Disappointed with Earth Book
I am a big fan of the Daily Show and Jon Stewart, therefore I quickly bought the Earth Book.It didn't strike me as funny, but the same humor as a 10 year old.Not up to his usual humor.

Great book crappy gift wrapping.
I got this book as a gift for my gf. I ordered it gift wrapped to save a step. The wrapping and ribbon are nice except that you can see through the wrapping paper. You can clearly see the title through the paper. What is the point in wrapping a gift when you can clearly see what it is? There is no point. I hope the butt head at amazon who wrapped this book reads this. Otherwise, it got here on time.

Pretty freakin' Funny
I especially like the quality of the print... full color etc. The book is in mostly bite-sized humor that I can digest at random (before bed, on the toilet, on the train, etc). This was the first John Steward book I've ever bought, but it probably won't be the last.

disappointed alley
This is the worse book ever concieved. It never brought a smile, forgetlaughter.

Not as good as it looks
I saw Jon Stewart advertize his new book on TV so I thought I read his previous one, America, Teacher's Edition.
Well, it's a supposedly funny explanation of how America (supposed to!) work. I has some stuff in it that makes you smile a little, but overall, it's rather forced humour, with rather silly comments.
I bought my copy on Amazon for a few dollars-it's worth it-but don't spend any more money on it!!

Audiobook Review
The audio book version of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book) Teacher's Edition: A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction is just as funny as the print version (which I also own).It is unfortunate that it is abridged (though a lot of the humor in the print version is visual, which obviously doesn't translate to the audio version).

My favorite aspect of the audio book is that it is read by The Daily Show team.Jon Stewart does the bulk of the reading, but most of the other members of his "news team" (Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, etc.) have their own sections.It really helps this feel like a legitimate version of their book, not just an afterthought.They also mention that it is an audio book a few times (Jon Stewart begins by welcoming us "non-readers"), which also helps make it feel like its own product.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is abridged (I don't know how much was cut out).The audio book lasts only 3 1/2 hours.I wanted more.

My first review
I'm a big fan of the show, so when I saw this book by Jon Stewart I had to buy it even though I am not American and figured I would be lost during most of it. Jon and his fellow writters do such a good job in making all of their factoids funny and interesting. Although informative, this was by far one of the best history books I have ever read. I read it from cover to cover and ended up buying Colbert's book after I read it just to get more of the same.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a chuckle and also looking for a smart, informative read.

Just like the TV Show
I love the Daily Show and so I decided to get the book by the very same people responsible for giving us our nightly dose of political satire.It's certainly funny and engaging.What makes it even funnier is the notes left by an actual professor who went through the book, line by line.His comments/criticism/observations are hilarious.It made the book so much more enjoyable.So basically if you like the TV Show, you'll definitely like this book. ... The protean Hegel
"Hegel Myths and Legends" is an anthology defending Hegel against accusations that he was a totalitarian obscurantist and proto-Nazi who divinized the state, glorified war and supported German nationalism. In the Anglo-Saxon world, these accusations are mostly associated with Karl Popper. Other claims about Hegel the editors believe are incorrect include his supposed belief in "the end of history", the dialectical schema thesis-antithesis-synthesis, and his attempt to prove that there could only be seven planets (I never heard that one before). A legend not mentioned in the book is the claim that Hegel was an occultist and Rosicrucian.

I admit that I haven't studied the issue sufficiently to judge whether "Hegel Myths and Legends" is true, false or falls somewhere in between. Several of the contributors admit that Hegel's philosophy has been used by virtually all political groups, and even some Christian theologians, to justify their own pet ideas. Hegelianism, it seems, has a protean quality. Apart from right-Hegelians and left-Hegelians, there were also centrist Hegelians. It seems that the editors and contributors to this volume want to see Hegel in a centrist light. Thus, they claim that Hegel favoured a constitutional monarchy and moderately liberal democracy, that he attempted to stay clear of both the Holy Alliance and the radical opposition in Prussia, that his ideas about "the real being the rational" have been torn out of context, etc. They also claim that Hegel was an abolitionist.

Curiously, the anthology also contain a text denying that Hegel was an enlightenment philosopher, instead connecting him to the "irrationalist" stream within European philosophy. The author seems to think that this is something positive!

