Simple home cooking, delicious results
I stumbled upon a piece in HOUSE BEAUTIFUL referring to this wonderful book. I enjoy my food, whether it is haute cuisine, or biscuits and gravy. Because I was moving to Scotland, I wanted to pick up an American cookbook that I could bring with me, something to remind me of home, that did not require too much work, would impress my British friends (lol), and satisfy my husband's (and mine) voracious appetite for comfort food. This was a pure Godsend.

Firstly, I am frugal to a fault. We are not rich, and cannot spend ample amounts of money on expensive ingredients..but we still like to eat well. I found that the recipes were very very easy to follow, and the ingredients easy to find, even in Britain. The recipes for (key) lime pie and peanut butter pie were absolutely delicious. In fact, I have gone through the entire cookbook, and cooked each recipe..and I have to say, I was not disappointed. Ham, cheese, peaches, simple crepes, sausage gravy..all were so good! Brunch at our house is now a favorite meal due to her fantastic recipe for quiche.

I often am jaded with cookbooks, find myself frustrated and flustered, just wanting to cook something that is relatively simple, doesn't break the bank, looks good, and tastes even better. I really REALLY am happy to have bought this book. She did a really lovely job, and my husband is happier for it!

This was the only cookbook I brought with me to the U.K., and I'm glad I did. It has been a source of joy for our tastebuds. I hope you give it a shot!

I purchased 3 copies of Dollars to Donuts.I have two daughters and they are always looking for new receipes to try.One daughter is in a Dinner Exchange Club and there are some receipes that will help her think of new ideas to share with her friends.Good Buy!

A Solution For Those Who Hate To Cook
I hate to cook. Sometimes when in the height of one's antipathy for a hated task, a God-send comes along. This, ladies and gentleman, was how I felt when I received the cookbook, dollars to donuts, Comfort Food and Kitchen Wisdom From Route 66's Landmark Rock Café by Dawn Welch.

At first, I admit, I was a bit skeptical. The term "comfort food" from the subtitle made me a bit nervous. Is "comfort food" akin to "difficult and complicated?" The book sat on my kitchen counter for a couple weeks. Once in a while I would leaf through the glossy pages. There are little yellow tabs on each recipe that tells you how many will be fed by each recipe, the ease with which the dish could be made, what the price will be, and if you can freeze it. I was intrigued, but still wary. My anti-cooking sentiments were strong.

The attraction of the bright, red colored book was strong, too, though. I continued to glance through it whenever I walked by. I noticed that there were new pages mysteriously ear-marked. Were there ghosts in my kitchen? It seemed unlikely. My kids had started to look through the cookbook and choose their favorite recipes. Could my family actually have an opinion on what I make for dinner?

With this new motivation, I decided to bite the bullet and make something. Page 8 boasts "Cheesy Baked Chicken Enchiladas." The recipe sounded easy enough - not too many complicated ingredients, no special gyrations with the tortillas, no fancy pans required. I decided to make it. Surprise. A Triumph! Even bigger surprise, my family ate it. All of it!

Since then, I've tried a few more recipes from the book. The "Chef's Pasta Salad" was delicious and great for school lunches the next day. The French Onion Soup was divine. There are some recipes that require a bit more attention to detail, I won't lie to you. For example, I was a complete failure at the three-cheese white lasagna because I didn't make the homemade cheese sauce properly.

My advice is to go with the author's suggestion and buy a jarred Alfredo, which is another reason I like this cookbook, the author gives you many options and suggestions. If you don't have this meat, try that meat. If you don't want to make a special sauce, try this sauce. In addition, the book is full of tried and true tips the author has learned from her years as owner of the Rock Café- pretty solid credentials. Tomorrow I think I'll try Chicken Fried Steak & Bacon Gravy. Wish me luck.

Wondeful Cookbook!
I bought this cookbook in December and have made a few of the recipes in it. They have always turned out great and the recipes are quite easy to follow. I highly recommend it!
