5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
Every single page of this wonderful book is endearing and delightful-- the sweetest Christmas book ever! Maggie Smith's mice are adorably charming, and every detail in her warm and cheerful illustrations conjure up favorite Christmastime memories. Leafing through the pages, you can practically smell the Christmas tree and cookies in the oven. There is a sweet humor here, too... I love Daddy Mouse's natty wardrobe and the sideline comments of the little ones. And of course I must mention the recipes for Gingerbread Mice and Cinnamon Snails, which I tried... this a deliciously interactive book, too! Illustrated directions for Christmas crafts add even more fun to the story line. I highly recommend this book to help cheer up anyone's Christmas... I will certainly be sending it to every child on my list. ... Read more

I love all of Betty Smiths Books, These have not been re-published and getting an in tact copy was great. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Betty Smith novel
This is not only my favorite Betty Smith book, it is my all-time best loved book. The story starts with Patrick Dennis Moore, a handsome, spoiled young Irishman as he goes to Brooklyn, New York to start a new life, leaving his one true love behind in his small village of Kilkenny. In Brooklyn, he marries a sweet girl and they have a daughter called Maggie-Now. I wish I could convey the richness and warm humanity of the characters in this sweeping story, which folows the lives of these characters over many years. There is tenderness, sadness and humor; after you finish this book, the characters will linger in your mind. The story of Maggie-Now is not as sad as in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, also written by Betty Smith, nor do the main characters live in such grinding poverty. They are such real, endearing people, I wish I knew them. A wonderful story you will enjoy reading over and over.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not her best novel.
"Maggie Now" has many of the very compelling aspects of Betty Smith's novels - all of which are worth reading. Her sense of the time and the place makes me feel like I am there.I always feel like I understand Brooklyn at the turn of the century while I am immersed in one of her stories. She has a beautiful way with words that allows me to see things like she did as a young girl. All in all, she is one of my favorite authors.

However, I got the feeling in this book that she must have written it a bit at a time.It seemed like parts flowed, but there were also gaps in the stream of the prose. There are a couple of places where I could imagine her returning to a manuscipt after not having written for awhile and having to get reacclimated to the plot and characters.

Furthermore, I found the characters to be uncharacteristically shallow and unappealing. The "Claude" story line was weak and very unbelievable. When he finally revealed the truth about his life, it was anti-climactic.The ensuing resolution was trite.

So, if you are a Betty Smith fan, read this.If you want to read her best - go for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." "Joy in the Morning" is almost a sequel to "A Tree," and is probably the next best written."Tomorrow Will be Better" is also good reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars My All Time Favorite Book
I was 12 when I first picked up the book at our local Willoughby library. My mom said I would enjoy it.I had the book for five weeks, I renewed it twice, but what a joy!How I fell in love with Maggie-Now, and her brother Denny. It molded my views on life, that we take what we get and learn to live with it, love, laugh and cry.I would liken my dates to Clyde, how when I was 12 I thought he was the greatest, but as I grew older, I realized that he wasn't.He wasn't that prince charming I thought he was.But then again, who is?Maggie loved him, and I did also.I suggest every young teenager girl read this book, along with Betty Smiths other two books:A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Tomorrow Will Be Better. This helps us realize how difficult the world was then, and how, in different terms, it's difficult now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Disappointment
I have to say first that A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is my all-time favorite novel. I was a young child in Brooklyn and the vivid descriptions of the smells, sights, and sounds of Brooklyn really did the city justice. Because of my love for this book I read Joy in the Morning and Maggie Now. I wasn't as impressed with Joy in the Morning, though I did enjoy it and read it fairly quickly. Maggie Now, however, was an entirely different story.

It took me months to finish this book because I had no desire to pick it up. Betty Smith's books are fairly consistent for using multiple pages for the descriptions of passerby characters, people we read about once and never hear from again, or at least, not for a few hundred pages. This didn't bother me at all in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Joy in the Morning. The characters were intriguing and fun. I did feel that they were superfluous and downright boring in Maggie Now.

