Richey (born 3 August 1964 in Zeist, the Netherlands) is a UK-US dual citizen, born to a Scottish mother and American father, who was raised in Scotland but moved to Ohio, United States to join his father in late 1982. He was on death row for 21 years in Ohio after being convicted in 1987 of murdering two year-old Cynthia Collins by arson in 1986. In December 2007 he accepted a plea bargain which led to his release from death row and return to Scotland on 9 January 2008. Richey's plea bargain involved pleading 'no contest' to manslaughter, child endangering and breaking and entering. He was sentenced to time served, with the murder and arson charges dropped. A 'no contest' plea is not an admission of guilt. The accused by entering a no contest plea is not disputing, but not admitting, the charges. In real terms, this means that the accused is admitting that there is enough evidence to convict, without admitting to any guilt. Richey was due to be re-tried in March 2008 following a ruling in August 2007 of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit that overturned Richey's conviction following the prosecution's appeal of that ruling to the United States Supreme Court on a legal technicality concerning the common law theory of transferred intent. The ruling held that Richey's defense counsel at the original trial had been ineffective, and ordered that Richey be re-tried within 90 days or released. Two weeks later, the Ohio Attorney General's office announced that the prosecution would be seeking a retrial. Richey was taken off death row and return...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1457787 ... Excerpt:Senior club appearances and goalscounted for the domestic league only.* Appearances (Goals) Liam Watson (born 21 October 1970) is an English former professional footballer and currently manager of Conference National side Southport. Having plied his trade at Maghull and Burscough, Watson finally made his mark at Warrington Town where John Beck signed him for Preston North End for a fee of £60,000. This smashed Warrington Town's transfer fee received record which had only been set a few weeks earlier when Neil Whalley also moved to Deepdale for just £25,000. He scored in his debut after replacing the injured Micky Norbury in a 5-2 win over Rotherham United on the 27th March 1993 and then netted again in his next two appearances against Port Vale and Huddersfield Town. They would turn out to be the only three goals he would score for Preston but went on to make six more appearances before a serious injury cut short his professional footballing career. Due to his injury Watson retired from professional football and returned to non-league. The first side to sign him on his return was Marine before moving on to Witton Albion and then eventually Runcorn...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22155136 ... Read more

Product Description
It is 1890. One woman rules the British Empire; virtually all other women rule domains no larger than their own kitchens. The widow of Constable Tobias Hudson has other ideas and has made other plans. She has organized the first of its kind consulting detective agency, combining her own unique powers of observation and vast knowledge of criminal investigation with the careful selection of an essential male figurehead. Sherlock Holmes possesses the language and bearing of a gentleman, as well as a haughty self-confidence that clients find reassuring. He brings with him the level-headed Dr. Watson, an addition Mrs. Hudson finds reassuring. Together they will investigate the death of Sir Stanley Parkerton who met his fate after a family dinner in which he had the same food and drink as the assembled guests. When the Parkertons' coachman, who drinks too much and knows too much, is murdered as well, the game is truly afoot. To solve the mystery, Mrs. Hudson and her colleagues must not only sort through the intrigues of both staff and family, they must also contend with the danger posed by the unexpected arrival of the White Rajah of Sarawak and the sudden intrusion of headhunters into the English countryside. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting mystery of Victorian England
Some women will shun the label of housewife. "The Unpleasantness at Parketon Manor" tells the story of the widow of a constable, who takes up the law into her own hands by creating a private consulting detective agency. Mrs. Hudson uses the famed Sherlock Holmes as a figurehead and front for her operations, and she embraces the sleuth lifestyle and finds a murder among her first cases. An exciting mystery of Victorian England, "The Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manor" is a read that shouldn't be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars most enjoyable!
"The Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manner" a first novel by Barry Brown, describes further "truths" about the work of Sherlock Holmes at Scotland Yard, while depicting Victorian era mores filtered through current attitudes. In precise prose, Brown creates a suspenseful atmosphere, gradually introducing characters, events and cues as the mystery unfolds and is resolved. Though aficionados of the original series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may demur, it seems according to Brown, that Mrs. Hudson was the true "brains of the outfit," with Holmes merely an attractive, somewhat pompous, and occasionally heroic front man. Dr. John Watson remains steadfast, objective and reliable. How could Watson be any different?

The characters of Holmes and Hudson are well developed and offer a dynamic contrast as the brains and face of the detective agency. Contained within the central narrative, Brown provides observations and asides concerning human behavior, frailties and mannerisms that are perceptive, always amusing and often quite funny. The author achieves another level of contemporary resonance in capturing the past partnership between Mrs. Hudson and her deceased husband and her behind-the-scenes expertise and leadership of the detective agency. In a final touching scene, she visits her husband's grave and shares the events and experience of the tale, as if she is talking to him at night by the kitchen table.

A movie about the Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manner would have to star Angela Lansbury and Cary Grant. Although that cannot happen, the reader can eagerly anticipate additional novels in this series from the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Anyone the least bit familiar with Sherlock Holmes, now has a new must read--The Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manor, first in the Mrs. Hudson of Baker Street Series. It's a fascinating and intriguing storyline, with creative, colorful characters that help intensify the quirks in Holmes and the bedrock of the good Dr. Watson.Mrs. Hudson, truly the pillar to the consulting detective duo of Holmes and Watson, only has her memories and late husband Tobias, buried at St. Marleybone, to support her. My favorite chapter includes a charming soliloquy by Mrs. Hudson at her husband's grave which provides additional insight into the woman and the spirit driving Watson and Holmes, as well as comfort for the real leader behind the detective agency.I'm eagerly awaiting the next in the series!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful twist on Sherlock Holmes
The Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manor is a terrific, entertaining read--and a delightful twist on the Sherlock Holmes stories we know and love. Mrs. Hudson is an unforgettable character; it is great fun to watch this cockney-speaking landlady put her employees Holmes and Watson though their paces...and remain, always, several steps ahead of them. Places, events, characters, and times are beautifully and cleverly rendered.I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out! ... Read more

