Vietnam action with spectacular finish
Barry Sadler served in Vietnam in the 60s and this novel, set in 1970 in that region, was written with a comfortable flow that spoke of a familiarity few could unless they'd actually been there.

The Casca series began with a wounded Casca being flown into a hospital in Eternal Mercenary, and this book tells the story that led Casca to that point.The basic story is that a Viet Cong Colonel plans to destabilise US-backed South Vietnam by sending in teams of trained assassins to take out the top military and civilian figures in the country.Casca becomes involved when he is shot at the start and the Colonel believes him to be dead.

Of course Casca cannot die and rises from the dead to carry out a personal act of revenge.The story deals with the sparring between the two at distance and the attempts to kill as many South Viet administrators as possible.The action is fairly well spread, not too much and not too little, and Casca eventually succeeds in capturing the enemy plans and tips the balance against the communists.

The story then shifts to the jungle and Casca teams up with a tribe of Cambodes under a disreputable bandit called Phang who decides to help after payment of gold.There is a long chase and the Colonel becomes obsessed with killing Casca, something Casca knows and uses this obsession against the Colonel, leading him and his troops into a deadly trap of some originality, something that would send shudders of horror down the backs of most people!

Job done Casca returns to South Vietnam only to fall victim to a random attack and this is where he gets picked up en route to hospital.

A decent story of obsession and a trial of wits between two tough adversaries.

Casca Rises again!!
I think this was Barry Sadler's last book. (In terms of great storyline and overall characterization, leastways.)

The cover art captures Casca perfectly. He doesn't look like a muscled romance novel model. Great and highly addictive, this novel was never dull and boring like most of the rest after this one. It is without a doubt a Barry Sadler novel. No mistaking that here. Full of action and adventure, out hero dies twice, only to come back like the mythical Phoenix, to take his revenge out on a Vietcong commander.


Utterly fantastic! (Even reading it again for the 3rd time!)

ANOTHER GOOD CASCA READ
This is a fun series.This particular book brings us back to the beginning of the first book when Casca is brought into the hospital and the tale begins.Now I will grant you that Sadler will never be up up for any big literary awards, but this story, like the other stories in the series are simply fun to read.They are true page turners for those who enjoy this genre.Actually, when you examine the facts Sadler spikes his book with, it is quite clear that he has done his home work.After Mr. Sadler passed away, the publisher has attempted to contine the series with a couple different authors.Those stories are a complete waste of time and paper.Stick with the Sadler written books.All in all I recommend this one highly.

Desert suicidal mission for Casca
Its the late 50s and Casca and Gus (his pal from WW2) team up with ahardened band of mercs to rescue a couple of American civilians from theclutches of Tuareg tribesmen.A gripping tale but sometimes the plot slipsand you have to backtrack to check out that you didn't miss something. Average Casca novel
I felt the review below was a little harsh as the actual story itself was fairly readable.Obviously the personal preference of that reviewer coloured the overall rating, but part of the charm of Casca's epic story is history itself.That said I do agree to some degree that this novel felt like a history lesson, particularly in the middle portion which drifted away from Casca and concentrated on Cortes and the Spanish and took the reader through what did feel like a history book.

The strengths of this novel rested to a large part with the beginning quarter and the last quarter.The start was great; Casca a prisoner of the Inquisition in Seville and his torture and eventual solution to his imprisonment read very well.The latter part of the book dealt with the growing tension in Tenochtitlan and the eventual break out by Casca and his Spanish allies from the Aztec revolt.

I felt a three star rating more reasonable; not one of the best Cascas but certainly not one of the worst by a long chalk.

Too Much History
I really found the Casca books entertaining and I was intrigued that Sadler was the author of these books. However, a few times he just went overboard on the history. This and THE MONGOL are two of the worst in that respect. There just isn`t enough Casca. All Sadler has done is stick Casca into the middle of a history lesson. ... Read more

Fabio??
The story had some good parts, but the one thing that makes me want to puke is the friggin cover. Fabio? With not one scar? Man, this is just plain misleading. Casca is not some pretty boy, and even in #1 when he had very few scars...he still had scars. I have no idea whom the target audience was when this cover was done. Jeeez!

Cursed to be the worst...
I remember this one to be one of the most boring and unbalanced novel of poor 'ol Barry Sadler's. Was he writing them just to collect a paycheck here in this time frame...? Running out of story ideas? We'll never know.

