2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating kindle experience (notes poorly done, no navigation)
Unfortunately, with most of the professional Shakespeare editions (Folgers, Penguin, etc), the digital "sample" you download only gives you the introduction, which tells you nothing of the formatting of the play itself. Since that formatting is essential to your reading experience, this is quite frustrating -- I thought it would be worth giving a brief review to warn other users off.

Given that all of Shakespeare's works are in the public domain, I'd like to think someone would have put together nice kindle editions of them. Given the strong reviews, I thought this might be it (also, I have my students reading the print version of this edition, so it seemed like a logical choice). Alas, my search for a decent kindle experience continues.

On the positive side, the lines of this play work well on a KindleDX, so the basic reading experience is comfortable.

On the minus side, they've done extraordinarily little work to convert this book into a Kindle book.

To start with, they didn't even take the time to format acts and scenes as chapters, so there's no way to quickly navigate the text except to search for "I.iii" or what have you (or a famous line in a scene that you happen to remember!). The table of contents consists simply of "Title Page", "Copyright Page", "Introduction" and the play. The "notes" (on the bottom of each page in the print edition) are included as raw text in the kindle edition. There's no way to make the kindle page line up with the print page (even though with the DX this might be physically possible), so the notes just appear as a blob now and again, which makes them awkward to use if not useless. Furthermore, the notes refer to "line numbers" which are not included in the text. The lack of line numbers is also frustrating for people trying to use the kindle edition to interact with a class where the print edition is standard. Having line numbers is to my mind quite essential if you're going to be working with the text with others.

The play, of course, is wonderful, and this edition makes it easy to read with just enough notes to help the reasonably experienced reader along (I find these editions much less annoying than the Folger's editions, which have an overwhelming number of notes).

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest villan
Othello boasts one of Shakespeare's greatest villainous achievements in the character of Iago. As Iago gleefully tells us "I am not what I am", and the dramatic irony of the reader knowing this obvious information and the characters in this tragedy so oblivious to it, heightens the suspense of this earliest of stage thrillers.
Othello, like all of Shakespeare's work, captures in many exquisite lines what it means to be human, and it boast in the character of Emilia one of Shakespeare's strongest female creations. Her speech about the equality of women's and man's needs at the end of Act 4:3 resonates very powerfully today, and must have been very cutting edge to its original audience. Her defiance in the face of tragedy and determination to do the right thing also endears her to this reader.
Othello moves along at a quick pace, and if you allow yourself to become immersed in Shakespeare's language and characters you will enjoy the ride.

4-0 out of 5 stars "I am not what I am"
I first had to read this book in my senior high school years. We must have read the play at least three times, watched the movie (with Lawrence Fishburne) twice and read some of the accompanying notes. The first time we went thru it, the thing that struck me was the deceptiveness of Iago. He stands out in the book as the embodiment of true evil because of his ability to manipulate and deceive. His presence fills every scene he is in and Shakespeare doesn't give us the chance to see any redeeming qualities of this man.

Character studies are only one way to look at Othello. There are countless books on the market that dissect the play, exploring it from all angles, explaining the themes that Shakespeare explores, whether it be inter-racial marriage, jealousy or the evil nature of Iago and I would recommend you search these `aids' out if you are doing a study ofOthello for your English class.

Apart from Shakespeare's literary genius, most of his stories also have a moral behind them. The ones that stood out the most in Othello were the need for trust in a relationship and the dangers of jealousy unchecked. If you haven't ever read this play, or made the excuse that the language is daunting, you are truly missing out on a masterpiece of English literature.

