Product Description
From her film debut as the sultry schemer in Body Heat to her award-winning role as Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, actress Kathleen Turner's unique blend of beauty, intelligence, and raw sexuality has driven her personal and professional life. Now, in this gutsy memoir, the screen icon tells us of the risks she's taken and the lessons she's learned-sometimes the hard way.

For the first time, Turner shares her childhood challenges-a life lived in countries around the world until her father, a State Department official whom she so admired, died suddenly when she was a teenager. She talks about her twenty year marriage, and why she and her husband recently separated, her close relationship with her daughter, her commitment to service, and how activism in controversial causes has bolstered her beliefs. And Turner reveals the pain and heartbreak of her struggle with rheumatoid arthritis, and how, in spite of it, she made a daring decision: to take a break from the movies and relaunch her stage career.

Along the way, Turner describes what it's like to work with legends like Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, William Hurt, Steve Martin, Francis Ford Coppola, John Huston, John Waters, Edward Albee...and, with characteristic irreverent humor, shares her behind-the-screen stories of dealing with all types of creative, intimidating, and inspiring characters.

Kathleen Turner has always known that she would play the lead in the story of her life. It's impossible not to take her lessons on living, love, and leading roles to heart. And it won't be long until you'll be sending yourself roses! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Awful
I am so sad to have read this book.I was such a huge Kathleen Turner fan.I've seen all of her movies and own quite a few so naturally I snapped this book up when I saw it.Big mistake. He ego is so out of control and she's so off-putting in this book and I don't care for her anymore. But the sad thing is it's its pretty clear she has zero self confidence and is overcompensating. She gives overcompensating a new meaning. Here's a couple stomach turning quotes:

"I was actually a lot better than almost everybody, but I didnt know that yet"

"While I was hearing from friends and professional colleagues day after day what an extraordinary talent I have and what an admirable person I am..."

The whole book goes on and on like that.I had to skip pages because they were so cringey.

I know autobiographies are about themselves and from their perspective but this was just plain painful to read.I've read many many autobiographies and have thoroughly them, but this was different. She refers to herself in the third person constantly and when she thinks she has said or done something witty, she calls it a "Turnerism"

She constantly refers to the reader as "Honey" or "Babe", while this could have been endearing from a book with the righ tone, from her it sounds phoney and annoying.

It kills me to even have to write these things about a woman I highly so admired at one time and who I have grown to loathe. Please skip this book, you will be disappointed if you are any kind of Kathleen Turner fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay.
I enjoyed Kathleen Turner's movies and I had wondered about her deteriorating health as she grew older and it saddened me to hear of it.She had a remarkable upbringing with living abroad. I found her to be funny and I really don't take too seriously her comments about herself as being self congratulating. She is examining her life and she is simply stating how she sees it.She HAS accomplished some remarkable work and the courage she displays in the face of RA is truly one of her most commendable virtues and is what I've taken away from this book as the most valuable lessons.

3-0 out of 5 stars Send Yourself Roses
I am a longtime fan of Ms. Turners work on screen and was anxious to read her autobiography; I'm not sure this was it. Her overly confident way of writing provides a lot of interesting details about her life as "she remembers" them.I found her behind the scenes stories about working with Hollywood legends particularly bold. Her battle with rheumatoid arthritis and alcoholism provide unexpected insight into her life as well. This book must have been very cathartic for Ms. Turner to write. Although entertaining, it did not read like an autobiography. But, it did provide some very "juicy" details about her Hollywood life © Bobskatie Enterprises for Amazon.com

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite a Disappointment
This was a disappointing book, full of self-congratulating praise. Kathleen calls herself sexy, an icon, beautiful, etc. over and over again and it becomes annoying and then finally ridiculous. In my opinion in her younger years she was certainly not what I would call unattractive, but my goodness, get over your appearance, Kathleen and move on to more important things. So much had been written in reference to her "beauty" instead of any substance.

When her daughter was rushed to the hospital for an incident by her mother-in-law who did not notify Kathleen (her daughter was okay) she practically knocked the mother-in-law out when she found out what had happened. I get the feeling that she is trying to convince the reader how wonderful a mother she was vs. one that would have to leave her family, even for a short while to make a film. Is it guilt she's dealing with? In this situation I felt Kathleen's behavior was excessive and over-the-top. I wanted to hear more about her battle with alcohol, but that wasn't covered at length. She mentioned it and then it was done with, but she went on at length about all her movies and performances, which is something a reader (this reader) may not really care much about. I wanted to hear more about her marriage, her husband, their life, but again, so much of the book was dedicated to her discussing her movie roles. She also discusses her voice at length, obviously feeling that her voice is quite special and worth lots and lots of attention in the book. Does anyone really care about a voice? Bottom-line is this book was not worth the time it took to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Send Yourself Roses by Kathleen Turner
The book was interesting and revealing of what Turner is like in real life. She is quite tough and out spoken.

