3-0 out of 5 stars I ordered bass tab and got guitar tab
I've already got the guitar tab version of this book which is pretty good. This order was supposed to be for the bass tab book. Despite my best efforts to insure I was ordering the correct product, I now have two of the same book.

5-0 out of 5 stars note for note & on the money.
I've been playing for 25 years, and this "In Step" transcription book is on the money and excellent practice for everyone interested. Well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie Ray's In Step
In Step was personally my favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan album I loved how double trouble added a keyboard player to the band. I just recently bought this book at a guitar center yesterday. I love the song Rivera Paradise their so many words I could say about it but as complicated as it is the tab is 100% correct. I think for any guitarist this would be a pleasure to learn. If you want to rock the way Stevie did get In Step. This book is very deatailed all the notes are clear and understandable their is also tab. It seems many guitarist read tab now but to know the timing you need to listen to the CD In Step if you dont have the CD In Step then its not worth it to waste your money on this book until you buy the album. I am learning as of now Rivera Paradise its the best song on the album. My personal favorites on In Step are The House Is A Rocking, Crossfire, Wall Of Denial, and Rivera Paradise. If you want to learn Stevie Ray Vaughan 100% buy this book and you will admire it in a sense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative Work On SRV
Craig Hopkins' latest book on Stevie Ray Vaughan is an authoritative and detailed account of the life and music of Stevie through 1982 or the pre-commercial years. This is the fourth book that Mr. Hopkins has written on Stevie Ray Vaughan. The current book is actually a more specific account of Hopkins' 2008 release 'Day By Day, Night After Night' but with coverage only through 1982.For those of you who have already read the 2008 book, the new release contains additional text and photos. The organization and style of the current book is patterned after the book 'The Complete Beatles Chronology' by Mark Lewisohn.Mr. Hopkins does an excellent job in detailing an almost day-by-day account of Stevie's life through 1982.There are many, many photographs of Stevie, family and friends, including photos of some of Stevie's equipment, which are now in the possession of Mr. Hopkins. It is obvious that Mr. Hopkins has close ties with some of the SRV family (where else would he get pictures of Stevie as a baby). For those of you who are Eric Johnson fans, Mr. Hopkins' book has accounts of Eric with some interesting photos. After all, there was only 6-weeks difference in age between Stevie and Eric and they were both based out of Austin, Texas.I strongly suspect that a followup book on the years 1983 - 1990 will be written in the near future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie was awesome
I am a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn.Although I did not have the pleasure of seeing him live, I am thankful that I can at least have the pleasure of hearing him. This book is a wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Comprehensive Book About the Life & Times of One of the Greatest Guitar Players Ever - The Late/Great Stevie Ray Vaughan!
This book covers Stevie Ray from childhood, all the way up through his death in 1990, and even after his death, up through about 1992. Stevie Ray was killed in a helecopter crash. Stevie Ray was born & raised in Dallas, Texas. He first started playing his older brother's guitar at their home. His older brother is Jimmy Vaughan, founding member of the "Fabulus Thunderbirds" band. Stevie grew up in the same neighborhood with another Texas Guitar Great, Doyle Bramhall (who is the father of current Texas Guitar Great Doyle Bramhall II). Also Stevie had some interaction with Texas Guitar Great Charlie Sexton, who was younger than Steive. Doyle II & Charlie along with Double Trouble currently have a band called "ArcAngels". They have a great new concert dvd and live cds of this concert available from their website, and they are highly SRV influenced.

This book covers the Texas Music scene, and especially the Austin, Texas Music scene also, because this environment influenced Stevie's life. It covers that Willie Nelson was instrumental in getting the Austin, Texas Music scene going, back in the early 1970's. It covers some other Texas musicians that somehow had interacted with Stevie, such as ZZ Top, Johnny Winter, Doug Sham, & especially Albert Collins, and others. It covers a little of the "Cosmic American Music" explosion of Gram Parsons, even though he was not a native Texan.

