Product Description

Steven Tyler is one of life's natural-born survivors. With an exhaustively vibrant personality, this dynamic lead singer has been one of the most distinctive figures in rock music for more than three decades. Raised in a close, loving family, Tyler survived a tough upbringing in the Bronx. His inherent passion for performing and a talent for playing instruments propelled him into rock music as a teenager. He fronted a succession of local bands before meeting the guys with whom he would form Aerosmith in 1970. Laura Jackson reveals the stories behind Tyler's relationships with band members and the many women in his life, his battle with Hepatitis C, and his drug-fueled meltdown during the late 1970s and early 1980s, when he was snorting pure heroin. She also explores his visits to rehab in the 1980s which saved his life. Tyler has lived a roller-coaster life of excess—spending over a million dollars on drugs—but is miraculously still performing.

1-0 out of 5 stars A pathetic excuse for a biography
Steven Tyler is a rock `n`roll legend, he had an interesting and colourful career with many ups and many downs. It`s no secret that he did it all and had it had; the girls, the fortune, the fame and the drugs. Tyler is one of the most fascinating frontman of rock, his band Aerosmith sold millions of albums around the world, he has his own flashy look and a great voice. A biography on this man would be worth looking at you might think, however this particular one is not. Where Stephen Davis` "Walk This Way" autobiography of the band offered an excellent inside look at Aerosmith and the band members, "Steven Tyler : The Biography" fails just about everything it attempts to do which I`m still not sure what it was exactly. It`s like reading an empty book, really.

Laura Jackson has probably never even met Steven Tyler to begin with which automatically makes the book less interesting. Still you think that there would be some good content and a deep look at Steven`s life, yet it`s not the case here. The information is almost always taken from "Walk This Way" or is generally known by a big Aerosmith fan, This book was written with little real knowledge of the subject, Steven Tyler. However it does cover Tyler`s career...that`s it really. It goes in a straight line to tell you nothing. There`s no interviews with Tyler or anyone remotely close to the band or Tyler himself, it`s just a bunch of information taken from here and there without any real content. The best part of the book is probably the pictures, they really aren`t that great but that`s the truth.

What can I say about Laura Jackson`s "biography" on Steven Tyler? It`s a pathetic excuse for a bio and anyone should stay away from it. It doesn`t even seem as if the author is a fan of Tyler or Aerosmith or is really interested in it. If you are interested in Aerosmith and Tyler I`d strongly recommend "Walk This Way" or Tyler`s upcoming late 2010 bio "Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?" which is sure to be a worthy read, not this garbage. 1 star, a total waste of time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reading this used up time I will never get back.
This book was awful and used up time and money that I'll never get back.Same old stuff rehashed.Similar to Aerosmith records.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get the facts, ma'am!
I was considering this book. Then I read the comments. My first clue to not shell out my hard earned cash was the line: "Tyler survived a tough upbringing in the Bronx." Uh, I don't think that is completely correct. But, even so, "Walk The Way" is SO much more accurate and it's a great read that will hold me over until Steven finishes his book. This bio probably is just what the other comments say it is (and like the song Steven sings on "Elmopalooza") - TRASH.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is Stephen Davis for an update when you need him?
This is the worst rock bio I have ever had the misfortune to read.Like or loathe Steven Tyler and his music, the man is hardly dull.Laura Jackson, in this dreary, hagiographic cut-and paste job (complete with inaccurate plagiarism) has made an utter hash of what should have been a no-brainer.Really, if you buy this - you are very silly.Get it from the library, or do the trashmen's muscles a favour - don't touch it!!

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst biographies ever
This book is nothing more than a watered down version of "Walk this Way: An Autobiography of Aerosmith".Even though it is supposed to be the biography of its front man, there is as almost as much information about other band members, but essentially it is just a distillation of various press reports and other prior publications. There is absolutely nothing new or interesting about this book.It is boring and at times inaccurate. There are numerous anecdotes about other rock personalities whose careers paralleled Tyler's in some way, but this just seems to be pointless filler. To make matters worse, the author's constant efforts to use "hip" language is just annoying.

