5-0 out of 5 stars great book, does drag in parts but great book
i really enjoyed this book, it has humor, and great story telling and its really well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith is AWESOME!!!!!!!
Kevin Smith writings are brillant.Despite the title, Kevin Smith's life is far from boring. This book gives us fans a little insight into his life and allows us a sneak peek in what goes on with him as he prepares for diffrent projects while he lives a normal family life.Having met Mr. Smith at numerous comic conventions, he truly is a great guy and I believe his writings reflect that.Definitely a great read along with his other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars You have to love Kevin to love this book.
I love his movies and a lot of what he writes but this didnt really cut it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
Really. The first half is - as the title promised - really boring. But it sets the stage for the second half, which is a real page turner. I could not put the book down until I was done once I hit the second half.
Never had that experience with a book before. Very strange.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
If you're even a slight Kevin Smith fan you'll love this book.An uncomfortably close look inside Kevin's life.I devoured it in a week. ... Read more

Following on from the New York Times-bestselling My Boring-Ass Life, Kevin Smith is back!

In freewheeling conversations with his friend and producer Scott Mosier (as heard on their top-rated podcast, known as SModcast), we discover — to pick just four random examples of the riches therein — the genesis of Stalin’s Monkey Soldier army, the horrifying tale of Kevin vs. Steak Tartare, how to make bukkake eggs, and how Kevin was once willing to let Alanis Morissette get mugged...

Defiantly lewd, crude and hilariously rude, Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith is a must for all his fans!Adults Only! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
hilarious book. specially for someone who did not know about smodcast until after about a 100 episodes and doesnt want to have to back track

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a week!
If you're reading this review then you're a fan of Smith's and if you are then you'll be familiar with his (usually) weekly podcast, SModcast (usually with his producer Scott Mosier but occasionally includes his wife, daughter, mother and assorted friends).

These are the transcripts of some of the best moments of SModcast: the superb episode where Kevin, Walt Flanagan (high school friend and manager of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Redback, NJ), roast documentarian Malcolm Ingram for not knowing who the Canadian PM is. He insists it's Paul Martin, going so far as to bet his little finger that it is, when it is in fact Stephen Harper. It's amazing to hear but just as funny to read.

Other highlights include the Helen Keller convo, making up lurid scenarios for Harry Potter, Kevin and Walt remembering their adolescent years searching for comics with Jason Mewes and what he would do for a free comic, Walt's clones, Kevin getting high at Elizabeth Banks' bbq party, Scott's amazing character Gordo the Righteously Indignant Canadian and Scott's other great character the guy from Foreigner in the cereal aisle.

It's literally like listening to the SMods and is brilliantly funny. Obviously it's not to be read straight through but is great to dip into when you're on the loo for example and whiles away a few minutes on the bus if your iPods broken. Great for dipping into, the fans will get the most out of it while others might read it and become interested in listening to the SModcasts themselves (available for free on iTunes and QuickStopEntertainment). It's a really funny book that's great fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical!
I have been listening to SModcast since the very first one and was so excited when the book came out. It is transcribed almost perfectly with the uhhs, ahhs, etc (much to Mosier's dismay I'm sure).

If you're already a fan of SModcast, this book also helps as a reference if you can't remember which SModcast a certain discussion takes place in.

Buy the book! If you like the book, download the whole versions from itunes or [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny!
This book is hilarious, if you like SModcast you probably will enjoy reading it as well. The book arrived in excellent condition and in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesomly funny!
Almost lost control of my bodily functioning while reading some of these! Great fun and makes me wish I was there to hear these discussions. Any way we can get an audio version? :) ... Read more

Product Description
From the award-winning screenwriter and director -- a collection of irreverent and hilarious rants on the absurdity of just about everything.

