Surprisingly Fun
When participating in a storytime session, as I now do weekly, I like to choose picture books with bright images and related to nature, as the sessions are held in a children's museum with a strong ecological emphasis. I chose Surprising Sharks by Nicola Davies for last week's story, because here in Florida, we are quite familiar with sharks. But a reader is in for a - you-guessed-it! surprise with this book as it shares the wonders and intrigue of sharks in easy-to-read text and appealing pictures.

Written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by James Croft, the work is a science text, storybook and environmental lesson all-in-one. Davies doesn't shy around the fact sharks are killers and humans are sometimes their prey but instead, turns this into a lesson about how we can educate ourselves about sharks. Any words too terrifying for little ones, such as "killer" or "bone-crunching" can easily be skipped.

The pages' fonts vary in size, and the illustrations are bright and colorful, making it extremely attractive to children. The overall effect is fun and light, not scary. The facts contained within are interesting, with charts of shark anatomy and tidbits about not-so-common sharks, like the Wobbegong, whose mottled skin resembles a carpet on the sea floor. Also detailed is how sharks are born, their feeding habits, and humans use sharks in every day products.

My four year old LOVES it
Since our first reading, my four year old daughter loves this book.She giggles at the humor and Nicola Davies wonderful use of her craft. A wonderful literary non-fiction choice.

A Fun Shark Book!
This book is great for kids who love sharks.It is sassy, funny and breezy.I recommend it.

Jaws ah-plenty
Word on the street (which is to say, librarian-based listservs) has it that the book "Surprising Sharks" is incredibly popular these days.Having heard that this book was flying from shelves across the country, garnering the love and respect of thousands of children every day, I thought I'd check it out myself.It's very rare that a non-fiction book becomes overwhelmingly accepted by kids.But when it happens, watch out!It might be all you can do to keep the l'il buggers from reading it day and night and day again.

The book is a clever look at the wide variety of sharks living in ocean waters today.From the tiny sixteen inch cookie-cutter shark (which wins my love on name alone) to the vast twenty-nine foot six inch basking shark, this book has `em all.It includes a variety of amusing factoids in its text, providing copious amounts of useful information.In a well drawn graphic section, the book examines the common properties that all sharks share, both inside and outside the body.Kids reading this book learn about the different parts of the shark and why they're so awfully dangerous.Most interestingly of all, the book makes it perfectly clear that while sharks do kill an average six people a year, people kill an average 100 MILLION sharks a year. The book finishes up with an index of all the sharks in the text (for kids' easy referencing) as well as a bit of shark history to boot.

I was a little sad that author Nicola Davies didn't give any space to a bibliography of sources kids could use to find out more about sharks and their ways.Still, that's small potatoes.Davies certainly seems to have plumbed every last bit of interesting information about sharks she could find.I mean, who knew that the gel-filled pits in a sharks nose detect the electrical messages in a prey's body?Or that latern sharks have light making organs that help them blend into the silvery surface of the water around them?News to me!Illustrator James Croft gives the book an easy-going cartoonish feel that doesn't particularly add much to the book, but neither does it detract.The book's brightly colored and amusing.Just not particularly original in that respect.

If you need a good non-fiction picture book that'll give some of the more scientifically minded kiddies the thrills they seek (and frankly, what kid isn't interested in man-eating animals with big nasty teeth?) "Surprising Sharks" is your best bet.It's not gory, but it'll certain give some kids the thrill of fear they seek in their non-fic lit.An enterprising and engaging book.

Touching and informative children's book
I purchased this book for our grandchildren who were fortunate enough to see baby loggerheads hatch on the beach at Hilton Head this summer. Knowing it might be a once in a lifetime experience, I wanted them to have a rememberance of the event. This book's lovely illustrations and informative story line did just that. It gave all of us a chance to relive the turtle's life story and learn some new facts about loggerheads as we read the book together.

Lyrical Loggerhead Lifecycle
I looked up the word "lyrical" to make sure I was using it correctly in my alliterative title. One of the definitions conveyed exactly what I was going for: expressing deep emotion. Davies has somehow taken a simple children's book, brimming with facts and details of the lifecycle of a loggerhead turtle, and turned it into an emotion filled, heart-tugging inspirational story.

Instead of a baby talk primer, this book inspires true literacy with verses like:

"Floating in the sea she weighs nothing, but on land she's heavier than a man. So every flipper step is a struggle, and her eyes stream with salty tears, which help keep them free of sand."WOW - What a beautiful way to convey information.

Life cycle of the loggerhead, written for children and those who don't grow up...
"Far, far out to sea, land is only a memory, and empty sky touches the water.Just beneath the surface is a tangle of weed and driftwood where tiny creatures cling.This is the nursery of a sea turtle" (p. 1-2).

