Heartfelt Stories....we should all feel again! Thanks Gene!
Enjoyed this book a great deal! Gene made me feel again! I didn't realize until reading this book that I had forgotten how to be human . All I can do is thank Gene! It was Sunday reading but the stories I will remember for a long time!

glimmers of brilliance
I love My French Whore and admired The Woman Who Wouldn't so I approached Wilder's new book of short stories with anticipation.I'll be minimal in my comments, a quality Wilder admires in literature and art.A few glittering gems in the bunch, the rest not good enough.

Keep the books coming though.Gene Wilder's voice and touch as an author are singular and distintive.He can hit it out of the park.Just not this time.

The hearts of love
Gene Wilder'slittle book of 12 love stories, is unpredictable and yes even a bit unconventional. The stories tell of love and lovers. They are insightful, from the story of first love and those intimate times together to the tales of lost love and obtuse behavior that results in no love at all. The narratives are of the young and the old, done with some pathos, but always the thoughtful wisdom of someone who has known love, lost and found it again.

The stories are really not explicit, but I would avoid giving this charming book to someone with conservative, delicate sensibilities. It would make an enchanting gift for a sweetheart or someone else of whatever age- in love.

Wilder at Heart
I think it is something of a crime that Gene Wilder has retired from acting.I know there aren't many leading roles for a guy in his mid 70s with a face like his, but there's still no reason he can't take a supporting part here or there.These days, Wilder is happy just spending his days at home in Connecticut with his wife Karen, painting watercolors, listening to classical music, surfing the Web, and watching old movies on TV.He spends most of his mornings and afternoons writing.Since publishing his memoir in 2005, Wilder has turned out one book almost every other year.

Gene Wilder's latest musings on love, sex, and romance is a collection of twelve short stories entitled "What Is This Thing Called Love?"Not every story is a winner but three or four are outstanding, a few are very good, and a few just really don't amount to much.But as a whole, it is a breezy, entertaining diversion.

Wilder writes three stories about his late cousin Buddy Silberman, a nice guy who was always looking for love but ultimately just settled for sex.The opening story, "The Birthday," is probably the best one in the book as we meet the bubbly Buddy, whose gregarious personality is a mask for his own physical insecurities.

"The Kiss" is a charming story about a poor young man who falls in love with a girl a few years his junior, only to have his heart broken when she runs off with someone else.The friendship he develops with the girl's equally upset father is beautifully written.The last story, "Passion," is a moving account of a chauffeur falling in love with an unusual Czech artist he has been hired to drive from her home in Connecticut to an art gallery in New York City.

For readers not familiar with Gene Wilder's background or personal life, the stories will be nonetheless enjoyable.For me, who spent fifteen years writing a biography of Wilder, I found a lot of things in the book particularly poignant and interesting.He uses his mother's maiden name for his hero in "Passion."He sets several of the stories in his hometown of Milwaukee.Most bizarre, though, is a story called "The Anniversary," in which he uses the actual date he and his wife Karen married, describes the wife in the story exactly as Karen looks, and then goes for a really morbid ending.

Like Wilder's two previous novellas - "My French Whore" and "The Woman Who Wouldn't" - this book, like Wilder himself, is gentle, quirky, and hard not to like.While I know I am not alone in wishing Wilder was spending his time in front of the camera, we should be thankful that at least he's still entertaining us with the written word. ... Most enjoyed by fans
I'm a big fan of Gene WIlder and of Gilda Radner, and I loved reading "Bunny, Bunny" because I love hearing stories about her. I suppose that's one of the bigger reasons I wanted to read this book.
It's a good read for young actors or writers with passion for theater, wondering how the ones they admire became the ones they admire. However, Wilder's prose are kind of... lack luster? Really straight forward and simple sentences, to the point that it isn't as engaging as I felt it could have been. Some sections were honestly a little boring (and it kills me to say that about a man whose work I love so much!).
The Gilda years were my favorite, and I do recommend this book if you're a Gene Wilder fan. More casual readers could probably do with barrowing a copy from the library.

