63. Behind the Labels: Garment Workers on U.S. Saipan (Video Tape: 46 Minutes) (VHS)

Paperback: 1 Pages (2001)

Product Description
1 Video Tape. Saipan is the capital, and most populated island, of the chain of 14 Northern Mariana Islands in Micronesia. The islands are a U.S. territory 3,900 miles west of Hawaii. Exploiting trade benefits and loopholes in U.S. immigration and wage laws, Asian-based garment manufacturers have flocked to Saipan, bringing in cloth and materials by the shipload along with tens of thousands of foreign indentured workers. Lured by the promise of good American jobs, Chinese, Thai, Bangladeshi and Filipino women and men pay thousands of dollars to recruiters and travel far from home, only to find themselves stranded on the tiny island, working 70 or 80 hours a week without overtime pay and living in crowded, company-owned barracks. Much of the sub-minimum wage they earn is taken for living and travel expenses, and they are bound to their employers by contract and by fear. The product of this indentured labor, bearing "Made in the USA" labels is shipped into the mainland U.S. market, duty-free and without quotas, for sale at brand-name retail outlets like the GAP, J. Crew, Ralph Lauren and other stores. Problem: Clothing manufacturers based on the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, exempt from certain U.S. minimum wage laws, exploited Chinese and Filipino women brought to the island to work in clothing factories denying them wages, forcing them to work in unsafe conditions, and work overtime without additional pay.Action: WITNESS collaborated with producer/director Tia Lessin and Oxygen, a U.S. cable channel, to produce "Behind the Labels: Garment Workers on U.S. Saipan", a film that explores and exposes the conditions under which Chinese and Filipino women are recruited and brought to the U.S. territory of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. The film focused on both the recurring abuses of worker rights, and a number of specific legal cases. ... Read more

Product Description
Mustangs were the original wild horses of the West: tough, agile, quick to learn-and unwilling to run with the herd. And, like the daring woman in the famous song, today's Mustang Sallies question the rules, challenge the status quo, and dare to make a little noise. Award-winning journalist Fawn Germer has written an engaging, provocative guide for women determined to charge ahead and succeed on their own terms. Based on original interviews with more than 50 world-famous trailblazers-from Hillary Clinton to Erin Brockovich to Martina Navratilova and Susan Sarandon. Now, every woman can harness the tools to becoming a Mustang Sally: - Be comfortable with discomfort - Don't sell out-compromise - Win arguments without making enemies - Manage the emotional challenges of leaving the herd behind - Create a sisterhood of support The world can slow a woman down, but the words of these wise mustangs hold the key to inspiration, motivation, and personal achievement. From Publishers Weekly: Mustangs are wild, tough and agile. Mustang Sallies are too, says one-time Washington Post reporter Germer (Hard Won Wisdom). They don't go along to get along at work, and that can bring troubles. Germer's advice, based on her own experience and her interviews with women as diverse as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Martina Navratilova and Susan Sarandon, is: Don't mute yourself, be bold, "take your power and use it for yourself." Germer intersperses short chapters quoting directly from notable women she has interviewed with thematically organized chapters ("I Am What I Am"; "Choose Your Battles"; "Verbal Combat") exploring various aspects of how to thrive as an independent-minded, outspoken, self-assured woman. Germer's advice is specific and illuminating: for instance, "verbal sparring is normal" in the business world, she notes, with clear advice on how to engage in battle. If you've ever felt judged and isolated at work for being who you are, Germer's book offers support, encouragement and strategies for coming through with your self and your goals intact. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Reassuring - Especially for Courageous Yet Criticized Women
Do you feel isolated and judged at work, simply for being who you are? Then you may well be a Mustang Sally, insists journalist Fawn Germer ("Hard Won Wisdom").Mustang Sallys (from the song) don't go along to get along, says Germer, which means great rewards, but also great trouble - especially in business, where women have little leeway as outspoken leaders.

Peppered with interviews from some 75 different women like Hillary Rodham Clinton, Erin Brockovich and Eve Ensler ("The Vagina Monologues"), Germer offers advice on being true to yourself, fighting for what matters, getting what you want and daring to make mistakes. While Germer suggests little in the way of self-examination, she will definitely reassure courageous yet criticized women who refuse to kiss up in order to move up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery
I just discovered Fawn Germer's books thanks to a friend who saw her speak in D.C. last year. What great advice for someone who is struggling career-wise.I am in a situation where I am unwilling to compromise my beliefs in order to fit in to a work environment where I am not respected or valued. To read this book and hear what ultra-successful women have gone through in order to just be themselves has given me hope and renewed energy.I am presenting "Mustang Sallies" to my reading group next month and I feel confident thirteen other women are going to find strength in Fawn's writings.

I highly recommend this book to any and all career women who have felt undervalued and conflicted about their careers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful moment of truth for strong women
This book will have a permanent place on my nightstand so I will find a little calm before going to sleep. Finally. FINALLY! Someone has explained all of my self-doubts and shown a way around them. This is a powerful book that I am giving as gifts to every one of my friends. It's required reading for any woman who has ever felt judged or criticized by others when she was absolutely in the right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting stories, well told
If these stories of women who made a difference despite all odds don't inspire you to achieve to your fullest potential, it's doubtfull that anything else can. The spectrum of women chosen is a testament to diversity. This would make a great holiday gift for anyone and everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!
I was given this book as a gift from a friend who said, "Now you'll understand what's going on with your life, Diane. You're a mustang. That's not a negative." When I read Fawn Germer's Mustang Sallies, I knew what she meant. I've always felt misunderstood and underappreciated. Now I realize I am what Germer calls a "trailblazer." I've never been one to go along to get along, and I don't kiss up to move up. That's hurt me in the past, but Mustang Sallies is filled with strategies to make me succeed without selling out. I love this book. (...) It's phenomenal. ... Read more
