5-0 out of 5 stars The practical art of suicide assesment
The book is very usefull for clinicians, it gives you real good tips about when a person is in real risk to comitt suicide. I think it's a great tool for clinical staff to have in treating people who suffer from any kind of mental health problem, as well as for students that are in training. It's wrriten very clear and it's easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book for mental health professionals
This book is very useful for mental health professionals. Even if you're not doing sucide assessment, per se, it's good to know what questions to ask, and how to ask them, of ALL clients!

The book is very well organized and well written. Although I've only read about half of it, I think I've learned a lot, and am looking forward to reading it to the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' book for clinical psychologists and other mental health professionals
Dr. Shea shares great insights into the interview process for suicidal patients.Too often there is a reliance on demographic or symptomatic factors to determine suicidal risk.Dr. Shea convincingly brings us back to the realization that suicide is an individual choice and the risk of suicide can only be estimated by understanding the individual's thought processes regarding suicide.Theorectically sound and practical book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide
This was an excellent guide to suicide assessment and I highly recommend this book to any mental health professional. Beyond that I think this book is valuable for any clinicial who may one day have to talk to somebody about suicide. Well written and organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy reading
I'm currently in school for addiction counseling and felt this book would be good to read. It is well written and easy to read, with a lot of good advice. As a counselor in preparation I know I will be having sessions with people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, & while I know this doesn't qualify a person to do suicide assessments it certainly gives a good method for drawing out as much information as possible. It makes me feel a little more comfortable about the job I am going to be doing. ... Read more

Product Description

Written for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, case managers, and clinical pharmacists, this pioneering book is the first of its kind devoted to the delicate interface between clinical interviewing and medication adherence. Shawn Christopher Shea, MD takes the reader on a compelling and eminently practical exploration of how our words powerfully impact on whether or not patients are interested in taking medications and staying on them.

Dr. Shea shares over forty specific interviewing techniques that are equally useful for medications for all disease states from hypertension, diabetes, and CHF to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The interviewing tips—brilliantly illustrated with their exact phrasings and all of their clinical nuances—were culled by Dr. Shea from the input of the thousands of front-line clinicians who have attended his popular workshops on "improving medication interest" given throughout the United States and Canada at over 200 locations.

Improving Medication Adherence: How to Talk with Patients About Their Medications is a standout favorite with medical and nursing students in their "Introduction to Clinical Skills" courses because of its immediate practicality, eloquent yet disarmingly witty writing style, and remarkable brevity. It is equally appreciated by seasoned clinicians with years of experience who, as Dr. Shea writes, are keenly aware that "our science is always at its best, when it is held in the hands of compassion and enhanced by clinical skill."

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any clinician
Any type of clinician that treats patients with medications or any other type of treatment, needs to read this book. I am a psychiatrist out of residency for 5 yrs. It is so good that med schools should require it. Sudents and residents should read it early on. Every person who reads this will find many ways to connect w/ clients and improve outcomes.

It is hard to put down. I got mine for free from a drug rep. I can't remember the mfg. Ask around until you find one willing to get it.

Just do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medication Adherence: The Key to Successful Therapy
As an internist who has specialized in pulmonary medicine, and who also enjoys teaching medical and nursing students, I have fallen in love with this timelyand intriguing book. When a reviewer tells you a book is unique, it's usually not true. When they tell you it is remarkably practical, it's often an exaggeration. When they say it is beautifully written and fun to read and a "must buy," you know it's hype. Except with this book. "Improving Medication Adherence: How to Talk with Patients About Their Medications" by Shawn Christopher Shea is unique, remarkably practical, beautifully written, fun to read, and I honestly believe that every medical and nursing student in the world should read it.
As physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and clinical pharmacists, we all know the critical importance of improving medication adherence. In this book, Dr. Shea's third outstanding textbook, a highly acclaimed innovator in clinical interviewing has taken the time to ask thousands of primary care clinicians and mental health professionals what specific interviewing "tricks of the trade" help them to motivate patients to take medications as prescribed. Nothing "Ivory Towered" here.He has taken the best of these "best practices" from front-line clinicians and woven them into a logical framework for enhancing what he calls "medication interest."
With a lively and concise writing style, Shea takes the reader into an engaging exploration of exactly how patients both intellectually and emotionally decide whether or not to take a medication and ultimately to stay on it. With numerous case examples he shows how to use a framework for understanding calledthe "Choice Triad" to build a way of collaboratively working with patients to enhance their medication interest and ultimate follow-through. In a simplified format, the Choice Triad suggests that a patient will choose to take a medication if he or she holds the following three beliefs: !) the patient believes something is wrong, 2) the patient is motivated to use a medication to do something about it and 3) the patient is personally convinced that the pros outweigh the cons. If any of these beliefs are missing, nonadherence is likely.
Shea, with remarkably keen insight shows exactly how patients navigate this triad. More important, and what truly makes this book unique, is his gifted ability to translate these principles into a series of over forty practical interviewing techniques which clinicians can immediately apply to their practices. Trust me, they work! Two of my favorite techniques are the "Inquiry into Lost Dreams" and "The Trap-Door Question." Moreover, they can be easily taught and students' competency levels tested. The book should be a required standard in Introduction to Medicine or Introduction to Nursing courses. Students love it.
Finally I just want to add that the sense of compassion and the sense of humor that is gently woven throughout the book makes it, in my opinion, one of the few modern classics on the physician and nurse/patient alliance. I can't put it any better than the author of the Foreword to the book, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop who wrote "This little book, in my opinion, is destined to fill a giant void in the training of all medical and nursing students, as well as becoming a classic read for experienced clinicians in search of the art of medicine. My advice is simple - read it."
Ditto for me.

