Need Unabridged Audio
I find Betty White's life very intersting, and her sense of timing and humor is wonderful. I only wish I could find this book on Cd and unabridged.

"The One And Only Betty White"
Not many celebrities can say they are enjoying a renaissance and resurgence in their careers at the tender age of 88, but Betty White is not your every day celebrity. In 2010 Betty became the oldest performer to host "Saturday Night Live" (for which she won an Emmy), plus she continues to work in movies and primetime TV, most recently in TV Land's "Hot In Cleveland". She also had a memorable role on the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful" and she continues to appear in commercials. Suddenly Betty White is everywhere.

With a career that has spanned sixty years on television, Betty White continues to shine and is an example to other celebrities who have reached that certain age that it doesn't matter how old you are; just keep working and love what your doing.

Full of fun and laughter
I had read another book "In Person" by Betty White a few years ago - and it was a side splitter. I have always been a big fan of hers anyway - and enjoy her immensely.

This book is no exception. She is talking about how her career and TV's career started about the same time. She gives insight into early television and her part in that whole genre. She talks about her "addiction" to work and her willingness to fill in whenever she is needed - and the break neck schedule she had in the beginning.

Have not gotten through the book yet - but have really enjoyed reading what I have. Betty in writing is as funny as Betty on TV.

Pick it up if you would like to see the infancy of TV from an insider's view - and if you want a good laugh!! This book supplies both very well.

Delightful Lady - Disappointing book
I give book reviews, and since Betty White is "all the rage" right now, I thought this would be a good book to read and give the review before a particular ladies' group.But alas!The writing is terrible, the book boring, and I wish I'd never ordered it. Needless to say, I will not be presenting a review on this book.

This Story Will Truly Warm Your Heart
I picked up this book, one night when i couldn't sleep. Hoping to be bored to tears so i could finally drift off. This is not what happened. I found myself staying up all night hanging on Betty's every word, absorbed in her life, and opinions. It provided an escape for a couple hours. I only wish it had been longer! This is one of my favorite books, and I would recomend it to anyone who likes to read. It is a very easy read, but a fantastic one. It may be hard to find because it is out of print, but i urge you to find it! It is a rare gem that people pass up all to often! They look at the cover, and see Betty White, then dismiss it as boring. But you will love it, THAT i can guarentee you. It will set your soul at ease for an hour or two. Just relax with some hot tea, in your favorite chair, and read it. You won't be sorry! ... Read more

What a feel good read!
This is an amazing read.It runs the emotional gamut of agonizing lows and effervescent highs.I laughed and cried, mostly, found myself rooting for and encouraging the main character, Brendon.The author does an excellent job of taking you through Brendan's torture at the loss of his sight and subsequent depression without drowning the reader in misery, however, on Brendan good days, when things start to improve, you are right there with Brendan as he feels life return.This is easily the best book I have read in a LONG time.Most of the books I read here lately will get passed on for others to enjoy, but I will hang on to this one.A definite keeper.

Wonderful book!
Tom Sullivan is such a great writer, and now we get to hear him tell the story in his own voice--along with Betty White. Not only is it a great story, but it also provides much valuable information about living with blindness and information about dog guides.You will love it!

A Sight to See
Together: A Novel of Shared Vision
I found the book to be uplifting and inspiring.I know alot about guide dogs and their ability to assist those who are not sighted, but it is wonderful to read a story that gives so much background and talks about the difficulties both dog and new master have in adjusting to one another.
A nice book to read when one is feeling a little down!

Together ties it together
The book drew my attention because I retired after years as a National Park Ranger and more years as a wilderness specialist, concluding my career working for access to wilderness and the back country for persons with disabilities. We were also "puppy raisers" for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our best friend has also traveled with us, around the U.S. and abroad, with her dog guide. The story does an excellent service in giving those who have NOT had experience with disability or service animals, exposure to the fantastic love, intelligence, and unlimited promise, of these "best friends".For those learning to adopt to a disability, it also offers not just sentimental "hope", but a very real introduction to how the world will change, NOT end, for those who must adapt. Sullivan and White also show that dog may really be "God" spelled backward. I recommend the book. Having spent years in search and rescue, the two important "drama points" of the book regarding mountaineering also serve as proof that even "experienced" people do some dumb things they should NOT when dealing with the mountain. So even those "able bodied" folks heading for the hills can take away a lesson in what NOT to do. ... Read more

An advanced book simply written
As someone who works with deep trance channeling as a profession and who has a strong interest in the subject of consciousness, I found this book to be extremely interesting, as it parallels my own experience with a very talented open deep trance channel. It is also not that far from the experiences of Jane Roberts and Robert Butts. The "group" of two channels that formed is enlightening for students of trance channeling and somewhat rare as a published account. Betty's friends, who wrote "Our Unseen Guest" under a pen name make the dynamic all that more interesting.

