okay!"Either way, I highly recommend "The Seesaw Girl and Me" to anyone who knows Dick's work.

Difference between 1st edition and 2nd printing?
Can anyone comment on whether there are differences in the 1st and 2nd printing of The Seesaw Girl and Me? I'm looking for a copy, but am unsure which one I should buy. I'm really looking forward to reading it, but was curious about this.

An unusual, hopeful, strange, wonderful read
Dick York had had a great career. He was on the radio as a teenager, then on Broadway, and he appeared in a number of films and television shows before he landed the role we all know him best for. York starred as Darrin Stevens--the "first Darrin"--in 156 episodes of the sitcom Bewitched, which first aired in 1964. But York's stint on the series ended abruptly one day in 1969 when he had a seizure on the set. He had in fact been suffering from chronic back pain during the show's entire run, the result of an injury he sustained while filming the 1959 western They Came to Cordura. The spry Darrin Stevens, who looked the picture of health, often had to be helped on and off the set.

The seizure effectively marked the end of York's show business career. While still in the hospital he resigned from the series. He subsequently became addicted to painkillers, ballooned to more than 300 pounds, and lost all but two of his teeth. Money was scarce enough that paying the rent was a hardship. But by the mid-1980s things were looking up. He'd overcome his addiction, lost 150 pounds, bought some false teeth, and gotten a few acting roles. Then, in the spring of 1986, he was diagnosed with emphysema. He died in 1992 at the age of 63.

In August of 1985, with rent coming due and having no way to pay it, York settled on the implausible scheme of raising the money by writing his autobiography. In nine days. Actually, he didn't "write" anything. On August 20th--between 3:30 and 6:00 in the morning, he tells us--York began dictating his memoir into a tape recorder. Finishing the book of course took him longer than nine days: his final chapter was dictated on September 6th.

The product of York's feverish burst of creativity is an unusual book. York tell the story of his life in a series of vignettes--growing up in the Chicago slums, falling in love with his wife, overcoming his addiction. There are stories about his parents and grandmother, his children, about his Huckleberry Finnish cousin, who did something I wouldn't have thought possible while walking with York one summer. He writes about Gene Kelly and Gary Cooper and Van Johnson:

"But at this point Van's an actor and has been an actor for a long time and dances very little, except in his heart, where he lives.

"We're in the lobby of this hotel and it is my birthday, only I'm in Holland and they're at home. The people who Van loves and who love him, they're at home and he's in Holland. We're sitting in the lobby and I'm reading him the letter I've received from Kim, age four-and-a-half years old. It says, 'Dear Daddy. From out of my pocket I send you all the love I have. And you know what important things I keep in my pocket. Love, Kimmy. Kisses kisses kisses.' Joey adds, 'She wrote this all by herself. I love you, darling.'

"Van Johnson is crying in a hotel lobby with his friend Dick York. They are both about nine years old."

There is very little about acting or show business. There is a great deal about his wife, Joey, the star around whom his life orbited.

York was an excellent storyteller. These vignettes are moving, sometimes surprising, and very well-written. Wrapped around them are some strange bits--conversations between York and his wife written in dialogue form, York chatting with his alternate self, imaginary audience members commenting on his work. It doesn't all make sense, but most of it does.

In addition to its individual parts being well-composed, York has managed to bind the narrative into a cohesive whole with threads that drift in and out of his reminiscences. Considering York's method of composition, this is remarkable: the book in no way reads like something that was dashed off. It is thoughtfully constructed, honest, rich. (It is unclear how much editing the book underwent after the first draft was dictated, but the implication is that there wasn't much done to the text.)

Dick York did not have an easy life. He lived in poverty for a good part of it, both as a child and in his post-Bewitched years. He lived with chronic back pain for decades. He died too young. Knowing this, one understands, upon entering the book, that York's story will be a tragedy. Except....

Except that York had parents who walked from the South Side of Chicago to the North Side in the winter of 1936 to bring him oranges in the hospital. He had a house brimming with children and a wife whom he never stopped adoring. He had friends who came through when it mattered. And he believed--despite all evidence to the contrary--that the world is the sort of place where miracles happen when you need them.

So I think that maybe Dick York was among the happiest of men.

Good Place to start
This book provides a good overall account of the story of The Dolls.Post Dolls-wise, there is more of an emphasis on Johnny Thunders later career than the other members, although their exploits are covered as well.My only complaint is that it did not have pre-Dolls photos.Reading about their pre-Dolls exploits made me wonder how they looked like during their mod-teenage years.Some early childhood photos would have been interesting as well.Otherwise, you can't go wrong with this account if you have never previously read a book about this legendary band.

