Excellent Read...
This is an excellent read for anyone wanting to get a perspective on Malcolm X's death. Most understand how duplicitous the U.S. government was during the 60's and earlier. Karl Evanzz does an excellent job gathering the historical facts surrounding Malcolm's death, which include Key Players that were close to Malcolm (i.e., Elijah Muhammad, John Ali, Louis Farrakhan). The gathered facts also include J Edgar Hoover, Robert Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson as Key Players in the death of Malcolm X. While Johnson and Kennedy may be minor players, Hoover was definitely the main character who was already pretty familiar with Elijah Muhammad prior to Malcom X's memebership into the Nation of Islam (NOI). Once Hoover sank his teeth into the NOI through informants in key places and feeding misinformation about key NOI people to its own people and the media, Elijah Muhammad and the NOI soon began to disintegrate into an organization feeding on itself for survival. After reading "The Judas Factor...", you too may conclude that removing Malcolm could have been an attempt to preserve the NOI by Elijah Muhammad as well as a plan by Hoover to neutralize the NOI as an organization that will not be politically viable for Blacks within the American Borders nor politically viable for Blacks, Africans, or Asians outside of the American Borders. All-in-all, this book is an excellent read. I would have given it five stars but it did not have any information on what happened to John Ali X. He, being a principle player in the NOI, seems to have disappeared from the scene without a trace.

BRILLIANT
I read anything about Malcolm X I can get my hands on; he still lives in my heart.This book is extremely well written w/a broad scope.This one will never leave my library.A must.

Good Read
Very interesting perspective on Malcolm X's assassination.Karl Evanzz provides (for the most part) an objective portrait of Malcolm, his followers and his enemies.The author creates a very logical connection in establishing a conspiracy theory about the assassination (then again, every conspiracy book is logical in a way even the outrageous ones).I would recommend this book to readers who want to be challenged and want to stop and think.

Good Book.
Karl Evanzz does a wonderful job putting together this book. I found out information about the NOI that I was unaware of. For example, the murders that were committed by some of their members even after Malcolm X was assassinated. Mr. Evanzz also did a good job showing the CIA and FBI's involvement in Malcolm's life and affairs. Furthermore, he shows their role in the elimination of African revolutionary leaders. This book also has great references and an outstanding bibliography. Fantastic book.

Odd slant on Malcolm X
Decaro is too eager to assess Malcolm X from a Christian viewpoint. For example, he refers to Malcolm X's (once-held) view that there is no afterlife as "posthumous nihilism," and assumes throughout that there is some essential, true Christianity.He also engages in frequent psychoanalytic speculation, without necessarily signalling that he is doing so. Good only for historical purposes
This book has it's moments, such as "God's Judgement for White America" which speaks of divine revenge for the crimes against Black Americans, but too much of this reflects the period when Malcolm was parroting (his own admission) the cuckoo-patch teachings of Elijah Muhammad for the benefit of the ignorant. "The Black Man's History" is filled with utter madness about Blakc mad scientists creating White people, ad nauseum. Good only for historical purposes. Read the real, sensible stuff from when Malcolm had the sense to cut loose from Elijah's mess, such as "Malcolm X Speaks,' "By Any Means Necessary" etc.

I first started teaching myself about Malcolm X when I was only in 6th grade, but I was only really concerned with his life story and not his ideas.The books I had read up through high school never gave any extrainsight either (and I owned 10 at the time).I first read this book in thefall of '95, finding it by accident when I was going through the books byMalcolm my freshman year at Montana State U.This book is terrific!I hadalways been an admirer of Malcolm, but without the insight and this bookgave it.My favorite speech is "The Black Man's History", trulya masterpiece.There are some ideas that don't quite pan out, but thesespeeches came during the time he was still with the Nation of Islam and afollower of Elijah Muhammed.This book gives terrific insight into hisideas early on.It is well worth the money to buy this book! ... A True Matriarch
This is a telling story of a giant of a woman. One who held down a man who showed a entire nation of people how to walk upright after 150+ years of beggin and stratching for crumbs. Dr. Betty Shabazz, the total essence of beauty combined with strength.

I have yet to read this book.But the book is in good condition.

A must read!!!
I received the book two weeks ago and finished it in four days. This is a well written, very informative insight into the life of Dr. Shabazz. She was a powerful woman, who did her best to protect her daughters from the evils of the world. Some might say that she sheltered them to much, but who can tell a mother that she's being overprotective of her babies? Against all odds she survived, her support system was outstanding, her vision was remarkable. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

Quite Informative,revealing, and historical
This book is not only an informative and revealing biography of one of America's hero's, Dr. Betty Shabazz. This is also a historical biography of a remarkable woman.Most informative is the likeness and kinship many woman can identify with especially struggling mothers, aunts,and grandmothers who find themselves trying to raise young boys alone. Often without the assistance of fathers, grandfathers, and positve male role-models.

Hers not only is the story of being Mrs. Malcolm X, Dr. Betty Shabazz, but also tragically grandmother/mother/counselor to our often time rebellious and misunderstood young black males searching for their fathers and father figures.

But in the mist of this tragic situation her family can and must relish in the life of this remarkable, remarkable Queen Mother Betty.....

