Product Description
The ability to lead a campaign is essential to success for today's college or university president. And campaign experience at some level is generally now a prerequisite credential for presidential candidates, as well as deans and other academic leaders,on both public and private campuses. This book discusses fundamental campaign principles, but is not intended as a how-to guide. Rather, its emphasis is on the strategic decisions that a campaign requires and on campaign leadership. It will be of interest to trustees, advancement professionals, and others concerned with the future of colleges and universities. But, consistent with its sponsorship by the American Council on Education, it emphasizes the campaign leadership of presidents. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Small font a poor decision; otherwise a good textbook
I teach NPM in a university program and find this to be one of the better textbooks currently on the market.I'm planning on testing it with upper level undergrads this fall and abandoning the Ott I've used for years. However, I expect my students will find the small font as annoying as I do, so not sure I'll renew. If so, will have to go to Smith/Bucklin or some other outdated book, alas. With the demand for current NPM textbooks so strong (meaning, those that have kept up with legal changes and management research), I wish the editors had not cut corners by shrinking font size to cram in more text. After all, the goal is to get students to actually READ the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I bought this book by a recommendation from a friend. This book is gives you the basis of all that is entailed to start a nonprofit organization. It also gives you great resources to get more information from. From an operational plan to leadership, this book covers it all.
Unlike some nonprofit books, instead of the author telling the reader which is the right and wrong way to do certain things, like with a strategic plan, he gives you a variety of choices and lets the reader decides what is best for them.
He does not really go in depth in a lot of subjects, but he gives great advice and makes up for it in the other books that he recommends.
It's a great book for those who don't know anything about starting a nonprofit. ... Read more

Product Description
Fort Worth is called the city "Where the West Begins," and 100 years ago, the neighborhood known as Fairmount was where the south side ended. Now considered inner city, the Fairmount Southside Historic District is actually numerous smaller subdivisions including the largest, the Fairmount addition, and the smallest, the dubiously named Swastika Place. The neighborhoods were home to early merchants, lawyers, judges, artists, and small-business owners-many of whom went on to local and national fame. Today that legacy continues. Fairmount welcomes new generations of urban pioneers and benefits from a neighborhood renaissance that has brought this historically and architecturally significant gem of the city back from the brink of extinction. ... Product Description

One of the most profound events in sixteenth-century North America was a ferocious battle between the Spanish army of Hernando de Soto and a larger force of Indian warriors under the leadership of a feared chieftain named Tascalusa. The site of this battle was a small fortified border town within an Indian province known as Mabila. Although the Indians were defeated, the battle was a decisive blow to Spanish plans for the conquest and settlement of what is now the southeastern United States. For in that battle, De Soto’s army lost its baggage, including all proofs of the richness of the land—proofs that would be necessary to attract future colonists. Facing such a severe setback, De Soto led his army once more into the interior of the continent, where he was not to survive. The ragtag remnants of his once-mighty expedition limped into Mexico some three years later, thankful to be alive. The clear message of their ordeal was that this new land, then known as La Florida, could not be easily subjugated.

But where, exactly, did this decisive battle of Mabila take place? The accounts left by the Spanish chroniclers provide clues, but they are vague, so lacking in corroboration that without additional supporting evidence, it is impossible to trace De Soto’s trail on a modern map with any degree of certainty. Within this volume, 17 scholars—specialists in history, folklore, geography, geology, and archaeology—provide a new and encouragingly fresh perspective on the current status of the search for Mabila. Although there is a widespread consensus that the event took place in the southern part of what is now Alabama, the truth is that to this day, nobody knows where Mabila is—neither the contributors to this volume, nor any of the historians and archaeologists, amateur and professional, who have long sought it. One can rightfully say that the lost battle site of Mabila is the predominant historical mystery of the Deep South.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating work on one of the great mysteries of 16th-century North America
Until I stumbled across a publication notice for this book in The Chronicle of Higher Education, I had never heard of Chief Tascalusa or Mabila, but the story sounded fascinating. The lost battlefield of a bloody conflict between Hernando de Soto's army and an Indian tribe (or two) defending their turf--who could resist? In many ways it is a sort of American Troy.

I eventually ordered the book and wasn't able to put it down. Now, let the general reader beware: this is a scholarly work that has plenty of footnotes and lots of what most people would call "dry" passages. But I enjoy such arcane matters and realize that they are the building blocks of good scholarship. And in that regard, this book does not disappoint. The Search for Mabila represents the work of an assemblage of (mostly) academic experts on the prehistory of Alabama--its geography, archaeology, and pre-Columbian cultures--all seeking to locate the lost site of Mabila (whence the city of Mobile derives its name).Because we have only one true eyewitness account of the battle, and that is very succinct (there are three other surviving accounts, but all told either at a distance of time or even second-hand), clues are sparse and the gaps among the narratives require extensive reconstruction and speculation.Different chapters explore everything from the earliest maps of the Gulf Coast to late Mississippian tribal pottery and culture to the types of flora and fauna that probably existed in the area in the 1540s, all in an effort to discover where Mabila once stood. While the conclusions are inconclusive, it's the search that matters. And as Vernon James Knight notes in the closing pages, even negative conclusions help narrow the possibilities for future research. This book certainly takes a huge step in that direction.

