A leading fitness expert offers a ten-week plan for a total-body makeover, using a sensible diet plan and a different exercise routine for each week that is designed to improve cardiovascular health, reduce weight, and sculpt a slimmer body. Amazon.com Review
This is a 10-week beginner's program and training log for women. It's designed to improve muscle tone, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and body composition, and to allow you to keep track of every repetition of every exercise. Each week on the program features new exercises and focuses on a different aspect of nutrition--fat, protein, water, vitamins. The program is well-organized, clearly outlined, and easy to follow. Best of all, unlike the authors of other eponymous fitness books, Kathy Smith doesn't get in your face on every page; she seems to have presumed you've picked up the book because you want to get in shape first and because she's Kathy Smith second. Good choice, good book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review for someone who doesn't know where to start.
After seeing so many great reviews of this book here, I borrowed it from the library. The book is a 10-week plan to improved fitness and is more geared to women. Each week, Kathy focuses on one nutrition concept and one body part--for example, Week 1 is "Fat and Abs."After a few pages describing the concepts for the week, there are a series of worksheets to help you keep track of your exercise and eating for that week. This format continues for all 10 weeks, which means that the bulk of the book is made up of the worksheets rather than actual information. At the end of the book, Kathy has included sections on stretches and toning exercises for the entire body. Both sections are nice illustrated with pictures of Kathy performing the moves, and each move is described in detail.

Being someone who has exercised regularly for years and who knows basic nutrition, I didn't feel like I learned anything from this book. However, I did like the idea of keep specific logs of my eating and exercise habits, so I might try to incorporate that from this book.Even though this book wasn't really for me, it would be great for someone wanting to get started on the path to healthy eating and exercise but who has no idea where to begin.Kathy is extremely non-threatening, and she takes you through everything you need to know step-by-step.However, you should be aware that if you follow Kathy's plan, you will need to obtain a separate book that lists fat and calorie contents for foods; Kathy makes several recommendations for these at the start of her book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pick and choose what you like
While I wouldn't call this book an unqualified success for me, it's definitely one of my most valued resources for fitness for the strength training aspect alone.

I have several books on strength training for women, but this one is definitely my favorite. Each week of the ten calls for a slightly different set of 12 toning exercises. Every week Kathy emphasizes a particular body part/muscle group - for example, abs, back, or shoulders - and there may be several exercises that week for that particular body part. Each week also includes exercises that work just about every major part of your body. By doing the full ten-week cycle, you'll have worked each muscle group pretty well, and there is plenty of room for improvement by adding weights, sets and/or repetitions.

There are clear black-and-white photographs demonstrating how to perform the exercises. All you need are three sets of dumbbells to start with (e.g., 3 lb., 5 lb. and 8 lb.), a chair, and a firm pillow. The calf exercise calls for a step (like those used in aerobic step programs), but if you have stairs in your home that will work fine, too.

The other aspects of the book - nutrition and diet advice, stretching, etc. - round out the information and give you a complete basis for fitness, although I don't focus on cutting out total fat grams as much as Kathy suggests. I've come to believe that keeping track of total calories, combined with striving to meet the USDA's food pyramid diet guidelines, is best, with fat being given secondary consideration. But that's just me.

The logs are handy and would be great if you just want to treat it like a ten-week "course curriculum," but I have been logging my food and exercise independently of the book and just using the book as a reference. Still, even though I'm not using the logs or adhering strictly to the ten-week program, I find this book invaluable for my basic strength training routine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title of this book is not an exaggeration
I struggled for a long time trying to lose weight. Once I got this book, I realized that although I was exercising and eating a decent amount of calories, I was eating WAY too much fat. I cut back to the requisite amount for my height and frame, and voila!, I started losing weight immediately. I've lost almost 20 pounds in the last 11 months, and I feel much more knowledgeable and in control now that I'm armed with the information I learned from this book. I always recommend it to people I know who are trying to lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent fitness companion
I've just ordered my third copy of this book, because I love it so much.I really helps to teach you about fitness and nutrition gradually, rather than throwing everything at you at once -- it's all about life style changes, not a quick fix. It's also been a great way to get me on track when I've slipped a little bit, or need to refocus on nutrition. It's a wonderful tool!