On page 163 it covers the "Southern Rock Music Scene", including the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie, and others.

This book covers how Stevie Ray gained fame by playing in huge, Texas Honky Tonks, how he met Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble) and the formation of their band. During this time they started working on their first album "Texas Flood". They were interrupted, by getting an opportunity to play in the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switerland. So they went & performed. This was during 1982, and they were booed off the stage. However, David Bowie was in the audience & he was very impressed with Stevie's guitar playing, and invited him & Double Trouble over for a talk. The result, Stevie Ray played the lead guitar on David Bowie's famous studio album of 1982/83, "Let's Dance". So, when you listen to the music on that album to songs like "Let's Dance" & "Little China Girl", the fantastic guitar playing you are hearing is that of Stevie Ray's. Bowie wanted Stevie to go on a World Tour with Bowie, but after agonizing over it, Stevie declined the offer to tour with Bowie. He instead wanted to finish his 1st ablum "Texas Flood", with Double Trouble, and they did in 1983. It won a Grammy for best Blues Album or something like that.

Stevie Ray & Double Trouble returned to the Montreaux Jazz Festival again, during 1985, and this time they received standing ovations, plus there were people in the audience waving Rebel flags, this was sometime around the performance of "Look at Little Sister". Anyway, there is a DVD of both Montreaux performances, in one package, available from Amazon. I have one, and it is fantastic, especially the 1985 performance, because it includes Reese Wymans on keyboards, and Texan, Johnny Copeland on electric guitar for a couple of songs. This book mentions that Stevie had Texas black bluesman Johnny Copeland to join him on stage for a few songs in the 1985 concert. The crowd loved them, this time around. They actually did 2 encores!!!

Stevie Ray won 2 awards at the 5th annual W.C.Handy National Blues Awards Convention in Memphis. Stevie was named "Entertainer of the Year & Blues Instrumentalist of the Year." It was the 1st time in the history of the event that a white person had won either category. (P.180). Stevie Ray was heavily influenced by black bluesmen, especially Albert Collins & Jimi Hendrix.

This book covers Stevie's drug & alcohol addiction & how he totally recovered from it.

It covers the addition of Reese Wymans to Double Trouble. Stevie spotted him playing keyboards in a Texas Honky Tonk.

Anyway, this book covers Stevie's marriage & divorce to Lenny, and his new girlfriend who he was living with, when he was killed. Her name was Janna Lapidua, and she was from New Zealand. It covers Stevie's & Double Trouble's career up through Stevie's death in a helecopter crash, 20 years ago, in 1990.

This book covers Stevie's funeral, and it is very touching, you had all these great blues musicians there, paying respect & tribute to Stevie.

Then the book covers the next few years after Stevie's death, up until about 1992.
It has a discogrophy from "Texas Flood" in 1983, & releases on up through about 1992. This book has an index, making it easy to locate specific things in the book.

This book has been praised by "Entertainment Weekly" and The "Austin Chronicle".

The book was published/copyrighted in 1993, the author is Joe Nick Patoski, who at the time was a senior editor at "Texas Monthly", & columist for the "Austin American-Statesman". He also had contributed articles to "Rolling Stone" and other music magazines.

This is a great book about a great man, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any one who appreciates SRV's music
An interesting artist who lived the maybe not-so-typical rock and roll life of early success, drug addiction, sobriety, early death. In his final years, while sober, he produced some of his best work and played with every well-known blues guitar artist on earth, including his inspiring older brother, Jimmy Vaughan.

I wasn't impressed with the writing style, although the authors did a great job of including a plethora of dates, names, and places. I'm thankful the authors did not attempt to write the book from what would have been SRV's perspective, taking guesses at his inner thoughts and feelings. Instead it is written more from the perspective of a roady or someone deep inside the SRV camp.

