Newton was as a spiritual father to Thomas Scott (1747-1821) and Richard Cecil (1748-1810) and they in turn were the spiritual guides to Daniel Wilson (1778-1858). Wilson launched a missionary emphasis still seen today in Oxford churches.

What this book helps us understand is that the situation that prevailed when these men influenced their society is similar to that of today. If we want to change the world then their stories could inspire us to do just that.

A Lifetime In 17 Years
It's eleven years after Columbine, and we're still talking about Rachel Scott.

Rachel Smiles
Rachel Joy Scott was a 17-year-old girl from Columbine High School. She was one of the 13 people killed in a tragic killing spree on April 20th, 1999. It is told that Rachel was a sweet soul, just trying to make a differnce in the world...that, she did.

Rachel Smiles is the 3rd book of a 3 book series. It waswritten by Darrell Scott with Steve Rabey. It tells stories of peoples' lives which Rachel has been a part of and touched.

One very interesting thing happend to Rachel's family, and Darrell talks about it in this book, is a dream that a man named Frank Amedia had. Frank was a total stranger to the Scott family. He lived in Ohio,and he had watched Rachel's funeral on CNN. He called Darrell, and wanted to know if he knew anything about his dream. The dream was a vision of Rachel's eyes crying a stream of tears. The tears were watering something, but Frank didn't know what. Darrell said he didn't know what the dream meant. About a week later, the police station called to say that the Scotts could pick up Rachel's backpack, which was being hed as evidence. As Rachel's family went through her bag, they found Rachel's latest journal, with a bullet hole through it. The last entry was put in 15 minutes before Rachel Scott was murdered. It was a drawing of eyes crying 13 tears (the number of people killed that day) watering a columbine flower, that was dripping blood. Mr. Scott immediately thought of Frank Amedia.

Personally, I think Rachel Smiles is a great book. After reading it, I feel like I know Rachel Scott. It's an uplifting, non-fiction book, that seems to pull you in as you read. Excellent Book On Rachel's Impact
I think that this is an excellent and touching book about the impact of Rachel's life and of her beliefs. I don't agree with certain things that was said in the book(specicially about Eric and Dylan and their impact[as someone who looked into what happened extensively, their impact is more than Rachel's father says, or more accurately, does not say, in the book]), but I think that it's a great book for anyone who wants to know about Rachel's impact and legacy.

Rachel Smiles Extraordinary
From the author of the best-seller "Rachel's Tears" comes a book not about the life of Rachel Scott, but about the lives her story has changed. It isn't surprising that this book is touching and impactful. Rachel Scott's dad is a wonderful writer, and the other books her family has written are just as touching and impactful. Although I was not featured in the book, it was totally inspiring and encouraging to hear how other people were touched by her as well. _Anthony Horneck (1641-1697) is a key figure for the migration of the continental Pietist sensibilities into Restoration Anglicanism and ultimately into Methodism. Horneck was educated at Heidelberg and Leiden and then immigrated to England during the year of the Restoration. In England he became a committed Anglican, but his life and ministry demonstrated the influences of developing continental Pietism. He preached salvation. He avoided disputes over non-essentials. Most significantly, he organized religious societies of awakened souls beginning in 1678. The rules Horneck drew up for the guidance of these societies bear many marks of continental Pietism and laid the foundation for philanthropic and revivalist movements in England. At Horneck's death there were a number of these religious societies in and around London. In the next twenty years they expanded in London and throughout the counties, profoundly impacting Anglican piety. Step Right In and Come of Age in the Early Twentieth Century
[...]This little book of eight short stories took me about a week to read, and now I'm very sorry that it's over. All of the stories were very entertaining and vivid. In between reading it, I would feel I was a nineteen-year-old girl in the first or second decade of the twentieth century. Many of the stories in this book are focused on girls of that age, and I thought it was quite strange that Fitzgerald could write so well about them. Almost all of the stories can be classified as "coming of age" stories in the early twentieth century.


The book starts off with a strong and rebellious nineteen-year-old girl in "The Offshore Pirate." That first story was probably my favorite. My second favorite was probably "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," which was also about a nineteen-year-old who was figuring herself out a lot more than the heroine from the first story, who knew exactly who she was and what she wanted. I also liked "The Ice Palace" in which a very vivacious teenager named Sally Carroll visits a Northeastern city in the hopes of marrying, and finds out that she misses the colorful southern town where she grew up.


The last story in the collection, "The Four Fists," features a manly man who gets knocked down by four punches in his lifetime, each of which teaches him an important lesson, and the story takes him from New York to the oil fields of Texas and the ranches of New Mexico. It's rather refreshing to read a burly story after all the quite feminine ones, but I truly liked them all. The second-to-last story, "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," also features a male character and his descent into shadiness. What I noticed is how differently Fitzgerald writes about male characters than female characters - there's less internal monologue and descriptions of thoughts and conversations, and more action at a swiftly moving pace. One story, "Head and Shoulders" does a beautiful job of explaining a role reversal of sorts, in which the female character shines and the male character withers.


To read this book was to be transported back to a totally different time - anywhere from the 1890's to the 19-teens, and to totally different places - usually New England towns, Ivy League educational institutions, and country clubs. I enjoyed the scenes about fox trots and flappers and jazz music and I wished, sometimes, that I could have lived back then. But Fitzgerald had great sympathy for his female characters - "The Cut-Glass Bowl" featured a downfall of one of them, and the strong character of Marjorie in "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" explains how they can become withered and unloved housewives, many of whom are disapprovingly interspersed into that story.


In fact, if I carry one thing away from Flappers and Philosophers other than hours of entertaining reading, it is a remark on the position of young women in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The stories feature girls at the cusp of womanhood who wear rose-tinted glasses and think that life is about dances and social events. Yet the men are the ones getting an education, seeing the world and taking part in all of the action (again with the exception of the uniquely witty "Heads and Shoulders" plot). In this sense I am very happy to be living in the 21st century and just reading about these female characters in the early 20th century.
