From Shame to Fame--A woman for all seasons!

Tina Turner is a woman for all seasons. But it was the life she was forced to live by and with her ex husband Ike that was truly shameful. No woman deserves that kind of subjection, mistreatment--that kind of life! But thank God she was and is a strong woman. She never gave up and, rightly so, rose to fame after she closed the doors on her ever so destructive and tumultuous relationship/marriage

I TINA, tells the Tina Tuner (Born as Anna Mae Bullock) story from birth to individual fame. The crux of the story is her abusive relationship with her ex husband Ike Turner and how she found the strength to drag herself out of the almost endless cycle of battery to freedom. Once freed, she stood on her feet, made a life for herself and family and rose to much deserved fame. She is now that great Ms. Tina Turner as we know her. Many who never heard of or read her story would be amazed to know what this woman of strength went through and somehow survived!

Tina's recount of her life with Ike was impressive. I see a woman of strength and good virtues, who at one point of her life was rendered helpless but not hopeless; a woman of good values, kind and considerate heart, unselfish. I enjoyed her candor, her sweet modesty, sincerity and of course the great sense of humor, even in telling the ugly tales of the past.

Some parts of the story are `hard' to read because of the vivid recollection of the battery that took place on poor Tina's body. I nevertheless recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good and sincere story from the heart and especially to women who have been battered or are going through a battering or abusive relationship. I trust you find the courage to leave immediately!

an inspiration for women and men everywhere
Tina's story proves that you can be in control of your life once you convince yourself of this truth.

It took her 18 years to walk out on Ike and his horrific cocaine-addled abuse. It took her 18 years for this immensely talented woman to realize that all she had to do was turn the doorknob, open the door, and walk out. Don't fear what's on the other side. Just do it. It's your choice. It's your life. Don't stay in a bad situation. Do something about it.

What was on the other side of the door for Tina was happiness, more success, more love and respect from people around the world than she ever imagined existed. Her friend Ann-Margaret helped her financially until Tina got her career back in order, since she left ike with 36 cents in her wallet. Her spirit drew all the right people to her, and the music she made after she left Ike is pure magic. Her legacy will live on forever.

This is one of the most inspirational books I've ever read. Highly recommended.

Hands down SIMPLY THE BEST autobiography of an entertainer I've ever read!! Words are not enough. This is a life-changer... and let me tell you, the movie does NO justice to the real story!!

Readers familiar with the writing of Connie Briscoe, Terry McMillan, andBe Be Campbell Moore will welcome Jacqueline Luckett to the world of African-American literature during a time when the most prolific and popular African-American secular authors write about drug dealers, drug addicts, criminals, con artists, and gold diggers. Like her predecessors, Ms.Luckett writes for and about that forgotten segment of the African-American community, the college educated, middle class professional.

Lena Spencer has put off her professional dreams for some thirty odd years to provide emotional and social support for her husband Randall as he climbed the ladder at TIDA, to raise the children and run the household. Now that the children are leaving home for college, Lena wants Randall to reciprocate with emotional support as she returns to school to update her photography skills in preparation to starting her own photography studio.After all, they had an agreement that Lena would hold off on starting her career while Randall built his. Lena is tired of waiting and is ready to begin filling her dream, but Randall is still actively building his career and wants Lena to go along with the roles that they have been playing for the past thirty years, with Lena serving as housewife and social hostess. Even though Randall has provided a life of luxury and security for Lena and the children, Lena is prepared to give it all up and start her life over on her terms much like her shero Tina Turner.

Housewives who interrupted or postponed their careers to raise families will relate to Lena's universal journey and may be encouraged to revive their deferred careers or hobbies. Women experiencing the "empty-nest syndrome" and those experiencing menopause will also relate to Lena as they too begin time and dreams slipping away.

Lena is the main character and the only fully developed character. We see all of the other characters through her eyes. We are privy only to Lena's inner thoughts. We learn enough about her husband and children to know that she feels unappreciated as well as unfulfilled creatively. While I would have liked to have shared some of Randall's inner thoughts, not having access to his thoughts did not detract from my enjoyment of Lena's passage from self-denial to self-actualization, from allowing circumstances decide her fate to determining her fate for herself.