While the author is touted as someone who gets "close" to rock personalities, I doubt she has ever met Steven Tyler or even been to an Aerosmith concert. There is not a single insight into his personality that has not been already been offered in other works, and although this book is replete with direct quotes, the source is never given. The author does not cite a single personal interview with a band member, family member, friend, business associate, or even groupie or hanger on!

It is not worth the time it took to read it or the money it took to buy it.Steven Tyler is one of rock's most fasinating men, but you would never know it from this book.I would wait for Tyler's own work on the subject, which he is reportedly at work on.At least it will be something that hasn't been written a thousand times before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really living on the edge
I really really loved this book. Some biographies are so boring. They have to talk about every movie they make or every album. This book grabs you from the very begginning. Cyrinda started out with talking about how she had in my opionion had a hard life. Moved around alot, got beaten as a child. Finally then ran away which her mother did not care about. She partied with some people that make me jelous,John Lennon,David Bowie who later she became his lover.
After awhile you get into the good stuff. Talking about Tyler. What a terrible father he was to his daughter Mia, an abusive husband and how his addiction was more important than anything else. I recommend this book to anyone who really likes juicy tales about things.
Cyrinda rest in peace girl. I loved loved this book

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Dream
It's said that one should not speak ill of the dead. But "Dream On: Livin' On the Edge With Steven Tyler and Aerosmith" might leave you wanting to do just that for Cyrinda Foxe-Tyler, the late ex-wife of Steven Tyler and (by her own admission) a huge pain in the backside. Foxe-Tyler's autobiography is a slow embittered grind that seems less like a recounting of her own life than an endless stream of seedy recountings about just what a jerk her ex is.

Born to a moody abusive mother with a penchant for marrying various moody abusive men, Cyrinda (then Kathleen Victoria Hetzekian -- although she refuses to reveal the last, because "I want to leave my father out of this") was a miserable military brat lugged around the globe.

Her refuges: rock'n'roll (Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones), light drug use, and sexual experimentation with the boys on base... and pretty soon, her life was all about those three things. Before long, she had left Oklahoma and Texas behind for the bright lights of the big city, namely New York -- courtesy of Lou Reed and a pair of Danish black boots. And despite being "the most naive, cotton-candy-headed being in the world," Cyrinda quickly established herself in Max's Kansas City, NYC's gay underworld, and Andy Warhol.

And then after a brief first marriage (her first husband is a faceless footnote), she met, got pregnant by and married Steven Tyler, the volatile and popular singer for the band Aerosmith. But of course passion doesn't last forever, and despite having a beautiful daughter between them, their acrimonious marriage was doomed from the start.

There are two kinds of rock wives/paramours: the classy and genuinely intelligent ones like Marianne Faithfull and Bebe Buell, and then there are the Angela Bowie ones who want to shovel dirt on their exes. Cyrinda is solidly in the latter grouping -- "Dream On: Livin' On the Edge With Steven Tyler and Aerosmith" seems to exist solely to smack her ex-husband in the head as frequently as possible, and often as tastelessly as possible (the "dive for it" anecdote is revolting).

When she isn't heaping dirt on Tyler's head, Cyrinda devotes most of the book to ranting randomly about various topics -- she raves about gays, her hatred of religion, her aversion to getting a job (to the point of sleeping with people for room and board) and how she is cooler and more in tune with young people and sex than her contemporaries. She also seems a bit fixated on her own sexual exploits, ranging from unofficial prostitution to a threesome with David and Angela Bowie to voyeuristic peeking at others having sex.

And her embitterment spreads to everything in this book, including other members of Steven Tyler's family --she gets in some digs at his ex-lover Buell and daughter Liv, barely acknowledges his second wife Teresa, and utterly ignores his third and fourth kids.

