Product Description
Candace Slater's new book focuses on narratives concerning Fray Leopoldo de Alpandeire (1864-1956), a Capuchin friar from Granada and probably the most popular nonconsecrated saint today in all of Spain. In tracing the emergence of a group of contemporary legends about Fray Leopoldo, Slater discusses both the stories she tape-recorded in the streets of Granada and the friar's official biography. She underscores the essential pluralism of the tales, their undercurrent of resistance to institutional authority, and their deep concern for the relationship between past and present. Bearing witness to the subtlety and resilience of even the most apparently conservative folk-literary forms, these stories are not only about the role of saints and miracles in an increasingly secular and industrial society but, first and foremost, also about the legacy of the Franco years. ... Product Description
Each year nearly one million people journey to Juazeiro do Norte, in the backlands of Brazil, to pay their respects to Padre Cicero Romao Batista. A rich oral literature has developed from the stories of miracles attributed to the priest, who died in 1934.

Candace Slater's study, based on some two hundred hours of on-site tape recordings, collects and analyzes the best-known tales. By comparing versions of the stories told by residents and pilgrims, Slater illuminates the dynamics of legend formation. Although the two groups' accounts of the tales are similar in many respects, examination reveals subtle but fundamental differences. Residents describe a large number of scattered miraculous episodes, and their narratives reflect a high degree of personal involvement. In contrast, the pilgrims' psychic as well as geographic distance from the priest often leads them to fashion more coherent stories, even though their tales are based on a smaller number of incidents.

Slater's perceptive analysis of the Padre Cicero stories and her sensitive relation of the tales to the lives of the tellers provide a privileged illustration of the emergence of an unofficial saints life, with all the force of a communal myth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Christology of Revelation
This book examines the Chritology of Revelation by looking at three different images of Christ in Revelation; "one like the son of man", the slain lamb, and the divine warrior. The first part of Slater's book covers "one like a son of man". for over 100 pages Slater develops and explains this image. Personally, I thought the discussion was too long. Slater mentions a lot of other concepts besides the son of man imagery in the first part of the book, but fascinating as many of his insights were, I did not see why he mentioned them.

I enjoyed his writing on the slain lamb image. He makes a good case as to how the lamb imagery may have functioned in the first century Asiatic Christian community.

I wasn't really thrilled about this book. While interesting, it went on too long about the son of man imagery. I also found aggravating the too many "I agree" statements. Often Slater will list various positions scholars have on Revelation and say "I agree." But he does not really say why he agrees.

Maybe a scholar with a PhD would enjoy this book more. I found it dry; albeit, I did learn a great deal. If you do not mind a book that is rather dull reading, you still may appreciate this book for he does often do a good job of explaining the Chritological images in Revelation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for someone learning about paganism and its rituals
I truly enjoyed this book,as i am learning about paganism its a great start as its informative and its rituals seem easy. haven't tried them yet, but will definitely do so soon. thanks Amazon for sending the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a book of pagan rituals
it was/is just what i've been looking 4. i'm solitary and recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the price!
I find the book to be a solid reference for several reasons. First, it gives the reader rituals designed for both group and solitary practitioners with specific information for each ritual that are not generally found in other books, such as where to conduct each ritual, what to place on the altars, what to wear, whether or not an altar is needed, and what should be placed on the altar besides decorations and standard tools. I also like the fact that the rituals include ones for marriage, divination, purification, healing and that the book also has a Rite for the Dead. The fact that the book has a short section explaining devotion, evocation, invocation and prayer, another section on meditation and an exercise for rhythmic breathing makes it a must for any beginner in magickal practice.