Although the characters are African-American, Lena's plight is universal and the story can be enjoyed by everyone. The average middle class American will recognize families like the Spencers among their neighbors.


SEARCHING FOR TINA TURNER is an excellent debut effort. There is a neglected audience waiting for reading material that portrays African-Americans in a positive and relevant manner, Ms.Luckett has addressed that audience in a meaningful way.

Not an original premise or execution to say the least; a women finds herself after realizing money isn't everything. I had a low expectation of it going into reading it, so I think that's why I found it a pretty good read. If I was even hoping for something progressive or thought provoking, I wouldn't have been able to stand it.

The lead is empathetic and makes her situation bearable to read about. There is an aspect of generational/gender relations that the writer went into (although I don't know if it was intentional) that I found interesting and dynamic for a chick-lit book.

Stepping from Under the Shadows
Lately Lena is starting to identify with her mother, Lula. She's a stay-at-home mom responsible for providing everything to everyone with little to no room for self. In her mother's time that may have been acceptable, but nowadays, Lena is looking for a lot more.

When Randall, her husband, humiliates her in front of dinner guests and the children disrespect her, Lena decides to pack her bags and follow her dreams. Just as her idol, Tina Turner, she wants to turn her life around. Like Tina did, she wants to make her dreams come true. With the help of her sister, Bobbie, and her best friend, Cheryl, Lena is looking forward to change. Will Randall and the children prevent Lena from finally pursuing her dreams?

"Searching for Tina Turner" was a good read. I'm the same age as Lena, and I can definitely relate to and identify with her. It seems after living and doing so much for others, you get an itch to do something meaningful and exclusively for yourself.

"Searching for Tina Turner" is the familiar plot of a woman who seems to have it all.She has money, status, a successful husband and two great kids.Then, as no surprise to anyone reading this book, she realizes that after years of supporting her husband's career and being home to raise the kids, her life is just not complete for her and she can no longer pretend that it is.She wants to find herself.Throughout Lena's transformation back to her own self, she is empowered by watching Tina Turner on television and listening to her songs.

For anyone who has seen the movie "What's Love Got to Do with It" or read the autobiography "I, Tina," written by Tina Turner, there should be no surprise as to what the story is about and how it plays into the book.For those who haven't seen the movie or read the book, then I would recommend it only for the strong at heart as it is a bit disturbing.Similar to the Tina Turner story, I found this book a bit disturbing in that the protagonist seemed a bit too obsessed with Tina Turner.While the author had me on board the first half of "Searching for Tina Turner" with detailing Lena's life and her resentment towards her husband and ultimate divorce, I could not get into the remaining half of the book where Lena decides to fly to France just because Tina Turner lives there and she wants to see her.There was nothing there that I could draw from to connect with the character and that made the last part of the story difficult for me to get through.I would only recommend this book to women that perhaps are going through a similar situation as Lena and could perhaps want to understand how to draw out their strengths - minus the obsessive behavior.

She has it all, money, a beautiful house, 2 wonderful children, a loving husband, but Lena isn't happy.This is how her husband Randall and his friends see her life, truth is money cannot buy happiness.

Her husband is more concerned with his career and having a dutiful wife as he rises to be the first black CEO of his company.Her son has dropped out of college and has a drug habit, her daughter is sick of her name, extremely intelligent, and at the age of everyone's life should revolve around her.Lena has put her dream of becoming a photographer on hold time and time again, to be the wife she is expected to be.

Her husband gives her an ultimatum, live with it or get a divorce.Using the autobiography of Tina Turner, who Lena idolizes, for strength and wisdom, she opts for divorce and starts her life over.Friends take sides but her sister understands and sends her a plane ticket and tickets to a Tina Turner concert in Nice, France, which happens to be close to where Tina Turner has a home.Lena spends 3 weeks abroad hoping to meet Tina, but actually finding herself after 25 years of putting everyone else needs before her own.

While Lena's husband was never physically abusive like Ike was with Tina, the emotional abuse was truly there.I really came tohate the husband in this story, the daughter was just going through typical coming of age angst, but the son's drug abuse was a serious issue his father really didn't take seriously, so Lena had to handle it. Sadly there are many families going through the same issues in this world and fighting to hold it all together.I am glad Lena was able to stay true to herself and start to follow her dream.