I consider this play one of Shakespeare's great tragedies along with Hamlet and Julius Ceasar but the only really tragic thing about Othello is reading the play and coming away from it without learning anything new about life. Now that would be a tragedy indeed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Shakespeare's Greatest Tragedy
I have read Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Julius Caesar, and I consider Othello to be Shakespeare's greatest tragedy that I have read to this point. The villain, Iago, is unlike any other villain. His character seems to be pure evil and is, in my mind, the most intense villain created by a writer known for his intense villains.I believe this play has a more enduring value than other Shakespeare works and can still be enjoyed by all today. It puts a clear boundary between good and evil unlike any other Shakespeare tragedy. The play centers on Iago's attempt to ruin Othello after he is passed up for a higher position in Othello's forces for a young, inexperienced soldier, Michael Cassio. He hatched an elaborate plan of evil and Othello falls perfectly into his trap.It is painful to read the play, with the knowledge of Iago's plan, if you develop sympathy for the unsuspecting Othello as he gets closer and closer to the final trap.I find it unbelievably ironic that so small an article as a handkerchief could start off such a chain of death and sadness at the end of the play, but I won't spoil the rest for those who have not read it.If you have not read Othello, please do.It is a brilliant, passionate, tragic, timeless work by perhaps the greatest writer ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare's Othello is the Ultimate Tragedy
Shakespeare's Othello is an interesting and dramatic tragedy. If you like imagery and irony, you will like Othello.Shakespeare uses the power of imagery skillfully to develop themes throughout the play. For example, recurring animal imagery is used to sharpen the contrast between people and beasts, showing how Iago and Othello begin to act more like beasts than human beings.Irony also adds much to the plot of Othello to make it interesting and exciting for the reader.Much of the irony used is dramatic irony because the reader knows of Iago's plot, while the characters in the play have no idea what is about to unfold. The relationship between men and women in Othello is another aspect of the play that makes it interesting to read.Iago's wife Emilia, for example, is very cynical towards men, probably from years of living with Iago.Othello and Desdemona's relationship is also intriguing. In the beginning of the play, Othello and Desdemona are seemingly deeply in love with each other.Othello, however, is rather easily convinced that his wife is cheating on him and becomes angry to the point where he cannot forgive Desdemona. He decides to kill her.As she is being murdered, Desdemona tries to protect her husband's innocence in her own murder.Another interesting aspect of the play which makes it stand out from other Shakespearean plays is the race of the main character.Othello is black and a Moor, or Muslim. This fact brings up issues to be explored in the play.Shakespeare shows the characters being separated not only by status and rank but also by their place of origin and their religion.Overall, Shakespeare's Othello is dramatic, well-written, and thoroughly explores how evil a human being can become. ... A must for any Civil War library. The sweeping histories of the War Between the States often overlook the men in whose blood that history was written. This account goes a long way toward redressing the balance in favor of the men in the ranks. The reader follows the soldiers from enlistment and training to campaigning.Attention is also given to oft-forgotten groups such as the sailors and black troops. No effort has been spared to include rare war era photographs and color photos of rare artifacts.Engagingly written by William C. Davis, the author of more than thirty books on the American Civil War.Writes professor James M. 5-0 out of 5 stars love it
great to see history this way!
this book has lots of contemporary photos and modern photos(of guns, uniforms, etc).it is everything the reader could ask for but...the HUGE size is a slight drawback.i found myself sitting it on a table just to read it.i guess i need STRONG MAN HANDS!...still love it though.
this book contains 13 chapters-including a appendix, index, and bibliography. it is very well written in an easy style to read and enjoy.it includes many aspects of the american civil war like:how the men were trained,a section on guns, the cavalry(with a section showing lots of swords),"rolling thunder"(equipmentused-meaning,
artillery pieces),life at sea, living in tents, soldiers involvment with prostitutes,
prisoners of war(both sides),diseases,in battle, and victory-the end of the war.
simply put-a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful into the common soldiers of this conflict
A well written and well illustrated look into the common soldiers of North and South of this conflict.

Nicely written and well illustrated. A good book to have for those interested in this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soldiers brave and true
An oversized, handsomely illustrated look at the Civil War, with emphasis on the soldiers themselves - camp life, uniforms, weapons, etc. Perhaps the most interesting and rewarding chapter, because it is so rarely dealt with in most other books about the war, is the one entitled "Willing Spirits & Weak Flesh," all about the sordidness of army life: drunkenness, prostitution, theft, and insubordination, among many other miseries. An excellent book that focuses on the human side of war, not the politics, the generalship, the maneuvering. An excellent addition to anyone's Civil War library.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading for military history enthusiasts everywher
An unrivalled source of information on the uniforms, insignia and appearance of the civil war fighting men.the Fighting Men of the Civil War covers subjects as diverse as the drill movements, the life at sea,Zouaves,Black troops, weaponry and many more. Each page is fully illustrated, includes more that 100 photographs and diagrams, as well as alot of pages of full colour artwork that provide the precise level of detail demanded by the enthusiast or any historians. Hundreds of photos of real items use in the civil war make this book one of the most enduring and popular military publications ever produced. Willian C Davis, has produce accessible reference resource for military history enthusiasts of all

This book should be One of the handiest one-volume sources of information ever assembled: serious, and surprisingly hard to find, information on the nation and its people is interspersed with the many colorful characters and incidents so often associated with this dramatic conflict.