I was hoping for something along the lines, and up to par to his past Asian adventure, Book #4: Casca the warlord. Samurai's and ninja's is what Casca should have been fighting with in these novels. But it wasn't meant to be...

Humour and Revolt
Casca gets involved in the Boxer rebellion in China in 1899-1900 andfights on the Chinese side against the imperialist British oppressors.Well, that's the condensed version, but I found it by far the mosthilarious of the Casca stories (the parade ground scene with the corpse onthe flagpole and the bandit raid on the Chinese village being two sceneswhich had me in stitches) and if you can ignore the blatant anti-Britishbias that screams out at you this is an enjoyable yarn of Casca acting as aBritish undercover spy and ending up fighting against them.The Chinesewater torture scene is very well done, too. ... ThOSE WHO LOVE THIS SERIES WILL ENJOY THIS ONE.
This work Sadler gave us has our Eternal Mercenary is Persia fighting for King Shapur II.As has been pointed out, this follows The Warlord (setting in china) and The Damned.If after you read the first Casca book, The Eternal Mercenary, these three really should be read in order as they comprise one continuous story.It is not absolutely necessary to do so, but more meaning can be found if the reader does so.

Being one of Sadler's early works, he is still meticulously researching this work and has not gotten sloppy in this one as he did in some of the later stories.The action here is great, political observations are astute and of course the Brotherhood is hot on his trail, although in this case, whether Casca likes it or not, they actually do him a favor...if you look at it a certain way.

For those of you not familiar with the Casca series; Barry Sadler tells the story of the Roman Soldier how actually thrusts his spear into the side of Christ thereby received an accidental drop of blood and is cursed by Christ to spend his time down through the ages being just what he is, a mercenary solder fighting in one war after the other.It is impossible for him to die, although he can feel the physical pain of death and does so numerous times, until the second coming of Christ.Now these are not religious books by any means, no, no..far from it.They are though well researched little novels telling the story of one man.The earlier works of Sadler are a cut above pulp fiction and are rather good.It is quite easy to get rather addicted to them. I do fear to tell you though that the last few novels in this series that were actually written by Sadler do not hold up and after his death there were novels written by others in this series, and to be quite frank, they were absolutely horrid.I must note though that the most recent writer who is attempting to breathe new life into the series is reported to be quite good.I have not read any of those works yet so cannot say myself, but he, the new author, is getting some very good review.

I do highly recommend this particular work...it is a good fun read and well worth the time.

A burning story - Casca roasted well and good.
Casca falls foul of the Brotherhood in Persia whilst serving the King Shapur II. A typically good Sadler novel, well-paced, informative historically and full of action. This follows on from The Warlord and precedes the Damned, so its best to read these books in that order to get the feel of the life of the main character. You can't help feeling for the main character as he is betrayed and sentenced to burning at the stake - but I won't give the plot away by telling you how an immortal man survives that! Casca meets the Huns
The bedrock of the Casca series is built on a firm foundation of easy to read passages, strong characters and an exotic historical setting.Some of the series lacked some or even all of these points, but the Damned had them all.The added fact it was set in the dying days of the Western Roman Empire made it more interesting.

Sadler wasn't the greatest writer but he was able to draw you into his stories and one of the peaks of his writing came in this book when Casca, tired of the fighting and emotionally wrecked by the sight of the Visigothic sack of Rome, retreated from civilisation and found himself drawn back to the place he last felt at home, Helsfjord (see Casca 5: The Barbarian).This part of the book brought home the fact Sadler could write pathos and was capable of projecting sadness and solitude, a lesson surely to us all that immortality isn't something to aspire to, but is in fact a curse.

Sadler's style was developing all the time and here he had a sub-plot which was missing in many of his novels.The sub-plot involved a Chinese courtier teaming up with the Huns under Attila and taught them the wisdom of war as taught by the scrolls of Sun Tzu.This is something anyone with an interest in warfare ought to study.The two plots converge later on when Casca is roused out of his depression and rejoins the Roman army in time to fight in the Battle of Catalunian Plains, one of the most important fights in history, when Attila is finally stopped.

The book slightly unravels at the end when Attila is concentrated on, and we see his death and burial.The last paragraph has Casca viewing the burial and this then leads the reader onto the start of Casca 9: The Sentinel.A good, interesting and very competently written story.