Despite it's lack of overall character, the book is an easy read and an essential for any one who appreciates the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I agree with another reviewer that the ending seemed to flow much nicer than the rest of the book. In fact, the increasing amount of detail and the slowing of the clock in the pages leading up to SRV's demise gave the spine tingling sense that the end was nearing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the SRV fan

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep this book with me at all times! Deserves 10 Stars +++
I live in Austin, TX and have been a HUGE SRV fan from the point go. What Craig has done here is nothing short of amazing! No matter how big a fan you are of Stevie's, you're going to find and see things in this book you've never come across before! It's with me all to the time and I treasure it deeply! I was placed on the waiting list to purchase it before it was published and while he was still researching some missing date information on gigs, etc... When I received it in the mail??? I was blown away! I believe he may be doing the research for a book about Double Trouble (Arc Angels and Storyville) as well. I'll get that one too just as soon as it becomes available. Google Craig L. Hopkins and find his website. It's the most informative one on all things Stevie including his gear. He has a great page on his site about Los Lonely Boys, another band very dear to my ears and my heart. This book is worth every penny it costs plus more! Hat's off to Craig for such an amazing book that took many years of research to put together. Stevie would proud!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential & exhaustive - Worth the price !
Great book, richly illustrated and well documented (including many interviews with Stevie's friends and former bandmates).
Highly recommended for any SRV fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for SRV Fans!!!
I received my copy of Craig's book several days ago and simply cannot put it down! It's HUGE and chock full of information, stories, photos and direct quotes from Stevie and his peers, mentors, friends, fans and family and covers his emerging talent from his very earliest years to his untimely death, in chrono order. The author's devotion to his subject is vividly apparent, and Stevie would be so very proud of Craig's work. Thus far, I have laughed out loud, cried, and thoroughly enjoyed learning about Stevie the musician and the man, and what made him tick.

Stevie was an absolute musical genius in my humble opinion, and THE greatest and most unique blues musician to pick up a guitar. He admired and learned from the greats, but he took this and created his own unique style.I am personally very intrigued by musical genius and what drives these individuals, and Craig's book provides insight into this phenomenon.

If you're a Stevie fan, this book is an absolute must-read! Stevie just happened to be a regular guy who possessed a single-minded devotion to his art and outsized god-given talent. He almost lost it, but he refocused his passion and beat back the demons to even greater success. What a terrible, terrible loss his death was, but this book will make you feel like he (almost) never left. You must buy this book! You will be sooooo very glad you did!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive
Since first becoming an SRV fan in 2001, my desire for more SRV material has only increased. When I received this book at Christmas 2008 I literally could not put it down for days. It seems to cover nearly every nook and cranny of his life, personal and professional, and it includes a full timeline of his gigs, loads of behind the scene facts, and hundreds of unique interviews and never-before-seen photographs. If you want to know more about the man, this is your source.

As far as the gripe by another reviewer about price- the author has spent almost 20 years accumulating the material for the book, and he published it with his own funds! The price is totally reasonable for a work of this magnitude, and it is worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're not an SRV fan if you don't get this book
Day By Day, Night After Night by Craig Hopkins is simply the definitive reference of Stevie Ray Vaughan's life.Other biographies have been written, even 2 others by Craig Hopkins, but this is THE most complete account of Stevie's life that has ever been or will ever be written.Don't wait to get your copy as there was only one publishing run and when they're gone, they're gone.Craig's other 2 books have become collector's items commanding high prices, when available. This book will be even more in demand and you'll kick yourself for not getting it while you can. This book is full of photos you have never seen before and accounts of Stevie's life you haven't read before.
If you love Stevie Ray Vaughan you will never find a more complete window into his life than this comprehensive volume.Kudos to Craig for a spectacular culmination of a years long project and a lifelong love.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Here are the problems I had with the transcriptions:
1) Some transcriptions are copied with the solo changed because the solo is the only significant difference in the way he plays the song.
2) Notes are added that aren't there
3) In some passages, the the phrasing is transcribed differently , or the passage is just wrong. You can watch Stevie play it and you know that's not what he's playing.