Criticisms of the book tend to center on the fact that it is primarily Wiccan in perspective, group oriented and Goddess centered. I am not sure if these criticisms are based on initial reactions to the first section of the book and if those critics did not read the book in its entirety, or if the book is not practical for beginners. Obviously the book is not solely group oriented, and although the rituals given are Wiccan and Goddess-driven, the book provides the reader with enough solid information to design rituals for their own specific Path. Perhaps it is the title of the book that is misleading, but anyone who picks up a book of rituals looking for formulas that provide them with the perfect ritual for every occasion will always be disappointed. The Book of Pagan Rituals is geared toward giving beginners something to practice and intermediates with something to create. Advanced practioners will find ideas, information and concrete teaching tools in its pages.

There are two things in this book that make me continue to pull it off my bookshelf after two decades. One is the glossary of terms used in herbalism found in the Herbs section which defines terms like "febrifuge" and "diaphoretic". The second is the Ritual Outline which provides 10 easy steps necessary to design a ritual. The book is well worth buying just for these things, but The Book of Pagan Rituals is a fount of information and insight for anyone interested in Paganism.

4-0 out of 5 stars dated maybe but still
Ok this is an old book. It has been around for a long time and is somewhat dated.Yes it is of value for the historical role and place.

And yet

The rituals are clear and tight and moving and easily performed. But there are other books which have still more rituals at least as good

and yet...

Maybe the most attractive points of the book are the two essays-One is somewhat dated but the second, Pagan Musings. remains a beautiful expression of hope. It brings us back to a more idealistic time. Perhaps a time we long forand can work toward.

Frankly I think it is worth it just for this one essay.

Yes get it for the rituals and for the history. But on those days when you are running a bit low on inspiration and are a bit down, Take it out and read Pagan Musings again. It might give you what you need to go on.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of better books out there
If you already have a good grounding you can fill in the gaps yourself and customize the rites, but I think that fewbooks are better than this one. As for earler review i amsure things have changed with the times, but some of books are just coming out are rehashing of same things that was written before and by far not complete, when i came to craft in 1991 ,not many books was out and i have been buying some of new books coming out. I found good infomation in them and sure this book is dianic driven buthave ya look at ed fitch's " A book of shadows" nice book but just as biased as heck.My point is, all books have a opinion and This book will give outlines that show how to design rites and Best and most powerful spells come from you. as for the bookmetioned by another reviewer ofPagan Rites of Passage!(By Pauline Campanelli). sure it's great book if it was still in print which it's is not!!! so ya out of luck on it unless ya get it used, lucky i got one I would look at some ofbooks of old and new and find what works for you. paganism and witchcraft has changed over the years and for better and some for the worse. My advice Just use your own judgement and rememberall books have opinions and there is no one book on any topic because people all have diffent views and tradtions Being judgementmental has no place in paganism and limits the person in my opinion.
Good luck on your path

Blessed Be; ... Read more

Product Description
The ancient Athenians were "quarrelsome as friends, treacherous as neighbors, brutal as masters, faithless as servants, shallow as lovers--all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity." Thus writes Philip Slater in this classic work on narcissism and family relationships in fifth-century Athenian society. Exploring a rich corpus of Greek mythology and drama, he argues that the personalities and social behavior of the gods were neurotic, and that their neurotic conditions must have mirrored the family life of the people who perpetuated their myths. The author traces the issue of narcissism to mother-son relationships, focusing primarily on the literary representation of Hera and the male gods and showing how it related to devalued women raising boys in an ambitious society dominated by men. "The role of homosexuality in society, fatherless families, working mothers, women's status, and violence, male pride, and male bonding--all these find their place in Slater's analysis, so honestly and carefully addressed that we see our own societal dilemmas reflected in archaic mythic narratives all the more clearly."--Richard P. Martin, Princeton University ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening look behind the scenes
I read this book as an undergraduate at Berkeley. The book really opened my mind and affected me deeply.A large part of our civilization is based upon Greek philosophy, and we generally idolize them as intellectual heroes. But Slater's work investigates how the Greek family structure, with its extremely repressed women, affected Greek male psychology, and how this is reflected in their mythic structure.Slater's revelations made me re-think the whole Western investment in the Greek ethos. ...
