4-0 out of 5 stars Careful, same book sold under two different covers/titles.
This book turned out to have (pretty much) exactly same page-by-page content as ISBN 1563894963 (The book titled just "Gen 13"). Which I already own. Don't do the mistake I did. (The only difference as far as I can tell is the cover, and the fact that some of the tilted two-page spreads are instead the right way up, and on one page only.) ... Read more

Product Description
Generally considered a sympathetic portrayer of the Canadian Indian, Duncan Campbell Scott revealed in his writings his real beliefs about the conditions and future of Canada's Native people. During his long and turbulent tenure as Deputy Superintendent General of Indian Affairs, his response to challenges such as the making of treatises in northern Ontario, land claims in British Columbia, and the status of the Six Nations underscored his beliefs that the Indians did not have any legitimate grievances and that the Department knew best. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars RISING PHOENIX.....anchored to the ground.....FREE KYLE MILLS!!
RISING PHOENIX by Kyle Mills.

What would happen if a well financed and professional organization decided to solve the United States drug problem by the logical expedient of poisoning the product??
When that indeed happens, a loose cannon FBI agent, currently on the outs with his boss, is brought back to put a stop to the drug poisoning before the public support for it grows into an unstoppable wave and the drug problem is solved.

Luckily to the relief of the Mafia, the Columbian drug cartels and liberals the world over, he succeeds.

In his introduction to the book, Tom Clancy protege Mills thanks his editor profusely for getting him through his first novel.Actually what it appears this editor did was to run the book through the politically correct check list so that no liberal nowhere would be offendedor challenged in their beliefs anyway. So in every single instance, the book studiously avoids the intriguing issues that such a concept might involve and always goes for the easy way out. Unlike with a book by say... Ian Fleming or Michael Crichton, no thought will be provoked here. Not one.

The villains are never once given any credibility and their actions are defused by having them be Christian(A stock Liberal hate figure that can be easily dismissed) former Vietnam Vets,(Likewise) sadistic sociopaths on the wrong side of the political spectrum, racist and, unlike Libs who only drink the best liquors, beer drinkers hence signaling them as lower class yahoos who did not attend Harvard or Yale.In a pathetic attempt not to appear as snobbish and class warfare propagandistic as the book is, the hero is a Texan who drinks beer too but lest any liberal think the book approves of beer drinking Texans, he is saddled with a feminist type to hold his leash and make sure he only thinks goodthink.Rather like Counselor Troi in STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION.These scenes are the weakest in the book and are close to being a literary flatline.

Everyone sits around and watches CNN with glass eyed rapture and the book occaisonally teeters very close to being a product placement for that channel. There is a caricature of what one imagines the editor must think is meant to be Bill O'Reilly but anyone familiar with that newsman would never recognize him in this book. The book's idea of conservatives---besides constantly drinking beer and making racial epithets--is incoherent and equally unrecognizable.Obviously how an editor who never leaves the West Side of Manhattan or the Village and has never actually seen a real conservative in his/her life thinks they must be. The equivalent of a Bigfoot sighting. Far away. Indistinct and frightening.

That said and in spite of the editor's best efforts, this is still a highly entertaining crime thriller that, however slightly, briefly and only a crack, opens a true keg of worms. The issues are never discussed in any meanginful way but Mills can tell a damn good story and creates a mostly believable sense of reality that frequently gets around Commissar editor particularly in its handling of the villain---one John Hobart---who safely portrayed as a sociopath---still manages to initiate and implement a strategy that knocks the drug community back onto its heels. Mills description of the logistics in preparation and the results of when the poison hits are exciting as is the US govt and the FBI efforts to track Hobart down. The suspense and the action especially the Texas style gunfight in a Baltimore alley at the end never disapoints or flags.

While it could have been so much more, it is still an engaging thriller and a fun light read for normal people. Its PC flaws only harm the book and Mills artistic integrity. Normal people will not be bothered and no liberals were hurt in the production of the novel. It is very safe for them and generally innocuous.

Recommended beach reading.

Note: I have no idea what the title means or in what way it relates to the story. Probably the editor wanted to get on the Larry Bond gravy train.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rising Phoenix
Kyle Mills has presented a somewhat different solution to our drug problem...it's rather unique but highly effective.Using Orellanin, an extract from a mushroom native to Poland, which istime-released and attacks a person's vital organs, it soon becomes almost a pandemic as thousands sicken and die.

Enter Mark Beamon, ex FBI agent who is brought back to head up the investigative team as they pursue the perpetrator of this calamitous cure, John Hobart, an ex DEA agent and security chief, who has tired of the conventional ways of fighting the drug curse, and feels enough deaths will scare users into stopping.Of course his approach does not sit well with the head of the Columbian drug cartel whose business and profits are threatened, nor the head of the Mafia who sees his profits dwindling, and last but not least the President of the U.S.A., who thinks it too drastic an approach. The final climactic scene, when the two protagonists face off, makes the whole read worth while.

E.J.Walden, author of "Operation Snow Owl"

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
Kyle Mills is a very gifted writer. Smooth pacing and entertaining scenes on almost every page. This one is outstanding for a debut novel. I think Fade still stands as my favorite by him though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stranger than reality.
Reality #1: over the past 20 years, there have been at least 3 outbreaks of poisonings related to contamination of street drugs. In none of the outbreaks could a "reason' for the substitution or addition of one drug be determined.Additionally, the perpetrator or perpetrators have never been caught.
Reality #2: "unintentional" deaths from drug abuse outnumber deaths from homicides
Reality #3: drug abuse crossess all economic and demographic boundaries

Along comes Kyle Mills to put a new spin on reality with his gripping novel of intrigue and science.Could his fiction really be reality? When a rogue DEA agent and a frustrated, do good, clergyman join forces and poison the street drug stream, chaos is produced when dead drug abusers start piling up in hospitals throughout the world.Guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book if you have anything important which needs to be done!
Annually my Christmas gift to friends is the best book I have read during the previous year. Kyle Mills' first published work was my choice during an earlier year, and I would encourage anyone who enjoys a thrilling almost real-life scenario to add Rising Phoenix to your list of books to read. However, I will give you the same warning I voice to whomever I share this book with:Do not begin reading if you have anything important which needs to be done, as I can assure you that once you complete the first chapter, whatever you deem important will have to wait.
