A good buy for environmental science teachers/students - most of the activities contain really useful background information and the lab write-ups are well-structured. The only thing to note is that some of the lab experiments require some material/equipment that may not be available or expensive to purchase

interesting
This book is for a class I have, but it is not boring to read like some text books can be.

gives historical perspective
[A review of the 8th Edition, published in 2006.]

In this somewhat short text, the authors explain the turbulent history of the Middle East. Key ideas like a secular pan-Arabism, militant Islam and globalisation are invoked, as necessary to understanding the current region. We see how pan-Arabism gave rise to the Baathist regimes in Syria and Iraq. Though for the latter, at least till the American invasion of 2003. Globalisation is a major cause of outside forces, like secular consumerist societies of Europe and the US, overlapping with deeply traditional Muslim mores. Often to the puzzlement of both sides.

Of course, the role of Israel and Palestine has impacted so much in the region, and the book also addresses these factors.

While the text was written in 2006, it necessarily cannot deal significantly with the events in Iraq for 2006. Rather, you can read it as a historical perspective.

A decent introductory text
This book, along with it's companion, THE MIDDLE EAST by the Congressional Quarterly, was used in my undergraduate course on the History and Governments of the Middle East.

Politics and Change views the Middle East from a variety of perspectives: sociological, anthropological, political, historical and religious.It looks at the bases for diversity & unity in the region and the rise of Islam.It then discusses the formation of the early Islamic state and the development of the Sharia (religious law)from the Koran and the hadith (or statements and actions ascribed to Mohammad), the development of the Shia in opposition to the corrupt secular governments and the rise of the different sects. It then moves on to a discussion of Western Imperialism and the resulting development of nationalism and individual states (as opposed to the Umma or body of the believers as a whole), including the growth of Zionism and the establishment of the Israeli state.

Then changes in the political landscape, especially the (failed) Oslo Accord, are discussed as are religious and politics - and the 3 types of political elites and of the various forms leadership has taken.Moving on, it touches on the relations of the individual nations with the great powers (including the remnant of the now-defunct Soviet Union during its cold war competition with the United States) as well as looking at the foreign policies of the regional powers and at changes that have taken place globally (e.g., the fall of the old Soviet Union), the American-Iraq Persian Gulf War and the tensions with Kuwait and with regard to the Israeli-Palestine issue and Israel's relation to the larger Arab world.

Although this is only an introductory text, it makes a serious attempt at providing a holistic view of the Middle East and its often insoluble-appearing problems.

Good source for understanding Middle East
I read this book as a required text for my Middle East Politics class which was taught by one of the authors, Prof. Seibert. I think it gives an accurate walkthrough to the history of Middle East Politics. It stays clear of any bias while trying to examine and integrate economic, social and political factors together. A Look from the Inside
This is a terrific introduction to the difficulties of putting a story into an illustrated- visual form. Gary Ganni does a great job with the text, which is a pleasant surprise for an artist. When one sees the scope of his work it is easily seen why the Foster illustrations of the 40s and 50s looked better. From the designer's point of view he had a lot more space to deal with. The current funnies are a fourth page that make production much more challenging. It is also apparent that all three of the illustrators who have worked on the series are master craftsmen and cannot be fairlycompared as they were appealing to vastly different audiences with different technologies. The similarity of Gianni to Foster is readily apparent in THE PRINCE VALIANT PAGE in the expanded reproductions of his preliminary pencil sketches and ink drawings . The most salient difference that I can see is the coloring. Foster's work is with water color while the pictures in this book appear to be computer generated. Any enthusiast of the series will covet this book.

A Testament to a Brilliant, Dedicated Artist
I have poured over every page of this book in complete amazement.Just look at the cover illustration, with the wonderfully ink-rendered face and hands, plus the expertly depicted chain mail.Gianni is a true master.
The book discusses the process of creating the Sunday page, and it includes many reproductions, including preliminaries, pencils, finished black and white pages, and a few color fold-outs.It certainly gives the artist a worthy treatment.What more could be desired?Nothing, unless you had some desire to read Val's adventures in uninterrupted sequence.Will these ever be published in book or web form?The few color pages in this book are quite beautiful- perhaps specifically colored for this edition as another reviewer suggested.How nice it would be to have a whole book like that depicting a single adventure.