2001 Nauvoo Temple Commemorative Edition Softcover book. Quote Rear Cover: "Outside the Standard Works there is no assemblage of words that better express the mind and will of the Lord than those spoken by the prophet of God in General Conference. So important is this source that Latter-day Saints have been taught to accept it as scripture. The Prophet Joseph Smith was the single-most important voice on earth since New testament times. Every word preserved of his life and teachings is important. Of special interest in this volume are four revelations not found in the Doctrine and Covenants- three of which were lost for over a century. Also included, as a part of General Conference, is the laying of the Nauvoo Temple cornerstone. Several conference addresses in this book were given in the unfinished temple or near by. With the unique indexing system used in this book, Latter-day Saints now can find in seconds what Joseph Smith said on many subjects not addressed in the D&C. No LDS home should be without this invaluable book." (Latter Day Saints/Mormon Discourses / Prophet Joseph Smith, GeneralConference LDS) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointingly fails
Obviously you're a huge Elliott Smith fan and a guitar player that you've considered buying this book.

If you are a beginner that has a tough time even strumming along to the basic song structure of, say, Waltz #2, by ear, then this book could be helpful for you.

But if you are looking for a correct, complex tab of some of the Elliott songs you just can't get because of the tuning and strange chords, then you're out of luck.

First of all, this book doesn't tackle most of the difficult, unique songs - the ones you would buy the book for.Any decent guitar player can strum along to Waltz #2 or Between the Bars, and there are already good online tutorials and tabs for songs in standard tuning like Angeles.

It's the unique tunings and consequent strange chord voicings of songs like Clementine, Ballad of Big Nothing, No Name #5, Southern Belle, etc, that a resource like this would even be useful for in the first instance. Of these trickier guitar sons only Ballad of Big Nothing and Clementine are in here.

So basically I got the book for Ballad of Big Nothing. I can't quite get some of the chords in this one down, and, low and behold, you get to that part of the song in the song book and its wrong! Flat out wrong. I know enough to know that the songbook just fudged it here like I do. Unfortunately I bough the book because I don't want to fudge it anymore. Alas.

Also, I know how to play Clementine and the songbook is wrong in a few places there too.

Basically if you're a beginner, you can't get anything out of this book you can't find on the useless tabs online. And if you're an advanced player trying to take your Elliott playing to the next ultra-authentic notch, this book simply fails.

Still waiting for someone to write a proper tab for a song like No Name #5!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Additon to Your Collection
I bought this for my husband as a birthday gift and he loved it.He loves the music and for him to be able to have the songbook and give it a try was exciting for him. Great buy for anyone that admires Elliott Smith's lyrics and music.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This book is really good for some songs and not so good for others. Don't count on learning any solos/complicated bridges to any of the songs because the author simply did not attempt to tab them out for you. I found improvements to these tabs by watching youtube videos in some cases. I think my favorite songs to play from this book are ballad of big nothing and memory lane; they are both well done. I really wanted to learn that solo from somebody that I used to know but it's not in there. And why tab " I didn't Understand"?? Why not put in a more guitar friendly song that is not accapella?!!! Considering this is the only official book on elliott you can buy in the states, I would buy it if you're a fan. The only other book available is sold in the UK.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book includes everything you need to play Elliott Smith with just you and an Acoustic Guitar
Like most reviewers, I've been a long time fan of Elliott Smith. I first became aware of Elliott by chance. A chance Stumbling upon a quiet, withdrawn looking man on a stage in Salt Lake City Utah. I've been listening and attempting to learn those songs ever since.

I've spent many years traveling the internet in search of accurate tabs. Most leave out the incredibly complex chords and riff lines. Most are dumbed down versions of his songs and do not accurately capture the harmonic colors and complexities in his chord choice. Most do not tab out the intricate finger picking patterns. And none of them notate the vocal melody. Which to me is extremely important to Elliott Smith's music. especially if you are studying his songwriting technique.

There is one notorious web page among Elliott Smith fans for accurate tab of his songs. While this site manages to get the majority of the chords correct there is so much that is missing. The "Elliott Smith Songbook" gives you all that has been missing for guitarists and songwriters interested in learning and dissecting his songs. not only does The "Elliott Smith Songbook" get all of the chords correct but it correctly tabs out the finger picking patterns and their intricate rhythms. The book notates all the correct tunings, the chords and their names, rhythms, finger picking patterns, melodic guitar riffs, the song structure and vocal melody. I have yet to encounter any other source that has all this to offer. I recently ordered the European tab book that reviewers have been talking about but it was almost $40 dollars.