If you have a serious interest in trance channeling, this is a good book to add to your collection. It was written so many years before "Seth Speaks" that it is almost amazing that Jane Roberts and Robert Butts may never have seen it. If they had, it may have accelerated their own experiences.

Disappointing reading
I was so taken by an online description of this book that I impulsively ordered The Unobstructed Universe and Across the Unknown, part of a sequence, with it.I got so bored with The Betty Book--and it is in my favorite genre of reading--that I could not finish the second half.Writing in the pre-1940s was a lot more cumbersome, I guess, and the revelations of the book were less than clear and less than astounding.I almost always finish books I have paid for, but it looks like these three will be exceptions.For me the most interesting part of the book was its cover illustration.

I wanted to love this set of three books.It will be surprising if I even open the other two.That doesn't necessarily mean The Betty Book is poorly written and edited--the mechanics of the writing are fine--and someone with more patience for the writing of an earlier time may enjoy this book.

Oh well, sometimes you take a chance and it does not work out as expected!

valuable book
Stewart Edward White recorded information from his medium wife Betty until her death and then purportedly continued to receive such information from her thereafter.At least he isn't claiming it's from God like Neale Walsch!My review of Walsch's "Conversations with God" are appropos here as well.BUT...the words of this book resonate far better.Furthermore, White followed it up with one of the great classics of metaphysics, "The Unobstructed Universe."The "Betty Book" is a fine (almost necessary) introduction to "The Unobstructed Universe."The world view presented in these works (wherever they actually came from) is profound, logical, and fills in many a void in other metaphysical systems.So, if you are turned off by the stated source, just ignore it and read on.Frankly, almost all the books I read are replete with the author's personality, predispositions, assumptions, etc.--it's hard to read between the lines and to separate the wheat from the chaff.In this book, however, that only applies to the source.The material (and, especially in the following volume) is first rate.White also wrote 5 or 6 additional spiritual works which are lesser lights but worth reading.Be aware, however, that he was a professional writer of Westerns.The other spiritual books of his I've read are: "Anchors to Windward," "The Job of Living," "The Road I Know," "The Stars Are Still There," and "With Folded Wings."

Best metaphysics book ever -objective forthe sceptic.
This and White's follow-up books Across the Unkwown and the Unobstructed Universe are extremely objective yet cover the deepest levels we can ever hope to understand.Written so that even a beginner can follow yet amazingly profound. I'd also consider it the best self-help book around, as the importance and long-term signifigance of even our smallest acts is stressed throughout.These books focus on YOU and a METHOD OF LIVING, and don't even discuss reincarnation, etc. They focus on the most important issues.

Another wonderful book by Tom Sullivan
I have always admired both authors.Tom Sullivan for having a fulfilling life despite blindness and Betty White for her work with animals.

Other readers said the book wasn't factual and too sweet.I found it heartwarming and a wonderful read.It touched me very much.I recommend it to anyone and hope that some of the "non-facts" can be overlooked.

Couldn't put the book down!
I throughly enjoyed reading "Alive Day." I am not much of a book reader, but I love this author and all the books he has written. Once I started reading the book it was hard to put it down. It is easy reading. If you have ever owned a dog you will enjoy this book. I think it is important to read the first book "Together" before reading this sequel to the first story.

A Dog Story that Tugs at Your Heart
If you like stories about our relationships with dogs, then this book does not disappoint! It's filled with rich prose, love and compassion. Get out the Kleenex for this one as you'll certainly need it. A moving story about a blind man who comes to terms with his own life through the love and support of a beautiful black Labrador, this is a nice read. How great to have a book like this to lift your spirits in a time when we're hit with so many negative messages in the media! I loved this book and will read it several times!

In spite of a great base idea, bad writing drags it down
I like therapy dogs, I really do. I even have one. And so the idea of this book was very compelling for me. But (and I don't want to disparge the author in any way) the writing in this book is just plain bad. The dialog was completely robatic and the text was filled with lists about real life famouse people-often in the very dialog itself. "Alive Dat" reminded me very much (not to despariage CPA's) of fiction written by a CPA, or computer program. The plot was predictable and while the book overall is not un-readable, I was vastly relieved when it was over.