When I finally finished the book, because I was on a long plane ride with nothing else to do, I sat in my seat with a bothered look on my face and out loud said "Seriously?" I couldn't believe I wasted so much time for such a horrible story. The dialogue was almost laughable, and not because it was humorous.

I do give it credit for not ending in a predictable happy ending, but the entire story was just one depressing moment after another. I think the thing that bothered me most was the fact that I had no respect for Maggie Now by the time I closed the book. I admired Francie Nolan. If I have daughters, I would want them to look at her character as a role model. Even the heroine in Joy in the Morning was a strong self-sufficient woman, though at times seemingly ditzy.

Maggie Now, however, was close to being almost insulting to women who value self respect and a non-abusive husband. I consider myself a romantic, I adored the connection between Denny and Tessie, but I cannot, even in the furthest stretch of my imagination, accept Maggie and Claude as a romance. The book glorifies a man treating his wife like dirt, leaving for more months out of a year than he's home, never telling her where he is working or has been. It's an abusive relationship that she and her family allow to continue until Maggie has lost everything; her husband, her foster children, any hope of having her own children, her father and her brother due to their own marriages...It's depressing!

It's not heart wrenching enough to make the reader sympathize with Maggie. With the exception of her mother passing away, all the heartache in her life was brought on by her decision to choose Claude. This book is NOT for those who appreciate strong women. It is a good scare tactic for showing what can happen to a girl when she chooses the wrong partner in life.

This book will NOT be passed down to my daughters.

Product Description
Born on a Somerset pea-field in 1941, the second of eight children in a Romani family, Maggie Smith-Bendell has lived through the years of greatest change in the travelling community's long history. As a child, Maggie rode and slept in a horse-drawn wagon, picked hops and flowers, and sat beside her father's campfire on ancient verges, poor but free to roam. As the twentieth century progressed, common land was fenced off and the traditional ways disappeared. Eventually Maggie married a house-dweller and tried to settle for bricks and mortar, but she never lost the restless spirit, the deep love of the land and the gift for storytelling that were her Romani inheritance. Maggie's story is one of hardship and prejudice, but also, unforgettably, it recalls the glories of the travelling life, in the absolute safety of a loyal and loving family. ... Read more

Product Description
Paisley has been sitting on the shelf at Big & Little Toys too long. He’s seen other animals come and go, but somehow he’s never found his perfect match. And so, taking matters into his own hands, Paisley sets off on a quest to find the special someone he knows is out there for him. He braves many perils in his search, but his intrepid determination is rewarded when he finds the girl of his dreams at last.

Well, that’s the way Paisley tells the story. Maggie Smith’s wonderfully warm and touchable pictures tell a different tale. In truth, Paisley is mistakenly thrown away, tossed about, and then left in the lost and found at Lolly’s Laundry, where a curious little girl happily discovers him.

But when Pearl and Paisley get together, it doesn’t matter who found who—they are a perfect match.
Children will laugh at Paisley’s almost-true telling of his tale and will readily understand his need to feel like he’s in control. Sure to melt your heart, this is a love story that celebrates the power of a positive outlook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming!
The story and the artwork are simply charming but the enthusiasm and the optimism of the little Paisley endeared me to this book. It's a situation that most little ones worry about, stuffed animals having no one to love, and it pulled at my heartstrings. I loved this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Paisley
I ordered this book for my granddaughter after checking it out from the library several times. She loves it. It is a very cute story about finding a little stuffed elephant's special someone. Both she and her brother ages 5 and 3 have really enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars So lovely.
I find Paisley to be unusual for a children's book--most authors would put the book in third person, I think, but Maggie Smith chose first person. So Paisley tells us the tale.I love all the details--every animal at the shop where Paisley's story begins has personality.A green whale with white polka dots, a snail with a colorful shell, some gingham/seersucker cats, a dinosaur with a pattern of flowers or cogs, a swirly octopus, a plaid giraffe, and flowered farm animals are just some of the many characters in the store. Each animal is meant for a particular child, but Paisley's destiny involves an exciting journey through streets and a laundromat. We see the swing tag go flying from the plastic hanger on the elephant's ear, and we can witness the dizzying/sickening effects washers and dryers can have on a stuffed animal.Paisley despairs of ever finding the right child, but the end of the book represents a new beginning for our charming protagonist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh an elephant needs to be loved!
This is such a cute book! I love the contrast between what Paisley is describing and what the pictures are showing. Paisley puts a positive spin on situations which are actually out of his control. There's a lot of colorful patterns in the illustrations, and repeated readings reveal some humorous details. Our 2 year old is a big fan! ... Read more