Product Description

Everything about this dynamic book–from its engaging writing and examples, to its bold graphics and photos, to its innovative learning pedagogy and interactive assessment–is designed to get students to participate: in their learning, in the classroom, and in all aspects of American politics.

American Government instructors overwhelmingly cite student apathy as the single biggest problem in their course; students are simply not engaged in the material and do not believe that the government can affect and enrich their lives.  Lead author Dan Shea, founder of the Center for Political Participation, along with co-authors Joanne Connor Green and Christopher E. Smith teamed up to write an American Government text that helps students experience the impact of government in their daily lives and inspires them to work to affect that government in return.  Written with the belief that the American Government course is critically important for our students–as well as for the long-term stability of the democratic process–Living Democracy helps students draw connections between course topics and current events and find a role for themselves in politics and government.

The text’s innovative approach to American government presents the dynamic nature of our country's democratic process more accurately than any other book currently on the market, while offering all of the material found in a comprehensive, traditionally organized government text within an active framework.

Now in its second edition, this attention-getting text is building on its message of participation:  improvements to its innovative pedagogical system with even more assessment opportunities help students participate more fully in their own learning process, while new Student Profiles of politically active young people from around the world continue to promote students’ political participation.   New coverage highlights the events surrounding the 2008 Election including the massive growth in voter participation.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I bought it for my college studying. Expected that it would be so boring. Also it has overwhelming amount of terminology you physically are not able to memorize, it explains very precisely which rights are granted to us by the Constitution of USA, how government is functioning, what is behind those Amendments we hear about, how any law makes it way to people, etc. This book is a great source for understanding of the political processes in this country. Definitely recommend it to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars very fast...good
it was very fast and the book is in very good condition...altough we found some highliting on it and the seller said it didnt have any....
other than that everything was great..thankss!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Book had a good description that matched up when I recieved it.I expidited it and recieved it in three days.Good product!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to excite young people to become involved
First off, not only am I using this political science textbook for my political science 110 class on national government and politics, but my teacher for the class is Professor Dan Shea (the main writer). Professor Shea said on the first day of class that he wanted to create a textbook that would give young people something to enjoy in politics. He wanted a textbook that would show college students how their voice does make a difference in our country's future.

In the overview chapter, Professor Shea and colleagues write about Pathways for Change (i.e. elections, lobbying, courts, grassroots mobilization, and cultural change). They write in the introduction to the first chapter that young people were the ones who gave now President Barack H. Obama his first victory in Iowa. The writers note that without young people wishing for the change Senator Obama promised to bring, Hillary Clinton would almost certainly have won the Democratic nomination.