For the price the "Elliott Smith Songbook" is more than sufficient. In fact I've been wanting all that this book has to offer for so long that I would have paid twice as much.

Don't let the negative reviews sway you from buying this. There is plenty to learn from this book. I consider myself an advance guitarist and songwriter and I have been learning something new every day since the book came in the mail.

What is missing from this book is a greater notation of his more arranged songs. There are not any tabs of the bass lines or lead guitar solos nor the vocal harmonies. The bass notes in Elliott's songs are usually incorporated in the guitar chords so tab of the bass line is not always necessary as they are present in the complex chords. Cover bands who are not able to take the chords and melody and work out the solos, harmonies and bass lines may find that this book lacks what they need.

Many of Elliott Smith's songs were written and performed with only an acoustic guitar and his voice. If your intention is to learn the songs solo with you and your guitar this tab book will suit you just fine.

3-0 out of 5 stars An acceptable one-stop resource.
I'm a long time Smith fan and have been playing guitar for about three and a half years. [...]. Finding the best tabs and videos takes time, but I've found that the end result is better than what this book has to offer. Specifically, "Angeles" and "Miss Misery" are off. The tune is close, but several of the cords are not what Smith played. They sound out of place when played with the whole song. Additionally, many of the hammer on's and short riffs are wrong or simply missing all together. Other songs like "Bottle Up and Explode!" and "Between the Bars" seem closer to the real thing, but admittedly I don't know these pieces very well.

A quick google search of "The Essential Elliott Smith" shows that it does indeed exist, but it seems to be available only in the UK. That's nothing some extra shipping charges can't fix. ... Read more

Product Description
A provocative look at the remarkable contributions of high-skill immigrant entrepreneurs in America

Both a revelation and a call-to-action, Immigrant, Inc. explores the uncommon skill and drive of America's new immigrants and their knack for innovation and entrepreneurship. From the techies who created icons of the new economy-Intel, Google, eBay and Sun Microsystems-to the young engineers tinkering with solar power and next-generation car batteries, immigrants have proven themselves to be America's competitive advantage.

With a focus on legal immigrants and their odyssey from homeland to start-up, this unique book

  • Explores the psyche, cultural nuances, skills, and business strategies that help immigrants achieve remarkable success
  • Explains how immigrants will create the American jobs of the future-if we let them

Whether you are a CEO, a civic leader, or an entrepreneur yourself, Immigrant, Inc. warns of the peril of anti-immigrant attitudes and a hostile immigration process. It also explains how any American can tap their "inner immigrant" to transform their lives and their companies.

Written by an immigration lawyer who represents immigrant entrepreneurs and a journalist who specializes in international culture, the authors have a front-row seat to this phenomenon, offering a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of the most persistent entrepreneurs of the era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Immigrants and their Important Economic Role
Immigrant, Inc. is a collection of stories about different immigrants and how they were determined to create a better, more prosperous life for themselves and their families. The individuals presented in these stories weighed the pros and cons of making a move and determined that life would be much better in the United States. They waited patiently to receive notice that they could immigrate and some wound up going to other nations first, before finally settling in the United States. These immigrants had a tough road ahead of them, but they persevered, and many have gone on to found large businesses, invent important products or services, and otherwise make life better for themselves and the world around them.

Like this book correctly points out, today's immigrants share many similarities with the immigrants from America's past, but there are also many important differences. More than one- hundred years ago, when immigration in the United States was at its peak, the majority of immigrants to the United States arrived from Europe. Today, the majority come from Asia, with a large percentage coming from India, China, and other nations in this part of the world. These individuals are highly driven to succeed and their parents strongly stress the importance of education and self-discipline. Most of them select math, science, engineering, or computer science as their major fields of study. A large percentage has advanced degrees and they strongly stress the importance of education to their own children. They represent the best and brightest from their native lands, and they naturally perform very well once in the United States, both in education and in their careers.

