Product Description
"We are professionals. Though not specifically professionals in the field of 'psychology' or 'psychiatry,' we are both highly paid actors and comedians, and as such know more about neuroses than you could possibly imagine. . . ."

If you're tired of following the rules, dating people from Mars and Venus, gorging on chicken soup for your soul, or getting lost on a road less traveled, then it's time you listened to Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo, two people who actually sweat the small stuff . . . because, let's face it, if your body doesn't sweat, it dies--much like Ben and Janeane's train wreck of a relationship many years ago. From that experience came wisdom and self-reproachment. Now, in Feel This Book, they tackle the tough questions:

- Is love necessary?
- How can I make money off my spouse?
- Compassion--is it overrated?
- Why can't I sleep around and still love you?
- How many times have you told your significant other that you would pick up something for dinner on your way home from the office, and next thing you knew you're at an all-night eatery with some hermaphrodite you found on the strip, having eggs and bacon at three in the morning?

Through helpful tips, completely fabricated case studies, the six laws of spiritual success, the fourteen by-laws of spiritual awakening, and the twenty-three addendums and sub-laws regarding anything spiritual and successful, Stiller and Garofalo teach such valuable lessons as:

- When it comes to family, grasp onto the blame and don't let go
- Make the connection . . . between Deepak and Tupac
- Your mother lied; looks are everything, and the sooner you submit and stop denying the inevitable, the happier you will be
- And much more!

Feel This Book. Let it be your path, your compass, your sensible shoes, your Frappuccino®. It's what self-help was meant to be.

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
A warning to readers: though Ben Stiller (Flirting withDisaster) and Janeane Garofalo (The Truth About Cats andDogs) used to be a couple, do not confuse their advice book withChicken Soup for theCouple's Soul. This is more of a cross between James Thurberand E.B. White's satirical Is Sex Necessary? and MTV's Beavis andButt-Head: Chicken Soup for the Butt.

The ex-couple give us alternating chapters of remarkably rambling, extravagantly ironic, showbiz-insider's philosophical musings, butthey do discuss their actual relationship, just to let you know wherethey stand--right on your funny bone, exerting maximum pressure untilyou beg for mercy. After their breakup, writes Garofalo, "We agreedthat in the future we would only meet for professional purposes, or ifwe were drunk and felt like having emotionally destructive sex."

This faux tome (also read by the authors on audiocassette) is ameeting of the minds for professional purposes. But again, don't befooled by what these wily authors say! The intriguing chaptersreferred to in the opening pages--"Why Can't I Sleep Around and StillLove You?"; "How to Fake an Orgasm to Show Your Love, or The Art ofthe Squeal"; "Negotiating with God for What You Want--and GettingIt!"; "Pros and (Very Few) Cons of a Third Party in theBedroom"--these chapters do not in fact exist! What does existis a dog's breakfast of jokes from a pair of clowns. Read it and weep, but heed it at your peril. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Book review
The book was in excellent condiiton. It looked practically new. The book is hilarious. Its a dark comedy a lot of sarcasm and wittiness. So if you enjoy that, this is a book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars A badly written, lazy piece of writing....inexcusable in my opinion...
I paged through this thing while hanging out at a Borders, and it was pretty awful. It seemed like it was written in a day or two, and as some have said, it was probably done just to make some extra cash.Janeane had said in an interview that she didn't really want to do it (there has been tension between her and Stiller for years, recently saying in another interview he tried to get her fired off of Reality Bites), and that her and Ben didn't actually write it together. They wrote their pieces seperately, and sent it to the editors, who tried to make sense out of it.It is a haphazard, lazy outing, and you're better off not reading this tripe at all.Considering Janeane is very articulate and well read, I thought she would be a good writer. She probably is, but working with Stiller probably dumbed her writing down.Stiller may be good at playing neurotic, nerdy characters that make fools of themselves, but he's a rather smug person (a typical Gen X type), and here he shows that's he's a terrible writer.I was never a huge fan of his, and here he just confirms my dislike. If you really want to read something from Janeane, google her numerous interviews (she's done TONS of them, probably the most of any minor celebrity ever). They're better than this "book".The fact that this book is selling used for a penny shows that people aren't as dumb as Ben and Janeane thought they were (or the publishers) when they tried to pass off this crap.