This story is not a new one, but the time spent in France, the vivid description of the places, the people, the food and the wine, made you feel like you were actually there. The "snapshots" Lena was taking added so much vivid color to the story.You just knew she was going to survive her past and move on to her future. This really saved this book from being just another book about an unhappy marriage.

"The Most Honest Account of Someone's Life Story"
I have always loved and admired Tina Turner. Like many in my generation I first discovered Tina Turner in the mid-'80's when she released her "Private Dancer" album. Actually, it was around 1983 that I first saw Tina on television in Canada. She was in concert at some cabaret theatre in Ontario, and her performance was televised. I didn't know any of her hits, but what was remarkable to me, even as a teenager, was her raw energy and original voice. I fell in love with her and she quickly became one of only five people that I have ever idolized in my life. I wasn't surprised when she became an even bigger star the following year because I knew she had the will-power and the talent; that was all evident when I first saw her perform on TV.
I was really excited when her life story hit the big screen in 1993. Called "What's Love Got To Do With It?", the film is both mesmerizing and harrowing as Tina's life as a battered woman is told. I actually read the book after seeing the film. As bad as some of the graphic scenes in the film are, nothing prepared me for what I was to read in "I Tina". The movie only touches lightly on what she actually went through with Ike Turner. Yes he discovered her and gave her the name Tina Turner, but what Tina Turner endured for sixteen years was absolute hell. She suffered everything from broken ribs to a broken jaw, and one hellish night in Dallas Ike even shoved a lit cigarette up her nose. Thanks to her faith in God and her working with Buddhism, Tina got the strength and courage to leave this monster once and for all. The book details her turmultuous marriage to Turner, her rise to fame as part of the Ike and Tina duo, her separation from Ike, and ultimate rise to superstardom. "I Tina" is simply a must read; nothing like it has ever been in print before.

Proud Mary's "Cotton Country Roots" Makes Good
This is a hilariously funny, honest, tragic and moving autobiography. It possesses the same sass and zest as, Anna Mae Bullock's (aka Tina Turner) most famous hit "Proud Mary" does. It was so much better than the movie that I now wonder where the hell the scriptwriter's heads were when they turned this book into a movie? The movie should have been renamed "Ike the Impaler" rather then "What's Loves Got to do with it." It was more about Ike and his brutality, than it was about Tina. Tina's life was almost an after thought. There was a lot of "getting beat up," snorting cocaine, and butt shaking but not much of a story. Had the scriptwriters been "up to snuff," the movie version of Tina's autobiography should not have been just a crude statement about male brutality, but should have been art rivaling that of Ray Charles' movie, "Ray." Her story (with or without Ike's brutality) in the hands of a skilled screenwriter is at least as compelling and much more moving than that of Charles'.

The book however, is a very different matter, it is about Tina: Ike's portrayal although central to the story, is not the whole story. Tina's life was complex, morally dangerous, dense, layered, honest, and its subtext was always about how to survive in a dangerous challenging environment, and then about how to overcome a life of rejection, abandonment, poverty, discrimination, and male violence, and still accomplish ones dreams; and then get rich and get the hell out of America and move to the South of France as fast as possible.

Having similar roots as Tina - growing up on a farm in the segregated South, picking cotton, migrating to St. Louis, being "schooled" in the clubs and "haunts" of East St. Louis, etc. -- made Tina's story all the more personal. However, lacking an education, her life always existed on the edge of a slender thread. How many blacks, equally talented as she, peaked and were never to be heard from again? Even having her talent discovered was almost accidental. All she ever had to bring to the table was the truth of her soul as that was expressed through, not just her singing, but her voice. Her voice was her soul: the wind and the fire, not the sunshine, roses and daisies.

While Ike was "using Tina" to prove that he could be a "big time player," Tina was proving that she was a "force of nature," a phenomenon during times that called for a phenomenon rather than for players (whether "Big Time," or otherwise).She played her hand "just right," escaping Ike's clutches at the right time, gone! -- and never looked back!Amen.

The real tragedy of this story is Ike, who was destined to be a "small time hustler," because as talented as he was, he had no self-confidence, no self-trust, and he died with a tortured soul, as a small time hustler, only sampling the sweetness of life, while Tina is still savoring it in large gulps, in her mansion in the South of France. What a quintessentially American story!