Read the old stuff
In contrast to the other reviewers here, I've been disappointed by the turn Prince Valiant has taken since Gianni took over.The drawings seem far less detailed and inspired than John Collen Murphy's, and the faces seem "off" somehow.Even the colors look paler.And Gianni seems almost lazy when he draws a large shield full of text to fill a large portion of the strip each week, rather than filling the panel with a drawing that illustrates the story.As for the plot, the stories progress ploddingly slowly each week.Sometimes I don't even turn to this strip in the Sunday paper anymore.I'm going to ask for the original publications (1937-1938) for birthday or Christmas.

Link to the Golden Age of Illustration
Prince Valiant has been published continously in Sunday newspapers since 1937. In seventy one years, there have been only three illustrators of whom Gary Gianni is the most recent.Following Hal Foster and John Cullen Murphy must be something akin to following Sean Connery and Roger Moore in the role of James Bond.There is a lot of pressure from fans to maintain the same high levels of excellence.

The Sunday Prince Valiant comic is the most intensely designed strip the genre has ever produced.The most interesting aspect of "The Prince Valiant Page" is Gary Gianni's description of the process that goes into producing the weekly comic strip.The level of detail and preparation is simply extraordinary.

With the rise of the Internet, the American newspaper industy is facing its greatest crisis.Who knows if my own children will even read newspapers when they become adults.But my sense is Prince Valiant will survive.There will always be a fascination for adventure stories and a deep admiration for beautifully crafted illustration.Gary Gianni should be very busy for the next twenty five years or so.

Drawn to Valiant
I have been a fan of Prince Valiant for more than 50 years, so I have seen the work of the previous artists. This was a very nice introduction to the details of picking up a legacy and carrying it forward with style. I have to agree with John Cullen Murphy's early assessment of Gianni's style...too many lines. Doesn't seem to be a problem now, and it was good of Gianni to show the difficulties he had in taking over. Historical Perspective on great American Hunting Tradition
Classic Deer Camps offers a lot of information about the great American tradition of deer hunting to novices like me. The author, Robert Wegner, provides perspective and details about several classic deer camps during the early 20th century from across the country. The photos are great, the text is solid, and I enjoyed the inclusion of several old hunting ads, and postcards. The author delves into a little too much detail for my taste at times, but overall it is a quick read. If you enjoy outdoor writing, with a historical perspective, about deer hunting then you will enjoy this book. I learned a lot, and am much more motivated to get in the field this fall.

Excellent book
Robert Wagner has written several books about deer hunting and about historic deer camps.The text is excellent and provides some great historical data, perhaps redundant in a couple places but nothing that takes away from the overall rating of the book.The "prize" is in the historical pictures of the late 19th and early 20th century.Well worth having if you're into historical hunting information and pictures. ... Comprehensive, but a few shortcomings
I agree with the other reviewers in that this book is very comprehensive and -mostly- well written. It's very up to date, and contains evidenced based medicine. Glossy pages and beautiful images help too. This book contains a lot of radiopharmacy and basic sciences, which would come in handy.

However, there are a few shortcomings. As with all books with multiple contributors, I find some points being extremely redundant. Sure, it's good to nail those into your head, but I find it annoying. Second, I find the practical aspects of nuclear medicine to be not as thorough as I had wished. One example while reading the pediatrics urology section, the authors explained the development/anatomy of the kidneys and ureter in three full pages, yet there is not even one sentence about the interpretation of radionuclide cystography. Let me repeat that, not even one sentence. There was no information on the grading and interpretation of the VCUG or radionuclide cystography. I find that troublesome. I sometimes find more useful information in my Requisites than this two volume book.

So if you have money to spend, want something pretty, and don't already have a good reference then this two volume book will be useful to you.

Comprehensive, current, and shockingly readable
These tomes are comprehensive, as current as any text can be, and are remarkably well-written. The usefulness of many other medical textbooks is impaired because many knowledgeable physicians just can't write well enough to effectively convey what they know; the more specialized the topic, the more prevalent and worse the readability problem becomes. The index is comprehensive so facilitates use as a reference, but these tomes are so well-written as to be worthy as a primary learning tool. Radiology residents can make do with The Requisites or Mettler, but anyone who needs more than a gloss would find their $400 well spent on these volumes.

My only criticisms? (1) The "it's in the other volume" problem inherent to all multi-volume tomes and (2) considering that the topic is imaging, the set is short on images, especially short of differential diagnosis comparison images.