The stories presented in Immigrant, Inc. are often very inspiring, but don't expect tear- jerking accounts of personal sacrifice and strife. Yes, there is a little bit of background information on the individuals in the book, complete with some coverage of the hardships they endured, but the book tends to avoid the negative talk and focus on the positive. Due to the book's relatively short length and the large number of individuals mentioned, there really isn't much background information for anyone. You get to know the country the individual is originally from, their selected career field, and a few other things. But the book quickly moves to the person's present- day successes. Before you know it, one success story is over and the book is ready to move on to another person.

I like the overall premise of this book and I like the way the authors present different angles on the immigrant role in shaping the new economy. Aside from the successes of different individuals, this book also highlights the efforts of some cities to attract these highly educated, ambitious immigrants and persuade them to settle in their respective locales. Many do not even realize that events like this are taking place, but some cities have actually sought out these immigrants and tried to convince them to move to their communities, for economic reasons. This makes for some interesting reading, but there are a few facts about Immigrant, Inc. that prevent me from rating it more highly. One is that the book isn't balanced. It devotes its space to talking about the success stories, but it doesn't talk at all about the millions of immigrants who have not been successful or the controversies surrounding immigration in general. It does mention that we need to reform our immigrant policy in the United States, but it devotes little space to the politics of the situation. Also, the book would benefit from a better concluding chapter and less choppy writing. There are a few too many paragraphs, and it seems like the authors are quickly changing from one thought to the next as they try to squeeze as much into the book's pages as possible.

Immigrants are important to the American economy and Immigrant, Inc. is a good book on the subject of immigrants and how they are reshaping the economics of our country. Immigrants from India and other Asian nations continue to make an important difference in the cultural and economic history of the United States and their contributions will likely continue to impact our nation in the next few decades. The book has a few minor flaws, but it still makes for some good, inspirational reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, though you may have to dig
This book will appeal to many who like reading story after story of success and hope (and many do as is obvious from the massive success of the Chicken Soup series of books). I don't happen to be one of those people (though I do like a story scattered here and there) and so the delivery mechanism used was difficult for me to push through. However, even if you are like me and dislike lessons by parably only, you should consider this book as it contains valuable insights into the benefits immigrants are bringing to the United States. Don't buy into the myths that say immigrants get tax holidays and free loans that are not available to U.S.-born citizens. Are there programs for these people? Yes, but similar programs exist, with more funds available, for U.S.-born special groups too. The point is that we need the knowledge, culture variation and sweat-and-blood work ethic of these people and this book shows how we can learn from them.

Here we are, born in the ultimate location on planet earth and because we've grown up and lived our lives here without developing wildly successful businesses, we assume the immigrants who do must have an advantage. They do have an advantage - the same drive the pushed them to immigrate pushes them to succeed once they are here. This book makes this truth unquestionably clear.

If you're like me and one story for each point is sufficient, you might consider skimming through chapters 3-8, but make sure you fully read chapters 1-2 and 9-Appendix. They contain most of the non-story content and it is must read content. I only gave the book four stars from a personal preference perspective (which is what these reviews are for), but I wanted you to know that if the entire book was like chapters 1-2 and 9-Appendix, I would have gladly given it five stars. If you like a lot of stories, you will think this is a five star book, I'm sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do you want to be a successful entrepreneur? Then read this book to see how it can be done.

I kind of liked this book. And it is hard for me to rate the book totally objectively since it was so "pro" immigration while I am pretty much "anti" immigration. The book's title says the immigrants are driving the US economy. Something I did not feel was proven within the book's covers. And the book's title says immigrants will save the American worker. Another something that was not proven within the book's covers. While it is true that many immigrants (particularly from the Asian continent, and more specifically from India and China) are successfully starting companies using their engineering and technology training, they are not driving the US economy nor are they making even a dent in saving American workers. As far as I can tell the book paints a picture that these immigrants are really just opportunists exploiting the US for their personal gain at the expense of US workers.

Another shortcoming I found with the book was that it was not always clear whether the authors were talking about all immigrants who create companies or just immigrants with STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) training, skills, and backgrounds. Immigrants that open a restaurant that serves Indian cuisine are considered entrepreneurs. So are immigrants who open a Chinese restaurant or dry cleaning establishment. But these companies don't "save" the American worker. The companies started by immigrants with STEM backgrounds might help some American workers, but the net effect is usually to hurt the American worker by eliminating his or her jobs. How does this save the US worker? It doesn't.