Key interests and user groups;Artists and illustrators, Collectors, Costumiers, Historians, Historical societies and interest groups, Modellers, Re-enactors, Restorers, Special interest groups, Wargamers, Schools, Educational Establishments.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing account of the men who fought the Civil War.
This book is a fantastic source of information about the lives of the menfighting the Civil War.It is not focused on causes of the war or thegovernmental issues that fueled it except where these related the personallives of the men who fought. It was about common men: Yankee and Rebel. Itgives us a snapshot of their passion, the conditions they endured, theirjoys and sorrows.

The book shows us how common men of all walks of life, and nationalities became soldiers (or not). There are many excerpts andquotes from the people who were there. It gives insight into how theyfought, the equipment they used, the pride they felt and what it was likewhen it was over.

The pictoral history in this book is wonderful. Thereare pictures from the actual conflict as well as pictures of artifactsphotographed later.

Davis' writing style creates such a vivid picture ofthe world these men lived in. This book is a long way from the dry accountsmany history books provide.

I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Wizard of Gore
This is perhaps The Bard's least well known work, but a classic nonetheless. If H. G. Lewis had been a playwrite living in Old England, this is no doubt the kind of drama he might have produced. It has more blood & violence than the most exploitive exploitation film. Heads severed off, murdered children baked into a stew & served to their father, rape, vengeance, mayhem, insanity... all served up in the guise of classic literature. PERFECT!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Shakespeare's best but always misunderstood plays
Titus Andronicus is one of Shakespeare's finest plays. However, most people don't understand what it's really about. It is about love and how hate is born of love and how one cannot hate without the depth of love. But it is also a comedy, in a way. The things that happen are so horrible that the only thing you can do is laugh. But this is not the case dearing the scene were one of the characters, Lavinia Andronicus, is raped by Demetrius and Chiron the youngest sons of the Queen of the Goths. In that scene the last thing you can do is laugh. It is so powerful that you just have to cry and shrink into a ball. This is Shakespeare's most powerful play but people over look it because they don't understand it. But none the less this play is a masterpeice and my favorite play ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Since this was Shakespeare's first tragedy -it's understandable how he could write something so utterly out of character for him.Everyone must find their own feet to stand on.I find that the college students I teach respond well to this particular piece. The violence, gore and blood keep our up-to-date students involved. They also seem to respond well to Aaron. They are amazed at the evilness and the twisted plot.I will continue to teach this in my classroom and think this version is just fine for the beginning Shakespeare student.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody, senseless drama!
Quentin Tarantino must surely have got his inspiration for his senseless and bloody scenes from this Shakespearean play. For those lovers of blood and gore, you will be delighted in this play. Shakespeare starts with the usual beheadings, but then in a stroke of mad `genius' decides to up the ante and add mutilations, rape, cannibalism, betrayal, setups, murder and a host of other villainous acts to shock the audience. The only ones who will be disappointed are those who love eye gouging, but rest assured, Shakespeare has pretty much covered everything else.

The racism in the play is sickening. At every opportunity, Aaron the moor is self deprecating, equating his blackness with evil and calling himself slave, thick-lipped etc. I am hardly a fan of political correctness, but why the excessive name calling. It seems Shakespeare had this racist streak in him, which may have been a product of his times. Check out Othello and The Merchant of Venice for more evidence of this.

The `hero' in the play, Titus Andronicus was someone I had much difficulty sympathizing with, probably because of the improbability of losing more than 20 sons to a war, and his lack of mercy at the beginning of the play which started everything else. His near lapse into insanity is reminiscent of King Lear and both plays share the same theme of ingratitude: in Lear it is the ingratitude of his daughters while here it is the ingratitude of the state.