Few figures haunt the collective American psyche like Malcolm X. Hoodlum, convict, convert, prophet, nationalist, and martyr, Malcolm's life spans the Civil Rights era like an index of America's racial anxiety. Dozens of books and hundreds of articles have analyzed his life, his work, and the various ways that his image has been appropriated by American culture. Not much has been done, however, to analyze his speeches. This would be a glaring omission in the body of scholarship about almost any public figure, but is especially troubling with regard to Malcolm X. His legacy does not consist of marches preserved on newsreels, legislation passed by Congress, or holidays observed by the state; his legacy consists almost exclusively of his words.

Malcolm X, like any orator, did not fashion his discourse in a vacuum but worked within and modified modes fashioned by his predecessors. Malcolm X: Inventing Radical Judgment begins by exploring the interpretive strategies presented in key texts from the history of African- American protest, establishing a spectrum against which Malcolm's oratory can be assessed. Malcolm X did not believe in violent protest .He believed in fighting back if physically attacked.He is no more controversial than Patrick Henry and other white men in US hHistory who fought against the British in the 1700's.

Malcolm X for Kids
This book is a good one.It is written by Walter Dean Myers who is an excellent children's writer.It covers basic facts about Malcolm X and truthfully provides his life history.What it doesn't cover and what probably would be difficult for kids in the intended age group is the controversy which is Malcolm X's philosophy and life.Malcolm X coined the term African-American because he felt that blacks in the US were Africans trapped in America.He believed in separatism and violent protest instead of Martin Luther King Jr.'s advocacy of non-violence.Myers states this but doesn't qualify the beliefs with opinion.Kind of tough for kids to hear without evaluation.I'm not sure how else it could have been done but Malcolm X is a controversial character.

An excellent analysis of Malcolm X from a religious, not purely political, perspective
"Angry black man"; "black Muslim militant". These are just some of the names that Malcolm X, who was assassinated 44 years ago, was called by journalists, other civil rights activists and the bigots who loved to turn his righteous anger against him.

Much has been written about Malcolm X's politics, and his resulting words have been appropriated by revolutionaries around the world to justify their causes. But this book focuses on his religious development.

De Caro Jr. presents a largely sympathetic and sensitive portrayal of Malcolm X. He is also balanced in his presentation of Islam as a faith tradition. The book is well-researched, with copious endnotes for each chapter.

What De Caro Jr. makes very clear is that the search for God and a faith that was far-reaching and comprehensive was always central to Malcolm X's life. "Malcolm fundamentally perceived religion as a wholistic experience that 'included every aspect of one's life - economic, political and social'" (p. 246). From his early years, his mother would take him to various churches to expose her children to various religious views within the Christian tradition.

The book's only weakness is De Caro Jr.'s tendency to overemphasize the influence of Garveyism, the Black Nationalist ideology Malcolm X's parents subscribed to and were activists for, in his life. While in a number of cases this analysis is warranted, in other places, I felt it was not necessarily so.

On The Side Of My People is a well-researched, well-written and fascinating portrayal of the spiritual side of Malcolm X, an aspect of his life largely overshadowed by the politics of his courageous quest for dignity for African-Americans.

Contrary to Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X has won more than his due share of attention.But he gained renown mostly for reasons having to do with his personal odyssey from petty thief to political figure of international stature, his black nationalism, and his scintillating rhetoric-not because he was a key figure in the growth of Islam in the United States.DeCaro fills this gap with an intelligent focus on his "religious life."Like Clegg, he relies on extensive research of primary documents; he finds much that is new about the man he terms a "religiously driven revolutionist." 5 In particular, he shows where Malcolm X's famous Autobiography is either lacking important information or slanted to make a point; what Malcolm X actually did during his last year (after leaving the NOI and becoming a mainstream Muslim); and the parallels in Malcolm X's dual conversion (to the NOI, to Islam).From an Islamic viewpoint, On the Side of My People is of special interest for the way DeCaro pulls apart the myth Malcolm X had propagated about having learned of mainstream Islam only on reaching Mecca in April 1964; in fact, we find out here, he had for many months, even years, been tending in that direction.Reaching Mecca for Malcolm X was less a revelation than an opportunity to come out of the religious closet.

Nice focus on the Religious side of Malcolm X
It was fantastic to read a religious biography of Malcolm X. Although DeCaro does go over Malcolm X's political activities (it would be rediculous to do otherwise!), he presents Malcolm X's life in its religious context, for example outlining the ongoing tension between the Nation and Orthodox Islam and how this affected Malcolm, whereas most biographies do the exact opposite.His book focusses primarily around Malcolms two conversions - firstly to the Nation, and the second to orthodox Islam. He also outlines the religious melting pot that Malcolm X came out of, and shows how these influences helped mold and shape him throughout his life. In doing this, he gives Malcolm a lot more religious credit than past biographers have done, and points out some probable biases in "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" (remember, in this book Malcolm originally intended to show how Elijah Muhammad had miraculously and single-handedly saved him, and therefore probably didn't give himself due credit). DeCaro goes on to explain how Malcolms second conversion was not an instantaneous transformation that occurred when he set foot in Mecca, but rather the climax of a change that had been building for some time. For me, DeCaro's book was thorough and well balanced. He didn't try to portray Malcolm as a hero or a villian or anything else, but rather just presented his life from the point of view of his 'religousness'. The book is written from DeCaros PhD dissertation, so is very well referenced, and he is careful to point out his own biases. The only qualm I had was that DeCaro did not have a huge number of interviews with people who knew Malcolm, but he admits this himself in the introduction, and he more than makes up for it with his use of other primary sources such as FBI files, prison records etc.So yeah. I loved it. Read it.