And it's undeniable that Tyler was a drug-addled mess for countless years... and that's just what his friends say. But despite her seedy anecdotes about Tyler, the person who is most degraded in "Dream On" is Cyrinda herself -- she comes across as lazy (how dare her ex not hire a full-time nanny for someone who refuses to get a job!), hypocritical (she demonizes Tyler for abuse, while proudly talking about the gouges she left in his face -- by her own admission not the only ones) and generally deluded about how others see her ("You're too intellectual!"). Not to mention deluded about her own place in life (seeing herself as an "aristocrat" compared to Aerosmith).

"Dream On: Livin' On the Edge With Steven Tyler and Aerosmith" is a sad memoir of a sad woman, whose bitterness wasn't exorcised until the very end of her life. And that bitterness coats every page of her autobiography, leaving you feeling vaguely unclean.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dream On. Living On The Edge With Steven Tyler.
This type of honesty,in a book, makes one realize that no matter how RICH/FAMOUS/TALENTED/KNOWN,that someone is,that they still OWN ISSUES, maybe more, then the ones who adulate them. They are FLESH&BLOOD, and they make plenty of POOR JUDGEMENTS/HURT THEIR LOVED ONES/CHEAT/LIE, that us FANS hardly know about, because they are"mollycoddled", and attempts are made to always TRY to make them appear on the GOOD side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreaming On and On, Channelling?
Oh, I loved this book and suffered for her as I read it..It was
a well written profile and character development of an intelligent
and special woman who may not have fulfilled her potential except
in her support of her friends and in the writing of this book.
I felt the flavor of her childhood and eventual life in NewYorkCity
and elsewhere..I cared about her and for her...It made me think
and wonder what other autobiographies I could read... She was
not a groupie...but a wife and mother who happened to love
musicians and artists and had a gift for working with special
people...She was an artist in her own right who should be
recognized and admired for her flair and design and aesthetics
and love and light...I highly recommend this book...Next I plan
to read Nora, The real Molly Bloom.
By the way, she is an inspiration to my actress daughter for her
new role and I really found Cyrinda Foxe very likeable.Too bad
I did not get to be her friend....except through her book and
her art on ovoworks/smug.mug..

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a Soap Opera
This biography is about a fairly shallow women who refuses to take responsibility for herself, for what happened to her.She went after Steve Tyler with a vengence, knowing that he was a drug addict, a conceited maniac, knowing his past history with women (some not even old enough to truly qualify as "women" yet). And then she stayed with him even though he terrorized her?Doesn't make a lot of sense. She doesn't even mention her own drug addiction. She paints herself as an innocent who found herself helplessly victimized but she was too savvy, too experienced (she was of the Warhol crowd) going into the marriage to fit that role.Basically, I found myself thinking that this was a woman who wasted her time feeling sorry for herself instead of learning how to do something that would get her a job.Ok, being married to Steve Tyler couldn't have provided her with the safe haven she was looking for but a little more insight into herself, a little more honesty would have made this book a whole lot more credible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars choosing healthy living vs popping pills
I just read a 5 star review by "A Customer" that was written very thoroughly and hadn't planned on adding one of my own until I grazed through the 1 star ratings filled with way too much emotions to be taken seriously. I'm a RD and a college professor highly recommended this author stating he was studying herbs long before their popularity. Although he was viewed as a bit odd for his choice of studies back then, now he is highly respected by the medical community.

Now on a personal note, I am a strong advocate of EATING your way to health and staying active to maintain it. Yes, I'm a fervent believer in ID (intelligent design) - specifically God Almighty. And I have said for years, "If God wanted us to get our nutrients from pills, he would have created plants bearing pills."Instead he gave us wonderful FOOD of all variety and they are a delight to all our senses. While some people want to call this "whole foods" and pay designer label prices, I say, "Hey, keep it simple."

