Admit it. You always thought eloping sounded kind of romantic, right? Too bad everyone expects you to have The Big Wedding -- the kind you always thought you wanted. Well, you can! There are many different ways to elope -- and not all of them involve running off in the middle of the night. 4-0 out of 5 stars Some Great Advice and a New Way of Thinking
Far more couples than anyone might suspect, would, if they were honest with themselves, reaize that a planned elopement could / would have saved them endless headaches and a lot of money. Elopement is not just two wide-eyed teenagers, running away from home to get married. It can be a very respectable, honorable thing, if done in the right way. This book gives you a lot of advice on what is the right way and what is the wrong way.

Every family and couple is different of course, but the truth is, for most families and friends, all they really want is for the both of you to be happy. And if they thought a small wedding of 6 people, in a favorite destination of yours, on two weeks notice, was what would make you happy... they'd want you to do it.

Don't be afraid to offend or hurt feelings, because chances are good elopement would not offend or hurt anyone's feelings, if you plan and communicated your plan properly. It's not for everyone of course, but it's a thought raised in the minds of far more couples than will ever let on. Think about it, read the book, and decided if it's for you. There are 100 different ideas here that will spur 100 more and might just result in your dream wedding. Don't discount it because of the taboo associated with the word "elope"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I wish I could find more books on this topic. This is the best I have found so far...I recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Elopment Book When You Don't Know Where to Begin
The book gives creative and fun ideas for couples looking for something different. I would highly recommend the book to any couple not sure about a traditional wedding.I loved that it also gave resources such as web sites and phone numbers.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good start.
Eloping has always sounded like a good option but i never really gave it any credit untill i read this book. This book is filled will enough information to get you to believe that eloping can be done and also provides you with enough examples of peoples who went throught with it. For some one, like me, who is just starting with the idea this is a great book. Its filled with stories, successes, and hints on what to do and avoide - as well as some initial resources to start your research with. For those who have already excepted the idea and have done some research you will not find any thing new.
You will deffinitly need to do more on you own but this is a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are uncertain about eloping and how to
This book was a great for helping to make the decision of whether to elope or not. If you still want the "big wedding" there are lots of creative ideas in this book of how to include your family etc. It even has information on places to elope! If you are considering a destination wedding, elopement or even just a non-traditional wedding with less stress read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic basic guide to Zen thought in the martial arts.
As a life-time student of the martial arts, including the various warrior philosophies which shape an individual's thoughts and actions, I found this book informative and refreshing. It is broken down into five parts.Part one covers the foundation of Samurai Zen.Part two deals with the refinement of the senses.Part three explains how to focus the body and mind.Part four teaches the pathway to power and the final section goes into the results of consciousness. There are also numerous exercises to develop your mind and body awareness. In conclusion, if you are seeking an excellent informational introduction to Zen and how it relates to the way of the warrior(Bushido), this book is for you.Rating:5 Stars.Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, Martial Art Myths, Season of the warrior: a poetic tribute to warriors, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Tanto-Jutsu Manual, Wakizashi-Jutsu manual, Never Trust a Politician).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. Read Between the Lines
I have read over the Amazon.com reviews on Samurai Zen and I believe that they are all enlightening and present a unique perspective from the point of view of each reviewer.Though these reviews each present an interesting appraisal of the book, there is a serious problem with the review placed here on November 11, 2003.This review must be addressed as it presents untrue and incorrect facts about Master Scott Shaw and his book Samurai Zen. Not only does the reviewer make a completely false statement, which he has no basis for, about the training background of Master Shaw, but he also states incorrect facts about the book. These falsehoods must be addressed.

First of all, certainlly Dr. Scott Shaw is best known for his involvement and long list of published works on the Korean martial arts. This being stated, he lives much of every year in Japan, and has done so for the past twenty-five years. Not only did he train in the Japanese arts, from the late 1970's forward, but he has long held training seminars in Japan and the West on, not only the Korean martial arts, but the Japanese martial arts, as well.Furthermore, as anyone who has studied the historic evolution of the modern Korean martial arts understands, these arts were born from the Japanese arts. Thus, the two can never be seperated.

I find that it is often the case that a martial artist is so locked into their particular system of training that they believe that it is the only true style. From this, some of these practitioners falsely attack others who present a different approach to the martial arts. This is obviously the case with this particular reviewer. He clearly states that he has only studied Iaido for four years. That is no comparsion to the four decades of training possessed by Master Shaw.Furthermore, as anyone who has studied the sword arts understands, there are numerous Ryu or schools that teach varying methods of sword play. So, to say one person is wrong by the style of technique they demonstrate, clearly illustrates a complete lack of understanding, as there exists a plethora of schools on the sword arts: Japanese, Korean, and otherwise.

In closing, to read this book as soley a book on Iaido is completely missing the point.Only a very small porition of this book is focused on the physical techniques of the martial arts,This book is about the subtle realms of the martial arts and how they can cause the practitioner to raise themselves to the higher mind.In other words, to understand this book, you must step beyond the obvious realms of physical techniques and read it as a manual for meditation, the way, I am sure, Dr. Shaw had hoped it would be received.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
... First of all in severial pictures, his grip was incorrect.Secondly, the text disagreed with the pictures. For example, the text stated to go down on the right knee first and in the picture he was on his left.No the picture wasn't reveresed.I checked the sword was in the propper place.Speaking of the sword. When he placed the sword with in the Obi, he used his left hand with the right hand on the belt.As I have been taught and all of the other books on the subject have shown and stated, you use the left thumb to hook the belt and the right hand slides the sword home. His terminology was correct, but that was about it....As far as the spiritual part of the book, it was good, however that does not make up for the errors of the sword. For the record, I have studied Iaido and Isshin-ryu Karate for about four years. Now if someone is interested in books on Zen or Iaido, I would suggest.Zen and the Sword, Flashing Steel, and Iaido: the art of the Japanese Sword. To name just a few of the good books on the subject.

Thank you for your time

A Martial Artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book. What I find most appealing about Samurai Zen is how the meditation techniques presented within its pages are so accessible. They are detailed in a manner that they can be practiced by everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen for the Martial Artist
This is a very good book. I think what Scott Shaw does a great job integrating the spirituality inherent in Bushido into the modern practice of swordsmanship. This is inspiring and proivdes an element to the martialarts which few people in the west are exposed to. I try to do this at myown Dojo. Westerners have a hard time understanding.I think Samurai Zenreally conveys Zen Buddhism in a exceptional manner.

Though the shawfocuses on Japan and Iaido. This book would benefit all practioners whowish to know more about Zen Buddhism.

This book should be in everyone'slibrary who wants to understand the foundations of the Japanese Samurai andwho wish to bring Zen into their everyday life. ... Read more