The book points out that immigrants come to the US because they don't have opportunity for financial success in their homelands. The immigrants with STEM backgrounds typically have college degrees from their homelands, but they come to the US to get a graduate education from a US school. Some can find jobs upon graduating from a US school, and they typically become professionals: doctors, engineers, computer scientists, and research scientists. These immigrants take jobs from US workers. Not good. And the others who cannot get a job create their own by starting their own companies. Some jobs for US workers will be created. But they are not saving the US worker as the title to the book states.

There is talk in the book of a New Economy, and of a Global Economy. I was unable to learn from the book how the New Economy was something America was benefiting from. And I also thought mentioning a Global Economy along with America as the land of opportunity was illogical. If we really have a global economy, then how can America stand out as a land of opportunity? Why don't the immigrants just stay home and make their millions at home? This leads back to what I say in paragraph one above about immigrants being nothing more than opportunists.

Someone who reads between the lines in this book will see that the real message to be gathered from the pages is that a young person in the US should study the sciences, engineering, and computers. People trained in these fields can convert their ideas into patents that can be coupled with business plans and sold to venture capitalists. Unfortunately for America most of its youth are being raised by religious people who don't want their children to study science. We all know science and religion contradict one another. We had a US President recently who limited stem cell research because of his religious beliefs. As a result, America is not raising people who can be good entreprenreurs. Without science training it is difficult to get a patent. Without a patent it is difficult to get VC money. And without VC money it is difficult to be a successful entrepreneur. This is especially true if you are trying to drive the New Economy and save the American worker.

In the US we have an education system that is weak in training our youth about science. And that same education system poo-pews the thought of students eventually becoming self-employed. The US education system is TOTALLY geared toward kids going to school so they can get a job - be hired by an existing company. This is why our country is going down the tubes. We don't need immigrants. We need a better education system that is not limiting.

The big problem as I see it with immigration is that we do not have anything near to a global economy currently. And when we do, then no country will be a land of opportunity. When a land of opportunity exists today, that means that tomorrow it will be exploited, and the next day it will not be a land of opportunity. Having said this, I cannot imagine any scenario where immigrants are going to drive the New Economy nor save the American worker.

This was a book of stories. I would have liked it much better if it had been more a book centered around the exhibits in its Appendix. I think each exhibit could have been made into an interesting chapter. I suspect if the authors had written their book the way I suggest, then they wouldn't have titled the book the way they did. I won't say I did not like this book (2 stars), and I probably could say it was just Ok (3 stars), but it had some aspects that I liked (4 stars). So I'll give it that rating. 4 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Immigrants Support the Economic Engine of U.S. Economy
Herman and Smith do an excellent job of supporting their thesis that immigrants have consistently supported new growth in a variety of sectors. They demonstrate this through a series of illustrative, easy to read examples. The book is thoroughly researched, and their style is easy to follow. Anyone interested in, or involved in domestic policy formulation as related to economic issues would benefit from this work. ... Read more

Excerpt: "Men in Black" is a song by Will Smith (featuring singer Coko from double diamond selling group SWV) from the movie Men in Black, in which he also starred. The song plays during the movie's closing credits. Will Smith raps about how the MiBs "Walk in shadow, move in silence" and play the role of "first, last and only line of defense, against the worst scum of the universe", while Coko adds her soulful soprano vocals in the background. The song won Smith a Grammy in 1998 for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Men In Black" features a sample of and a re-sung chorus from "Forget Me Nots" by Patrice Rushen. In a twist, the line "I want you to remember" is changed to "They won't let you remember", in reference to memory-erasing devices used in the Men in Black movie. Aside from appearing on the movie's soundtrack, the song also appears on Will Smith's Columbia Records album Big Willie Style and reached #1 on charts in the UK, Australia and Germany. The song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100 because it was not released as a commercial single in the US; at the time, only songs that were commercially released as singles were eligible, but it did however top the airplay chart. The music video for the song also appears on the DVD The Will Smith Collection. It was also included in the album All Time Greatest Movie Songs, released by Sony in 1999. It was also featured after the end credits of the VHS release of "Men in Black". It was also covered by Forever the Sickest Kids for the compilation album Punk Goes Crunk & by Alvin and the Chipmunks f...http://booksllc.net/?id=1724225 ... Read more