Product Description
In Lamp of the Body, Maggie Smith illuminates nothing less than the opportunities for and the possibilities of poetic utterance. Her themes—landscape, loss, and western myth—are richly classic; her language, sensuous and elegant. Primitive and visionary, exacting and unrestrained, these poems are in possession of a good strangeness, an awful nostalgia that irrevocably transforms the now.--Kathy Fagan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lamp of the Body
Smith's poems transform the everyday into the haunting and strange, and make us reconsider how we see parts of our world: the suburbs, the family, the Midwest, desire. These poems are smart, startling, and never, ever dull. This is one of my all-time favorite books of poetry, and I return to it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange and Beautiful
This is Smith's first full-length collection (after a previous chapbook), but it reads like a second or third collection, by which I mean to say that it has all the mastery of a book by someone who's been at the effort for decades without having lost any of the youthful verve that makes the best poetry vital.

The first poem alone ("Button") makes the book worth its cover price.

As the seedlings grow and then bud and blossom, Maggie Smith's illustrations grow as well. The first pictures are open and spare, but they grow richer and more colorful as petunias and poppies and zinnias burst forth with each turn of a page. 5-0 out of 5 stars My most often used book on anger for children
This book, like all of the books in the series, is written from the pet's point of view.Max the dog observes all different types of situations that cause his owner, Maria, to feel mad.He also cautions against certain reactions, and then gives page after page of possible ideas kids can try when they're feeling angry. Each page allows easy discussion to develop between you and the child, in which you can bring in details and examples from your child's life.I have read this book to preschool classrooms and in therapy with young children, with great response. The illustrations are super--the children can "read" it back to me after hearing it, just by following the illustrations. It's just the right length, too. Not too short to be useless, and not so long as to lose the child's interest,

I bought this book for my son when he was around 1 year old and he just fell in love with it.For a while he would request it every time we read a story. He is three now so other books have caught his fancy but when he does ask me to read it to him, it never fails to capture our attention and imaginations.Once my son could talk he would ask countless questions about the boy and his adventures on each page.It never ceases to amaze me that he can continually find something new that we didn't notice the last time we read the story. For a while he would hug the book when it was turned to the page with "two fat cats".Each page reminds me of life with a little one, where the house has children's things strewn all over, laundry piled high, food crumbs on the floor but over and above all that it is the little things that count, like planting spring flowers, finding sticks (which my son was fascinated with for a while, too) and just being together. The perfect book to share with the little one in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A four-year-old's favorite
Nice art and a simple counting game make this one fun the first fifty times and then a little tedious thereafter. But that the kids want to read it over and over means that it is a good choice -- you'll just eventually run away too after too many reads!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for toddlers.
Our daughter is almost two and has loved this book since she was 18 months old.The illustrations are wonderful and completely capture her toddler world. It is a delightful book to read aloud. In fact, it is one of the few children's books that my husband and I both enjoy reading time and again. This book is a great addition to any toddler's library. ... Product Description

Huizong was an exceptional emperor who lived through momentous times. A man of many talents, he wrote poetry and created his own distinctive calligraphy style; collected paintings, calligraphies, and antiquities on a large scale; promoted Daoism; and involved himself in the training of court artists, the layout of gardens, and reforms of music and medicine. The quarter century when Huizong ruled is just as fascinating. The greatly enlarged scholar-official class had come into its own but was deeply divided by factional strife. The long struggle between the Chinese state and its northern neighbors entered a new phase when Song proved unable to defend itself against the newly emergent Jurchen state of Jin. Huizong and thousands of members of his family and court were taken captive, and the Song dynasty had to recreate itself in the South.