Nina Antonia's book on Johnny Thunders is excellent, she had first hand access to him, he recognized her as his only biographer.Anyone who has to put her book down to recommend another one makes this book - Trash - seem highly suspect to me by association.You do no honor to the excellent memory of Arthur Kane either.No one took the time to write biographies of Johnny or the Dolls for years but Antonia, and your remarks are catty and embarrassing.

Nevertheless, this book is recommended by all fans also with the warning that it contains inaccuracies, and lacks the emotion and affection for its subject that Nina Antonia's books have.

The bestNYD Biography so far
This is a dense and thorough yet very readable history of the group. It is more substatial than Nina Antonia's also excellent book "Too Much Too Soon." If you have the time and the desire to learn about the history of the NYD, "Trash" is probably the better choice.

Of course, why should any of us care about the history of the New York Dolls? My answer to this retorical question has to do with my "adult" 46 year old recognition that New York was a fascinating place to be growing up in in the 1970s. Reading either of these histories will almost bring you back to the days when Times Square was not a safe place to visit and there was no sense that anything was going to get better. While risking a knifing to walk from the subway to CBGBs at Bleeker and Bowery had it's downside, remembering the Dolls and the other bands that defined the New York Scene in the 1970s gives me a warm feeling inside. Enjoy the book.

This is not a "mountain bike" book!
Do not buy this book if you are looking for mountain bike trails and descriptions of such.This guy likes to tell you every minute detail of the fire roads and dirt roads that he took (including telling you where to stop for a rest, and weather or not to take a right here or a left there, as if you were taking the book with you on the trail!) and tells little to nothing of the single track that these areas may or may not offer.Anyway, the way he describes these back roads and the views from them, you have not need to explore them.

I thumbed through this book at a bike shop in Geneva and shared my storywith the owner there.Briefly stated, let me assure readers that bikerswill be stopped and fined on the Finger Lakes trails.Most or all of themare now clearly marked to prohibit bikes.(This wasn't the case asarecently as three years ago.)Despite the postings and at the invitationof one of the trail workers, I decided to sample about a 1/2 mile stretchthat I had not hiked before at the north end of the Interlokken Trail. Sure enough, there was a ranger at the end of the jaunt who would hearnothing of my protests (an informal okay from one of the workers) andcircumstances (I walked my bike more than half way).After an appeal andfifty fine dollars, I stay clear of the Interlokken Trail, open to horsesbut not to bikes which are deemed to destroy the paths.The headrangerette told me that some of the trails closer to Ithaca may eventuallybe open to bikes, but there is a committee looking into it.However, atpresent the prescribed path is a rapidly travelled road with narrow andsometimes no shoulders (Route 89).

Anyone out there know of legaloff-road places to bike near Auburn, Skaneateles, or environs??

Risk
Dick Francis did it again; he kept me on the edge of my seat.Because the protagonist is an accountant, I was especially interested as my daughter is one also.I did not figure out the reason for Britten's abduction until the author revealed it.Fascinating and satisfying.I want my daughter to read it.

Horses and accountants
An accountant who is an amateur jockey finds himself being a target.

Hard to dislike anything Dick Francis writes. He writes so well.
Risk, like all his books, is definitely worth a read and probably a re-read, but it is not one of his best.
The story line is about an accountant who is an amateur jockey. Enjoy it and get another one by him to enjoy even more.

Dick Francis is the Master
Dick Francis never disappoints. He never writes the same story twice, though his protagonists all have in common some sort of inner battle. If you don't like to fly and need something to completely absorb your attention, you can always count on Dick Francis to provide a page-turner. Do another flier a favor when you finish and leave the book on a seat in the waiting area when you get off the plane. Great rainy-day reading. Francis always researches his topics carefully and even if you're not particularly enamoured of horses, you'll still enjoy a GOOD READ.

Another Francis hit
Much, much better than I'd hoped :)
Young accountant Roland Britten is kidnapped (twice!) and has no clue as to why this should've happened to him - a non-descript, normal, guy. But as old enemies and friends seem suddenly to change their behaviour towards him, he begins to suspect foul play. The only problem is - he doesn't know how best to avoid the traps that await him, before something really terminal happens...
I didn't know I'd enjoy this book so much - from the reviews it was supposed to be more average than it proved. Even if I'm a fan of Mr. Francis', I am trying to be objective - and I think this one stands on the same row as "The Danger", "Rat Race" and "Proof".

first HA book i've read
absolutely delightful!tells story of life on the streets from the view of a little boy who ends up going places because he is honest and clever.good for kids, and for 55 y/o women!

