Product Description
This book analyzes the lifelong impact of Beethoven's music on Wagner and its importance for his conception of music drama. Kropfinger charts and scrutinizes Wagner's early responses to the composer and considers his experience as a conductor of Beethoven's music. A discussion of the Romantic "Beethoven image" leads to a careful study of Wagner's aesthetic writings, including his "programmatic explanations," the text "Concerning Franz Liszt's symphonic poems," and his Beethoven centenary essay. The penultimate chapter addresses Wagner's theory and practice of music drama, which he came to regard as the preordained successor to the Beethoven symphony. By analyzing special terms--such as "Leitmotiv"--Wagner's structural view of musical drama comes to the fore; it is a view that deepens not only our understanding of musical drama as a "hybrid" genre of art but also of purely musical structure and forms that Wagner sought to outdo. ... Product Description

"One might say that where Religion becomes artificial, it is reserved for Art to save the spirit of religion." With these words Richard Wagner began "Religion and Art" (1880), one of his most passionate essays. That passion made Wagner himself a central icon in the growing cult of art.

Wagner felt that he lived in an age of spiritual crisis. "It can but rouse our apprehension, to see the progress of the art-of-war departing from the springs of moral force, and turning more and more to the mechanical," he wrote. In response to the frightening progress of dynamite and steel, Wagner adopted the role of the Tone Poet Seer, who reveals the inexpressible in concert halls and cleanses souls in waves of symhonic revelation.

"Religion and Art" is the pivot of the works collected here. Also included are his defining essays "Public and Popularity" and "The Public in Time and Space"; his papers relating to the creation of the Bayreuth School; his complaint against publishers, "On Poetry and Composition" (1879); his article on the first production of Parsifal (1882); and other works that speak his mind about strengthening the spirit through music.

These works participated in the duel between Wagner and Nietzsche that ensued after the breakup of their friendship in 1878. Nietzsche publicly called Wagner an incurable romantic, emphasizing how sick he thought both Wagner and his art were. Here Wagner counterattacks with arch innuendo and sarcasm.

This edition includes the complete volume 6 of the 1897 translation of Wagner's works commissioned by the London Wagner Society.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALITY WAGNER OR THE WAGNER BIBLE
I have been listening to Wagner's music and studing him since I was 5 years old... So it is what that perspective I write this review... What is most facinating about this book, is that the reader is not reading someones persepctive about Wagner and what he said, but Wagner himself. There is virtually no lense of bias here, just Wagner in his own words. In addition, unlike "My Life" (Mein Laben), Wagner's autobiography, where many accuse him of coloring the facts; here Wagner just wrote what was on his mind.He never considered the letters would be published, much less being able for purchased through a medium like the internet. From the beginning letters to the final pages, you can see Wagner grow, concepts change and broaden. There is an entire letter for example, dedicated to explaining the meaning of Kundry's Kiss and her relationship to Parsial in Parisfal Act II.On the other hand the challanging aspect about the book, is that regarding such comments lays to rest most points of view and theories about such aspects of Wagner's music dramas. In other words, regardless of what lecturers or writers have said about Kundry's kiss (again as an example), Wagner's own definition must now become the foundation to any other interpretation. His letters speak of his works, friendships, philosophy and more...I highly recommend this book for the serious Wagner lover, student and researcher....I have fondly renamed this book as the Wagner Bible. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very fine overview of most important aspects of Wagner.
This book provides an excellent one-volume treatment of most of the major aspects of Wagner's work, and the influence he had and continues to have. The essays are by recognized authorities, and provide a generally balanced view.Particularly good is the essay on his complicated attitude towards Judaism, and the several essays which deal with his influence outside of the strictly musical sphere. The only thing missing is a biographical overview. For one who is interested in having more information about Wagner than what is available in Grove or Grout, this book, along with Gutman's biography, will provide a very fine introduction to Wagner. ... Product Description
Previous studies of Wagner's operas have tended to approach the works as chunks of autobiography, philosophical speculations or historical-political comments on the age in which they were written.Professor Dahlhaus dissociates himself from all such ventures. His aim is to discover by careful analysis of the works from Der fliegende Hollander to Parsifal what are the dominant features of 'music drama' and how Wagner achieves such profound, unified effects. Professor Dahlhaus cites music examples only when they are germane to his argument and requires from his readers no more than a limited amount of technical musical knowledge. This is not, therefore, an exclusively specialist study. Rather, it will help the enthusiastic beginner to come to terms with these great works of art as well as offering many valuable insights to the experienced Wagnerian. ... Read more