I would not recommend this book to those who want to read some good Shakespearean drama. Try King Lear instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood, guts and gore: a satire of revenge
Titus Andronicus is a tragedy of comical proportions.People are easily raped, maimed, and murdered at the drop of a tongue or arm throughout.Titus' feigned insanity brings wretched results for his edible enemies. The request for a detached hand results in hilarious conversation among a handful of volunteers.

This play reminds me of the scene from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail film where the knight has been chopped arm and limbless but still wants to keep fighting.

Revenge ends in a heap of chopped up bodies in Titus. No, the characters are not fleshed out and in great opportunity of winning your sympathoies; they are not supposed to be.The plot is bigger than the players in this one, and it works this way.Revenge does not take much about a person into account. In the end, only the demonlike Aaron keeps his tongue, but who will listen to him? That, dear reader, is the point. ... Read more

Please note this is a VB.NET version of our existing book Professional ASP.NET Web Services ISBN 1-86100-545-8

This book will show you how to create high quality Web Services using ASP.NET. It describes the standards that are core to the Web Services architecture and examines how these standards are integrated into ASP.NET. The processes involved in building and consuming Web Services are discussed along with in-depth code examples. The book concludes with three case studies, each examining a different application of Web Services, and presenting a complete solution.

XML-based Web Services are seen by many as the next big step in the progress of distributed computing. Promotion by a range of companies across the computing industry is creating a lot of interest in this emerging set of technologies and standards. Microsoft is one of the leading advocates, building support for Web Services into ASP.NET.

This book covers:

- Building and consuming Web Services in ASP.NET

- Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)

- Web Services Description Language (WSDL)

- Discovering Web Services with UDDI

5-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat outdated, but otherwise worthwhile
I'm always hesitant buying books written by multiple authors. I often find the writing annoyingly inconsistent and the overall structure lacking in cohesiveness. I'm happy to report that this book does not suffer from these conditions. It is a pretty smooth read and provides some insight into the ASP.NET world not provided by standard MSDN documentation. I realize this book is quite old at this stage, but for those still working in that environment it is still worth considering. Overall, I had few complaints with the book. Let's hope a second edition will be made available with .NET 2.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars now in VB.NET - and for version 1
I reviewed the orginal version of this book which was in C#. I've been lucky enought ot get my hands on the new VB.NET edition and it is even better than the original. I am more used to VB as it is, and I spent quite a lot of time translating some of the code snippets in the original, but now I don't have to! The book has changed a bit, it looks better than the first edition, and it is now completely 1.0 compliant. I've used the first book a lot, it's told me more or less everything I've needed to know. If you need to know about web services and you prefer VB then this is the only book you'll need! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Single Available Reference on The German Army in Poland, 1939
This is an excellent work printed by The Nafziger Collection as one of its series of "Orders of Battle Through the Centuries" (from 1600-1945.This is a unique publishing house producing 8-1/2x11 inch spinal-bound softbound books for reference by military historians.I recommend that the reader check the Nafziger's catalog if one really wants to delve into the details of a battle or campaign.

This book by William Russ concerns the German Army in the Polish campaign -- hence the name "Case White" for the English translation of the German operational plan, "Fall Weiss."The two major limitations are that the Polish side is not covered at all, and the role and deployment of the Luftwaffe is missing. The four chapters of combat operations are written from the Army Group level, as a series of daily reports from both Army Group South and Army Group North. As such, the details are missing, and the reader is directed to other works such as the "September Campaign" by Madej and Zaloga.

The author then presents a great deal of information is a series of appendices, including the campaign of Corps Kaupisch on the Baltic Coast, weapons, the Wodrig SS Evaluation Report, the Warsaw Surrender document, and complete tables of organization and equipment (TO&E), order of battle charts, and maps.

The maps supplied are simply the best I have seen to date on the Polish campaign, and there are 87 pages of them. The smallest unit shown is a brigade, but it is relatively easy to follow divisional movements. Most of the maps are daily situational maps showing divisional movements.I found myself wishing that such completeness would be readily available for other wars and campaigns, and indeed Nafziger offers such works if one's interest is the Napoleonic wars and others.

In effect, this is a companion book, supplying the map, OB and divisional movement information usually missing in other works on military campaigns in World War II.