Does that mean I completely dismiss the ideas/benefits of herbs? Absolutely not!History has proven the benefits of medicinal plants from practically every culture/race, but you pill poppers have missed a major point! They used the plants!

Mr Tyler states numerous times that the potentially beneficial chemical compounds of these herbs are best found in the fresh plants and are lost (or their preservation cannot be assured) during the process of making pills. It's just like the whole foods notion.Less processing means more nutrients/benefits.

So, STOP Popping Pills and wasting your money!

If you still have the urge to "throw away" your hard earned money, then please consider a charity to help the orphaned and widows. Here's a personal favorite of mine.
    [...]

Focusing on the needs of others has one of the best placebo affects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
This man hates the use of herbs for health reason and this book is nothing but rubbish. If you are actually interested in the use of herbs then I would suggest you look into another book.If you are interested in spreading hate about herbalists then this is the book for you.

The title is definately false advertising.Honest and "anti" opinionated is not the same thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insulting
People really need to investigate other herbal sources before holding this one in high regard. It seems like Tyler is more determined to be anti-herb than anything else, shunning even herbs that have been shown to be safe in numerous studies and years of use. He even goes as far as to be smugly insulting toward modern herbalists with some of his comments. Countless errors decorate the pages - or should I say soil them? - and there's really nothing I can say about this book that would get this taste out of my mouth. [...]
It's true we need to get the word out about this book, but not as a recommended read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Physicians and Pharmaceutical Companies will Love This Book
This book will appeal only to people who have vested interest in playing down the effectiveness of herbal products - such as pharmaceutical companies, physicians and others who wouldn't make any money if people didn't need their services any more and were able to heal themselves or maintain good health naturally through the use of herbs.

The title of the book is a misnomer. Tyler doesn't offer any information on how to use the herbs - as a matter of fact, from the way he describes them, you'd be sure he never ever touched, or tasted any herb. If you're read this book, you'll discover that there's no point in using any herbs because there are only two categories for herbs in this book: they either fall in the category of worthless or deadly.

Tyler does his best to downplay or completely disparage the effectiveness of every single herb mentioned, and when he is unable to prove that the particular herb is ineffective, then he states that even though the herb was empirically effective, there is no sufficient research to back it up.

The book is basically loaded with information on why you should not bother using any of the herbs listed in this book - either because in Tyler's opinion they are ineffective or they could be dangerous. And for the herbs that have been proven effective and were in use for centuries, Tyler states how "pharmaceutical industry" lost interest in these herbs. Of course they lost interest - how would they have interest in herbs if they cannot patent that are available everywhere? On the other hand, because of people's interest in herbs, you'll find shelves at your drug store loaded with natural supplements. Some people just don't want to poison themselves with pharmaceutical products (for that matter, you may want to check out compenium of pharamceutical products to find out how deadly side-effects of those can be).

If pharmaceutical industry can not make money, why would they still be interested? And to state that this book is free of commercialism, just "honest" herbal - what a joke!

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity."(Burdock happens to be one of the four herbs which have proven very effective in helping people heal innumerable diseases, cancer being one of them, because it does help to detoxify the body.)

About Chickweed, Tyler writes: "Despite the fact that it is prominently listed in almost every catalog of herbs currently available and also that many writers describe it as a valuable herb, I can think of no good reason to allow space to this worthless weed. ... Let's not waste any more time and space on the imagined medicinal value of this ineffective herb." (On a personal note, chickweed is a popular herbal supplement for weight loss...)

And, well, I can only suggest that you invest your money in some other, decent and honest, herbal that actually offers some useful information regarding the use of herbs.Do consult a genuine herbalist who is truly interested in helping people. Tyler's heart only beats for pharmaceutical industry.

Pollen is put in the same category as "peacock's excrement" and to "moss grown on the skull of a man who had died by violence".After listing some nutrients, Tyler states, "None of the identified constituents of pollen has been linked to any significant therapeutic activity as advocated by its enthusiasts."