In 1994, Kevin Smith debuted his low-budget film Clerks at the Sundance Film Festival. It became an instant cult classic and made Smith the top dog of the indie film world. Next he was an executive producer of the smash hit Good Will Hunting and quickly earned the title "King of Gen X Cinema" from Time magazine. He appeared on Charlie Rose, Politically Incorrect, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and currently holds a regular spot on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno hosting a segment entitled "Roadside Attractions." Fans of his films will instantly recognize Smith as Silent Bob -- the character with no lines. And last year Smith began writing a hilarious monthly column covering popular culture for Arena magazine.

In this side-splitting rant-fest, Kevin Smith waxes rhapsodic and obnoxious on everything from his platonic infatuation with Ben Affleck to his bloodcurdling hatred of Britney Spears, from his shocking diagnosis with morbid obesity to the fatal flaws of SpiderMan -- all done in his inimitable, raunchy style.

Silent Bob Speaks interweaves the best of the Arena columns with a new introduction by the author to produce Smith’s first collection of bawdy, over-the-top essays, guaranteed to make his legions of fans choke on their Cheerios. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrow this one...
I can't remember the last time I read a book that started off so well and ended up annoying me so much that I didn't bother to finish it! Kevin Smith's disarmingly candid opinions and anecdotes are mostly hilarious here, right up until the toe-curlingly sycophantic Ben Affleck chapter. Smith then goes on to give Tom Cruise the same boot-licking treatment a few chapters later. It's probably worth bearing in mind that as a collection of previously published articles and interviews "Silent Bob Speaks" was inevitably going to be a bit uneven, though.

Don't get me wrong - I love his films, and this a very funny book in places. But if you want my advice, don't buy it - borrow it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book of rambles
The book is basically full or atricles Kevin did for magazines or on websites. They comtain some really funny stories and any Kevin Smith fan would love his humor and notice some of these jokes also featured in his Q&A vids: Evening with Kevin Smith (1, 2, and 3).

5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith is a GENIUS!
Being a HUGE Kevin Smith fan, I knew that I was going to love this book. But even I was surprised when I had finished reading it by only the 2nd night. I couldnt put it down! The man is one of THE best story tellers out there, whether it be fiction or non-fiction. Hes honest and humble and really comes down to the level of his readers. I enjoyed it immensely. Hence my visit on to Amazon.com today to purchase his newest release!! Buy this book "sirs".

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quick Enjoyable Collection
Read it in an afternoon and enjoyed it a lot! If you're a fan of K. Smith you'll appreciate it. Kevin puts out a lot of great material. Also, check out his podcast "Smodcast". Type SMODCAST into iTunes for a FREE, yes FREE, audio show with Scott Mosier. It's some classic stuff and you'll bust a gut laughing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith Fan? You Will Love This
Kevin Smith proves himself as a very good writer once again with this collection of his blogs. There is a lot of behind the scenes information given as well as his likes and dislikes when it comes to movies and celebrities. The stories range from funny to serious, but all keep the interest of the reader the entire time. If you are a fan of the "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD series, this is basically the same kind of thing but in book form. The stories are different than on the DVDs, so I didn't mean that the same stories are told that you have heard a thousand times.

So basically, if you are a fan of Smith, this book is a must have that you won't be able to put down. If you're not a fan, why bother with this in the first place? Fans will find enjoyment, but I doubt those Clerks haters will have their opinions changed. This is for the fans, and fans...I can't say it enough, you will like this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Seen 'em all?Read this book.Otherwise...
I enjoy reading about film, and had previously read (and enjoyed) "Shooting to Kill" by Christine Vachon and David Edelstein and "Down and Dirty Pictures" by Peter Biskind, so I thought I this would be a great book for me.

I haven't seen many of the "classic" indies detailed in the book (i.e. Slacker, She's Gotta Have It, Go Fish, etc.), so I had trouble understanding (and sometimes paying attention to) parts of Pierson's book.I did learn a lot (and I'm happy about that), but I was also confused much of the time.It would have certainly helped if I would have seen the movies he was detailing. He didn't write the book for people like me.He probably wrote it for people with already strong backgrounds in independent film.