Nicola Davies story of the life of the loggerhead sea turtle, combined with the outstanding illustrations of Jane Chapman, make this an entertaining book on sea turtles for children ages 3-7.The larger text focuses on the story of survival of one loggerhead, while smaller text provides more detailed information.The hardcover book is quite large, making it a great book for holding open and reading to a group of children.

This is one of the nicer books for very young people on sea turtles.

Minor issues:

"Sea turtles are great wanderers, traveling thousands of miles each year, often far from land."Many subadult and adult sea turtles go through periods where they just "hunker down" in their foraging and resting areas.The grand travels tend to be restricted to the times they visit their nesting areas (every 2-4 years) and when they are still growing in those first few "lost years" of pelagic foraging.Leatherbacks, of course, are a real exception, since they always seem to be traveling.

"Not much bigger than a bottle top..." (p. 8).Actually, a hatched loggerhead is never the size of a bottle top, and a growing loggerhead is much bigger.I think a better size reference could have been used here.

"Coming ashore is very risky for sea turtles - they can easily overheat and die.So they only nest at night or in cool weather" (p. 21).I agree coming ashore is risky.But the most important reason is probably avoidance of predation.

Hey, you can't cram everything into a book for young children!I'll use this one in the classroom.

Remarkably Beautiful Book
We received One Tiny Turtle as part of an "undersea pack" assortment of books from Scholastic, and I wasn't prepared for what an excellent book it turns out to be. Packed with information about the lifecycle of loggerhead turtles, One Tiny Turtle is also graced with lush, dreamy paintings of the loggerhead's undersea world. The text is lyrical and challenging to my young reader ("pinprick nostrils" is one phrase that stood out), but clear and easy for her to follow. It's somewhere between a standard "kids read and find out" book and the kind of thoughtful nature writing you expect from the likes of Rachel Carson -- on a level that works well for kindergarten and young-elementary students.

Pre-Teen Book
Although it falls in the "picture book" catagory, the art work is suitable for an older child and it offers so much interesting information about blue whales it is perfect for a student in 4th or 5th grade.My pre-teen granddaughter loved the book.

Enjoyable & Informational
We did not purchase this from Amazon, we borrowed it from the library.

Delightful and detailed large crosshatching colored pen and ink illustrations.It is of note that this is not a storybook - but informational in nature.There are actually two sets of complementary facts being provided simultaneously.While this is an interesting feature throughout the book, there were a few times when it actually disrupted the flow of thought.Facts about blue whales are presented in specific measurements (feet, tons, counts, etc.) as well as relative terms (larger than an elephant, eyes the size of the end of a pencil) and with detailed graphics.We learned interesting facts about migration, birth, nutrition, and communication.

The text was quite extensive and was enjoyed more by our 6-year-old than our 4-year-old.However, the pictures were enough to keep the younger's attention throughout.

Big Blue Whale
This book is a delight to read out loud to children, the illutrations are excellent and the information that is given is also educational.I would reccomend this book for lower primary use, it could even be used for middle primary use to start of a unit of work on Whales.It is also excellent for just reading to your children at home, or as independant reading material.

Perfect science and read-aloud book.
A wonderfully succinct overview of the blue whale and it's habits.

The clear, sweet prose makes delivery of the content easy, and the very fine, soft illustrations demand repeated veiwing. My Preschool and Kindergarten ESL students found it highly engaging.

If there's a better science and read-aloud book around I'd really like to know about it. TEN stars.

Follow this book up with the superb "Is a Blue Whale the Biggest Thing There Is?" by Robert E. Wells. Wells' book uses the whales' size as a starting point for exploring the size of the universe and other very big things (the second step involves putting a hundred blue whales in a really big jar). Bat Loves the Night - and My Kids Love This Book!
This book is an incredibly rare combination of poetic language, valid scientific information, and beautiful illustrations.I bought this for my then 5-year-old, and she loves it...but my preschooler REALLY loves it, so much so that she now has a little bat hanging from the ceiling in her room. (Near the window of course!)

Her father and I like it so much that we actively seek out other books by this author and illustrator.

Engaging, very readable
My four-year-old son loves this book, and I don't mind reading it twice a night for months on end. The story is vivid and lyrical, and the illustrations are beautiful.

Great book for kids
My 5-year old son loves books and animals.The insect kingdom fascinates him and he took an immediate interest in this book. This book on parasites gives children a sense of what parasites are and how they interact with people for better or worse.

I am a scientist working with parasites.When I heard about this book I ordered it for my friend's kids (6 and 10 years old), and they LOVE it.It is very educational and accurate while making the subjuct matter fun.Even the adults in the family love this book.They have been all reading it over and over and talking about the content.

Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!
Yuckiness sells!

Especially to male teens. (And to this male, no longer teen, but still young enough at heart to remember the appeal of yuckiness.) The same authors served that same market segment with Poop: A Natural History of the Unmentionable and Extreme Animals: The Toughest Creatures on Earth.

This book describes bizarre parasites that inhabit people and other creatures. They are cleverly drawn and described in a flat, matter of fact style. Her publisher's website, Walker Books, has a quote that captures her appeal to boys of all ages:

"I don't remember a time when I wasn't utterly besotted with animals. I spent all my time before I went to school, in the garden with my lovely Grandpa (who was small and round and had all sorts of things in his cardigan pockets) looking at flowers, and ants and bird's nests."

This book has enough substance to appeal to much older readers.

Grossly Fantastic!
I read this book to my kids about a week ago and they loved it!My oldest son shocked me last night by telling our friends about the book and remembered some really difficult names...and he's 5!

This book has gross, but never crude information about parasites in it and it is a great read.The illustrations made the complex world of parasites totally understandable and fun to my 4 & 5 year-old audience.This book is pretty long for that age group but they loved every moment of it and never tired.

This covers human and animal parasites and how they get into you and the other animals, what they look like, what their purpose is, how they harm or don't harm you, how some of them are beneficial, and how some of them live amazingly crazy life-cycles.

My kids are pretty young, but I found the information fascinating as well.I would venture to say this is a book for readers of all ages, who have a little bit of curiosity and humor in them.I never ventured to think that parasites would be fun learning about, but this book does just that. ... An Adventurous and Intriguing Read
This has been one of the best books I've read all year. I bought it at my local Half-Price bookstore on a whim, and it turned out to be a great decision! I love how the story realistically portrays the way the two main characters' relationship develops from the two of them contemplating murdering the other, to eventually growing to trust value the other as a friend. It doesn't happen in the course of 500 words as some relationships seem to in other books I've read, it develops thoroughly throughout the entire book. It is also a wonderful adventure full of twists and sometimes tragic turns. I would recommend this book to any one of my fellow book-loving friends! ... Read more

A Wonderful Book, Pictures are accurate
I was fortunate enough to buy my copy of this book in Mousehole in 1996.I was looking at my copy today and wondered if a new one might be available.Since it is, anyone interested in a very nice kids' story should all buy this book and read it to a kid.

The illustrations are wonderful, and, having wandered around Mousehole for a day with my copy in hand, I know them to be extremely accurate renderings of the real village, at least as it was in 1996.

I'm well into adult male-hood, but even I get choked up a bit at the ending!Your children will enjoy it too!

Please buy this book
I am very selective these days, when it comes to buying books.I don't have the shelf space to accommodate new ones, so an acquisition usually means getting rid of something.I say this to lend weight to my imperative--buy this book.Don't get it from the library, or borrow it from a friend.Buy it now, while you can, because even really great books go out of print (I still regret lending my copy of "Need A House? Call Ms Mouse", which I never got back and now goes for $70 used).Other reviewers have said it all, and I agree, from the weeping to the wonder.I actually start choking up when Mowser decides she needs to go with Tom, and by the time they come back into the harbor I'm pausing quite frequently to collect myself and dab my eyes.We have a family tradition of reading this book at Christmas, and even though my son is eighteen now, he still makes sure it's part of our stack of Christmas books ("A Pussycat's Christmas", by Margaret Wise Brown is another--I think I'll go review that one, too, with the same recommendation).

Wonderful Writing, Great Illustrations
Finally, a children's book I can give top scores to in both the writing and illustrations categories!And it is a lovely tale to boot!You and your favorite child will love this story.Buy a copy for you local library's children's section so that more people can enjoy this great book!

The audio version is great as well!
We love to listen to audio books.Sometimes it's hard to tell, though, whether the recording will be a performance or a recitation.In this case, it is a well-rounded performance, and it is a winner!The story is read by Bernard Cribbins, whose voice is warmly textured, with a kindly gravel.The story itself seems to me to be about the mighty power of love, and he expresses that with his reverent delivery.Mr. Cribbins was born in Lancashire, England. Now, whether that's the accent with which he reads, I couldn't say, but his delivery brings the Cornish characters to life, and there you are, sitting by the warm fire, or out at sea taming the Great Storm-Cat. I actually looked Mr. Cribbins up to find out about his accent, and it turns out he's quite famous, Dr. Who and all that, but what did I know?
The sound effects are well-done, and there is original music during the performance that lacks any cheesiness; it's really good stuff, well worth the price of admission.
This recording also passes the acid test, keeping the attention of my tough-crowd seven-year-old. Some of the games and activities at the end are for a younger crowd, maybe, but he likes the extra music tracks and he loves the story itself.