Raw Talent At It's BEST!
Ms. Turner should be commended for opening up her heart, soul and past to all of her undying fans around the world.

Although the movie, "What's Love Got To Do With It" took many liberties in changing the original story for Hollywood purposes, the book and it's raw story-telling brings us right back to the innocent church girl being raised in Nut Bush.

Looking forward to a second book!
While I did not experience the '60s myself, this book was written in a manner that made me feel as though I could have.I found the Prologue intriguing, encouraging me to read more.The Introduction demonstrates the author's clarity and understanding of who he is as a person.The book provides details only someone who had these experiences could have written.A mix of humorous, serious, and unfortunately also tragic stories round out this book.I felt a heartfelt appreciation from the writer of having lived the life he did, being fortunate enough to have first-hand encounters with names such as Hendrix, Elvis, the Animals and Tina Turner.Overall, I found it enjoyable and look forward to reading more in a second book.

Amazing unique insight into some of music's greatest stars
As a long term fan of rock and soul music and especially Jimi Hendrix I was eagerly looking forward to this book and was not disappointed.

The book is completely full of great little anecdotes and stories - some are a different view on well known rock events (like Hendrix burning his guitar at Montreux, where Tappy was the person who handed him the lighter fuel!), others are enthralling accounts of spending time with some of the greatest musical acts such as John Lennon, Elvis, The Animals, Tina Turner, Little Richard and of course Jimi Hendrix.

It's important to view this book in the correct light - as I've come across some reviews that appear to have missed the point. This is not supposed to be some sort of great literary work of art looking for a Nobel prize for literature. Rather, it's an honestly written first person account of fascinating experiences with some of the world's greatest ever music stars.

For those of us who are really huge Jimi Hendrix fans there's something special in this book. I don't want to spoil it but let's just say you'll find out the real reason Hendrix parted with his manager Chas Chandler - and you'll also find out the incredibly explosive truth about how and why he died!

So, look beyond the writing style and the gratuitous sex and drugs (there's a lot of that ) and instead see, laid bare, the amazing life and times of someone who really was there at the birth of rock 'n' roll, through the 60s and 70s and who recounts everything from accompanying Hendrix on his first flamboyant shopping trips in Carnaby Street, to catching him in bed with Brigitte Bardot!

One other unique aspect to this book is the insight to one of the most secretive characters in rock - (aside perhaps from Elvis's manager The Colonel) Michael Jeffery. Tappy recounts working with Jefferey's through many projects and bands and sheds light on one the shadiest characters in the music business.

There's a treasure trove of amazing stories in this book - so enjoy it!

To be a fly on the wall
Awesome book and an great look into rock and roll history. What great memories good or bad. What a fabulous story life is, thanks for sharing it with the world.