She takes you behind the scenes of her movies to reveal interesting tidbits during each filming.Great stuff for movie lovers! She talks about her costars and their personalities. You feel like you are right there with them as they film each movie!

She gives a candid description of her RA and all that she had to indure from this disease. ... Read more

Product Description
The New York Times bestseller SEND YOURSELF ROSES is now in trade paperback.

Kathleen Turner has always lived her life according to her own rules. The screen icon opens up about her own life--both personal and professional--the risks she's taken, and the lessons she's learned from her film and stage career, 20-year marriage (and recent seperation), raising her daughter, and her successful struggle with rheumatoid arthritis.

In SEND YOURSELF ROSES Turner recounts why she took the roles she did--from her film debut as the sultry schemer in Body Heat to her subsequent craft-stretching roles in Peggy Sue Got Married (for which she received an Academy award nomination), Romancing the Stone, Prizzi's Honor, The War of the Roses, and Serial Mom. And she discusses her recent resurgence on the stage with Tony nominations in her roles as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate and as Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, for which she also won the a British Evening Standard Award. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and inspiring
Turner has long been one of my favorite stars. I love her sultry voice. Readers will recognize her from such movies as Romancing the Stone, the Graduate and Body Heat. She is known for both her sexy roles and comedy roles.

This account of her life is very upbeat focusing on the positive. Even when telling her battle with rheumatoid arthritis she stays positive.

Send Yourself Roses is well written and inspiring. ... Read more

Product Description
Now famous for their immediate impact of color, light, and atmospheric effect, the landscapes of Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) were at first the object of opposing critical claims: from one side the British artist was charged with painting "pictures of nothing and very like," from the other, with allowing too much "content" to eclipse his presentation of nature. Taking this paradox as its starting point, Kathleen Nicholson's richly illustrated book proposes a thorough revision of how we understand the enigmatic artist who revolutionized landscape painting. Advancing the growing interest in Turner's handling of content, without ignoring questions of style, Nicholson shows how Turner used the themes of antiquity to explore the ways natural imagery can embody meaning, and how he came to view interpretation itself as a primary subject. Nicholson maintains that by seeking themes in ancient myth, culture, and history, Turner was able to reinvest nature with new values and concepts, thereby accomplishing a genuinely modern revision of classical landscape in an early nineteenth-century idiom. His inquiry into the nature of meaning, she argues, led him to articulate a narrative that engaged the viewer in "reading" or interpreting both symbolic and purely visual imagery. Among the first to analyze systematically the themes treated in Turner's early sketchbooks, Nicholson traces the artist's understanding of a given legend, ancient author, or formal source as it developed over time, providing rare insight into the extent and character of his manipulation of subject matter. ... Product Description

During the past twenty years of intellectual boundary-crossing and widespread borrowing between fields, Turner's notions of "liminality" and the "processual" have been adopted by many theorists of art and society. This is the first volume to place individual Turner concepts into the context of his entire career and to spell out their implications for literary studies.

Product Description

The study of ecosystems, fundamental to ecology, has been complemented by the growing field of landscape ecology. Ecosystem Function in Heterogeneous Landscapes addresses how interactions among ecosystems affect the functioning of individual ecosystems and the larger landscape. This groundbreaking synthesis unites ecosystem ecology's knowledge of system function with landscape ecology's knowledge of spatial structure.

Practical concerns about scaling up from individual ecosystems to larger landscapes require an understanding of how networks of interacting ecosystems function together. The book elucidates the challenges faced by ecosystem scientists working in spatially heterogeneous systems, relevant conceptual approaches used in other disciplines and in different ecosystem types, and the importance of spatial heterogeneity in conservation resource management. The distinguished authors discuss how how much heterogeneity needs to be taken into account for specific types of scientific and management issues.  Their chapters cover the spectrum from proposing novel conceptual approaches to detailing the practical implications of heterogeneous landscapes for fire management, water management and conservation planning.

She came to fame during the 1980s, after roles in the Hollywood films Body Heat, Peggy Sue Got Married, Romancing the Stone, The War of the Roses, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Prizzi's Honor. She is currently guest starring in Californication on Showtime. Turner was born in Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of Patsy (née Magee) and Allen Richard Turner, a U.S. Foreign Service officer who grew up in China (where Turner's great-grandfather was a Methodist missionary). Her father, a diplomat, had been imprisoned by the Japanese for four years during the Second World War. As a child, Turner lived in Canada, Venezuela, the United Kingdom and was living in Cuba at the time Castro came to power. Turner has two brothers and a sister. While attending high school in London, she was a gymnast and also took classes at the Central School of Speech and Drama. In her early years, Turner was interested in performing. Her father did not encourage her: "My father was of missionary stock," she later explained, "so theater and acting were just one step up from being a streetwalker, you know? So when I was performing in school, he would drive my mom and sit in the car. She'd come out at intermissions and tell him, 'She's doing very well.'"
