Editorial Review Product Description Pilot's schizophrenia is all the more poignant contrasted with the poise of his older brother Eric, a prominent neurosurgeon. Eric is the one who comes to his mother's rescue when she is stranded on the highway, unable to see to drive home after Pilot's attempt to help her devolves into a terrifying, emotional paralysis: The novel's strength lies in the deftness with which author Peter Moore Smith captures Pilot's schizophrenia. The reader follows Pilot in each unsteady attempt to negotiate the ever-fluctuating boundary between reality and illusion: "Eyes closed, I was in a bed upstairs, my arms under the covers so they wouldn't float away. Outside the window a single branch was reaching toward the room, unfurling itself to tap against the glass, warning me."Raveling weaves the fragile threads that bind families and selves into a tapestry that both cloaks its characters and leaves them starkly vulnerable. --Kelly Flynn Customer Reviews (54)

Editorial Review Product Description What we know of that unique period in American history labeled the Jazz Age has been defined by F. Scott Fitzgerald's piercing fiction. His short stories brilliantlyrealize an era both exploding with opportunity and seething with decadence. His prose captures the melancholy lacquered over with merriment, the corruption interlaced with the glamour, all refracted through a spectrum of human lives. Here, Caedmon has assembled an extraordinary cast of stage and screen stars to bring Fitzgerald's early work to resonant life. His characters (some passionate, some comic, some tragic) take on an extra dimension when interpreted aloud by these fine actors. This collection both honors and enhances Fitzgerald's already irreplaceable position in American letters. Each return listening will bring even more emotional impact to each story. I love this man's work!
I could listen to this over and over
AN EXEMPLARY COLLECTION SUPERBLY READ Collected in this superb audio are nine of his early stories performed by accomplished actors.Broadway/film actress Blythe Danner reads "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," a narrative inspired by a lengthy letter Fitzgerald wrote to his younger sister, Annabel, in which he offered advice on how she could become popular with boys. "The Jelly-Bean," read by Dylan Baker, takes place in Georgia.Fitzgerald credits his wife for her expertise in helping him write a portion of this tale involving crap shooting, saying "as a Southern girl" she was an expert at this endeavor. The talented Peter Gallagher reads "Head and Shoulders," the first of Fitzgerald's story to appear in The Saturday Evening Post. Also found in the collection are "The Diamond As Big As The Ritz," "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," "The Ice Palace," "Benediction," "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button," and "May Day." This is an exemplary combination of memorable prose and oral presentation, a remarkable listening experience. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Despite its remote location in the Nevada desert, the Utopia theme park receives 65,000 visitors daily. They never dream their lives may be in any real danger. However, some of the self-programming robots are becoming erratic, so park administrators quietly bring the robots' brilliant creator from the East Coast to fix the problem before it gets any worse. Dr. Andrew Warne brings his daughter, for he doesn't believe there is anything wrong with his creations. But on the day of their arrival, a mysterious band of ruthless criminals infiltrates not only the park, but its computerized systems. The unknown terrorists appear to control everything, from the simplest robot to the most dangerous ride. And if their demands aren't met, thousands of innocent park-goers will be killed. --Cynthia Ward Customer Reviews (103)

Editorial Review Product Description In 1998, Andrew Carroll founded the Legacy Project with the goal of remembering Americans who have served this nation and preserving their letters for posterity. Since then, more than 50,000 war letters discovered in basements, attics, scrapbooks, and old trunks have poured in from around the country. The best of these letters are assembled in this extraordinary collection, offering unprecedented insight into the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War, the Persian Gulf, and even the fighting in Somalia and the Balkans. Featured here are dramatic accounts of combat written immediately after the most ferocious battles American troops have ever faced; poignant expressions of love by homesick husbands and sweethearts; humorous anecdotes and gripes about insufferable conditions; thoughtful reflections on the nature of warfare; and perhaps most devastating, a startling number of last letters, heartfelt messages penned just hours before the sender was killed. These historic letters capture the full fury and intensity of warfare, and they reveal in vivid detail what the servicemen and women of this nation have experienced and sacrificed on the front lines. War Letters is a lasting tribute to those who have fought for this country, and celebrates the enduring power and lyricism of personal letters. While the letters are not unrelentingly grim, there is ample description ofthe rending agonies of war and the pain of separation. For instance, arecounting of horrors found in a Nazi concentration camp, or a tenderletter to a just-born daughter who may never be seen. Private First ClassRichard King describes the death of a Catholic chaplain blessing thefoxholes: "An artillery shell cut him in half at the waist." Staff SergeantJoe Sammarco tells how he crawled, wounded, across streams and into hillsin order to escape the Chinese, propelled by the thought of his wife andhis babies. Many of these are "last letters," often received after the newsof the writer's death. Lieutenant Tommie Kennedy, a POW on a Japanese "hellship," wrote his farewells on the only thing he had--the back of two familyphotographs, which were smuggled back to his parents. These are, as Carroll writes, "the first, unfiltered drafts of history."His rich sample testifies to the universal and poignant themes of love andhonor, courage and rage, duty and fear and mortality. The playful andheartfelt voices grant us the personal perspective all too often lost innews reports and government statements. Taken together, they remind usthat, despite the playful good cheer, the human cost of war is far toohigh. A remarkable contribution to the understanding of war and its impact, and a powerful tribute to those undone by it. --Lesley Reed Customer Reviews (37)

Editorial Review Product Description From one of America's most acclaimed biographers, here at last is the definitive life of one of the most legendary, controversial, and enigmatic figures in American history - Charles A. Lindbergh. National Book Award winner A. Scott Berg is the first and only writer to have been given unrestricted access to the massive Lindbergh archives - more than two thousand boxes of personal papers, including reams of unpublished letters and diaries - and to be allowed to freely interview Lindbergh's friends, colleagues, and family members, including his children and his widow, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The result is a brilliant biography that clarifies a life long blurred by myth and half-truth. From the moment he landed in Paris on May 21, 1927, Lindbergh found himself thrust upon an odyssey for which he was ill prepared - the first modern media superstar, defied and demonized many times over in a single lifetime.Berg casts dramatic new light on Lindbergh's childhood; his astonishing flight; the kidnapping of his son, which has been called "The Crime of the Century;" Lindbergh's fascination with Hitler's Germany; and his unsung work in his later years. In all, this is a most compelling story of a most significant life: the most private of public figures finally revealed with a sweep and detail never before possible. This is at once Lindbergh the hero and Lindbergh the man.