On the right road but falls short
James (Tappy) Wright's autobiography, `Rock Roadie' covers the years up to 1973 and the death of Mike Jeffery, manager of The Animals and Jimi Hendrix.Wright provides some interesting insights into the pop music scene of the sixties through his work as a road manager with The Animals, Ike and Tina Turner, Peter Noone, Jimi Hendrix and even Jayne Mansfield and Perry Como. As a member of The Wildcats, with Hilton Valentine, Wright moved over to The Animals when Hilton was recruited as their lead guitarist. Since he had a van, Wright became the Animals roadie.He apparently played rhythm guitar on some of the tracks on The Animals first album as well. The book includes stories of some of the heavyweight managers of the era (Peter Grant, Don Arden and, of course, Mike Jeffery) and their organized crime undertones. It also presents a number of amusing anecdotes regarding the individual members of the original Animals and their rise to fame. Unfortunately, instead of providing much in-depth looks at the individuals, Wright takes the easy route of focussing on the groupies and sexual encounters of both his employers and himself.At times it becomes another book on the reminisces of a middle-age man (actually he becomes a senior citizen later this year) on getting laid when he was young. The inclusion of more detail on his relationships with his employers that did not just relate to sex would have been a welcome addition to the book.He has interesting stories about his encounters with Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Perry Como and Ike and Tina Turner that do not involve groupies and even some about The Animals but I would have liked to have read more of these.For instance, Wright didn't like Dave Rowberry who replaced Alan Price on keyboards in 1965. Rowberry apparently treated Wright like a roadie, instead of the sixth Animal, as he had become accustomed to being. Rowberry is therefore given about two paragraphs in the book.There is no mention of Barry Jenkins who replaced John Steel on drums in late 1965, although Wright does talk about the recording on the album, `Animalism', in Bermuda when Jenkins was in the group.
In the Forward to the book, the old cliché `If you remember the 60s then you weren't there' is brought up as a lead in to the fact that Wright's only vice was women, not drugs and booze, therefore he has a clear memory for the events of the decade. However, the book demonstrates a number of lapses in his memories of these years.The story of recording the television special, `The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood' with Liza Minnelli is placed in the discussion of events from 1964. Wright states that Sammy Davis Jr was the Big Bad Wolf and that he'd rant on about how these new groups were scruffy layabouts. The show was actually recorded in 1965 and the part of the Big Bad Wolf was played by Cyril Richard, the white, Australian-born actor, not Sammy Davis Jr.Also, according to Wright, in the fall of 1964, he accidently auditioned for The Monkees and met Jerry Lewis during his filming of `Three on a Couch'.The auditions for The Monkees were held in September 1965 while `Three on a Couch' came out in 1966, so Wright's memories are off by a year here.At the end of 1964, Wright tells a story about The Animals appearing on Ready Steady Go along with The Rolling Stones and a joke that Eric Burdon plays on Mick Jagger's girlfriend, Chrissie Shrimpton. Eric was caught up in the atmosphere of the groups playing live on the show, according to Wright.Actually, Ready Steady Go was still having groups mime to their songs until April 1965.Wright also presents some revisionist history in the book.More than four decades ago, in an interview in Eye magazine, he described the recording of `House of the Rising Sun' as The Animals entering the studio, setting up their equipment, doing a partial run-through of the song to set recording levels and then sending Wright out to buy milk for tea.When he returned a few minutes later, the song had been recorded in one take. The story now changes to the song being recorded later in the day, after most of the other tracks for the first album had been recorded and while the producer Mickie Most (not Mickey Most as incorrectly spelled throughout the book) is in the bathroom.
Criticizing these `lapses in memory' may seem like nit-picking, but they raise questions as to Wright's recollections of the two big events exposed in his book - Chas Chandler's resignation as Jimi Hendrix's producer during `Electric Ladyland' and Mike Jeffery's murder of Jimi Hendrix.Wright claims that Chandler quit as producer in the early months of 1968 at the same time that he separated from his wife, Lotta, whom he never spoke to again.However, the two had a son, Steffan, who was born in 1969 and according to some sources, did not divorce until 1977.It has also been written in other biographies of Hendrix that he visited Chas and Lotta the day before he died to see their son and to discuss Chas fixing up some recent tapes of his.Although the suggestion that Hendrix was murdered by Mike Jeffery is plausible, Wright could have strengthened his case by addressing the confusing statements in other books as to where Jeffery was at the time of Hendrix's death.Some say he was in Spain, others say he was briefly in England that week, looking for Hendrix.It is surprising to me that Wright makes no mention of any contact he had with Jeffery the day Hendrix dies.Jeffery was Wright's boss and you would think that Wright would be in contact with him that day.
In conclusion, I found `Rock Roadie' to be an easy read and it did add to my knowledge of The Animals and others from the 1960s. There are two main faults with the book, in my opinion. The first is its preoccupation with the sexploits of Wright and others at the expense of providing more insight into other aspects of the music scene (concerts, recording, interactions between groups) that Wright was so involved in during an important time in musical history.The second is the number of errors in dates and events that are distracting to students of musical history, question the accuracy of Wright's description of events, and lead one to call for better confirmation of Wright's statements on Chandler's resignation as Hendrix's manager and Jeffery's murder of Hendrix.I rate the book as more than three stars but less than four.