3-0 out of 5 stars A recommendation from the Washington Post
From The Washington Post, 'The Tortured Lives of Interrogators,' June 4 2007.

"Not long ago in Iraq, he felt "absolute power," he said, over men kept in cages. Lagouranis had forced a grandfather to kneel all night in the cold and bombarded others in metal shipping containers with the tape of the self-help parody "Feel This Book: An Essential Guide to Self-Empowerment, Spiritual Supremacy, and Sexual Satisfaction," by comedians Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo. ("They hated it," Lagouranis recalled. "Like, 'Please! Just stop that voice!' ") "

Boy, is that some kind of plug...

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbearable
A few of Janeane's chapters have one or two funny moments, but Ben Stiller's are not to be borne.

Almost nothing that Stiller writes has any laughs whatsoever.Even as parody, something should provoke a laugh or a smile.

Awful!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a duo.
A laugh riot! Me and my brother read this and couldn't stop laughing. A must-read! ... Read more

Product Description
Ben Stiller grew up watching his parents on television. The world of show business was the only world Ben knew. The second child of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, Ben had entertainment in his blood. But when Ben wanted to enter the business himself, it was not as easy as it might have looked. Even with experienced show business parents, Ben struggled to find his niche. He started out wanting to make his own films, but found that enrolling in film school felt like a waste of time. With his mother’s help, he got an audition for a Broadway play, and from there got small parts in movies. It was not until his part in There’s Something About Mary and then Meet the Parents that Ben found his own success in the field. ... Read more

Product Description
Loved, hated, revered, scorned, real, imagined: this is Los Angeles. Looking at Los Angeles is a fascinating journey into the center of the city's heart and soul. Pictured within its pages is a Los Angeles of powerful dreams and startling realities. Editors Marla Hamburg Kennedy and Ben Stiller have gathered pictorial representations of Los Angeles from the last three-quarters of a century, resulting in this selection of more than 200 stunning, beautifully reproduced color and duotone depictions of the city from different eras and different points of view. Along with the carefully chosen images by approximately 100 photographers who have time again turned to Los Angeles for inspiration, a preface and foreword by the editors describe their great affection for the city, while David L. Ulin's essay offers a critical and loving look at Los Angeles. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Los Angeles Conservancy, and the organization provides an essay about the importance of saving this city's rich architectural heritage.

Looking at Los Angeles is at once a lesson in history, architecture, style, and culture, and a remarkable visual and written tribute to one of America's greatest cities. Includes photographs by: Robert Adams, John Baldessari, William Claxton, Will Connell,Joe Deal, John Divola, William Eggleston, Sam Fentress, Anthony Friedkin, John Humble, Dennis Keeley, Florian Maier-Aichen, Grant Mudford, Karin A. Mueller, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore, Julius Schulman, Joel Sternfeld, Timothy Street-Porter, John Swope,Andy Warhol, Julian Wasser, Robert Weingarten, Garry Winogrand, Max Yavno, and others.L.A. is a city not easily categorized (though easily maligned), and these artists have captured its complex strata--the surreal urban nightmare, the endless expanse of surburbia, and the oasis of palm trees and beach. Truly and inarguably, Los Angeles is a place of paradox, of complexity and contradiction. It is one of the world's greatest metropolises, and it is unique.Edited by Marla Kennedy and Ben Stiller, with Jane Brown and Craig Krull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, real-life photos of LA in a great, coffee table format!
This book is great as a gift, eye-candy, or a conversation starter for anyone living in greater LA.The format is large and allows the photos to draw you in.It's no glizt, all the real deal photography of true LA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really excellent
Beautiful images. The thing I like most about this book is it photographs a number of different elements; the city, landscapes, areas, iconic buildings, etc.Another well known L.A. photography book "Los Angeles Deluxe" while beautiful and also fantastic, does tend to focus more on architecture and shots of buildings. While there are some beautiful buildings in L.A., "Looking at Los Angeles" covers everything from famous shots of the landscapes, beaches, mountains, as well as the buildings and iconic tourist destinations of the city.

