It is no surprise that this book in a Red Clover Award nominee!
She helped Grandpa build a large wooden box, but when she asked him what it was for she had to wait.He got a ladder and put the box way up high in an old oak tree then he showed her some special things and talked to her about barn owls.He had seen one and this was hoping the barn owl would make it into a home.Perhaps there would even be babies!

He began to tell her all sorts of interesting facts about them and showed her a barn owl pellet.Inside there were some very odd things like fur and bones, but it was very interesting to learn new things.They kept a watch to see if the owl would climb into the box.They were going to have to be very patient because even though Grandpa knew there were owls nearby you could never tell what a wild animal will do.

Along with this lovely narrative, there is factual information about the barn owl on the opposite page such as"Under their feathers, owls are slim. Another Great Science Book
Nicola Davies is one of my favorite authors. "Surprising Sharks" and "One Tiny Turtle" are in constant circulation in my fourth grade classroom. Davies has a way of making challenging ideas engaging and approachable.

This book takes on what seems like an abstract and uninteresting topic--the issue of animal size. But Davies manages to make it relevant. Why can't giant spiders exist? Why can't humans be superheroes who can lift up buses? Davies explains why using a "Big Thing/Little Thing" rule, or BTLT, which she refers to again and again. Her writing style interested both of my sons. While the 10 year old enjoyed the concept, my 4 year old was drawn to the cartoon-style pictures. And, I must admit, I was very relieved to read that my fear of giant spiders is unfounded--they simply can't exist. Whew!

For writing teachers, this book will be a great mentor text. There are so many good things going on--an interesting beginning, strong voice, cartoons to illustrate key concepts, and a conclusion that ties everything together. In the reading classroom, I see this book as an expository text that will be irresistible to kids who like graphic novels. Don't miss this one!

Humorous cartoon illustrations and handy glossary make it a very user-friendly book
Written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Neal Layton, "Just the Right Size: Why Big Animals Are Big and Little Animals Are Little" is more than a witty, appealing children's bestiary with fascinating details about both tiny spiders and huge blue whales. It provides information and education about evolution and physics of zoology, plus a vital piece of data called the BTLT rule. Briefly stated, the Big Thing Little Thing Rule is: If you double the length of something, its surface area and cross section go up four times, while its volume and weight go up eight times! What this means in terms of living creatures is that some (humongous) monsters actually can't evolve or exist. This is because clearly while Big Things are going to need lots more (approximately 8 times as mich) air, water, food, space, etc. than Little Things, they are actually only 4 times stronger than the Little Things that they are 8 times bigger than! Fantastic story!
I just read this book with my newly turned 5 yr. old little girl. I had to come right online to write a positive review because we enjoyed it so much! It was very realistic from the cats perspective on how life changes once an infant enters their world. At the end of the story we were so enthralled that we let out excited sounds and hugged each other! Precious story! Sweet art. Loved it!

Educational & Entertaining Book
After visiting Holland in March, I bought this children's book for my grandson.It is a great read aloud for now and as he grows a good book to read on his own. Not only is it a very good story, it educates children about the Netherlands and their constant stuggle with keeping the sea away from the land areas where the Dutch live.It also incorporates an animal (which children love) as a companion and hero.At the back of the book it explains the Kinderdijk Windmills and I was able to write about my visit there so he will be able to read about my story when he's a bit oder.

Delightful story about a cat and her human family
This is a delightful story based upon real events of a cat and a baby that survive a flood in the Netherlands.The cat starts out leading the carefree single life, but changes in the human family at home forces a change in lifestyle as the cat moves from sleeping in a warm bed to sleeping in the windmill.During particularly stormy weather, a dike holding back sea water breaks and the whole town is flooded.The cat saves the life of the family's new baby, and later acquires the baby's cradle for a bed after the child grows older.The story is enjoyable for even mature readers.

Katje, the Windmill Cat
This story enchanted my children several years ago when we got it from the library.The fact that it's based on a true story made it even more interesting.The pictures give you an idea of pre-industrial Holland, and of course cat lovers like the personality of the cat and her heroic deed!I have tried to order it for a couple years and it was unavailable for one reason or another, so we are very happy to finally own the book.

Great edition
I have not read Kipling before, but am familiar with the movie adaptations.The book is very enjoyable.The size of the book and size of the font make it easy to read.My kids loved me reading it to them.They all want to name our next cat Bagheera now.It is a fabulous book.
