Great, fast read, exposing the author clearly.
It reads quickly, but there is a lot there.The many stories leave one with a very clear image of who Wil Wheaton is; his written voice, his insecurities, his hopes, and his effort to find himself and his place in the world.To be honest, it is clear that Wil is a little bit messed up - victimized in a way by his own expectations for greater acting success for himself, although he seems to be adjusting to where he has actually come to be.
This book is not about big issues and it is not about the greater human pathos; it offers a clear look at one human's hopes and insecurities.This is what makes it such an interesting read.

Wil Wheaton is much cooler than Wesley Crusher
This book is surprisingly "engage"-ing.(Hardy har har, sorry, couldn't resist!)Just a Geek features selected entries from Wil Wheaton's blog, chronicling his struggles to define himself apart from being a former Star Trek actor.I was impressed by Wheaton's honesty.Some of his earlier blog entries are less than flattering, and he is very candid in his explanations of why he wrote what he did.There are enough anecdotes about his experiences on the show and later interactions with the Star Trek cast and crew to satisfy "trekkies" as he puts it (didn't Wil get the memo that it is Trekkers now?), but ultimately Wheaton meets his objective of making the reader see him as Wil Wheaton as opposed to Wesley Crusher.

Excellent book, poor Kindle formatting
The book itself is a good read.An insightful look into Wil Wheaton's (failing) struggle to maintain an acting career, and dealing with the self-doubt and regret over leaving Star Trek.

I won't say much about the book other than it's good, you should check it out.


What I'd like to talk more about is the Kindle version's publishing of the book.

I'd give the book 4 or 5 stars, but the formatting I would give 2 or 3.
I'm not going to punish Wil for his publisher's mistakes, though.

Something that annoys me is when publishers think making an ebook is just a matter of hitting "export" on whatever conversion tool they use.There is more to it, they need to actually take the time to proof the result.

There are two main issues with the Kindle version of "Just a Geek":

FORMATTING
A lot of the book is Wil quoting a blog post he did, and then following up with what he was really feeling when he wrote it, and the process of what he decided to share and not share with the public.But there is no visual separation in the Kindle version between the end of the blog post and the beginning of the commentary, so it's often difficult to figure out what's what.There are also typos and things that look like artifacts of the ebook exporting process than the original content (example: chapter heads like "April'S Fool" - where the publishers capitalization rule is bad and considers apostrophe the same as a space - even a cursory glance by a human proofreader would have caught "April'S").

IMAGES
Apparently there were nice illustrations that were omitted from the Kindle version.Take a look at Mary Roach's "Packing for Mars" - the Kindle is perfectly capable of supporting illustrations.Stripping out all graphics is the lazy way to convert a book to an ebook.I feel gypped out of some of the content when images are unceremoniously axed.


Right now, it seems many publishers just hit "save as ebook" without any sort of proofing process or pride in workmanship.It's shameful.What is needed is publishers who CARE about ebooks as a format, not just as a quick revenue stream.

Read his blog then decide
I bought Just a Geek, Dancing Barefoot and Sunken Treasure and although they are fun reading I regret spending so much money for things he wrote in his blog. If you are a "real" Wil Wheaton fan then you must buy his books but if you just like the guy or you're curious about his life now then reading his blog will suffice.
Hopefully his bad opinion of W Shatner is just a joke otherwise Wheaton has a chip on his shoulder. Sour grapes much? Wil Wheaton could never equal Shatner's TV and film career if he worked until he was 90. That said I like to watch Wheaton's acting and will watch the programs he has recently filmed.

Touching and insightful
I truly enjoyed Wil Wheaton's unwavering look at his life post Star Trek The Next Generation and how he eventually relearns to love trek and himself.There were many parts of the book that I found myself touched and close to heartbreak when Mr. Wheaton goes back and rereads parts of his blog only to realizes just how insecure he was.

A story about growth and accepting who you are and your past.My only critique is that there are large sections of the book are taken directly from his blog.I wish all the material was new; however, then you may not have had the insightful feel of the novel.Either way, a great read and definitely recommended. ... Wil Wheaton's //The Happiest Days of Our Lives // is a collection of personal narratives which first appeared online. Reading them gives that informal, friendly feel of a blog post. The stories center on Wheaton's life from childhood to a thirty-something father and husband; they are informative yet entertaining, brief yet rich. Wheaton picks up where he left in //Just a Geek//, and shares his experiences as child, a geek and a father. The stories celebrate life, covering geek mania. In "What a Long Strange Trip it's Been," Wheaton talks about his family; in "Butterfly Tree" he remembers an embarrassment during a Back to School night when he was only six, and in "Beyond the Rim of the Starlight," he reminisces about a Star Trek convention, a moment to savor, which affirmed his geek mania. Wow..just wow
I'm not big on writing long reviews. I like to keep it short and simple.