I predict it's a really good read if . . . you have seen loads (i mean loads!) of indie films since the "Stranger Than Paradise" (1984) and you already know about the directors and distributors of the post-1984 indie scene.

If you don't feel like your an industry expert just yet, trying reading "Shooting to Kill" or "Down and Dirty Pictures."They assume much less about the reader. Then watch the "classics" mentioned in these books. Then read this book. You'll appreciate it much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revised version published as Spike Mike Reloaded
Spike, Mike, Slackers & Dykes was revised and published in January 2004 under the title: Spike Mike Reloaded. It contains a new foreward by Kevin Smith, new chapter by John Pierson, and a new dialogue between the two of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars If You're Going to Sundance ...
The "A Guided Tour Across a Decade ..." portion of the title is a little misleading to some.

While he talks to and about Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Moore, Jim Jaramusch, Spike Lee and others, and while it's a first account of the American independent film movement circa 1990s - this is NOT a book about their films (either as analysis or critique) or them (as directors and their techniques or merely celeb gossip).

This is a book about the trials and tribulations of being a producer's rep.

There are two types of people who should read this book and would find it useful.

If you plan on directing or producing a movie - consider this book a MUST READ - film distribution 101 reading.

He talks in relevant detail about representing some of the most important American independent films of the 1990s including SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, CLERKS, ROGER & ME and others. While he gives an almost day-by-day blow of some of these films as they travel from film festival circuit to deal making to publicity tours - the real value is are the details about the process that one can expect as an independent film maker.

Now, a decade later, many things have changed (especially the financing numbers and studio/distribution situation today versus the 1990s) - what hasn't changed is the overall process of what you might encounter and expect. Here's a great opportunity to read what they encountered and what lessons you might learn from them.

The detailed summary on a deal-memo and points that they negotiated regarding the distribution contract and revenues from distribution and home video - are worth the price of a USC Film School class (not the whole education - the books not that great - just a excellent class :-)

If you are a film fanatic and want to learn a portion of the nuts and bolts of the process of film festivals and independent distribution - you should find this book of interest.

Why only three stars? Deduct one star for ... this book would've been more interesting if we got more of a first hand account from the directors and their feelings during the process along with John Pierson's.

Deduct another star because the industry and the financial numbers and the players have changed so the details of the situations are not very useful.

But the foundation of Sundance and other buzz-worthy festivals reached the public eye during this period so if you're going (or thinking of going) to Sundance, Toronto, et al - get up to speed on all that's transpired so far.

Again, this is a MUST READ for aspiring directors and producers. For others, it all depends on how interested you are in the history of the business process of indepedent film-making ...

2-0 out of 5 stars too much horn-tooting
What could've been a good guide to modern indie film is bogged down by Pierson's relentless and self-serving tooting of his own horn.Who cares?!?What we really want is the inside story of all these independent films and filmmakers.Pierson seemed to lose track of who the stars of his book should be.I also found the author's writing and his overall knowledge of movies to be lacking.A much better book on the same broad topic is "Celluloid Mavericks" by Greg Merritt, which covers the entire history of American independent film from a much more literate and balanced perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely for Kevin Smith fans
Although I'm a big fan of indie films, I found this book a bit dull. Not that I'm looking for a typical Hollywood put on the glitz and glamour type of book, but the book basically deals with how the author put togetherfinancing and got distribution for some indie films. It definitely couldhave been told in a more exciting way.The best thing about it is theinterviews with Kevin Smith that are interspersed through the first half orso of the book. Then, they drop off, and I did as well. The author isdefinitely a huge fan of Kevin Smith, which is great, as there are a lot ofKevin's journal entries included about when Clerks was at Sundance. If youlike Kevin Smith, this is a good read, if only for the interviews and thechapter about Clerks. If not, then well...you might like it, but it's alittle dull.If you haven't seen Slacker, Go Fish, Roger and Me, Clerks,She's Gotta Have It, Amongst Friends, Reservoir Dogs, etc., then you mighthave a hard time as well. ...