Sadly, I now don't like Gene Wilder
Before I read this book I had enjoyed Gene Wilder as a performer, and I thought, as a person.I now feel that he has shown himself to be self-centered and uncaring.He is not a person I would ever want to meet and I cannot watch any film that he is in.This read left me sad, but not like a sad story.It left me sad because it was real and he showed himself to be unfeeling and uncaring about anyone other than himself. I feel that he harmed the people with whom he had relationships.The saddest thing is that I don't think he ever saw himself as a cold person. He just continues on with his life, treating people as if they were nothing more than stage props. Rather than re-sell this book, I threw it in the trash. I recommend spending your money on a better read. One that I enjoyed was "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," by Mark Haddon.

Worst autobiography I've ever read
I suppose I should've known by the book's title that Wilder was playing his cards close to the chest when he wrote the book. It's mostly about his career. His disclosure about his life comes out in tidbits and, at times, feel inconsequential. There's a part where he mentions his dad died then goes on about his career like it was no more than a cold day. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because there were some interesting insights into working with Richard Pryor and Gilda Radner, but the book could've been much deeper. The guy has been a brilliant actor. But there are parts of his life he doesn't want to show the public, I get that, and if you're okay with that then read it. Otherwise, put it down.

If you love Gene...
you need this book. It's a sweet, funny, insightful look at himself and his 'early days' as an actor and a person.His voice is loud and clear and you'll love him even more when you're finished!

Remarkable.
I think this is a beautiful book. I have only ever seen Gene Wilder in one movie (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory) so I definitely did not know anything about him when I picked up "Kiss Me Like A Stranger.' Straight away I was transfixed. I felt his warmth and his heart bouncing off the pages, he made me feel for him and I kept reading hoping and praying for a 'happy ending'. I admire the way he is so candid and so honest...and perhaps he leaves things out that others believe should be in there (I wouldn't know as I know nothing about him other that what I have read in his book) but I believe what he does share tells a lot and that we cannot ask for more. He seems like a witty, gentle, soft man and I thoroughly enjoyed his book. I would recommend it. ... Read more

Short, Quaint, Fantastic
My French Whore is a fantastic short comedy/romance novel set during World War I.If this had been written by someone else, I probably wouldn't have liked it nearly as much, but I couldn't help but imagine a younger Wilder playing the role of his protagonist Private Peachy in a Mel Brooks film. Every word on paper is read as if Wilder's voice is narrating it. It is very short, and for most of you could probably be read in 1-2 hours. I'd be shocked if this book isn't adapter for the screen.

Wilder makes you care about the people in this story
MY FRENCH WHORE;A Love Story, by Gene Wilder (180 pgs., 2007).This is Gene Wilder's first novel.I don't know how many screenplays or movies he's written; but this book is easily adaptable to the stage or screen.The writing is crisp, terse & to the point.Nothing is extraneous.At the end, Wilder thanks Hemingway for being one of his two mentors.I'm sure, if Hemingway can read a copy of this book wherever he has wound up, he'll be proud of his mentee.
This short novel takes place in WWI, circa 1917.Wilder, with just a few deft touches is able to make the reader feel as if he is indeed has traveled back in time. The plot is simple.An American private has just landed in France.He speaks German fluently.He helps in the interrogation of a famous German double agent spy, who has given himself up because he can see that Germany has lost the war & because his cover has been blown in Great Britain.The American turns coward when in their first charge out of the trenches his two best friends are killed on either side of him.He flees into the forest.He is captured by a squad of German soldiers.They plan to execute him via the firing squad.Somehow, with nothing to loose, he impersonates the German spy.The spy is very famous, but is known by just a few people.The American bluffs his way up the German chain of command until he is quartered with the German military who give him his Colonel's uniform & believe he is their famous spy.He falls in love with a French woman who has been working asa whore for the Germans to survive & to stop her German General stepfather from raping her after her mother's death.Her father is killed on the Russian front.She continues to work as a a high class whore.Only for high ranking officers.An American officer is captured.He turns out to be the commanding officer of the American.The American is able to facilitate his escape.Instead of fleeing with his captain, he returns to his French love.Eventually, he is unmasked by a German General who knew the actual spy the American has been impersonating.We know his story from a notebook the American kept & upon the morning of his execution, had given to his French lover.She in turn mailed it to his Captain upon the end of the war.Was he really executed?
The plot sounds prosaic when written this way.However, Wilder's writing makes you care about the people in this story; especially, the American private who became a German Colonel & the French girl who became a whore to survive.The famous comic actor is a world class novelist.

