Everything has it's place
Very logical and straightforward rather than theoretical - a plus for someone in the midst of trying to find guidance for a personal decision.

Good Scriptural Advice
Using the Bible as his basis, the author tells us that often God guides us incrementally, i.e., that we have "light for our path," but do not necessary see a long way down the road. Similarly he talks about taking opportunities as they present themselves as a form of guidance. If you're in a circumstance, do what is best at that time and place.

He also points out that God may have a person in a place for a while, but things change and there comes a time to move on.

One assurance that is given to people who might fear missing God's direction is that God takes the initiative in guidance. If we're sincere in wanting His will, He will see that His will is done, Smith emphasizes. He tells us the Shepherd illustration in the Bible is reassuring in making this point clear. Not only that, but God's guidance is a gift!

There are some areas in this book where I completely disagree with the author. Overall, however, I found more positive than negative--by far.

Pretty good guide
I'm trying to apply the principles now.It's nice to have a book that can show the different aspects of "God's will" (including the personal one), yet not discount the mind.It notes that what we often perceive as guidance (e.g., the supernatural, prophecy, fleeces, and inward guidance) are the exceptions and points out why.It focuses on prayer, understanding the Bible, willingness, and thinking carefully.It recognizes however that we consider our desires, abilities, wise counsel, and circumstances.It seems to answer a lot of my questions about guidance as well as my misconceptions.Best of all, he gives you the Biblical texts to read and analyze yourself to see if his arguments hold up, let alone Biblical examples.I know one friend (who found out about the book independent of me) that bought several copies of this book to give as gifts.I may just do the same.

Extremely challenging and thought provoking book
I find "Knowing God's Will" to be an extremely challenging and thought provoking book. Blaine Smith consistently presents a *balanced* and mature approach towards understanding and seeking the Lord's will for ourlives. He makes it a point to test his own ideas against what the Bibleteaches.

This book will surely challenge you to:-

(1) Discard yourmisconceptions on how we should go about finding God's will.

(2)Understanding how God reveals His will.

Will Power! inspires and enraptures.
I read this book at a difficult time in my life.My mother had died days before, and I was sitting in the closest weeping, when by my foot lay a copy of Will Power!I wiped away the tears and began to read, expectantly, looking for answers.

I was inspired and enraptured to say the least, and my life suddenly took on new meaning.I could breath again, I could sing again.I began to rap involuntarily.I could not stop rapping, until musical ecstacy permeated every pour of my being. I was totally surprised by this one!
I'm adding this to my 'picture book' shelf, but not my 'children's shelf.'Not that the book is inappropriate, but because it almost speaks more to parents than to children.Then again, if you have a youngster who is concerned about loosing a parent's love as they grow up, then definitely this is a fantastic book to illustrate that: once a parent, always a parent.

There were a few passages that I wasn't totally in love with, but overall I was very surprised and impressed with Smith's story!It was nice to see his rhyming abilities put to such great use here, and so beautifully crafted.This book kind of creeps up and you and grabs your heartstrings.

Very sweet, and definitely recommended!

Bought this book for my grandson and he enjoys his mother reading to him every night, he is learning to read by himself. He likes this book and he says it is him and his dad.

The expressive artwork in this book accompanies a text from the lyrics of this award-winning song by Will Smith.This is a story about a father's love for his son, and all of the ups and downs both in their relationship and in life.This book is especially appropriate for divorced or separated fathers, and Will Smith has stated that the song is in part a tribute to the good parenting relationship he has with his ex-wife.Note that the text has multiple references to God as well as a reference to spanking, so it may not be appropriate for every family.

An excellent collaboration!

Every time I came to this refrain in the book, I sang it to the Bill Withers's song of the same title. Sure enough--right on the copyright page is accredited the 1980 song used in this book, "Just the two of us." That is when I discovered also that this was a hit rap song by Will Smith. I knew he was a rapper, but never listened, so I was not familiar with the song.

"Just the Two of Us" was adapted by Smith in this celebration of fatherhood and responsibility. It is also Smith's song about his deep and abiding love for his son. According to the lyrics, Smith fell in love at seventeen. When his girlfriend became pregnant, they did the responsible thing and were married. It ended at some point with Smith obtaining custody.

Just as his parents before him, Smith works to teach his son how to be a man: "Dignity, integrity, honor..." and "Always tell the truth, say your prayers, hold doors, pull out chairs, easy on the swears..."