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I first read this book about 20 years ago and fell in love for the first time. The writing was so well done, that at the age of 12 I felt the pain Sophie and James went through when the war separated them.Theirs was a sweet, tender love that didn't yet know the destruction war brings. The love that Carl and Pia found later in the book, is a different one.It hurts to read about the disillusion and indiference Carl feels, knowing who he was once upon a time. This is a book not only worth reading, but definately worth keeping!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL STORY OF FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, AND LOYALTY IN
WWI.R.T. Stevens tells this stirring story, which does not dwell on the battles in the war, but on the people affected by it.I have read it many times and because of it I have read more of Stevens's books, which focusprimarily on WWI.His stories paint a beautifully realistic portrait of aworld lost. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Let's pick on Steven
I expected Cyrinda to pick on Steven a little during this book but I was surprised at the amount of dirty laundry she aired. Oh well a she was a bitter ex wife when she wrote it and I wonder how much she would recant today if she had the chance after Steven looked after her towards the end of her life. Cyrinda said in the book that if Mia disagrees she can give her view later which she since has done in her book Mia Tyler 'Creating Myself' (which I also purchased from amazon). Mia contradicts or gives her own view on certain events in her mothers book. All up still an interesting read for any Aerosmith or Steven Tyler fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's all true
Cyrimda Foxe; ultra fabulous, tragic underground beauty tells all prior to her untimely death. From It Girl glamor and Warhol Superstardom to destitution and isolation in NH, trying to raise her beautiful daughter alone while her out of control, out of touch drug addict husband Steven Tyler spent the grocery money on blow, it's all here.Highly recommend for any girl who dreams of marrying a rock star.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very misleading book
I have been a huge Aerosmith fan since, well, as long as I can remember! When I saw this book, I thought to myself, "Hey, it's a book on Steven Tyler," and immediately, I bought it. Well, I was in for a big surprise. This "biography" about the lead singer of the world famous band, Aerosmith, turned out to be an autobiography about the author, our hero's ex-wife.In fact the author does not even mention Steven Tyler, let alone Aerosmith, until the middle of the book!
The book starts off with Steven Tyler's future wife (now ex), Cyrinda, as a little girl growing up on an army base. She also says that her childhood was poor and that he mother and father did not even love her. So, as a teenager, she runs away to New York. Here, she starts working for Andy Warhol on plays such as Pork. She eventually becomes the face of an underground scene in New York and marries David Johansen, a member of an underground rock band called the New York Dolls. After that, she becomes friends with Joe and Elisa Perry. Finally, something related to what I came to read about! Cyrinda goes to an Aerosmith show and goes backstage and sees Steven Tyler. Steven shows that he is interested in her. A few years later, while Cyrinda is on the road with Aerosmith, she starts dating Steven Tyler. Here, one would think that the author would give the reader at least a little information about Steven, right? Well, not really. She just basically tells the readers how Steven was very interested in cocaine, and how he used to hit her when he was high. Eventually, they have a baby and name her Mia. Shortly after, they get a divorce and Cyrinda becomes a single mother trying to raise an infant. She does not even really say any information about Steven at all, let alone Aerosmith! In conclusion, this is a good book, but not if you picked it up to learn about the best band in rock history, and their great leader, Steven Tyler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor girl- so sad!
I felt so sorry for Cyrinda after I finished this book. She had such a hard time of it and now she is passed away so I am really glad I own her memoir. I hope she is at peace now and I hope that her memory will live on in the pages of this book. It is worth the read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could've been written better
I don't see why some of the viewers gave this book 1 star and while it's a good book, I felt that it could've been written better and some parts of the book is interesting and I do have Aerosmith's Walk This Way and this was the book that got me interested in Cyrinda Foxe, the routine with Elissa and the airline stewardesses was funny, overall if you like Aerosmith: Walk This Way or Rebel Heart then you'll like Dream On: Livin' on the Edge with Steven Tyler. ... An introductory biography on the accidental president
After watching dramatic machinations regarding the vice presidency on "The West Wing" this season it is interesting to look back at what happened 1841 when William Henry Harrison became the first president to die in office. At that point in American history the Constitution was seen as being unclear as to what happened at that point regarding the question of succession. It was John Tyler, the vice president, who insisted that the Constitution gave him the full powers of the president when Harrison died.Five days after Harrison's death Tyler took the oath of office, thereby establish the precedent that no one questions today. However, all but one of Harrison's Whig cabinet members wuit their posts and the following year the Whigs tried unsuccessfully to impeach Tyler in the House of Representatives.

