Product Description
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood—the world of the red tent.It begins with the story of her mothers—Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah—the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land.Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytellingwith a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.
Amazon.com Review
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.

"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Red Tent
This was a book that was one that you couldn't put down , it takes you into the charaters roleand I would love sharing it with my women's group easy to discuss with group of friends a must read for every woman.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its best
She really brings to life what Bible times might have been like ~ very believable. After reading the Red Tent, I re-read the story in Genesis. While she expanded the details and took license (like the existence of the "red tent" itself), it's amazing how closely it follows the Biblical account. A good read for mothers and daughters to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Red Tent: A Must Read!
Highly recommend this book as a study of not only Biblical Old Testament history, but for insight into womens' roles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biblical Story from a different point of View ...
Often, in Scripture, we hear only the words of men. The voices of women are silenced.

This is a fictional account of the story of Jacob and his family written in the voice of Dinah. While it is entirely fictional, and is only based loosely on the characters in Scripture, it is a fascinating read.

Why DID Rachael steal her father's idols? And what happened to them after? Did Rachael and Leah ever accept the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

And what happened to Dinah after her brothers killed an entire town, including the man who wanted to marry her? Even more, how did the neighboring towns view Abraham after that? Was he given respect, or did they seek revenge?

I give it 3 stars because it does stray far from the account we have. And yet it is provocative enough that I find it worth reading, if only to ask the questions that have been left unanswered for so many centuries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not "Like New"
I paid $25+ for this item so the least they could have done was to take off the Goodwill price of $3.06 that was still on the torn, taped up box. Definitely was not "like new" as it was advertised. ... Read more

Having read and enjoyed this book many, many years ago I eagerly awaited a renewal of the pleasure. However was not to be despite the book providers assurance it was in "very good" condition was something of a misnomer--------in fact a whole segment of pages was missingviz pages 161 to 192 inc

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Gold!
There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people where you just know they would approve. David Niven always seemed to play the good guy, the hero, the sort of person to whom we would all wish to aspire. Writing about those people with whom he worked and came into contact was, however, a serious departure from acting - and could easily have gone so horribly wrong.

In this book, however, he confirms his credentials as a writer and pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes. Not once does he stoop to the level of gossip monger, not once does attack another person.

Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of writing humour.

Was it me, or did I detect a certain disappointment from within his own relationship?, or was it that David Niven was far too much the perfect gentleman to describe such things.

If you are a fan of the olden days - the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy this book. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy this book. In fact, I cannot think of anyone who would not enjoy such an excellent product.