The closing words: "Daddy loves you! Daddy loves you! for the rest of your life." These are words that spring tears because of the power of their declaration. You know Will Smith means what he says.

The third part of the collaboration is the artwork of Kadir Nelson: beautiful, intense, and vivid, rendered in pencil and oil paint. I'm not sure why he adds the little exaggerations like that awful sway in Smith's back and the large skulls of both Smith and his son. Those are not very attractive, but not enough to take away from the gorgeous sunset picture of Smith and his son--orange sky, seagulls sweeping low, making a catch

At any rate the original Withers song as the creative source, plus the top-selling rap version, placed into a combination book of bright, happy yet realistic illustrations. This is a book that stays checked out in my school library.

most helpful reading
I found this, as well as another book by the author, Courage and Calling, practical and insightful help in discerning some heavy choices in my life over the last two years.Particularly helpful was the "Clearness Committee" concept.My husband and I recently implemented this, and received some (hard) but excellent input from discerning friends.A great book on a most critical issue--learning to discern God's best for your life.

The best book I've read on the subject!
Smith is thorough and gives a very balanced view of discerning God's will.I highly recommend this book.It was timely for me.

Answers some very important questions
I read the first 96 pages in 4 days as I was trying to find something that would help me discern the meaning and purpose of a dream I had. I didn't want to be deaf to God's promptings because I want to do His will and Ineeded some answers. I prayed, meditated, thought, studied the word,consulted trusted believers, asked for prayer, and tried to listen for Godto tell me what to do. This book supported these methods of trying todiscern God's will, but more than that, it pointed out that discernmenttakes time. I felt 80% sure that I was interpreting the dream correctly andproceeded accordingly. This book also emphasized that discernment ishampered in times of spiritual desolation. Good point. It seems obviouswhen your brain and heart are not clouded, but I'm glad I read it first, soI'll know that in advance. I wish I had read the rest of the book beforemaking my decision, because a really great section entitled 'Blocks toDiscernment', really helped me. I still learned something valuable from thedream and the book. One thing that blew me away was what the author saidabout prayer and fasting. The purpose of fasting with prayer is not toprove to God that you are more serious in your commitment; the purpose offasting with prayer is to focus on what God is trying to tell you ! WOW ! One of the Funniest Books I've Ever Read!

Whereas Luke loses light sabers, wears a judo outfit, fancies his sister and his best friend is a gay robot.

Will Smith has provided a number of multiple choice quizzes along the way as well so you can test yourself and tell if the advice is sinking in or not and if you are indeed becoming cool.

Much advice to help you out in life.For example during a job interview when asked to mention one of your faults you'll learn that "I like to stalk people, I'm following a few of your staff, and a job here will really make the days shifts easier" is not the most appropriate response.Will Smith suggests a number of lines such as "My superior qualities make my colleagues question the validity of every aspect of their existence."After you've read the book future success will be all yours.

NOT a biography, but a mere résumé (and one with annoying infomercial-style background music at that)
I had seen a video called "Will's Wisdom" on YouTube and was curious to learn more about what drives this man. That's why I purchased this audio book.

However, I personally found this "biography" to be very shallow, just outlining Will's different stages in life, without much detail. I can't imagine the author having worked more than two weeks on this "biography". Content-wise, it's really more like a 30-minute "documentary" than a "biography" (even though the audio book is longer than 30 minutes).

What I also found very distracting in this production is the background music. It makes the whole audio book sound like an infomercial or a movie trailer.

If you're looking for a quick overview over Will's life, don't want to spend more than an hour of your time, and if you don't mind audio books with background music, then this book might be okay for you. Otherwise, you won't be satisfied with it, and you'll still be left looking for a REAL biography after listening to this. In this case, you might as well save your money.

(I ordered "Will Smith: A Biography" by Lisa Iannucci now -- but, of couse, since I haven't read this one yet, I can't make a comparison or give a recommendation.)

This Critic Loved It
Excellent research and writing by Mr. Embacher have provided an exceptional book which is both an easy read and informative.As a children's book it is impeccable because it provides inspiration to youthful readers and allows them to learn new words using the footnotes on each page.As a biography, this book is a quick look at the incredible life of Will Smith, and while it only focuses on a few events, it gives an entire view of his life and how hard he has worked to achieve success.I can't wait to see more films and rap albums from Will Smith; and more book from Eric Embacher.