For the most part, the transcriptions are very close, although there are quite a few exceptions. That's all I really wanted though so that it would save me time transcribing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate Transcriptions of this Great Recording

First, let me concur with the favorable reviews of the DVD/CD left by the reviewers who apparently thought this page was for that product rather than the book(hey, as long as they're SRV fans, it's all good.)Most fans know the legendary first performance started Stevie's journey to well deserved stardom in spite of the crowd's unfavorable response. However, I have met some uninitiated people who mistakenly believe that he played poorly due to nerves or because he was in an altered state of mind. So, for those who don't know, rest assured his performance was FANTASTIC.In fact, the version of "Texas Flood" won a grammy!!!!Although some have conjectured that the crowd reaction was due to Stevie being so loud or because he didn't fit their image of a bluesman, the fact is their booing is completely inexplicable and unwarranted. As for the second performance, Stevie was well established by that time. The crowd gave him the respect he deserved, and this recording shows he gave another of his characteristically astounding performances.

Which leads into one of the reasons why this book of transcriptions is so excellent.Obviously, the music has to be great to begin with before anyone would be interested in trying to explore how it was accomplished.Although I definitely haven't had the time to go through the entire book (with my capabilites, that will take YEARS :-), I have picked out licks here and there that I am anxious to learn. The book has given accurate transcriptions of those particular passages. Also, one of the three transcribers is Jesse Gress (the other two are Pete Billman and Jeff Story),who also did the transcriptions for the "Texas Flood" and "Couldn't Stand the Weather" recordings.I have found those books to be outstanding. If you have those and like them, you will probably feel the same about this Montreux book.

Be aware that the book only transcribes the songs on the CD.So the DVD-only tracks ("Look at Little Sister" "Cold Shot") do not appear. This is a minor point since transcriptions of the studio versions are available and, even without them, there's plenty of material here to keep any aspiring guitarist busy.

These performances include most of Stevie's famous songs, plus he played extended versions in concert, so this book is as good a place as any to begin a quest to get some of Stevie's brilliance under your own fingers.Best of luck to my fellow Stevie Ray admirers!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The people didnt know they were witnessing a legend in the making
This is a Great performance that showcases Stevie Ray's Rise to fame.
Double Trouble was the first unsigned act to play the festival.
The people there had never seen the likes of him before and his
performance was not received well by most of the Die hard blues fans.
You can hear the Boos throughout the DVD.If David Bowie or Jackson Brown
had not been in attendence,He may not have gotten his big break, or it
may have come at a time when Blues was on the Decline, I doubt that
could happen since he was and still is one of the Greatest Blues
artist ever.Get this DVD you will watch it time and time again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at Montreux 1982 and 1985

How else can you learn these lightning fast licks? I love this book, and it contains so many of SRV's songs; the best printed bass SRV collection I've seen, seems accurate too.

This is the greatest Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar-tablature book by all means......including 25 guitar song's spanning SRV's entire career with blistiring blues songs including Texas Flood, and Come On(Pt.3). This also includes live recordings like Im Leaving You(Commit A Crime), and Say What. This also features Pipeline from David Bowie's back to the beach album. I recomend this book to any guitarist seeking for only the best. Everyone can play along to this Lightnin' Blues spanning through 83-87. Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
This is simply a compilation of Guitar World articles about and interviews with SRV.Interesting, but nothing new (for me anyway). But I had already read several other books about him and was simply looking for something that went a little deeper. This didn't do that for me.There are a couple of interviews with other people associated with Stevie (eg, Rene Martinez) that I did find interesting because it went into depth about Stevie's gear, particularly the components of his guitars. For my money, though, "Caught in the Crossfire" is the best book about SRV