Just finished this small book. Wil has a great way of giving his emotions to the reader. So you feel what he is feeling. I love how well written these short and true stories are. Well done Wil!

This is a collection of true short stories of Wil Wheaton's life. The one that I remembered the most was when his grandmother died. Packing up her stuff before they sold her house. It also has other little cute stories about his life.

Five well-written stories about the life of Wil Wheaton
Wil Wheaton is the actor that played the character of Wesley Crusher on the extremely popular "Star Trek: The Next Generation" television show. His was a character that made him a teen idol to some and an object of derision to others. Like many of the other regular characters on a Star Trek series, Wheaton has mixed feelings about his success.
On the one hand, the show made him wealthy and famous, so he has the opportunity to bask in the glow of success. However, the body of Star Trek fandom is a diverse one, ranging from polite adoration to mental instability. Wheaton is a regular on the Star Trek convention circuit, so he was forced to deal with the entire spectrum of personalities.
This book is a collection of five short stories about Wheaton's experiences in life, some in the Star Trek universe, others describing his childhood and the loss of a beloved aunt. His writing is quite good; he puts down his emotions in an understated yet moving way. The stories give you an insight into his life, his experiences while making Star Trek and his world after leaving the making of the Star Trek universe. This is not a biography or a "tell-all" book about Star Trek; it is a simple collection of stories about the life of Wil Wheaton.

Dancing Barefoot or Why Wil Wheaton ROCKS
This book is great. Any fan of Wil's should check it out. Anyone who hates Wil should check it out to find out why Wil Wheaton ROCKS.

This was a great book.Its a few short stories of Wil's experiences.It really lets you know how he feels about critical moments in his life.After reading this book and went out and got his other one, Just a Geek.

You'll laugh and learn a little, too
In 2006 Wil Wheaton was hired to write humorous reviews of Star Trek: The Next Generation for TVSquad. Unfortunately the gig fell through before all the reviews for the first season were published. What's a guy to do? Publish them as a book, of course!

Wheaton brings his own perspective as a cast member and fan of ST:TNG to bear on the episodes, as well as his unique voice as a writer. The result a humorous look back at the rocky beginnings of the show. (The book covers the first half of the first season; since this is marked as "Volume 1," we can assume that future books will cover more episodes.) Each episode gets a synopsis, a piece of notable dialog, some fun technobabble, a behind-the-scenes memory and an overall grade.

Wheaton doesn't pull any punches on either the poor production (writers and directors are particularly in his sights) or his own portrayal of young Wesley Crusher, and his behind-the-scenes memories say a lot about the pressure those involved in show were under to live up to the Original Series. As Wheaton points out, however, his criticism is tempered with great affection, and he is quick to point out the glimpses of brilliance that would come to fruition two seasons later.

One note: this book is definitely NSFW due to language and "adult situations." That aside, it's a fun look back at the early days of what became the greatest sci-fi show of the 90s. I can't recommend it enough to any fan of ST:TNG.

Boldly (and Lovingly) Going Where No One Has Snarked Before!
Do you like revisiting TV series you loved? Do you like behind the scenes stories? Do you like your nostalgia mixed with a healthy dose of snarcasm (snark + sarcasm)? Well, then you're in luck! Wil Wheaton (famous, and oft-hated, for portraying Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation") has accepted the task of re-watching the old episodes and writing them up, complete with personal behind the scenes memories. Better than expected!
I mostly got this because of the Wil Wheaton story, "Cura te Ipsum."

While I found that satisfyingly good, I was surprised at how good the rest of the stories were, and how nicely the familiar characters and environments were translated to Manga form! A nice surprise and a good read.

Not as good as Vol 1
This "Manga style" illustrated novel has several short stories or episodes centering around The Original Star Trek TV series. Each short story is written and illustrated by a different writer and artist.Because of this, each story has it's own unique style.

I think this concept is very interesting and has the potential to keep this series fresh and creative.The dialog in these books are pretty true to the Original Series and the artwork is very good too.

