Graphics / Black & White fans MUST BUY
Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. On Point
Paul Walker has compiled a book of information on pet photography that should be "The" number one book for anyone who wants to seriously get into the pet photography business. As a professional photographer who has been shooting event and corporate photography for the past decade and who is now looking to expand into the field of high end pet photography, I found this book and the associated images to be exactly what I was looking for. The book helped me adapt to a creative shooting style that has quickly become valuable. Many thanks to Paul Walker for sharing his skills.

Superb book, inspirational read
What an inspirational and refreshing read.The author and photographer Paul Walker gives his methodology and mindset on how he prepares and conducts his own pet photography shoots.There is invaluable detail on other areas too on items that can easily be overlooked such as preparing for a shoot.There are too many photography books in the main that list endless f-stops and shutter speeds and focal lengths and try to encourage other photographers to use similar recipes resulting in all too familiar clones of images or poor attempts.This book is aimed more at creating different images that are unique and I totally concur with this approach.I have reviewed the imagery on the author's website too and it's in a league of its own. With an understanding of a camera you need such a book on creating imagery rather than how to use a camera and in this regard the book is exceptional and different.

Light on Content
I ordered this book with anticipation. The reviews were mostly favorable and Paul's work recommended. However, the book falls short in several areas.

Pet Photography Now! is heavy on anecdotes and light on usable content. The text focuses mostly on a common sense approach that most photographers would practice regardless of skill level. For example, how many times must the reader be told not to wear nice clothing to an outdoor photo shoot? Some crucial subjects such as lighting are addressed but only in a cursory manner. The section on photo editing is woefully insufficient and makes one wonder why it was even included at all. Additionally, for a book with only 115 pages of actual content, much of it is pictures with captions that often do not highlight technique.

If you are looking for a 50 page short story stretched to produce a book, this is for you. However, those of you expecting a reference book with a wealth of information will be disappointed. After reading this light book cover to cover I have little reason to open it again.

Excellent Professional Resource
As a professional equine photographer I am asked frequently to photograph companion animals.I purchased this book because I know horses but not dog/cat imaging. Paul takes a very methodical approach to explaining cameras, lenses, lighting, preparing for the shoot, dealing with less than ideal owners and pets. Paul explains why it is so important to know not only your camera but also the owners expectations, disposition and training level of the animal, location and safety. I would have to rate this as the best dog photography technique book there is on the market. Paul's work shows why he is one of the top photographers there. I found his websites [...] and [...]These sites will show that Paul should start on his next book of obtaining perfect wedding and portrait images. If Paul returns to the US for an animal portrait seminar I will be one of the first to sign up.

Comics at their best
The newspaper comic strip has been around for a little over a century and the earliest comic books are around eighty years old themselves.That's a reasonably long time, and there have been a lot of people who've worked in the field.Many have been pretty mediocre, a small group have been good, and there are an elite few who've been truly great.Although you may not agree with the complete list (I don't), Masters of American Comics does a pretty good job selecting the artists who belong in this elite group.

This coffee table book is divided into two parts.In the first section, we get a history of the comics in general, with a particular focus on the contributions of the elite artists.The second section is a collection of essays by various writers both inside and outside the comic industry; each essay deals with one of the fifteen featured artists.

Who are these artists (who also often wrote their material)?The first (both chronologically and within the book) is Windsor McCay whose Little Nemo in Slumberland remains one of the most wildly imaginative comic strips ever.McCay, incidentally, was also one of the very earliest animators.Lyonel Feininger's career was pretty brief, but his Kinder-Kids strips offer some more mind-bending art.George Herriman was the creator of arguably the greatest comic strip ever, Krazy Kat.E.C. Segar brought Popeye to the world in a comic strip that was far more clever than any of the cartoons.

Frank King's Gasoline Alley dealt with more of the mundane aspects of life, but did so brilliantly; it is the longest active comic, though King's successors have made it a pale shadow of its former self.Chester Gould's Dick Tracy brought hard-boiled crime to the comics, and Milton Caniff raised adventure to a new level with Terry and the Pirates (and later Steve Canyon).

More modern artists include Charles Schulz, whose Peanuts is probably the most popular strip ever.Will Eisner brought a new respectability to the medium with The Spirit.Jack Kirby, the first real comic book artist in the bunch, is well-worth mention for his part in creating most of the great Marvel superheroes (and a few DC characters too).Harvey Kurtzmann does not have a single famous character, but his role in the EC comics of the 1950s and the early Mad Magazine was considerable.

R. Crumb was a major figure in the early underground comics movement.Art Spiegelman, Gary Panter and Chris Ware are all still active and further extending the boundaries of what comics can be.Spiegelman would also win a Pulitzer for his Holocaust epic, Maus, demonstrating that the medium was more than just kids' fare.