Product Description
A visual and intellectual tour de force, this stimulating, copiously illustrated book traces the parallels among painting, sculpture, and architecture through a broad selection of works and sites, both historical and contemporary. The author, an eminent architect, explores the common threads found in a variety of visual experiences. He begins by examining basic design principles as they are revealed in works of art, then relates those principles to a wide range of projects in both the built and unbuilt environment. Drawing his examples from many schools of art and architecture, he reveals his passion for particular works that have influenced his and others' architectural styles, citing world-famous paintings by Magritte and Czanne, traditional Japanese woodblock prints, farm structures of the American Midwest, and other powerful influences from diverse design arenas that impact on contemporary architecture.Amazon.com Review
Squares, circles, columns, pyramids, grids, and the like are the vitalconstants of any kind of visual representation, appearing not onlyacross eras and cultures but across such media as "fine" art and its more"applied" cousin, architecture.Californian Barry Berkus, a big-timearchitect as well as a major collector of modern art, is fascinated byhow such elemental shapes and forms reflect each other in art andarchitecture, and in this beguilingly curated volume, a sort of personal scrapbook ofthe highest order, he explores just that. How?Largely by pairingsumptuous full-color photographs of his own architectural projects--the majorityof which are lavish, fanciful, geometrically daring residences in theAmerican Southwest--with some of the great pieces of modern and contemporaryart, plus some shots of such lovely antiquities as Italian hillside villagesandthe whitewashed alleys of Mykonos. It's all in the interest of showingushow said elemental forms echo across time, regions, and craft; to thoseends, we have the "female" curves of a charmingly sunny-hued OB-GYNofficeBerkus designed in Santa Barbara across from the abstracted curves ofthewoman in Picasso's 1932 Reading, or the archways of a gardencourtarcade he designed in 1989 for Villa Lucia, a private residence inMontecito, flush up against archways from the Roman ruins, or the oneoverthe doorway in the gorgeously crumbling front façade of an old home inTorgiano, Italy.

Berkus's annotations are unremarkable--many of the ideas are general andoverfamiliar, and it often reads somewhat like Rem Koolhaas without thewacked-out, idiot-savant lyricism. But no matter, as the realtreasures of this book are the photos of Berkus's architecture itself. It's notwithout its common themes across projects--namely, a fondness for massing atoybox's worth of warmly colored basic shapes into improbably elegant, sprawling clusters--but it nonetheless dazzles in its diversity, andBerkus seems as comfortable and innovative designing in full-boregeometric-postmodern as he does in neo-Italianate villa or pueblomodular. Pair his own satisfying designs with his cosmopolitan appreciation ofeveryone and everything from Corbu, Calder, and the Case Study Homes toZentemples, the agorae of ancient Greece, and the coolly ironic work ofcontemporary artists like Ed Ruscha and Ann Hamilton, and you have apalette that's at the very least a pleasant spree. At its best, though,it's a literate and often poignant study of those elements of thevisualworld we just can't stop coming back to. --Timothy Murphy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the architects library
This collection of works offers a unique view into the inspiration that fueled the creative energy of one of the most influential architects of this century. The title is true to its name. The usage of parallel imagery is found throughout the book and catalyzes the reader to look closer at the world around them recognizing and combining complementary forms to create magnificent modern structures.A must read for architects, aspiring and practiced, who are looking to develop or uncover new perspectives in there work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for the Creative Process
Anyone involved in creative endeavors, regardless of background or profession, or those who merely appreciate the fruits of creativity, will gain valuable insight from this book.

Berkus, an architect, traces the inspiration for his designs from his vast experience of places, objects, and works of art.Berkus' built forms are juxtaposed with the work of renowned artists. Each page is visually compelling and as much an education about art as it is about architecture.

I particularly appreciated Berkus' down-to-earth approach to writing - no technical jargon or "experts" language here. Berkus' concepts are far-reaching and visionary - this is seen strongly in the final section of the book "Building for the Future."

Assuredly, this book will capture your imagination and influence your way of seeing the world around you. I would highly recommend Architecture/Art/Parallels/Connections as a great gift for all the creative people in your life! ... Read more

Excerpt: David Ross Lonsberry (born February 7, 1947 in Watson, Saskatchewan) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. He had his best seasons in a Flyers uniform and was a member of Philadelphia's back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams in the mid-1970s. Signed with the Boston Bruins organization as a teenager, Lonsberry enjoyed an outstanding junior career with the Estevan Bruins junior club of the SJHL, winning the scoring championship his final season with 144 points in only 60 games, and following with 23 goals in 25 playoff games en route to the Memorial Cup semifinals. Starting in 1966, Lonsberry had a three-year professional apprenticeship with the Bruins' Oklahoma City Blazers Central Hockey League farm team, while spending some time with the NHL club in each of the three seasons. Coveted by the Los Angeles Kings, they traded for him in 1970 for two first round draft picks, and he became a steady two-way performer for Los Angeles, scoring twenty or more goals each of his two full seasons with the Kings and being named to play in the NHL All-Star Game in 1972. Shortly thereafter, however, he was traded in a seven-player deal that was at the time the largest in league history to the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he would meet with the most success. Playing on a line with Rick MacLeish and Gary Dornhoefer, his hard-nosed two-way style fit in perfectly with the "Broad Street Bullies," scori...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10290287 ... Read more