The most sensational text in this collection claims that the dialectical triad thesis-antithesis-synthesis cannot be found in Hegel, but comes from an erroneous interpretation by an otherwise unknown Kantian scholar, a certain Chalybäus. Apparently, Karl Marx read his book about Hegel, and the rest is history.

On two points, I believe the authors are quite correct. Hegel surely didn't believe in "the end of history", since he said that the World Spirit might manifest itself in the United States in the future (i.e. Prussia isn't the end of historical development). The idea about "the end of history" seems to be a concoction of one Alexandre Kojève, a French Hegelian often regarded as highly idiosyncratic by Hegelian scholars. The other point concerns German nationalism. Hegel, of course, supported Napoleon. Later, he made his peace with the Holy Alliance, which wasn't nationalist either. Indeed, at the time *liberalism* was associated with nationalism!

What I don't understand about "Hegel Myths and Legends" is the exact status of the contributing authors. Are they really Hegelians? Some kind of neo-centrist Hegelians, perhaps? But what on earth can being a Hegelian possibly mean today? Or are they simply scholars who believe that Hegel had some interesting ideas worth looking into, and who for that reason want to defend the old man's reputation?

Although "Hegel Myths and Legends" is apparently intended for students, it isn't an easy read. You need to be relatively well informed about Hegel, or at least the myths and legends surrounding him, to really appreciate it. Frankly, it's a typically boring scholarly tome.

But yes, it might be worth looking into if you actually plan to read "Phenomenology of the Spirit"...

Hegel, it seems, is all things to all people.

A Great Book!
A great story about a visionary.Dr. Garfield started Kaiser Permanente and envisioned computerized medicine and preventive health as paramount in his system -- in 1960! The firstMedical Center cared for the workers of the Kaiser Steel Mill, where workers paid 5 cents a week for medical care. A must read for health professionals, patients, and everyone in between!It is especially relavent as Kaiser has become a model for current healthcare systems.

Health care reform has long roots
Sid Garfield's plan for health care reform was so far ahead of its time that the organization he founded -- Kaiser Permanente -- still drives toward the vision, years after his death. (Disclosure: I am senior director of communications and brand management for Kaiser Permanente's Colorado region).

This biography puts today's health care discussion into historical context. As early as the 1930s, reform proposals that threatened the status quo were called "socialized medicine." Garfield and uber-capitalist Henry Kaiser were "socialists" because they came up with a financing system that brought quality health care to working Americans. Workers and their employers "pre-paid" a few cents a day for full coverage. Garfield and his doctors and nurses were thus assured of a predictable revenue stream that enabled them to open clinics and hospitals close to work sites, such as the Grand Coulee Dam in Oregon, the California Aqueduct in the Mojavi Desert and the WW II shipyards in Oakland.

The financing mechanism also encouraged Garfield's team to reduce injuries and prevent illness. Workplace safety and the country's earliest screening and vaccination programs blossomed under the arrangement. The smoking cessation, stress reduction and nutrition classes offered by Kaiser Permanente today have their roots in this core emphasis on what Garfield called "Total Health."

Garfield's approach brought doctors of all specialties together under one roof.This "group practice" model is the environment in which doctors train, and it only made sense to continue it in day-to-day practice. Today, 60 percent of J.D. Power's top 20 health care systems are group practice models, such as Kaiser Permanente, Mayo and Harvard Pilgrim.

I was surprised to learn that Garfield created hospital designs. His put the medical team closer to patients and segregated sterile hallways from public ones. He installed pneumatic tubes so that "medical records will get to the doctor before the patient does."

Garfield championed computer-assisted medicine in the 1960s, recognizing that information is the currency of health care. With medical information collected and analyzed, doctors get granular about each patient's needs and they get the big picture about diseases and effectiveness of treatments.

Garfield's vision still unfolds today, as Kaiser Permanente recently completed an electronic medical records system that serves more than 8 million patients. But implementation of an EMR is only the first step toward Garfield's vision of a coordinated system of health care rather than sick care. In the next steps, patients use the online access to their records to become more engaged in their health care, physicians and their teams use the information to tailor care precisely to the patient need, and researchers compare the effectiveness of treatment protocols.

