Unusally poor science book
I usually love the DK books because of their illustrations and factoid text, but was extremely disappointed with this workbook and ended up returning it to Amazon.

At first glance, the material looks very interesting.I was especially excited about the "plan a healthy menu" section.However, the questions in the workbook are not covered in the text-- most notably the information on nutrition and the human body.The book assumes you already have a better-than-basic knowledge of the subjects it teaches (higher than 5th grade), and asks questions that cause you to draw on your own knowledge to answer questions making it a very poor workbook indeed.The questions require far more in-depth knowledge than is covered in the book, which would make completing the pages impossible for the student.

I bought this book for my children to use during the summer, but was very disappointed.This book is definitely not for the self-directed student and it is not a stand-alone science workbook.

Fun Intermediate Workbook for Grade 5-6
The activities in this book adhere to the National Research Council's "National Science Education Standards" and introduces science in a way elementary children can understand.

Learn Science uses an inquiry-based approach and each page of questions includes an answer key and detailed explanations. The answer section has notes for teachers, tutors or parents. A progress chart at the start along with a page of stars helps to keep kids motivated. There is also a certificate at the back of the book that can be placed on the refrigerator or bulletin board.

Placing a bottle over a burning candle shows why oxygen is needed for something to burn. A section on microbes show how germs could travel to food and make you sick. The section called: "Drugs and You" shows why alcohol and cigarettes are not good for you. An emphasis on keeping healthy in more detail is introduced in this workbook.

Children learn about parachutes, why friction is a force and how water evaporates. Learn Science Grades 5-6 provides a good introduction to the basics of Solids, Liquids and Gases. They also learn about germination, insulation and how matter changes form.

a must have for a school-age child
This math dictionary is a wonderful resource for any child in the elementary school-age category. Many different topics are covered. I was instructed how to use the LCD and LCM when I was a 3rd grader; however, the curriculum for third graders is not covering this material as yet. I simply reached for my handy dandy Math dictionary and my son was able to read and verify the info I was presenting to him.