Great Quick Read
I read this book in about 2 hours and it was a great story.It left me wanting more.Loved the characters and the plot, this would make for a fun movie.

A great short read
This book is short and easy to get through, but you will be sorry it is over so soon! The main character is unknowingly witty and warm.There are many funny bits but also romance and love.I enjoyed this little book.

Charming and Delightful Read

I'm normally a reader of love stories, but....
It's easy to imagine a young Gene Wilder as the protagonist in the gentle, lovely volume.The "action" unfolds sweetly and always with a wry smile.The characters are those I would like to have dinner with - characters that I found myself WANTING to succeed, to flourish, to blossom and grow.I enjoyed my time with them.

A Tiny Treasure
They say that good things come in small packages, and in this case, they are right. This book is a tiny treasure. Concise and tender, this story is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours.

When Jeremy, a concert violinist, has a nervous breakdown, he is forced to go to a German spa for a rest. Thus begins a romance with Clara, a young woman dying with cancer. It is also a beginning to Jeremy's metamorphosis from a flirt into a sensitive, loving, self-sacrificing man. I love this gentle little story!

very short and very sweet
This is a very short novella.You start and before you know it, it's over. It's a charming story set in an Alpine sanatorium in 1903.A violinist has had a nervous breakdown.He meets a young woman, another patient, and falls instantly in love with her.It helps to have Anton Chekhov also in residence, perhaps already working on his next short story.Although I knew the premise and set-up from the other reviews, I had no idea how it was going to end, so I got hooked immediately.It was very easy to visualize this as a lush Merchant Ivory film full of rich period detail.It was also easy to imagine that Gene Wilder was dealing with his relationship with Gilda Radner as he wrote this.It's very charming, sweet, and cinematic.I can fully recommend it.

Sweetly seductive
'The Woman Who Wouldn't' reads quickly and leaves a lasting impression. Gene Wilder creates a world of intimacy with his concise, lyrical prose and the silly events that bewilder Jeremy Webb. This is a fun, whimsically romantic read perfect for a Saturday afternoon.