There is a heap of art in Masters of American comics, much of it in color, making this quite a treat, and an excellent companion piece to the museum exhibition which inspired it.It also shows that quality and popularity are two almost separate fields:the big strips of today - Garfield, Dennis the Menace, Cathy, Marmaduke, et al - are not even mentioned.Yes, you might not like every artist selected (for example, I cannot find much to like about Panter, whose distinct art must be an acquired taste) and you might think of others worthy of inclusion (for example Steve Ditko, Alex Raymond or Bill Watterson).Nevertheless, this book is a gem which not only provides a history of the comics, but is a great pleasure to read.

Not what it could have been
MASTERS OF AMERICAN COMICS strives to be an overview of this interesting group of artists, but suffers from the fatal flaw of examining comic strips and comic books in the same work. These two very different types of storytelling don't really belong together and it gives the book a split personality. While beautifully illustrated and well-researched, this would have proven to be more valuable had it focused on one genre or the other. Despite my affection for both of these men and their creations; Charles Schulz and Jack Kirby are just not natural companions in any book. Also missing were any number of comic strip artists. Al Capp, Noel Sickles, Walt Kelly, and Alex Raymond are all mentioned but are given the short end of the stick here. Their presence would have been preferable to Crumb or Panter's; not because these men are not talented, but rather it would have made this work more cohesive. I understand this is a companion book to a joint exhibition of Hammer Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art, but as such the exhibition suffered from the same flaw. If you are interested in the history of the comic strip in America this will be a nice sampler, but it obviously could have been much more.

Peanuts and Jimbo; an uneasy marriage.
I loved the idea of reproducing much of the art from the original work, with editor's notes, erasures, pencil lines all showing. However, the mixture of the work of hugely popular mass-market artists like Schultz and (in the underground, Crumb) with more recent avante-guarde artists like Panter seemed odd to me. Peanuts was a cultural phenomenon, but has anyone actually ever read "Jimbo". I didn't, even when I bought "Raw" years ago. I appreciate boomer artists raised on the pulps would want to do something more "high-brow", but for me, the very nature of the medium mitigates against the sophisticated existentialism of, say, Chris Ware. Sure, I guess that has it's place, but what makes comics great is how the artists develop ways of making it easier for anyone to read and understand, not harder.

As a Lender to the Exhibition this book covers in its voluminous pages, the actual chance to see the exhibitions in LA, Milwaukee and New Jersey Museums was only aided by this graceful tome. Four Stars ****!

For our "Little Monkey", Ben
I bought this book because it reminds me so much of my grandson, Ben, who has been lovingly referred to as "Little Monkey" since shortly after birth. He loves animals and is becoming very skilled at inventing excuses designed to delay bedtime. I thought it a perfect gift for his second birthday and am hoping it will help him settle in saying, "Good night, Me."

Doesn't live up to expectations...
This is a fine book if you want to teach mischief and disobedience.I really liked the first book we got from this author and illustrator If Animals Kissed Goodnight, so I went searching for another book.The illustrations are nice, very calming and soft, great for bedtime.But, the story is about a monkey who creates great havoc and gets snarled at by various circus folk.We still use it occasionally for our 18 month old, but I change the words which will work until he starts to read or recognize the displeased expressions on the characters' faces.

Despite the sky being dark and the moon being high, Little Monkey manages to avoid going to bed a little longer by saying goodnight to...everybody at the the circus where he lives.He does tricks to go from person to person and animal to animal, saying goodnight to them all and impressing the circus's audience.



While this would be a good bedtime story, a parent would have to be careful when sharing it.The illustrations remain light and active up until the last page.This story may serve to rile-up some children instead of calm them down.



The illustrations incorporate a great amount of physical humor among the characters and do a good job of creating a circus atmosphere and showing the members of a circus troupe.





Activities to do with the book:



Yet another good bedtime story.Of course, with some children who look for any possible reason to stay awake a few more minutes, Little Monkey's example may not be the best.



This is also a good story to share with young children going to the circus for the first time.A parent, sibling or teacher can point out ringmasters, clowns, strongmen, elephants, jugglers etc.

GREAT BOOK- IF YOU ARE A SCIENTIST
This book should be called "College majors in the environment".I am a college graduate with a social sciences degree, and the book was not of any help to me.It does not cover the job search, and gives only a few,obvious contacts (such as the EPA).Each chapter is written for a specificdegree, and what can be done with that degree, all of which are life orphysical sciences.Im sure the book is very helpful if you have a degreein biology, forestry, chemistry, meteorology, etc.But for those of uswith less scientifically specific degrees, this book is not too helpfulunless you are willing to go back to school for four more years afterreading it.