The stories in Volume 2 of this series didn't seem to be as good as the stories in the first volume. I was definitely left with a feeling that something was missing. And some of the illustrations of the characters didn't seem as recognizable.Also, the stories weren't very creative and some referred too much to previous TV episodes. I think this only makes hard core fans bored and new fans confused. Some of the stories seemed too similar to other plots already told within the Star Trek universe. The whole point of Star Trek was to boldly go where no one (or story) has gone before... not to rehash or revisit the past. Not all the stories are bad and for the most part, the dialog and art is very good... but I hope volume 3 will have better stories to tell.

First of many...? Please?
I've read all the Fables graphic novels, loved them. But, this something of a special treat.
First, it's just a good book all by itself. I'm a slow reader and this is the fastest read I've ever experienced.
Second, I really cared about these characters, and I find myself wanting to know more about supporting characters.
I really hope there will be another book featuring the witch of the Black Forest.
Third, it's a compelling commentary on the loss of innocence.
I found myself horrified at Max's downfall and Peter's desperation, and at the same time I was unable to stop reading at breakneck speed.

Fabulous
This is a story about two brothers, one bad, one good. It's also a story about how the Fables came to live in our world. It's also a love story.

Back before the Goblin armies took over the universe, subverting the inhabited worlds to their will, Peter Piper and his older brother Max loved each other the way brothers should. Peter was ten, Max was fourteen. Peter was smitten by a girl named Bo Peep and wanted nothing more than to go on traveling with his musical family. He, his father and brother Max played the flute. But Peter was by far the best flute player and one day his father gave Peter his magic flute called Frost, by passing Max, the first born.

This flute had been handed from father to son for generations and Max thought it should be his. Already turning toward the dark side, this pushed him over. Turning him into a killer. He killed his father, Bo's sisters and was certainly responsible for his mother's death. And he wants more than anything to kill Peter, who he's battled with and lost.

Peter now lives among his kind on Earth, the planet of sanctuary, safe from Max, with his invalid wife Bo. But Max has found them and he's coming.

I knew I wasn't going to like this book as soon as I read the first few paragraphs. How wrong first impressions can sometimes be. I sat glued to my chair on Halloween Eve reading the night away as others went to costume parties and I couldn't have been more happy about it. As silly as the premise of this story sounded, I was drawn into the book's world and before I knew, I believed. This book is simply fabulous.

Would be better in book form, but excellent nonetheless
If you love Fables (the graphic series), you will love this. I wondered how they were going to translate graphic novels into a CD set but this came out pretty well. I am a die hard lover of all things fairy tales so when I read about this I knew I had to have it. As I said, I think I would have rather had the book version but this is a fine substitute. Highly recommend if you love Bill Willingham.

AWESOME!!! 10 stars out of 5!
This is one of the best novels I have read in the last 10 years.I am particularly fond of detailed character development and this author had superbly detailed character development.The plot wove a detailed tapestry that spanned several centuries, gently dipping back and forth over the years to engross me and develop and draw together the storylines.

I'm usually not a fan of short staccato endings.This ending, though short compared with the rest of the book's pacing, balanced the story perfectly and was very satisfying.After having read the whole story, I cannot imagine the story ending in any other way.

I didn't have high expectations for narrator Will Wheaton, but was pleasantly surprised.He performed admirably, with a variety of very distinct character voices for the different characters.All of his voice characterizations are spot on - none goofy or abrupt so as to break you out of the story.

My only complaint in this whole audio book is in the audio mastering.The beginning and ends of many sentences were clipped or the audio level dipped too low making the story difficult to understand at times.I often had to rewind to re-listen and try to figure out what the missing bits of sentences were.

A Different Journey
Follow along with two brothers, whose sibling rivalry could last till the end of time. If you have read other FABLES you might be a little bored with the first chapter, it nearly turned me away, but the rest of the book doesn't disappoint. Set in the present day, find yourself reconnecting with tales you think you know.
The author, Bill Willingham, puts just enough in to keep the story fresh and yet strangely familiar. Steve Leialoha also produced fantastic ink drawings for this novel. The book felt like a mix of the FABLES graphic novels and books like "The Name of the Wind". The only thing I wish this book had was the actual music fabled to be full of magic.

war of the worlds CD
I am a trekkie from way back and the cast of Star Trek does the voices on this H.G Wells classic.I love it!I would recommend it to anyone who likes books on CD.

HG Wells by Star Trek Stars
This is a wonderful unique piece of theater performed by accomplished television stars from Star Trek. It is not around a lot but if you get a chance to hear this, you can enjoy the fine work of HG Wells' classic sci- fi story and the talents of the skilled voices of the Trek crew. A keeper for Trekkies and theater buffs.

in this cassette there is a fantastic interpretation of the war of the worlds, although you can't see anything, the actors are so good that you feel yourself in another strange world...

