Excerpt: Tru Takemitsu Takemitsu Tru, October 8, 1930 February 20, 1996) was a Japanese composer and writer on aesthetics and music theory. Though largely self-taught, Takemitsu is recognised for his skill in the subtle manipulation of instrumental and orchestral timbre, drawing from a wide range of influences, including jazz, popular music, avant-garde procedures and traditional Japanese music, in a harmonic idiom largely derived from the music of Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen. In 1958, he received international attention for his Requiem for strings (1957) which resulted in several commissions from across the world, and settled his reputation as the leading Japanese composer of the 20th century. He was the recipient of numerous awards, commissions and honours; he composed over one hundred film scores and about one hundred and thirty concert works for ensembles of various sizes and combinations. He also found time to write a detective novel and appeared frequently on Japanese television as a celebrity chef. In the foreword to a selection of Takemitsu's writings in English, conductor Seiji Ozawa writes: "I am very proud of m...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=222568 ... Read more

Excerpt: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (Japanese: Senj no Mer Kurisumasu Battlefield Merry Christmas)), also known as Furyo in many European editions) is a 1983 film directed by Nagisa Oshima, produced by Jeremy Thomas and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yuya Uchida, and Takeshi Kitano. It was written by Oshima and Paul Mayersberg and based on Laurens van der Post's experiences during World War II as a prisoner of war as depicted in his works The Seed and the Sower (1963) and The Night of the New Moon (1970). Sakamoto also wrote the musical score and the vocal theme "Forbidden Colours" featuring David Sylvian, which was a hit single in many territories. The film was entered into the 1983 Cannes Film Festival. The film deals with the relationships among four men in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during the Second World War Jack Celliers (Bowie), a rebellious prisoner with a guilty secret from his youth; Captain Yonoi (Sakamoto), the young camp commandant; Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence (Conti), a British officer who has lived in Japan and speaks Japanese fluently; and Sergeant Hara (Kitano) who is seemingly brutal and yet humane in some ways and with whom Lawrence develops a peculiar friendship. Like Celliers, Yonoi, too, is tormented by guilt. Having been posted to Manchuria previously, he was unable to be in Tokyo with his Army comrades, the "Shining Young Officers" of Japan's February 26 Incident, a 1936 military coup d'état. When the coup fails, the young army officers are executed...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=558578 ... Read more

Excerpt: Ringo Shiina Shiina Ringo), born Yumiko Shiina Shiina Yumiko), is a Japanese singer-songwriter born on November 25, 1978. She works both as a solo musician and singer as well as a member of the band Tokyo Jihen. On the Nekoyanagi Line website, she described herself as "Shinjuku-kei Jisaku-Jien-ya a person who performs in her own Shinjuku-style play)". She was ranked number 36 in a list of Japan's top 100 musicians provided by HMV in 2003. Yumiko was born in Urawa (now part of Saitama), Saitama Prefecture, to Ktar and Akiko Shiina, an oil company executive and full-time homemaker. She was born with an esophageal atresia in which the esophagus narrows as it approaches the stomach. Treatment of this involved several operations, at least one of which requiring her right shoulder blade to be cut open. These surgeries left Shiina with large scars on her shoulder blades, said to give the impression that an angel's wings had been removed. Her first exposure to music came from her father's interest in jazz and classical music; additionally, her mother had majored in dance in college and practiced ballet. Her parents owned a large collection of music, a piano, and a guitar, and her father also was a devoted reader of music magazines. She began to take piano lessons at the age of 4 and studied classical ballet starting at the age of 5. Whi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=669041 ... Read more