AWESOME BOOK
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. IT CONTINUES TO TELL TINA'S STORY AFTER THE PRIVATE DANCER YEARS UP UNTIL THE ON LAST TIME LIVE TOUR IN 2000. A++++

great data on Tina's recording career
If you want to know more about the private life of Tina Turner, buy "I, Tina" written by Tina Turner and Rolling Stone journalist Kurt Loder.
What makes this book great is the fact that it gives you a very detailed view of Tina's recording career and the chart positions her records achieved in the US and the UK charts.
Also a really great discography in the back of the book.
For someone more interested in her achievements instead of her private life, I think this is a great item to add to your Tina Turner collection.

NOT "SIMPLY THE BEST"
As a huge Tina fan, I became very excited when I heard about this book. Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to my expectations.

I think the main flaw lies with the author's research. It doesn't appear as if he interviewed Tina or anyone connected with her. If he had, it might have made a world of difference. The book seems to be a compilation gleaned from every other Tina bio that has been written. There is very little info that hasn't been printed before. Even worse, there are numerous incorrect facts. Most of which could have been fixed had the author done better research.

Case in point: the author states that after leaving Ike and starting her solo career, Tina never again performed the songs A FOOL IN LOVE and ITS GONNA WORK OUT FINE until they had to be re-recorded for her 1993 film biography. Not true. In a commercially-released concert home video from the late 70s, Tina indeed performs both of those songs, along with I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG (another song that the author claims Tina dropped after leaving Ike.)

For those who have not read any other bios on Tina, this is a good introduction and a quick read. But those who have closely followed Tina's life and career will be hard pressed to find anything new here. ... Read more

GREAT BOOK TO READ
THIS BOOK IS GREAT SIMPLY BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT TINA. THE AUTHOR TO ME SEEMS QUESTIONABLE ABOUT A FEW THINGS, BUT A GREAT READ FOR ANY TINA FAN.

Not sure how accurate this is
I am not sure if this author is telling the truth. I say that b/c when reading a caption of the book, i notice that he states that Tina asked to keep her stage name during the divorce.This is something that the movie "What's Love...?" showed.In reality, Tina Turner admits that she did not ask for this. She didn't care if she kept her stage name, all she wanted was her freedom. So I think the author isn't accurate. But it's still fun to read, but I don't take it seriously.

Fun to read even though many things are probably exagerated. But it's a good read for fans to realise that Tina Turner is just a human being as all of us with her flaws and with her merits and not the saint she is always portraied at in the Media.

Too Many Obvious Mistakes...
What's with all the errors in this book? Mr. Hampton is a wanna-be singer who is now just a washed up, drug addicted, drag queen trying to make a buck off of Tina Turner. At least that's what the book says. This book isn't worth purchasing.

A Good Read in spite of inaccuracies, won't win the Pulitzer
Some of the facts may not be right but Eddy dishes up some stuff that would cause any Tina fan to read the book cover to cover.Its like reading the Enquirer - read it just for fun - and fun it is.Don't take it seriously. One thing is undeniable, pictures don't lie. Tina looks like she was a real party girl in her old days.But weren't we all, so what. She still survives graciously and gets better even without the protection of her fans.She didn't need her fan's protection when Ike was pounding on her, so why does she need her fan's protecting her from this piece of prose -not necessary. If she was that upset about this book, I bet her management would have filed suit to have the book removed. Truth is its just more publicity.Most of us will never know the real Tina so this is just another "story" which is as good as any from someone who was closer to her than any of her fans could ever hope to be. And Tina fans - relax - Tina can take care of herself.She always has. And think of this, she may not even mind if Eddy made a little money from the book - I believe she is reported to be that generous! ... Read more

A dull description of a very dynamic individual
I fell in love with Tina Turner in the mid 1980's, shortly after her song, "Private Dancer" came out and it still remains my all-time favorite song. She was the sexiest, most dynamic female performer of her time and her songs contain a great deal of feeling and energy.
However, up until the time I read this book I had never delved a great deal into the details of her private life, always being content to be awed by per public persona. I knew that her experiences with Ike Turner were difficult and that she had suddenly left him, taking nothing with her.
This book is written very much in the tone of a publicist, there is little in the way of continuity; it has the feel of a series of press releases with some segments containing personal details inserted between them. The wording is laudatory when referring to Tina, negative in general to Ike and praising of those people that gave Tina's career a boost when she needed it. I still consider Tina Turner to be the greatest, reading this book did nothing to change that, but it never managed to reach the low bar of generating excitement in me about Tina Turner.