a collection of niceness in a world gone cold & cynical
The Woman Who Wouldn't, by Gene Wilder (172 pgs., 2008).This is Gene Wilder's second novel & third published book.His first book was a memoir.While this book is fiction, I could not help but think of the love affair & marriage that Wilder had with Gilda Radner & which had tragically been cut short by her losing battle with ovarian cancer.
If one didn't know the real life story of Gene Wilder, this book would still be a beautiful read.It's a sweet story.It's heartwarming.It's a collection of niceness in a world gone so cold & so cynical in its present makeup.
Succinctly, it's 1903 & a brilliant young American violinist has suffered a nervous breakdown in public during a concert.Eventually, he is sent off to a sanitarium in Germany for help.This consists of eating healthy meals, taking long hikes in the surrounding hills, getting therapeutic massages, going to the spa & speaking to a Dr. who sounds awfully Freudian at a time when Freud's influence in psychiatry was still young.
Jeremy, the violinist, meets a beautiful young woman named Clara.Soon, he learns she has come there to live out the rest of her life, as she is dying from stomach cancer.Her husband left her when he found out she was ill & her father had the marriage annulled.It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that as Jeremy gets better he falls more & more in love with Clara.
In a twist, although not that much of an unexpected twist, Clara asks Jeremy if he will marry her.She does this right after they have seen a specialist & he has given them the bad news that nothing more can be done for her.Jeremy agrees to wed Clara & the rites are performed by the Mayor of the town.What happens in the ensuing pages reminds me of what Wilder had hoped would happen to his beloved Gilda.
I loved this slim volume.It renews the reader's faith in the power of love to conquer all.At least to still be able to conquer all, in the fictional world.I cried & could even see tears rolling down Wilder's face as he wrote some of these pages.Gene Wilder is a very emotive & evocative writer.Kudos to him! ... Reading Prognosis Is Remarkable
Gilda Radner was a comedienne that is remembered as the years pass as a unique character, especially as one of the original cast of Saturday Night Live.Her Roseanne Roseannadanna or Baba Wawa skits were enough to make someone collapse to the floor from laughter.She married fellow actor Gene Wilder, whom we remember from such film as Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein.They were a happy and no doubt "comical" pair; however, Gilda was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer on October 25, 1986.She had been having symptoms previously, but the doctors had been unable to detect the signs of the disease until that time.She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and many other treatments but passed away on May 20, 1989.After her death, her husband kept her memory alive with his actions to bring about ovarian cancer awareness.
Gilda's Disease by Dr. Steven Piver and Gene Wilder talks about a remarkable woman.The book is written from three perspectives: It has insight from Gilda's autobiography It's Always Something, insights and an introduction from Gene Wilder, and medical knowledge from Dr. Piver.The book not only describes Gilda and Gene's last years together, but also the medical aspect of what happened and why.It is a very informative text, and has a very good description of a first-hand experience of cancer.It explains how cancer is a multitude of diseases that are characterized by the unrestrained growth of mutated cells.It describes the genetic defects of cancer cells, like the mutation of the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 proteins.
The book was very powerful, with pieces that were full of sorrow and laughter.Because it's not written by Gilda, we sympathize with both her and her husband by hearing the story from both sides.The book teaches how to deal with cancer and how it can affect anyone's life.It teaches that time is priceless and that a positive outlook can mean so much.It also stresses early detection, especially for women at high risk for ovarian cancer.It does not scare the reader but brings about awareness of what to do if you are at risk, and how to lower your risks.I would highly recommend this book for someone who wishes to find more about ovarian cancer or how to deal with it either personally or with someone else, and even to someone who simply wants a good read.It really is an excellent book, and the prognosis of the book is remarkable.

Great Primer on Ovarian Cancer
I was healthy, young and active when,out of the blue, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.The next thing I knew they cut me up, filled me with poison (chemo), blasted me into premature menopause and made my hair fall out.I was so overwhelmed.

A kind friend gave me this book. It gave me a clue about what was happening. I read and re-read it and began to understand my disease.With understanding comes hope.

If you know someone with ovarian cancer -- give them (and yourself) this book.

A great first read after diagnosis.Very informative about the why's and wherefore's regarding ovarian cancer made personal with excerpts from Gilda's Radner's book:It's Always Something (a great second read).

Theauthor writes with authority and compassion, a rather rare combination inthe medical profession.A welcomed book at a time when one needs factscombined with heart.

I laughed as I wept;life-or-death questions answered.
One of the most feared cancers is ovarian cancer, with good reason.It may be asymptomatic; what early symptoms do appear are vague, diffuse, and often are not taken seriously by either women or their doctors.As a result, the disease is often advanced before diagnosis occurs--as in the tragic case of Gilda Radner.

This book lives up to its subtitle:sharing personal experiences and a medical perspective on ovarian cancer.The personal experiences are excerpts from Gilda's book "It'sAlways Something", excerpts from letters to Gene Wilder, and comments from him.I defy any one to be unmoved by these pages. The voice of the cancer victim and the cancer survivor come through, sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, always honest.

The medical perspective, interwoven with the pertinent experiences, is equally valuable.I think it is superb.Dr. Piver has a remarkable talent for clear and succinct treatment of such complex and scary topics as surgical staging, the 30 different types of ovarian cancer, survival rates and alternative therapies.His historical perspective and obvious mastery of the field enable him to answer the most difficult question--with a minimum of gobbledegook, and with up-to-date information.This book is almost like having a humane and sympathetic gynecological oncologist across the desk.

Of course, this book could save your life or that of someone you love.Information is one of the best weapons we have against this killer.I am in awe of how much information and wisdom these gentlemen have packed into 184 pages.I could not recommend it more highly. ... Read more