The cover itself conveys the main theme of the book: that young people can live democracy like wearing a tee-shirt. Professor Shea said that while most American government textbooks have pictures of grand buildings on their cover, he wanted a simple cover to show that each person can live the principles of democracy with which our Founding Fathers believed and Jefferson wrote, "...that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, which among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Note: This textbook is slightly more progressive in nature than many high school political science textbooks I have read. The writers (including Professor Shea) drills into the reader that our country has made major mistakes in its past. It explores these mistakes. Therefore, for people that want a textbook that pretends that America has never gone through rough periods where we did not follow the ideaof "all people are equal" (ex: discrimination against people of minority races, women, the poor), you may find this textbook a bit offensive. In other words, Rush Limbaugh probably would not endorse this textbook. ... Read more

Product Description

Delivering IT projects on time and within budget, while maintaining privacy, security, and accountability, remains one of the major public challenges of our time. In the four short years since the publication of the second edition of the Handbook of Public Information Systems, the field of public information systems has continued to evolve. This evolution has elucidated many issues that public sector managers face as they wrestle with the information age. Completely revised and updated, the third edition addresses all aspects of public IT projects while emphasizing a common theme: Information technology initiatives are neither simple nor routine. These initiatives carry substantial implications for democratic values, policy development, strategic planning, and the mobilization of human capital.

The third edition provides further insight into significant issues such as:

  • Network governance
  • Cross organizational integration and operability
  • Enterprise architecture design, development, and management
  • The impact of information technology on government service delivery

With articles contributed by experts in the field, the coverage includes 21st century public information systems, modern IT needs, and the development of e-governments. The book examines the growth and use of information technology within and among government agencies and organizations. It examines current policy issues, offers case studies, and demonstrates successful public sector applications. Each section leads to a holistic approach that emphasizes communication, understanding, and participation from top management, technology teams, and end users.

The more we learn about e-government and e-governance issues, the more it becomes apparent that the interrelationships between political environments, organizational environments, and technological capabilities are often difficult to summarize and predict. As the field advances, our understanding of the complexity of the relevant issues increases, and more guidance becomes available to administrators. This book puts you on the path to a better understanding of the issues and successful implementation of IT projects.

Written with the belief that the American Government course is critically important for our students—as well as for the long-term stability of the democratic process—Living Democracy helps students draw connections between course topics and current events and find a role for themselves in politics and government.

The text’s innovative approach to American government presents the dynamic nature of our country's democratic process more accurately than any other book currently on the market, while offering all of the material found in a comprehensive, traditionally organized government text within an active framework.  The Texas Brief edition includes the exact same coverage as the Texas version but with in a more streamlined format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry Text book- Good buy!
The text book came to me in the same condition as was mentioned in the website. Quick shipping and great shopping experience.
I would definitely buy again from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book not only for chemistry students
With this book (with much older edition) I have started my adventure with an organic chemistry. Organic Chemistry is a specific part of chemistry, which is regarded as an extremely boring subject, where you have to learn everything by heart only. With this book it is not like that, because its chapters are built and written properly. Also bases of the chemistry are shortly but nicely explained at the beginning of this good book on organic chemistry. This is a book created not only for students, who meet organic chemistry during their studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good supplement to other textbooks.
A fine textbook in its own right, Morrison's OChem textbook places great emphasis on chemical analysis and experimental evidence to prove the basic organic chemistry theories. Because these are often missing in other textbooks, the book is a great supplement to more modern textbooks. I do not suggest using only this book for beginning OChem students, as the text is rather dense, pictures somewhat sparse, and the graphics and images themselves rather crude (more mainstream textbooks offer some great computer graphics to illustrate reaction mechanisms, electrostatic potential maps, etc). Again, beginning OChem students should purchase "more modern" college class texts (Vollhardt and Schore's OChem, Wade's OChem, etc.) and can consider purchasing this book to supplement their ochem learning. =]

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Organic Chemistry Text...Morrison & Boyd are Rockstars
I took Organic Chemistry I and II at UMCP back in the mid-80's and this was the text that accompanied the courses. Very concise and intelligently written.. Literally a joy to read(literally!). The book never once felt boring and uninspired. And there are a couple of hilarious entries somewhere in it. In retrospect, I miss the experience of this subject and the tremendously gratifying rush of accomplishing A's in both courses (back then).Thank you Morrison and Boyd for doing such beautiful work on this text..and the memories!

5-0 out of 5 stars I first used it in 1967!
I received my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1980, and this was one of the great books that, along with equally great professors (including L.M. Jackman of NMR fame, T.E. Young, and N.D. Heindel, former ACS president), made it possible. An interesting side note, with the flap today about trans-fatty acids: I remember that as far back as 1967, there were questions about the long-term safety of consuming these isomerization by-products of catalytic hydrogenation of vegetable oils, and I'm almost certain it was in Morrison & Boyd that I read this caveat.Unfortunately, the junk science of for-profit industries tends to shout down rational scientific concerns. ...