Ragged Dick
Ragged Dick, by Horatio Alger is a book telling about the story ofa young man who ultimately reaches the American Dream of living a respectable .Alger's main purpose in the text was to illustrate that a person of little class can make achieve a life of happinesswith honesty. The text was very appealing because it seemed that Alger was very passionate about helping orphans , he story was so realistic that it made you think he went through all of Dick`s experiences. Alger`s character`s were very realistic, which makes a almost fairy tale like book better. Alger's words although simple were full of emotion.
Alger effectively demonstrated through the actions of the characters that it is possible to climb the social ladder and end up with a wonderful life. This was done by showing the steps the main character Dick took to reach greatness. It is apparent that Alger wants you to feel what Dick is feeling. Alger using a lot of foreshadowing and symbolizes which makes the book much more thought provoking.
I found the book to be a valuable tool in helping me see things through the eyes of someone who has to work for what he wants. It gave me insight into the obstacles of life in the 1800`s. The book aided in my preparation for learning about the all history , not just a specific time period; the story is timeless . It gave me a reference to think about when I am presented with a story of a politician or other person who rose in position.
The text was very simple , almost too simple at places. It was a short read that went extremely quickly.Alger accomplished hid purpose. After reading one has to see how someone can rise up in society.

INTERESTING READING
I can honestly say that at first I thought this book would be boring and I would have to force myself to read it. I was wrong!! This book was so interesting, funny and heart felt, it made me laugh and teary-eyed all at the same time. I have recommended this book to people that don't even have to read it as a class assignment. At night before I went to bed I would read it and on my lunch break I would go into my car and read it, I couldn't put it down until I read the whole story. If I had to sum it up in one word it would be EXCELLENT!!!!

Ragged Dick... (Our Hero)
"Ragged Dick," a story about a young, poor, boot-black boy from New York City, is a Classic American novel.Written by Horatio Alger, in the late 1800's, hit upon the most important topic in America at the time; the "American Dream." The "American Dream," being the idea that everyone, from all walks of life, can come to America and be successful, in any way in which they want to, so long as they have hard work and determination to do so.Ragged Dick for filled this "Dream" by making his way up in society, and eventually making a wealthy man of himself.
I enjoyed reading "Ragged Dick."The story, though it was short, covered some very important topics of life back in the 1800's.The first was that fact that noone should give up.Through all of the hardships Dick was put through, including the loss of his parents, the mis-fortune of receiving no education, and the fact that he lived on his own for most of his life.Another important topic that was covered, was that hard work pays off.In Dick's case, he worked hard at a boot-black, treated people with respect, and finally caught a break for his hard work, by receiving a high paying job.
The kind of people that would enjoy this story would be people of all ages.No matter what age, or what level of education one may be, this story teaches lessons that anyone can benefit from.It doesn't matter if a twelve year old boy, or a fifty year old woman picked up "Ragged Dick," because they will both benefit from what the story speaks about.

Great beginning to his trilogy!
I have searched high and low for this book for years before I finally found it online - for some reason it seems to have gone out of print and every copy at the library is always checked out! It's the beginning to his Sid Halley trilogy - the only trilogy ever done by Dick Francis. Great book, although I do believe he re-used some of the elements in other books - or I read the book a long, long time ago and don't remember. As always, Francis leaves you guessing until the end! He is one of the few authors I have found that I cannot always predict who did it and why - the reasons are almost as great as the person who did it! Definitely recommend it, as I do with all of his books - and this series just gets better!

Odds Against
This book was shipped quickly, reasonably priced and in excellent condition. I am very pleased with this purchase.

One crash too many
Champion jumping jockey Sid Halley lost the use of one hand in a terrible fall - and with it his career. His marriage is over as well. When we meet him, he's been on the payroll of a detective agency for two years, and has just been shot in the gut by a small time crook. This is one of the author's early novels and the first one in the series about ex-jockey turned PI Sid Halley.This novel introduces the character, his past, his father-in-law, his work associates, etc.The first three novels about Halley, Odds Against, Whip Hand, and Come to Grief, can also be found in the combined omnibus edition, Win, Place, or Show.The novel is very good and has survived the test of time, i.e., it is still an interesting plot 40 years after it was written.

Sid Halley came from an impoverished background and had to leave school as a teenager.He was apprenticed as a jockey and by the time he was 18 her was a success.He made good investments and is also moderately wealthy.An accident ended his career as a jockey, and he has been employed, more or less, in a PI firm.Events lead him into a case involving an unscrupulous businessman who is trying to acquire racetrack property for personal profit.Like many businesses, the assets (in this case land) are undervalued in relation to the stock price, making a racetrack a takeover target.