With a lot of effort and a little luck, maybe one day we will unearth Mabila and the historical treasures that lie buried there. When we do, we will glimpse a forgotten but fascinating chapter of our history. ... Read more

In this age of downsizing, paycuts, and shrinking health-care contributions, employees on all rungs of the corporate ladder are increasingly baffled by company pay structures, benefits packages, and bonus plans. What might look like a nice raise on the surface often translates into a virtual pay cut when all the components are figured in.And what's more, until now, employers have had a monopoly on the knowledge of how these systems actually work, leaving employees virtually defenseless.

This is the best book I have read about compensation, developing a pay structure and understanding how an organization sets pay.It is written to be interesting and understood by normal people with a slight inclination to learning how organizations set pay.Read just pages 30-70 and you learn most of what the book has to offer. To get the raise you need, read that section and then also research actual pay statistics for free on the web or if you are really serious, even buy premium salary reports that give the same numbers HR people use to evaluate "market pay" from salary sections of websites like Monster, AOL, Yahoo, Hotjobs, Careerbuilder and Salary.com.There are two numbers you need to know to calculate ranges of market pay: what do recruiters say you would earn by switching jobs (ask a headhunter or cruise above job boards to research) and what do HR managers report to surveys (look on salary sites).Having an opinion on these two numbers and then applying yourself to understanding the processes described in this book will make you a winner in the career long pay negotiation game.Good Job Mr. O'Malley.Buy and read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not teach Salary Negotiation or Strategy
In general, this book provides information of how salary schedules and bonuses are determined. In addition, it describes a rather complicated, subjective process of how to determine what your salary should be, but later states that you cannot walk into your bosses office with this information and ask for a raise. There is some information, albeit very brief, of how to prepare for a job performance review and how to ask for a signing bonus with a potential future company, but most of it is common sense.

If you wish to learn how companies set up salary schedules and the like, read this book. However, if like me, you'd rather learn how to negotiate a better salary and benefits with your current or a future company, I'd recommend reading 'Get More Money on Your Next Job..' by Lee Miller.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be armed with information
Salary negotiation usually makes people nervous, but with this book even the most nervous person can feel educated and confident. O'Malley lays bare the mysterious inner-workings of salary grades and pay ranges. And hethrows in the occasional anecdote to give concepts some life. The book'scover statement - "The Book Your Company Doesn't Want You toRead" - is not an idle boast.

    Read by Leigh Steinberg

"There really is a Jerry Maguire. Only he's not some schlumpf struggling to make it on a wing and a prayer like Tom Cruise in the movie. . . . His name is Leigh Steinberg, and he's been cultivating a choirboy image for twenty years. He also happens to be the pre-eminent sports agent of our time."

    --San Francisco Examiner Magazine

"This is a book about the process of negotiation. Which means that this is a book about life."

Leigh Steinberg is the premier agent in sports. He has negotiated over $2 billion in contracts for the athletes he represents--who include Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Drew Bledsoe, Kordell Stewart, and Warren Moon--but he has also spent twenty--four years as a sports agent living by a strict personal and professional code of ethics. Steinberg's philosophy of ethical dealings and responsibility is well known in the sports world--and well known to moviegoers as well, because Steinberg's way of doing business was a model for Cameron Crowe's wildly successful film Jerry Maguire and the "manifesto" of business ethics that was the premise of the film.

Steinberg has always believed that negotiation is about more than the bottom line: the most successful business dealings are not always the ones that pay the most; they are about balance, perspective, objectivity, and values. A success in business must also be a success in one's own life. And in his book, Steinberg shares the secrets of successful negotiation, breaking the process down into the essential steps, from "Orientation" through "Making the Deal," and giving step-by-step practical and inspirational advice that will get any two people or parties, in any situation, to come to terms.

Full of great inside sports stories and characters, Winning with Integrity is an intelligent, insightful, and inspiring guide to the art of negotiation in business and in life--from the most successful businessman in sports.

"It's fashionable now, after the movie, for a lot of agents to talk about heart, but Leigh was the only one talking like that in 1993, when I began research."