Ironically, Garfield, who believed his health care model would "keep medicine out of the hands of government bureaucrats," was called a socialist. President Obama, who has said the Kaiser Permanente model is one the nation should emulate, also is called a socialist. Perhaps we need to change the definition of socialist to: One who threatens the status quo.

Favorite Garfield quotes:

National health insurance, an attractive idea to many Americans, can only make things worse. Medicare and Medicaid -- equivalents of national health insurance for segments of our population -- have largely failed because the surge of demand they created only dramatized and exacerbated the inadequacies of the existing delivery system and its painful shortages of manpower and facilities.

It's really time for us to revitalize our plan. I suggest a radical new idea -- that we stop building hospitals and clinics for sick people. Let's concentrate on a brand new type of facility -- a new first in the world. Let us conceive a building for health -- designed, streamlined, and geared to serve our healthy members.

This change from episodic crisis sick care to programmed total health care forces a new look at the recording and processing of medical information ... Continuing total health care requires a continuing life record for each individual ... The content of that life record, now made possible by computer information technology, will chart the course to be taken by each individual for optimal health."

Finally a Tune for the Unsung Hero of Modern Healthcare
I worked for Sidney Garfield as Mental Health Coordinator of the Total Health Care Program after I graduated from the Doctor of Mental Health Program at UCSF in 1980. I always felt that I was privileged to work with one of the true giants of American health care. I, too, believe that Dr Garfield has never received his due recognition in the field, so many thanks to the author for writing a book that highlights his numerous, groundbreaking contributions.

Dr Garfield was truly prescient. Over three decades ago, he anticipated, wrote about, and implemented many of the concepts that have become the buzzwords of the last decade --- "disease management," "demand management," and "primary care reengineering," for example. He also pioneered population management, health risk appraisal, automated medical records, consumer empowerment and the integration of health education and behavioral health care into the primary care setting to meet the needs of the "well" and the "worried well." Unlike most physicians, he approached the primary care and hospital delivery systems with a productions, operations, and management vision that is very atypical in medical settings. As well as describing his unique contributions to American healthcare, The Story of Sidney Garfield gives fascinating insights into the man's social development and life experiences. The personal attributes of this gracious, generous and unassuming man come through loud and clear. Working with the septuagenarian Dr Garfield as a 28-year-old definitely gave me the feeling that I was developing in the shadow of greatness.

In closing, Dr Garfield was a true innovator. Working closely with him in the early 80's was a unique and valuable experience: more than anyone else he has inspired my professional life in subsequent decades. Thank you, thank you and thank you to the author of The Story of Sidney Garfield for honoring him so well.

Historical page-turner -- an informative account of the beginnings of U.S. medical care
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the early years of health care in the U.S. The book is a fascinating read -- vividly capturing who Sidney Garfield was and the overwhelming contribution he made to medicine. The chapters build Dr. Garfield's character through his early struggles of wanting to be an architect, through real-life accounts, writings, and photos of his growth in becoming a renowned physician. In Garfield's fortuitous encounter with industrialist Henry Kaiser -- to eventually becoming Henry's brother-in-law -- the book brings these men to life as magically as it tells the important history of early group medical practice in the U.S.A real page turner.

In 200 pages of text (the book is 240 pages long) and with 22 pages of notes, Hamm, editor of the Brooklyn Rail (an arts and political monthly) and associate professor of urban studies at Metropolitan College of New York, brings readers an incredibly interesting account (series of stories) about "a handful of media personalities, blogs, outlets, and politically based organizations--from The Onion to Jon Stewart to the Daily Kos." (From the front jacket) What he does is show where these "blue media" (Michael Moore, Bill Maher, Markos Moulitsas, Air America, MoveOn The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, as well as liberal blogs) came from and how they got so powerful. TEN star Excellent thought provoking book
This is a must read book for anyone who is the least bit interested in how the Internet and shows like Jon Stewart's and Stephen Colbert are changing the political landscape.