Product Description

Wagner's operas can be counted among the most important works of art of the nineteenth century. But Wagner was a composer around whom violent artistic, political, and literary controversies raged during his lifetime. Even today, Wagner's music seems to arouse either adulation or antipathy. In The Complete Operas of Richard Wagner, as in the first four volumes of his famous series on the great opera composers, Charles Osborne first describes the composer's life at the time he wrote each opera, thus providing a biographical thread which runs through the book; follows it with a thorough examination of the libretto and its sources; and lastly tells the story of the opera, which he links to the major musical features. This book is, in effect, a musical biography of Wagner, tracing his development from his first complete opera, Die Feen, to his last, Parsifal. It serves as an invaluable guide to the often perplexing Wagner oeuvre both for the regular opera-goer and the armchair listener.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate; mediocre. Ernest Newman does same thing better.
Osborne gives some background on the writing of each of the mature Wagner operas. Then a quick plot summary, with some of the key musical themes.Since a synopsis comes with every complete opera recording, I'm not surehow useful these synopses are. We get too much explanation of plot and notenough critical commentary, by my standards. And little in the commentaryis new; Ernest Newman's book "Wagner Nights", though 50 or soyears older, is still a better introduction, making the same points asOsborne, and more.

Not all the commentary is reliable; the chapter on"Parsifal" buys into some of the nonsense first talked by RobertGutman about this opera (the Grail knights as homosexual SS order, and soon), which has been comprehensively and devastatingly demolished by LucyBecket in her book "Parsifal".

I find Osborne's"even-handedness" a little irritating at times. "Tristan undIsolde", he says, is a masterpiece, though it's too long, of course. That reminds me of Mozart's reply to the Emperor who thought his "IlSeraglio" score had "too many notes": "Which notes doyou think I should take out?" (I'm quoting the "Amadeus"movie there, and from memory, so that's not quite what was really said, butclose enough.) Like Mozart, I find that a dumb comment, unless Osbornecares to tell us which parts of "Tristan" etc we should do awaywith to make it shorter. And I think the job of someone writing anintroduction to any composer is to be critical, certainly, but also tocommunicate enthusiasm, not weariness.

So for new insights, Tanner,Magee, Millington are better, and for "sources, plot plot summary plusmusical commentary" Newman is better. It's not actually bad, justmediocre. Also, unlike Newman Osborne covers the first three Wagner operas,"Die Feen", "Das Liebesverbot" and "Reinzi",so that's quite useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Brown Book
In 1865, Cosima von Bulow presented Wagner with an elegantly decorated, brown leather book, to record his thoughts to her when they were apart. This volume, which came to be known as the "Brown Book", did not see the light of day for almost a century, and biographers and fans alike came to despair of ever reading it. In 1975, it was finally published, and the English translation came in 1980. This is that book. It has a photo of the original diary, along with half a dozen facsimile pages from the original. It also features rather extensive and informative notes by the editor. The preface has a history of the "brown book".
In the end, this book is not as fascinating as you might expect. If you have already read Cosima's diaries and Wagner's My Life, then view this book as a supplementary volume. The only really interesting part is the Parsifal sketch.
It was used by W as a diary, but only for the second half of 1865; for the remainder, he used it as a sketchbook for various rough drafts. About half of its contents were previously published.
This is a brief synopsis of the contents:
**p.28-86. Diary entries Aug 1865 to Feb 1866. Also has a poem to King Ludwig, and rough drafts to Parsifal.
**89-92. Entries from 1867.
**93-124. Annals for 1846-1867. Autobiographical material of interest to biographers, since it has not been published before.
**125-204. Assorted rough drafts: poem to David Strauss, forward to German Art and Politics, forward to Opera and Drama, TOC for his collected works, Ludwig Schnorr, theme for Romeo and Juliet, The Victors, several poems for King Ludwig, a couple of diary entries, a comedy, poem to Henriche Laube, Annals for 1868, New Year's Eve theme, Beethoven and the German Nation, A Capitulation, To the German Army, What is German, fragments, Male and Female in Culture and Art.