--Cameron Crowe, director of Jerry Maguire
    Amazon.com Review
Since entering the nascent field of sports law 25 yearsago--before athletes were guaranteed the right of legalrepresentation--Leigh Steinberg has epitomized the high-profile sportsagent, successfully negotiating over $2 billion in contracts forsuperstars like Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Ryan Leaf. Just asimportantly, he has done so with honor and was (according to directorCameron Crowe) a prime inspiration for the agent with a heart in thefilm JerryMaguire. Now, arguing that value-driven negotiating techniquescan prove equally productive in other settings, Steinberg lays out hisstep-by-step process in Winning with Integrity: Getting What You'reWorth Without Selling Your Soul. Steinberg takes a holistic viewon the art of negotiation. In the introduction, he writes:

This is a book about the process of negotiation--whichmeans that this is a book about life.... Too many people would rathersimply give up what they want. They would rather avoid the discomfortof possible conflict by accepting a situation or terms withoutdiscussion, even when it means accepting less than they rightfullydeserve or desire.
Steinberg analyzes the entire negotiating process--from preparationand positioning through the actual negotiation and celebratoryhandshake. And not surprisingly, he enlivens his advice with colorfuland entertaining stories taken from his dealings with notableadversaries ranging from the NFL's Jerry Jones to the NBA's LarryBird. Suggestions for crafting an initial offer with different typesof opponents are exceptionally insightful, but the real heart of thematerial concerns the period between counteroffer and deal signing, where Steinberg candidly explains how he realizes his goals withoutviolating his principles. --Howard Rothman ... Winning with Integrityis a great self help guide for the Jerry Maguire to be. The author helps the reader to realize that it is all in negotiating. Whether it is how successful you are in life to life in general if you cannot negotiates well, you'll go nowhere.
Even though the author does seem a bit self absorbed the reader is able to see how negotiating well will help you get ahead. Leigh Steinberg has negotiated more than 1 billion dollars in contracts for the athletes he represents famous athletes such as, Troy Aikman and Kordell Stewart he also spent 24 years as a sports agent living by his own strict moral rules. Mostly everyone in the "sports world" knows of Steinberg and they follow his moral standards. He was the inspiration for the film Jerry Maguire, "SSHHHOOOWWW MMEEEEE TTHHHEEEE MMMOOONNNEEEYYYY!!!!!''

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
This book is pretty much a joke. There are some useful points on negotiating, but by and large the author goes out of his way to pat himself on the back for his career success.Obviously Leigh Steinberg has plenty of lessons to teach aspiring negotiators, agents, etc., but a more even approach--i.e. listing actually conflicts or problems (as opposed to those that amazingly Leigh resolved through sheer brilliance and perseverance)--would have made for much better reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to learn about negotiation with sports world examples?
For a recently college graduate and moderate sports world observer with little experience negotiating in a business environment, this book was a pleasure to read. The concepts in this book are on or above par with my textbook on negotiation. However, I specifically enjoyed how Steinberg illustrates important concepts with stories involving the ever interesting personalities of professional sports. From establishing values to finalizing the contract, this book is efficiently organized to lead through the negotiation process. Also, at the end of each sub-chapter is a summary of the key points of the reading. Winning with integrity isn't easy in general, let alone in the ruthless world of sports agents. Leigh shares his experiences that have lead to his success in this fun and insightful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Framework for Negotiating!
I found this book to be a real treasure and entertaining at the same time. And best of all, you don't need to be a sports fan to appreciate the examples Steinberg uses.

It is a shame that some readers have found this book shallow and only written to brag about his exploits. They are missing the real point of the book and the positive outcomes that can happen from true negotiating, not just getting what you want.If you are looking for a book on 'How to be Persuasive and Always get What you Want', this is not your book.

Rather, it helped me build a solid mental foundation and frameworkwhen I enter negotiations. Also, you need to have the right attitude when you enter negotiations. This book will help you.

There are some remarkable examples that provided me with some real insights on perceptions. It opened my eyes that the world I see is not what everyone else sees. With his examples, I began to see how that applies to the business world as well.

I own a company that provides HR and OD consulting and I get emails EVERY day about hostile work environments. In many cases I refer them to this book to make sure their perception of the problem is on track with the problematic person.

If you are looking at this book for ANY reason, I suggest you buy it.Also, because of all the famous people involved in the negotiations, it was an easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is a refreshing book, that counters WINNING THROUGH INTIMIDATION type books, that portray the business world as a jungle, where you have to negotiate with knives drawn. Steinberg practices integrity in his businesslife, and in his personal life. Steinberg actually lives down the streetfrom me (although I don't know him), and he does wonderful things for thelocal community, that seem to come from the heart, rather than from achance to be seen publicly as a benefactor, and pat himself on the back. Heis in inspiration. And a nice guy who finished first! ... Read more