The book also reminded me of a PBS special with the men and women from the old Your Show Of Shows (Mel Brooks included) from the early 50's where Mr. Brooks make the astute observation that when TV was new the only people who could afford the sets, were by and larger better educated and thus better paid. And because of this the viewer wanted shows that were mature thinking, and whose humor was the type that left something to the viewers imagination. Yet, as more and more people could afford a television set, things changed, and humor had to be more direct and less cerebral.

This is why shows like those Jon Stewart (The Daily Report) and The Colbert Report, remind me of early television and a more discerning viewer.I also read The Onion, and I did listen on occasion to Air America, but as the author notes, it became a tad tiring and less thought provoking because its seemed to want to mimic someone like Rush Limbaugh.I do agree with the author who touches upon the concern that progressive media be it television, radio or print, needs to also appeal to the blue colour listener.

It saddens me that so many progressives still see blue colour as being less educated and lower paid. But that's just my view.I consider myself blue color since I live in a rural area, live in less than someone in suburbia, and dropped out of college.Yet, being blue color doesn't mean I don't like political humor that is thought provoking, or isn't issue oriented.


I also like the book because it makes the reader see that television shows like Stewart's and Colberts, also allow humor that some people avoid, which does indeed make a person think! And the author is also VERY fair when it comes to critical observations of people like Michael Moore.

Incisive Look at the Pervasive Impact of the New Progressive Media

New Blue Media Review from a Red State
This is definitely an entertaining and informative book about the rise of the new liberal media. The author's sympathies lie with Michael Moore, MoveOn and the liberal blogs, but he doesn't hesitate to disagree with these groups--especially when they seem to be too close to the Democratic leadership. At the same time, he shows how the New Blue Media have shaken up the party. His accounts of the Dean campaign, first for president and then for the chair of Democratic National Committee, as well as the Ned Lamont campaign and the George Allen "Macaca" incident, are all very lively.

The author is less critical of The Onion, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, but he nevertheless shows how valuable their voices are. They are asking the critical questions about the war in Iraq and many other issues that the mainstream media ignore. The writing is sharp and the author often shows biting wit, as when he writes that "the Bush Administration's response to Hurricane Katrina was--naturally--disastrous" (p. 19). The author has little sympathy for anybody who supported the Iraq War, which means that fans of Bush and the Clintons won't like the book. Very Funny
Glad I finally took the time to read this. A bit frenetic, but lots of laughs and insights hidden inside humor.

Funny take on everything
Colbert's medium is "live" performance, which doesn't come across as well in print, but when you "hear" the content in your head, the satire "sounds" great and just as wry, and makes the the same oblique points that make you chuckle while gritting your teeth.

As a Graduate Student in Economics at Berkeley, I have been forced to utilize over two dozen texts covering the subjects of statistics and econometrics.Jon Stewert has produced in this small volume what I consider the clearest, least recondite, tome ever written about the subject. Good content, poorly structured
This was one of those, "must have for the course" type of books.I thought that I would use it later down the road, but I have already sold it.If you are trying to obtain a certification, this book will help.If you are just looking for general knowledge, you may want to look somewhere else.

This book is not for the "average" user.It is a whopping 1568 pages and weights over six pounds!The size did not scare me, but the wire binding did.I would highly recommend that you DO NOT purchases the wire bound version of this book.The pages are difficult to turn and the wire binding easily bends.This book has good content, but make sure you pick-up a non-wire bound copy.

G W F Hegel's so-called speculative logic was revolutionary since it attacked the basic laws of Aristotelian logic - the laws of contradiction and excluded middle - which stood as the foundation for the field for well over a millennium. He replaced these laws with the principle of mediation, which he used to redefine all the key terms of the discipline. In the 1830s this highly controversial theory was attacked by a number of philosophers in Germany and Prussia. These debates spilled over into Denmark in the late 1830s and early 1840s and represent one of the signal episodes in the Danish Hegel reception. This volume includes the main texts in this controversy. The debate proper was initiated by the article "Rationalism, Supernaturalism" by the theologian Jakob Peter Mynster, who attacked Hegel's criticism of the law of excluded middle. The poet Johan Ludvig Heiberg, and the then young theologian Hans Lassen Martensen, then came to Hegel's defense with articles which responded to Mynster's charges.