In this juvenile biography of Tyler for the Our Presidents series, Steven Ferry does a good job of contrasting the popular idea of Tyler as the "Accidental President" with the political struggles that qualify him to be called the most stubborn president of all time as well. The first chapter of this slim volume establishes Tyler as a rebel, who was taught to be independent and to stand up for his beliefs by his father, a judge who became the governor of Virginia.Tyler's political career is covered both in terms of the offices he held but also his commitment to states' rights.Ferry makes it clear that when Tyler was selected as Harrison's running mate on the famous "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too!" ticket despite the fact he did not support many of the Whig ideas.

Tyler's time in the White House is characterized as "An Accidental Presidency," when Harrison died one month into his term having caught pneumonia at his inaugural after speaking for more than two hours in a freezing rain.Ferry details the steps by which Tyler assumed the presidency and then covers the lack of cooperation between Tyler and the Congress, which saw the first time Congress used its power to override a presidential veto.Tyler had some success with foreign affairs, but the Senate refused to ratify a treaty that would have annexed Texas because they did not want to giver the president the credit. The final chapter looks at Tyler's life after the White House, including his involvement with the government of the Confederacy.

By the end of this volume young readers will understand why Tyler was not only unpopular, but was considered a traitor by any Americans. As is the case with these volumes this book has informative sidebars on topics such as Tyler's second wife and the ghost that haunts Tyler's house, and the margins are filled with Interesting Facts about Tyler's personal life and political career. The book is illustrated with historic paintings, drawings, and etchings, and the back contains a Time Line, Glossary Terms, Presidential Facts, and sources For Further Information. As always, the Our Presidents seires remains one of the best introductory looks at the life of Tyler or any other American president. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Historical romance...
Some said the Duke of Cumberland was born of the devil. Without doubt King George's fifth son was dark of soul and design, but his disquieting charm, his wicked ways with the ladies, caused many a female heart to flutter and even the virtuous Lady Hester Russell to succumb.Fortunately, Caroline, the Junoesque, sumptuously beautiful American widow of Lord Clarence Percival and the toast of Regency London, recognized his dark side. Unfortunately, her younger sister, Annabelle was blind to it. Annabelle could have her pick of beaus, but to Caroline's consternation, she became infatuated with the satyric prince. Caroline turns to Captain Charles Burnside for help and then finds herself wondering if his Machiavellian role in her scheme is a trifle absurb...even a trifle dangerous. After all, Captain Burnside is also, in his way, as much a villian as the Duke.

Excerpt: "Walk This Way" is a song by American hard rock group Aerosmith. It was written by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. It was originally released as the second single from their 1975 album Toys in the Attic. It peaked at Number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977, part of a string of successful hit singles for the band in the 1970s. In addition to being one of the songs that helped break Aerosmith into the mainstream in the 1970s, it also helped resurrect their career and revolutionized the new hybrid sub-musical genre of "rock and rap", or the molding of rock and hip hop music when it was covered by rappers Run-D.M.C. in 1986 on their album Raising Hell. In so doing, it helped bring rap into the suburban mainstream, where it has remained ever since. It became an international hit and won both groups a Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap - Single in 1987. The song starts out with the famous two measure drum beat intro by Joey Kramer, followed up the equally famous gui...http://booksllc.net/?id=544210 ... Read more