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
i can sum it up in a few short words, just awsome. if your looking for a srv book than this is it, a must have a must buy. its a very honest and open book. stevie is the best there ever was or ever will be. he is the king.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice way to know SRV a little better.....
This book is a good insight into SRV and his life.It is not full of intimate details, but it does have a lot of information. And, what is really nice about it is that it is information that comes from direct interviews with SRV, himself, and very close friends, band members, musicians and family. There are guitar tips about how SRV played and some guitar "mini" lesson pages. It also contains some great B & W pictures. An over-all great book for the SRV fan!He was the greatest guitarist to ever walk this earth and is sorely missed...the book proves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente!
This is a great book. It's not like others where you have to wonder about the accuracy of the information, this one is direct from the man's mouth!Required reading for every fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in depth interviews with the legend himself.
Not only is this book full of interviews with Stevie, it also gives you insight in to his personal battles with alcohol and drugs. Stevie Ray was a true innovator and this book not only helps you understand his thoughts, italso feature's his guitar transcriptions. READ IT!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start the blues
you could do a lot worse than start here learning blues guitar. There are a lot of really easy licks, and a lot of really hard licks.Fast songs and slow songs.Masterful bending and killer tone. One thing: if you're gonna tackle this, do yourself a huge favor and get the Tascam MP-GT1- you're progress will be 10x faster- no joke.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great music but several tab errors
Hal Leonard make awesome tab books - it's not like they had much competition anyway...I'm a big SRV fan and this book was very helpful in nailing down some of the faster tracks, like Wham.

However, there's a lot of errors in this book that would've been caught had anyone just taken a final read at it.In Wham, some notes are written for the 24th fret (!) while it is obviously an 8va error and the notes should be played on the 12th fret. Some of the position shifts also don't make much sense, especially considering SRV's very fluid and efficient style.

In summary, I'm glad I bought this book but wish Hal Leonard had done a better job at proof reading the final material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total guitar explosion
For pros, books like these are not truly needed, but for people still on the path of learning, this is a great book to have. You can learn to play along with Stevie, if your fingers are fast enough, but it is definately a good learning experience.I am having an adventure trying to get all these songs down, but then again I am a devoted SRV fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A blues lesson in each measure!
This is an excellent book. In every measure there is a whole blues guitar lesson.Stevie is most certainly one of the greatest blues guitarist of all time.Learning the riffs in this book should help any aspiring guitarist to get a good hold of the blues genre.

4-0 out of 5 stars The sky is crying
I enjoyed this book! I would like to see the authors go into a little more detail about S.R.V. when they made the album. But other than that, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Like the other reviewer please check out Andy Aledort's work
I purchased this book when I was starting out on guitar and was pretty much new to instructional books.I thought that any instructional book would be exceptional in showing me how to be like Stevie or any other guitarist for that matter.Fast forward 4 years later and I got a pretty firm grasp on playing as well as theory and ear training. With that being said this instructional book of the great guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan is very poor in transcription as well as in audio quality of the CD.I'm sure the author is pretty well versed in his profession but his work on this particular project falls way short. When I play some of the transcriptions they just don't match up with what Stevie plays on record. The tone, the attack and the energy are not convincing at all. If any other SRV fan wants to really get a really accurate transcription as well as style analysis please check out Andy Aledort. He is the best in the business and is one of the editors for Guitar World where you can check out his work. And I have to tell you he is spot on with every note and nuances of all the artist he transcribes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Learn from Andy Aledort, not Wolf Marshall
Wolf Marshall does'nt do the most accurate transcriptions. Some songs in this book like Voodoo Chile were really lacking (the cd track sounded like a real amature playing the intro).I bought this book to learn all those little things that really make up SRV's playing style. You won't learn this stuff in this book.About all you will get out of this book is some decent transcriptions and some info on how to play them. Please do yourself a favor and check out anything written by Andy Aledort. He seems to really get into the stuff he writes about and teaches.I bought his book which breaks down some good Hendrix stuff.Money very well spent. ...