Attila meets his match
An interesting account of the Huns invasion of Western Europe in the 5th century, told through the eyes of Casca, fighting for the last time for the Roman Legions.The account of the battle between Attila's Huns and thelegions under Aetius is well written.There is a poignant part early onwhen he returns to a favourite place we read about in an earlier novel, andone can't help but feel for the character.Certainly well worth a read.

Well told story.
I liked this book for a couple of reasons. The first, and most obvious is that it is just a plain old well written story.

The second is the feeling of familiarity in some of the things Casca experiences here. Twice in the story he goes back to places that meant something to him in the distant past. This is something I think all of us have felt when walking through the halls of the school you attended as a child or driving by the house you grew up in. A Razor Sharp Adventure Read!
Barry Sadler will always be best known as authoring the awesome Casca series. But he also wrote some other gems before and in between Casca novels.

This is one of them.

RAZOR reminded me alot of a Casca novel in the more modern-day era. Chock full of memorable characters of differing kinds, from mercenaries to African despots, RAZOR is a full assault adventure read that only someone like the old Barry Sadler could write with pure authenticity.

Having been there and done that, Sadler could write firsthand on such experiences as combat on foreign soil, along with what really lies beneath the heart and soul of comrades in combat. Good stuff.

I miss this amazing writer tremendously. Another solid read by him is Morituri. Check it out.

For High Octane Mercenary Adventure
Barry Sadler is known for his popular series about Casca the Eternal Mercenary, who is "cursed" by Christ to wander the earth as a soldier until His return. Razor is a conventional mercenary story with everything you'd expect. Hendricks, the mercenary leader, accepts a mission from the US governement to enter a foriegn country and rescue American civilians from a despot ruler. It's a mission with small chance of success. The story goes through the collection and training of the mercs, followed by the mission. As always, the best plans break down when implemented. With stealth, explosions, and shooting battles the story rides to a climatic end.

All the books seem to be out of print, however, this series has a serious following and tattered old paperbacks are selling for $50, crazy.I searched fruitlessly many a used book store for a copy of any in the series.So until I found this Books in Motion version I was getting frustrated.So if you don't want to pay for an old paperback, try this instead!Gene Engene is incredible.He has the deep, richly masculine voice you would expect of Casca, and he performs the voices of other characters, women and old men very well without sounding phony.His pace and cadence sets to stage for the story as he controls the tension.And, very important to note that it is UNabridged!

Casca's oriental adventure
This was my first CASCA book I ever read and it had me hooked right away. Its a good story of a man journeying east to China to serve in the court of the Emperor Tzin. There's plenty of action, betrayal and humour scattered amongst the fighting to give it a well balanced feel. I particularly liked the passages referring to his stay in the inn at Dubrae. This follows on from God of Death so read that one before this in order to get the context of this story right. ... Read more

ONE OF AUTHOR'S BEST
This one has always been one of my favorite of the Casca Series.Sadler blends history with action and in this one even throws in a love interest.It is one of the sadder episodes in the Eternal Warrior's story but hold to Sadler's original story line and style.Like any of the Casca books, I do not read them for any great literary enlightenment, but rather to be entertained by a good story from a good story teller.This work fills that bill perfectly.If you are a Casca fan, you will like this one and I highly recommend.

Casca the Barbarian a hit
I think the best of the whole series.The characters are believable, the love angle some what unique to Sadler's novels, the battles the usual Sadler gore-and-guts, so you have something for both the guys and gals.I just love Glam's character, and its very true as I know one or two likehim! Definitely a hit.

A ROMANTIC ACTION ADVENTURE STORY IN THE TRADITION OF BRAVEH
This is a wonderfully written story that even the women will love. Casca finds a true love of his life only to be betrayed at every turn. Tragic but so very rare in realistic writing that only the great Barry Sadler couldwrite! Oh, how he is missed! ... Read more

Casca The Damned Review
A good story set in the dying days of the western Roman Empire.Casca returns to Rome to find Christianity has taken hold and has to prove his worth in the arena and gain his freedom.Fighting against the Goths he is captured and witnesses Rome being plundered.

After being set free he leaves the fighting and returns to Helsfjord and finds it deserted.This is a very poignant passage and brings home just what eternal life means.Eventually he returns to the empire to fight against Attila and the Huns and this is the climax of the story.