Pride of Puerto Rico: The Life of Roberto Clemente
I really enjoyed reading about Roberto Clemente's life. The book was very inspiring and I learned a lot more about Roberto Clemente reading this book made me feel much more pride in being Hispanic. It goes to show that everyone and anyone can accomplish what they want in life if you are committed to it. I like many others really admire Clemente because he didn't let the racist comments get to him or his lack of speaking English get between what was his most important goal in his life . . .his baseball career. I think that he showed that he was very committed to his baseball because he will play while being hurt or not, he wouldn't give up baseball for anything. In my opinion he deserved all of his awards and trophies, the respect he receives from many people and all of the young kids who look at his accomplishments and wish to be like him. If you ask me he is truly the pride of Puerto Rico.

I enjoyed this book so much.Coincidently I finished it just before seeing a ceremony in honor of Roberto Clemente with his widow Vera present at the 2006 MLB All-Star game.From reading this book I understand why the word "Pride" is always used when discussing Roberto Clemente.This book carres the theme of Roberto's pride from beginning to end.Pride not only in himself but in his family and country.Many may say this is not a book about baseball, but those who know the magic of baseball understand that you can't seperate the game from the players.It is the great person in the player that makes the game of baseball so wonderful.Roberto was a great baseball player and an even greater man. Puerto Rico should feel honored in having him as one of their native sons.

American Civil War
This item was sourced then cancelled and re-ordered.It took a while to arrive but to be fair I was kept informed and have no complaint even though it was a Christmas Present that I was able to give six weeks late.I bought it for a friend who is very interested in the American Civil War and he is very pleased with it.It arrived in good condition.

A Book That Needed to be Written
The book details the cavalry action between JEB Stuart (CSA) and Custer (USA) on the crucial day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Lee's plan was to have Stuart attack from the rear as Picket attacked from the front. Custer saw Stuart and attacked vastly superior numbers of cavalry bringing confusion and delay to the CSA cavalry so that they did not play the part the Lee envisioned. The CSA lost and the Union was preserved. A good read by anyone interested in "the rest of the story".

Custer Saves the Gettysburg Battle
The book was insightful.Nothing like the Custer Last Stand movie with Errol Flynn.In the book, Custer was brash and courageous and full of spirit BUT he always followed orders.He was not the maverick depicted by Errol Flynn.

There are too many "ifs" on who saved the Union at Gettysburg.Was Custer's role very significant? Was Lee's Pickett's charge a blunder or a masterpiece of strategy that suffered a few mishaps?Would the Union line have held if Pickett received timely reinforcements?Would the Union line have held if Jeb Stuart was able to defeat Custer and be able to attack the Union's rear?

We will never know the answer to this or other countless questions.We do know that the Union would rather not image the consequence had Custer not defeated Jeb Stuart's calvary.

The book was very enjoyable because it brought to light that part of the battle at Gettysburg that was largely unknown to mainstream America.

The cavalry battle that saved the Union
Purportedly an examination of the cavalry fighting on July 3rd, 1863.

Deeply problematic in its historical research -- quoting at length from reputable but old secondary sources and at even greater length from totally unknown secondary sources; making no apparent use of primary documents at all. This sort of 'research' may be responsible for the repetition in the text of many problematic anecdotes. Unorthodox in its use of punctuation and spelling -- Stuart's response to being called 'The Plumbed (sic.) Knight' not once but thrice can only be imagined, and various grammatical errors make their way even into quoted material. Limited at best in its evocation and analysis of the battle that is the book's subject. Strange in several of its assumptions -- that the Confederates who briefly broke through the Union line on Cemetery Ridge on July 3 spent "twenty minutes" just sort of looking around and waiting for reinforcements; that Ewell could have easily taken Culp's Hill on the 2nd; that 'Pickett's Charge' should have been followed immediately, over the same ground, by a shoulder-to-shoulder cavalry charge by Stuart's troopers. (After they trampled Pickett's men, their next move was to be...?)

Amazon needs to update its rating system to include minus stars for books like this. How this stinker ever got published is a mystery to me. Walker cobbles his narrative together from a handful of secondary sources (Bruce Catton, D. S. Freeman, Gregory Urwin), has apparently never heard of the "Official Records" or regimental histories or "Gettysburg Magazine", spends 11 pages in a confused and and mostly wrong retelling of his "subject", and sets up this chapter with 125 pages of an irrelevant (and often wrong) summary of Lee's command of the Army of Northern Virginia.He knows just about nothing of the Civil War and detracts, rather than adds to the literature of the conflict.As a retired Army officer and professional historian I symbolically throw my hands skywards in dispair. ... Very informative
Great book with lots of knowledge and information not only on the species but on their climates and environments and what is needed for a proper cichlid tank.