Glad to buy it once again...
A few years ago I purchased the cassette tape version of this play and enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately, I lost my copy and have wanted to listen to this play many times since then. I'm glad I purchased this item again and look forward to hearing it again.

Great one hour summary with special sound effects ...
After purchasing this audio novel I was initially upset because it was only an hour long. I much prefer my audio novels to be at least 2 hours long.With a foul mode in place I began to listen to the tape.In a few short minutes I was quickly swept up into the story, recogizing my favorite Star Trek actors as they played their parts.The audio novel although short has an excellant production quality. The story is concise and easy to follow.I would like to thank John DeLancie for directing this project and for the participaction of the other actors. I would not hesitate to recommend this audio novel and look forward to others from John DeLancy, Lenard Nimoy and the rest of the Star Trek gang. (The RAMA science fiction series would be great.) My Thoughts on Tom Sawyer
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is about Tom sawyer and his best friend, Huckleberry Finn's adventures. The setting in this book takes place in various places including caves, school, church, and the graveyard. The time period is in the early 1800's. The protagonists are tom sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Injun Joe and Muff are the antagonists. The major plot of this book was that he saw Injun Joe kill the doctor while they were grave robbing. The rising action of this book was when they went into the mansion, and go to the graveyard. The climax to me was when they witness the murder,go through the cave, and they find Joe.

The style of this book was full of adventure and a lot of exciting moments. The point of view was in 3rd Person. The painting of the fence was one of my favorite parts of this book. The theme of this book to me is to see what the perspective on school, feelings, imagination, adventure, and life in the eyes of a young teen. I thought this book was pretty likable and would rate it 3 stars. Me being a fan of science fiction this was somewhat boring. I really like the whole fairytale idea. This book is definitely worth reading though.

Tom Sawyer Hear It Read IT
My son loved the story and especially enjoys reading along with the CD.I like the CD component as it increases reading speed over time.We try to puchase as many read alongs as possible as we are often on the road. Our family enjoys good literature and it is a great way to introduce children to classics prior to high school where they will be reading unabridged versions of these stories on their own!

Funny and enjoyable
Mark Twain sure knows how to write funny stories - and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is filled with them.My main criticism with the book is that there is no cohesive story.Instead there are several stories that are not connected to each other at all.The non-connected stories are funny, but there is no relation between them.It isn't until the book reaches the end where Twain begins to craft a cohesive storyline.It's definitely filled with some hilarious moments and great characters (Tom, Aunt Polly, and Huck), but as a whole I wouldn't classify this as a classic work of literature.For that you would have to read Twain's masterpiece "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

Collector's Library Huck Finn
Look Inside for Collector's Library Adventures of Huckleberry Finn promised an illustrated book. We have a case of a misleading Look Inside: in reality no illustrations; very small format; awful choice of typeface. My impression that Look Inside was made from a different edition.
Another thing: it's a little strange when Amazon customers review Mark Twain. Mark Twain does not need it. What is needed are reviews of different editions (quality, illustrations, scholarly or nor, paper, cover and typeface. So one star is, of course not for Huck Finn (100 stars for that boy), but for the awful edition. and misleading Look Inside.
Finally, let me repeat it again: the more I read reviews on Huck Finn, the more I am convinced, they have to be separated by editions. If I am looking for a scholarly edition with illustration and a decent cover and typeface, how, in a world, can it be helpful, if someone writes: "Mark Twain is not for me." Serious readers will seek opinions on classics from other sources, for example, from Hemingway who said, that the whole American literature had come out of Huck Finn. OK, if Amazon thinks that "Mark Twain is not for me" phrase is protected by First Amendment, and any football and beer lover has a right to put it here as an opinion, I agree. In this case, still, I think these ones have to be separated from opinions of serious book readers and collectors who are interested in differences of certain editions of classics.

What a strange time.
I have not read all of it yet, because the man I am tutoring in reading has the book...

BADLY published edition of a GREAT NOVEL
We all know "Huckleberry Finn" is a 5-star novel. My complaint is about this particular edition of the book. The type is horizontally compressed to the extreme and the layout on the some of the pages was canted. Mark Twain and his readers deserve better treatment!

Disappointed
I really wanted to love this book but it was just o.k.Mark Twain is such a talented writer but this book just wasn't for me.

Printing Problems
Beware this edition - at least until the printing problems are resolved. I bought two copies and each copy duplicated pages 85-116 and did not include pages 117-148. Amazon has not yet provided replacements so I wonder if all its print run of this edition is affected in the same way. ... Read more