The images themselves are also of the highest quality (I have to wash my hands everytime I pick this book up to read it!It is so glossy and given the quality of the images I couldn't bear to have any stains even on the edges!)This book really is a labour of love for all those who participated in its creation.

The only minor negative I would note is in agreement with one of the reviewers below who note that you do have to turn to the back of the book every page to see where/when the photo was taken (at the index - the image descriptions are not contained together with the images but rather in the last few pages of this very large book).Given 'Looking at Los Angeles' is indeed a large/heavy book, this can be a little cumbersome sometimes. Then again, on the other hand the images are so beautiful that to have a brand 'new' page after every image to introduce a description of the next one would have probably disrupted the flow and beauty of the images so, not really a negative but just a point to note.

4.5 stars for me and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who love LA
This book is a treasure for LA lovers. It accomplishes the formidable task of reflecting both the outer and inner layers of this beautiful, complex city.

The copy and photography complement each other elegantly and thoughtfully in this great tribute to a wonderful city.

It is a must-have for anyone who loves Los Angeles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stretch city
How do you photographically sum a city like Los Angeles? The editors of this sumptuous coffee-table book give it a go and I think succeed, just look at the names in the Book Description above.Eighty-eight photographers in all and some I've never heard of but their 225 images do give a feel of this extraordinary endless place.Look through the pages and the only conclusion is that this must be Los Angeles.

The book is loosely divided into themes: freeways and autos, shops, buildings, suburbs, signs, vegetation, swimming pools, beach and the last section LA at night.Julius Shulman with fourteen photos rightly has the most.No other photographer captured the range and style of LA contemporary architecture over the decades. His well-known night photo of Pierre Koenig's Case Study home is included.Another famous photo is Stephen Shore's stunning 'Beverley Blvd and La Brea Avenue'.Other photos just stop you like Michael Light's aerial freeway shot on page forty-three or John Divola's '5800 South block of Hoover Street' which opens up to an image just over twenty-seven inches wide on pages seventy-seven and eight. However, as far as I can see there is nothing to represent NWA-land: Compton or Watts.

The photos (in 175dpi) are impressively large and mostly one to a page and more or less split equally between color and black and white. There is though an annoying fault with the production - so four stars - the captions are all at the back making the reader to constantly keep turning the pages to find out about a photographer and their work. Most pages have plenty of space for a caption. There is an extra wrinkle unfortunately because many pages have no numbers either: 56 to 61, 156 to 161, 172 to 189 and in the night section nothing between 200 and 225. It must have been amateur night at the publishers and it really is inexcusable for an expensive book!

Jewish achievement in the sciences? Celebrated.Jews in literature?Lionized. 5-0 out of 5 stars best b'nai mitzvah gift! Jews Who Rock
finally found a great B'nai mitzvah book that all kids like. This little book is really packed with info on famous musicians who happen to be Jewish. Our whole family enjoyed it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed-Up Confusion!
After having received this book as a gift, one wonders how much griping is allowable.Nonetheless, after having skimmed through the book and after having read the entry on Bob Dylan, it gave me good pause.Since there were multiple errors on Dylan's one page, it naturally made me ask the question, "How many other errors might abound?"I am not proposing that the book should be error-free (no book is), but after having read some of the reviews, it's clear that someone should take the responsibility (Guy Oseary? or maybe his editor or researcher? or maybe the publisher?) for the many errors that fill its pages.