Fond Memories
Being on a quest to assemble a collection of books for future grandchildren, I ordered MOUSEHOLE CAT.This is a book I remember reading to my children when they were young.Very fond memories of taking my children to the library for Story Time, led me to start ordering the books that I wanted to read to future grandchildren.I was very pleased to have found this book.The story and Art in the pictures is all that I remembered.I look forward to continuing my quest. ... Extremely Enjoyable
"Extreme Animals" keeps the reader under its spell from first page to last. Short segments revealing impossible survival facts are accompanied by whimsical, fun illustrations that coincide with and reinforce the text. The author jumps from topic to topic with abandon, dropping one jaw-dropping factual bombshell after another. Each turn of the page introduces a new topic, a new creature, and multiple surprises, revelations, and biological marvels that rival anything Ripley has to offer.




I like the playful, impish illustrations of Neal Layton whose pictures seem to have been drawn by a clever elementary school age artist. Layton's drawings reinforce and illustrate the text well exhibiting some slapstick and subtle humor along the way. One of my favorites is the full page featuring the Kosiest Koat Kontest with a smiling musk ox, seal otter, and bikini'd bowhead whale on the stage under the spotlights. Another full page graphic opposite text explaining how an emperor penguin doesn't lose heat from its feet illustrates the facts perfectly with a diagram of the inner workings of the penguin and an illustrated explanation of the Penguin's amazing coat of feathers. And the pic of the lab tech with a nose on the side of his face is a hoot.

Extreme Animals is a book that belongs in the classroom. It's a book that can teach vocabulary and science facts. It's a book that might kindle a love of reading, that might inspire and motivate a quest for additional knowledge. For example, the author writes of the invasive crown-of-thorns starfish that were cut into pieces, each piece growing back into a new starfish. I'm sure some readers would want to know more about these crown-of thorns starfish .

Educational & Fun!
Even though I studied English in college, I'm kind of a science nerd.Science can be an awful lot of fun and I love learning new facts about the creatures that live on Earth.EXTREME ANIMALS is one of the better short animal fact books, oriented towards children, that I've read in several years. The book examines a wide variety of creatures on the planet that are capable of living and surviving under the harshest conditions.From the freezing cold temperatures of the Artic to the blasting inferno inside a volcano to the massive pressure living near the bottom of the ocean to the ferocious aridity of a desert to the zero atmosphere of space, there are animals and organisms from our planet that can survive all of those environments and more.The book is written in a very easy-to-understand manner, e.g. comparing they way frogs use sugar to keep from freezing to antifreeze, and is sure to be a joy for young enquiring minds.The text is accompanied with playful, almost animated illustrations from Neal Layton that make the book even easier to enjoy, as well as displaying some of the information visually.A highly recommended book for those interested in science and animals (especially children), as well as something to supplement a science lesson in a preschool class.

Fun non-fiction
Anyway, I love this book. I mean it. If you have a kid in like 3-5 grade who loves animals, buy this one. It's filled with truly amazing facts about all kinds of critters, including polar bears, wood frogs, thermophiles and sperm whales. Compared to the other animals, humans are just wimps. And who would have known that the the title for toughest creature would go to one I've never hear of before. Of course, you'll have to read the book to find out what it is. I'll give you a clue: it starts with a "T" and is really small.

The book is conversational in tone, with the facts thrown in. It makes it enjoyable to read, not at all dry. The illustrations are cartoony and funny. It's learning and fun rolled into one.

Definitely not just a children's book
I love this book. It is fun to browse through (cartoon-like illustrations make it fun). But it is definitely a book chock full of information. How do seals dive so deep and not get the bends? How do frogs survive winter after being frozen like popsicles? Can an organism really survive temperatures exceeding 230 degrees or as low as absolute zero, -459 F?Not only does this little book provide these answers and explanations, it will leave the reader hungry for more mind-blowing revelations about life on this planet, and perhaps on the next. Warning: It will be difficult not to read snippets to whomever is in the room with you.

A fun factual read
Lots of people have written about penguins, polar bears, and bacteria--but not this way! Nicola Davies has written stories about the roughest, toughest, baddest animals there are, so funny I was laughing out loud and so good I couldn't put it down.

She brings life to the dullest subjects. Is a sponge an interesting creature? It never was to me, but her account is. She says, "To be honest, even live sponges don't do much. They just sort of sit there and grow.But put one in a blender and you'll see that they do something no other animal can: pour your sponge smoothie back into its seawater home, and it will put itself back together..."

Explanations that are accurate but make sense to a non-scientist (animals with "antifreeze" in their bodies, for example) and deceptively simple illustrations by Neal Layton make this one of my new favorite books. ... Read more