I highly recommend the purchase of this book.Unfortunately I note that it is not a book stocked by Amazon, but it should be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Case MJ-12 is a practical and logical analysis of the issue. A good read.
This is a very practical analysis of the MJ-12 issue without unwanted speculation and rumor that clouds many books. The authors attention to detail and his ability to disect actual protocol with regard to military and political practices is very well presented. I agree with his asessment of the MJ-12 case because of his dedication to logic and truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars ugh
There isn't much new information in this book. Certainly not one of Mr. Randle's best books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take a dive in Ufology's dirtiest mudd puddle
The author concludes that the MJ-12 documents are fake... old news really. The only question is why this debate lasted for so many years? These documents should've been laid to rest a long time ago, Ufology has only LOST credibilty because of them. It's time to move on, and get out of the 1940s and 1950s. Seems like every UFO book today is about events from 50 years ago. Geez, where did the aliens go? I don't really care anymore, reading all these conflicting UFO books has turned me into a cynical nihilst. Obviously official "science" could care less... so why should I? And obviously religious people think UFOs are from Satan, so why should I care to get to the "truth" of the matter, everyone's mind is already made despite the "evidence".

Truthfully, I didn't read the entire book, I read the last chapter titled "Conclusions", and I skimmed through several other areas, but all I needed to hear was at the end.

On the bright side, this is a fine book if you're interested in the subject, or looking for a good sober analysis on MJ-12. Don't let my review hold you back from getting the book.

Well, of course it ain't over yet, I hear Stanton Friedman is gonna sell his 16? page review on this book. Time to muddy the water, again... it's money thrown down a bottomless pit. We probably haven't heard the last on MJ-12.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Roswell ... Or Just Out Of Grasp?
Kevin Randle has made a cottage industry out of being the world's foremost expert on the alleged UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico. While his two books focusing entirely on the events surrounding one of the cornerstones of America's growing UFO culture (mythology?) are quite good and stand-up very well as fine examples of investigative work lacking from much of the field, his ancillary works tend to be far less focused ... and that's largely because he tries to draw virtually all topics associated to the history of UFOs back to those seminal events from 1947.It's almost as if the author dismisses the fact that those events -- to date -- have yet to be substantiated.

That said, CASE MJ-12 is an admirable attempt to explore the possible origins to literally thousands of pages of supposedly "declassified" evidence linking Roswell and other UFO events to an elite oversight committee long referred to as "Majestic 12" (or "Majik 12" or "Magic 12" or just "Magic," depending upon whose opinion you accept).Despite having only seen a "representative sampling" (Randle's term, not mine), he feels compelled and competent to pass judgment over an entire body of paperwork he hasn't examined, and this investigative leap undermines much of his prose.

The book reads as if written very quickly. In fact, there are several long passages that almost appear as 'cut and paste' work, interspersed throughout the tome; interestingly enough, this 'cut-and-paste' is Randle's prime argument against accepting any of the MJ-12 papers as "credible."After finishing the work, you'll really understand the man's appreciation of the word "provenance."

Sadly, Randle stumbles in the book's second half, venturing easily into territory all-too-familiar these days in the endeavors of Ufology; he spends a fair portion of text 'bashing' others in the field for their failure to reach the same conclusions he has.As he's concluded a handful of the MJ papers are fradulent, he believes everyone should. In this respect, his arguments are weak ... especially given the fact that the foundation of his assertion is predicated on the outcome of a 'word game' played with a retired military officer (Kaufman) who, admittedly, can neither confirm nor deny the said committee's existence.

Still, CASE MJ-12 is entertaining in its first half, when Randle is dealing with those MJ 12 papers he has reviewed, and this is definitely worth reading. In the latter half, he delves (or tries to) into the psychology associated to MJ-12, if such a secret committee existed, and what the political and/or social ramifications would've been. For those familiar with the events of Roswell, CASE MJ-12 makes for adequate reading.Randle's insistence on spending time recounting (and recounting and recounting!) the Roswell events sadly grounds the prose; instead, he could've engaged readers with his own speculative theories associated to UFO crash retrievals.

For reasons beyond logic, Randle also feels compelled to tack on an extra chapter -- an appendix dealing solely with a con man's hoax associated to a UFO crash in Africa.Perhaps Randle believed that, by presenting events so obviously fabricated, the thinner of his arguments would be strengthened, but that isn't the way truly inquiring minds really think. ...