4-0 out of 5 stars Song Dynasty Civilization
The reign of Emperor Huizong ended the brillient society of the Northern Song Dynasty. The essays in this book explore many different aspects of the emperor and his time. Politics, medicine, painting poetry are among many of the subjects discussed. But, while the detail is excellent, there is no overall understanding presented. ... Read more

Grandpa! Grandpa! Come and see the things I brought for you and me--I packed my bag. I filled it tight with ... Everything to Spend the Night! Rollicking rhymes and illustrations packed with funny details reflect this exuberant narrator's delight as she pulls one thing after another out of her overnight bag and invites her grandpa to join in the fun. Readers will laugh not only at what she's packed, but at the imaginative things she does: "Now let's pretend we're in a lake. I brought an oar. watch me take two chairs, add pillows... Look, a boat! Climb on board -- off we float!" It isn't until everything's out of the bag that she discovers she's forgotten one very important thing: her pj's. Luckily, Grandpa has a solution. Full of joy and humor, this is one overnight no child will want to miss.Amazon.com Review
You never know what you're going to need to pack when you're spendingthenight at Grandpa's house. The little red-haired girl in this exuberant, rhyming story needs quite a bit of this and that, from apples tothezipper on her overnight bag, and everything in between. "'Here'smyQuilt. / I drape it down / and cut gold paper / into crowns. /Ta-daaaaaa!I'm Queen. / ...and you're my king. / I even brought a royal Ring,'"shepronounces, as Grandpa humors her with a deep bow. This all-day,nonstopgrandpa-granddaughter party bounds along at a breakneck pace as shebreaksout the drums, earmuffs, feather, gum, hairbrush, inchworm, jigsawpuzzle, and more: "My Music box will play the song. / Let's twirl andspin / and sing along. / I'm not tired, Grandpa. See! / I packedmore/ things for you and me."She thoroughly exhausts Grandpa and theblack-and-white cat (whose antics are hysterical to watch throughout theday'sshenanigans), but they are both very good sports--even when it turnsoutthat, after all that packing, their little Queen forgot her pajamas. 5-0 out of 5 stars Energetic little girl visiting grandpa.
Everything to Spend the Night From A to Z
The little girl in this story is thrilled to be spending the night with her Grandpa, and she's brought along her overnight bag with everything that they will need for their visit together.Andas it happens, she's brought them all in alphabetical order, from apples to the key to her treasure chest to the zipper on her pajamas. It's quite a busy evening for her playful and patient grandpa and his black-and-white cat as they try to keep up with her.

The busy illustrations perfectly portray a hyper-kinetic youngster as she rushes from activity to activity while her increasingly worn grandpa steers her towards bedtime.By the end of the day, even the cat is exhausted! But when it's finally time to go to bed, she discovers that there is one thing she's forgotten after all, but fortunately grandpa is there to come to her rescue. This is a charming book that will strike an instantly familiar chord with anyone who's ever taken care of an energetic young child, and a painless way to practice the alphabet with children as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute & Colorful
Isn't it true that every time you go on vacation, you forget something? As a child, it did seem I would also remember everything except my pajamas. That is what happens to a giggly little girl who goes to her Grandpa's house for a sleepover.

"First some Apples we can share with Bunny and my fuzzy Bear. They cry whenever I'm not home. I couldn't leave them all alone."

The A in Apples and B in Bunny are colorful letters. In fact, this book is an alphabet type story. There is also a cute cat that makes an appearance. Doing naughty things like walking away with puzzle pieces.

Of course when it is time for bed, she starts to be a silly head and wants to hide under the bed or do headstands. By the time she starts looking for her pj's it is late and she is yawning. The last page ends with the little girl putting on her Grandpa's big pj's. Such a cute little book.

There is a heartwarming ending with bonding memories. A wonderful book!