Trust Golden Girl Betty White's review...
Betty White, aka Rose Nylund, co-wrote the first book in this two-book tale about a man and his dog. Some of that Rose Nylund sweetness comes off in Tom Sullivan's writing. He flies solo on this one and, like his blind hero Brenden McCarthy, manages most adeptly, thanks to a four-footed muse named Nelson, Brenden's guide dog.

Nelson is, in the words of other characters, "a real cool dog" and "a wonder dog". He is the scene-stealer as all animals tend to be. He faces stiff competition from paraplegic and bitter Corporal Antwone Carver, Carver's wife Darla, a character who can be described as Doctor McChauvinist, Brenden's well-drawn, sympathetic, and likeable wife Kat as well as his children, and Dr. Marvin Barnes, retired military, football-playing blind, Brenden's former therapist who loves cigars and breaks the rules. He also delivers a soliloquy on race (Carver and Barnes are African-American) that is gutsy.

The book also takes on the difficulties of veterans coming home, the reality of military life, with a message that is (gasp) fair to our men and women in uniform and their family, espcially when Antwone describes his attempts "to help [Iraqis] bild a school or fix a road" while facing insurgency.

This book aims for a feeling of reality that can't quite restrain an idealistic joie de vivre. Antwone Carver suspects Brenden of condescension (and is afraid of Nelson), but Brenden's own disability and soul, not to mention passion for basketball, forge a heartwarming connection.

A Great Reference for Any White House Afficianado
What a great addition to my collection of WHITE HOUSE books and memorabilia.This well-written, well-researched and beautifully photographed book gives the detail that is sometimes missing in the more general WHITE HOUSE history or antecdotal writings.It is a good "stand alone" and would be a great "living room" collection book in any case, but for those who enjoy the rich history of D.C. this is a jewel.I recommend it.

President's Park
The White House is just an amazing facility, it's a museum, the President's Residence, and the embodiment of the Executive Branch.This book is exhaustively researched, and the photographs are well done.Though it is really not a history of the first families, the book really consentrates on furnishings, and the changes made to the structure over the centuries.The White House serves so many duties and thanks to Jackie O, the historic furnishing have returned and subsequent first ladies and curators have continued her pursuit of historic period furnishings.This book does a wonderful job of highlighting the best of the White House Collection.If you like books of this sort then you will enjoy this book dedicated to one of the iconic symbols of democracy.

A misleading title
This is a beautiful book with exquisite layout and photographs. However, the title gives the impression that we will find information on the First Families, which certainly is not so. It is a very good coffee table book on interior design, design, furnishings, architecture, etc. but since I expected photos and information on people,I was somewhat dissappointed with its contents. But it is a work of art.

An Excellent Resource for Any Library
Betty Monkman, the White House Curator and photographer Bruce White (from the Metropolitan Museum of Art) have collaborated to create an invaluable text on the history of the furnishings of The White House.Wonderful stories lie within...most famously, the story behind the Resolute Desk, the desk used by Presidents Kennedy, Carter, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and now President George W. Bush in their respective Oval Offices.

On June 1st at 6PM, Ms. Monkman will deliver a lecture on The White House as part of exhibition presented by the John F. Kennedy Library and The Metropolitan Museum "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years-Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum".The exhibit will begin May 1, 2001 until July 29, 2001.This will be a great opportunity for one to hear Ms. Monkman's expertise in person.Go to the lecture and buy the book!

Unduly Harsh - Belittles Influence of Betty Ford
This book made no real effort to consider the alchemy of the Ford marriage - looking at and attempting to analyze the private and personal influence of the First Lady on the President - it simply deals with the face value of public reaction. Thus is severely underrates the influence of Betty Ford. There is a lack of any human depth to this work and in attempting to be dry and objective, entirely loses what was the unique kind of power that First Ladies like Betty Ford can have - different no doubt than those who undertake specific legislative agendas, but one that the public responded to. The wrong author for a great subject.

A woman ahead of her time
Because the current Republican first lady easily can double as an extra in a "Stepford Wives" film, we must not forget that she is only one, and certainly does not reflect all her predecessors within either the White House institution or the Republican Party. Betty Ford certainly proved that.

John Robert Greene's biography of Betty Ford does justice to a woman who was so clearly ahead of her time, and certainly not afraid to admit it either. Whether people love or hate her, they ultimately admit that Betty Ford has ideas of her own.Greene, a historian, previously authored biographies on George H.W. Bush and (appropriately) Gerald Ford.