I'll simply point out the errors on the Dylan page. The singer did not graduate from the University of Minnesota in 1959 (nor any other university). He graduated from his high school, Hibbing High, in 1959, and then merely attended the Univ. of Minn. for a few semesters. And Dylan's second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" didn't come out in 1962 (it was 1963).Additionally, to say Dylan's songs "extolled the use of certain drugs" and to use "Rainy Day Women #12&35" as an example ("everybody must get stoned"), oversimplifies things; the lyrics to this song are actually quite rich (despite them being made almost cliche because of radio overplay and overplay in concert) but Dylan has denied--on more than one occasion--writing "drug songs."In one interview he mentioned it was hard enough to write songs without making it harder [through drugs].

After referencing the 1966 era, we're then told that Dylan "toured and recorded tirelessly" for the next 30 years.Really? Most fans will vividly recall when Dylan did not embark on a single tour from 1967-1973; he also abstained from touring in 1977, 1982-1983 and 1985.

And the "Never-Ending Tour" is listed as "1988-1996" which is odd.Dylan's touring didn't stop in 1996 (this book was published in 2001), it has continued to this day, i.e., "1988-2002."

As for the book's statement that "Bob took his adopted name from poet Dylan Thomas," this too isn't factual.Dylan has denied this on a number of occasions and others close to Dylan have corroborated his denial although the exact origins of the name are not entirely clear (typical Dylan).

We are also informed that Dylan was involved with the Lubavitch movement in Jerusalem in 1984.But this is the wrong location, and year.He studied with the Lubavitchers in Brooklyn in 1983.

And then there's the matter-of-fact statement that Dylan "explored various religions outside of Judaism, to which he ultimately returned."In 1979-1981, Dylan did more than "explore" Jesus (and he still sings about Jesus, for whatever reason, to this day).He also has never announced his departure from or return to Judaism. In typical contrarion fashion, Dylan quoted a biblical passage from the Hebrew Scriptures on his 1980 album, "Saved."And then in 1984, the year after he studied with the Lubavitchers, Dylan was asked if he thought the Old and New Testaments were equally valid. He replied, "To me." (Rolling Stone interview with Kurt Loder).Dylan has participated in the Lubavitchers' Chabad telethons (1986, 1989 & 1991) but has also continued to sing songs from the "Slow Train/Saved."

Even with all the religion hububb aside, it seems that for all I've pointed out it could've been a case of my having scoured through a full-length book...but it was, again, only a one-page entry on Dylan! And there were many errors, so buyer beware.

Maybe one day we'll have an updated, mostly corrected edition and some quotes from the artists on the significance of their rich cultural heritage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Iggy isn't Jewish.
I have not read the book. I leafed through it in a book store. What can I add that others haven't already said. The one page bios are superficial and there are many mistakes and omissions.

I response to the reviewer who said that Iggy is Jewish. Well he isn't.I read his autobiography about 12 years ago.I think he said his father was an orphan who had been adopted by a non-practicing Jewish family. But he wasn't brought up Jewish. Iggy isn't Jewish by decent, upbringing or in any other way except in name (James Newell OSTERBERG) You can hear various anti-Semitic remarks in live and `unofficial' recordings of the Stooges.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sparse
This book has short profiles of Jews in rock n roll. One reviewer accurately set forth many serious omissions including two great Jays, Jay Segal of the Tokens and Jay Black of Jay and the Americans. I also noticed that the great producer for Atlantic Records, Jerry Wexler was not listed. This book includes very short profiles with little substance. Therefore, this book is not much more than a list.

I found a profile of Carny Wilson interesting in which the author stated she is Jewish on her father's side. Really? Since when is Brian Wilson of the Beachboys Jewish??Also, people who have some Jewish blood from their father's side but never lived as Jews are included so, the definition of a Jew is stretched. The book was a good idea but, it just doesn't cut it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really?
Including Kenny G, Michael Bolton, and Neil Diamond in a book called "Jews Who Rock" only confirms that Jews have an elevated sense of humor.

This book should be titled "Jews Who Changed Names and Then Tried To Rock and Occasionally Succeeded."

I would have given this book 2 stars if it hadn't let me know that Gene Simmons real name is Chaim Witz. Wow. ... Read more