After Spiro T. Agnew and Richard Nixon's resignations, Gerald Ford unexpectedly became the nation's president.Although he is relatively liberal by current Republican standards (which was issue of contention in the 1976 Republican primary) Ford was conservative when compared to his own wife.

Even though she was from the World War II era generation---who weren't supposed to support women's liberation, Ford instead championed the Equal Rights Amendment and gave public thanks that abortion was `brought out of the back woods' in interviews which were undoubtedly path-breaking in their own day.

In a time when the new right was preparing for the Reagan and Bush eras, Betty Ford was a true lightning rod. Effectively defusing an idea that only `radicals' or `wide eyed youth' wanted policy AND cultural changes, she helped to successfully infuse women's rights with a public `respectability' that several other public female supporters were not able to achieve in 1974-1976. Being First Lady gave Mrs. Ford the ability to draw middle America to the very social movements which they otherwise might have feared.

For instance, after finding a lump in her own breast, Mrs. Ford encouraged other women to talk about breast cancer---and promoted the early detection which is now commonplace in America. Because then prevailing sentiment had been to `keep quiet' and attempt treating cancer in later and ultimately more difficult stages, Mrs. Ford has saved many women's lives. When compared against the Republican Party's subsequent and current `pro-family' ideology which actually attempts hiding frank discussions of human anatomy, her actions truly were `pro-life'.

For all its celebration, the book does pointedly acknowledge that Ford had a substance abuse problem. Again turning personal experience into public enlightenment/growth, Ford lent her name to the Betty Ford treatment center in California. If the center has subsequently become the stuff of pop culture, it also has humanized first ladies; they experience problems AND also have opinions how to end those problems.

Even if she was never actually a co-president and was generally content as First Lady, Betty Ford had ultimately opened the door for successors Rosalyn Carter and Hillary Rodham Clinton to increase the public role in ways which Eleanor Roosevelt had only dreamt about. This book is recommended for historians and political scientists, particularly those interested in theories about the power and influence of First Ladies on public policy.

Great introduction to the White House
This was the best book I purchased to prepare my 10-year-old for an upcoming trip to DC. The format is in black and white which was a cool difference from most books and even though he is an advanced reader, this book is packed with information which was new to him.

White Power - White Pride
My opinion when it comes to Amazon is a constant one it seems. The book arrived very speedily, in the condition it was described as being. Amazon is a very good method of making purchases of new and used books as there ever was. I couldn't be more satisfied with the service.

Very Well Organized
I am an African American and I must say that I am impressed by what I read.The structure of the book was good and the readability helps you along in most areas. I particularly enjoyed the sections that quoted actual members of the various organizations. This book will be one of the "Standard" books you will judge other works on.

The book does a great job at explaining the divisions within the movement.We see the structures of the skin heads, kkk, kkkk, Christian identity and other influentual white groups in America. The book discusses the movements leaders and interaction with other seperatist groups and racial groups. I was shocked to see how much selfishness, ego's and fanatical religious beliefs have stopped the movement from reaching its full potential. It would seem members themselves more than the government have stunted its growth.

I was very cautious in the beginning because the authors seemed like they were advocates for the movements and had subtle sympathy. This made me a little cautious because they clamed to not have a bias opinion from the start, but this relative tension only lasted the first couple of chapters. Other then that it was a pretty good read.

The deliniated approach this subject, the hours spent in interviews, the 'question and answer' forms they sent out to bring all these disparate voices together, sums up their professional review of this important matter. The White Separatist Movement in United States: White Power White Pride is a very fair book written by two Left wing feminists who try very hard to keep their feeling of hate and disgust for us out of the book, and they do a very good job.
This is a well researched book. These ladies spent a lot of money and time traveling America to talk to many people in the movement. They did not just rehash some old ADL reports like most reporters do, and the book is proof of their hard work. This is a fresh look at the movement through the eyes of two Left wing Eggheads. To show you how far to the Left they are, in the back of the book they called the super liberal rag The New Republic a right wing publication. I got a real kick out of that.
This is a great book for an overview of the race movement in America. A lot of good info and most of it is correct, at least from their worldview of us.
These ladies interviewed me last summer for a book on Odinism they are planning to write. I don't know what they're going to call it. Also, a man named Mardell is coming out with a book on Asatru called the Gods of Blood. Which will be coming out soon. ... Read more
