Product Description
This is a collection of essays by one of the leading scholars of Chinese history, Patricia Buckley. In the essays she has selected for this fascinating volume, Professor Ebrey explores features of the Chinese family, gender and kinship systems as practices and ideas intimately connected to history and therefore subject to change over time. The essays cover topics ranging from dowries and the sale of women into forced concubinary, to the excesses of the imperial harem, excruciating pain of footbinding, and Confucian ideas of womanly virtue.
Patricia Ebrey places these sociological analyses of women within the family in an historical context, analysing the development of the wider kinship system. Her work provides an overview of the early modern period, with a specific focus on the Song period (920-1276), a time of marked social and cultural change, and considered to be the beginning of the modern period in Chinese history.
With its wide-ranging examination of issues relating to women and the family, this book will be essential reading to scholars of Chinese history and gender studies. ... Read more

Product Description
Throughout the 1980s, the British Civil Service made enormous efforts towards developing indicators to measure the performance of government. How Organisations Measure Success analyzes these methods from their origins in the 1960s to their revival in the 1980s. The authors predict that this trend--with its emphasis on accountability and performance--is likely to continue in the future as government continues to delegate activities to agencies and as it looks for methods to assess their performance. How Organisations Measure Success also provides a comprehensive examination of the natural history of performance indicators across a variety of government departments, public agencies and private businesses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Guiding Book for People Helper
The book that is written by Dr. Gerald Oster and Patricia G. Crone has been a really guiding book for me in using drawings in my counseling ministry. Many insights I got from the book. The writers show us that its drawings test may be used not only for an individual counseling, but also to a marriage and family counseling. One thing from its writing that really impressed me is that the writers give me so many illustrative cases that I could easily comprehend their explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This book is a good addition to anyone's art therapy library.I liked it enough to buy a second copy as a gift for a fellow therapist.

Product Description

Case studies of individual language learners are a valuable means of illustrating issues connected with learning, using, and in some cases, losing another language. Yet, even though increasing numbers of graduate students and scholars conduct research using case studies or mix quantitative and qualitative methods, there are no dedicated applied linguistics research methods texts that guide one through the case study process. This book fills that gap.

The volume provides an overview of case study methodology and examples of published case studies in applied linguistics, without attempting to be a comprehensive survey of the innumerable case studies that exist. The case studies presented here involve teachers and learners of English and various other languages in North America and other parts of the world. Advice is also given about how to conduct and publish case studies.

Case Study Research in Applied Linguistics is designed for students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as other scholars seeking to understand case study methods and their applications in research on language learners and language users in a variety of contexts. Applied linguists working in other subfields will find the volume useful in their own research and in their supervision and evaluation of others' case studies.

Product Description

This classic text on multiple regression is noted for its nonmathematical, applied, and data-analytic approach. Readers profit from its verbal-conceptual exposition and frequent use of examples.

The applied emphasis provides clear illustrations of the principles and provides worked examples of the types of applications that are possible. Researchers learn how to specify regression models that directly address their research questions. An overview of the fundamental ideas of multiple regression and a review of bivariate correlation and regression and other elementary statistical concepts provide a strong foundation for understanding the rest of the text. The third edition features an increased emphasis on graphics and the use of confidence intervals and effect size measures, and an accompanying CD with data for most of the numerical examples along with the computer code for SPSS, SAS, and SYSTAT.

Applied Multiple Regression serves as both a textbook for graduate students and as a reference tool for researchers in psychology, education, health sciences, communications, business, sociology, political science, anthropology, and economics. An introductory knowledge of statistics is required. Self-standing chapters minimize the need for researchers to refer to previous chapters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Grad student needing book for MLR course
I needed this book for my MLR course. Glad it wasn't too expensive. So far it's been somewhat useful. Definitely a good resource to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good one to have on the shelf.
I bought this book as a reference, so I haven't read everything in it. However, it is an extremely useful book to have on the shelf. I bought it because I had borrowed it from my advisor at least 3 times in the last six months. I recommend this book for anyone who uses the general linear model on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars stats book
Easy to follow! Great for people who do not have a strong math stats background.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Although this is a comprehensive, detailed book and one that covers everything about Multiple Regression, do NOT be fooled by the reviews stating that it is easy to use, easy to understand, and written for those who are not experts. As I searched for this book, I was heartened by the reviews telling me that I could follow it easily and that it did a better job of explaining complicated issues. What a joke that was. This book was as difficult to follow, if not more difficult, as other stats books I have used over the years. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing the content and effort of this book, just making sure others aren't blindsided by how difficult it really is. And please do not accuse me of sour grapes. A classmate taking a difficult stats course showed me the book they were using, and it was much easier to use. Unfortunately, I can't remember the title or author of that book.

I wish everyone the best of luck with regression. Although I do not understand 10% of the topic, I'm excited by how it could help me with my dissertation. Just be weary of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for practicing social scientists
This is an excellent book for social scientists that run regressions. The book's focus in practical and has good discussions on violation of regression assumptions. This edition is actually an updated combination of a book by Cohen & Cohen's and a book by Aiken & West. The latter book has been heavily cited for its discussion of moderation analysis. I would complement this book with Wooldridge's excellent Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach (with Economic Applications, Data Sets, Student Solutions Manual Printed Access Card), which covers similar ground but with an economics focus. ... Product Description

Providing a fascinating overview of healthcare spending and cost-containment mechanisms in the US, this book explores the consequences of managed care for the community with particular attention paid to doctor-patient relationships. The author studies this significant relationship from a social perspective arguing that shifting financial risk onto doctors in a profit-making system seriously damages patient trust. In addition this undermines overall social capital, which in turn has been linked to health outcomes.

Including case study examples and policy implications, this insightful text explores an important, though little-discussed outcome of healthcare reform and will be a welcome addition to the current healthcare literature.

Product Description

In this book, the authors approach poverty alleviation from an atypical perspective. The thesis is that poverty can be reduced, if not eradicated, both locally and globally, but this will occur only if we change our shared narratives about global free enterprise, and only if we recalibrate our mindsets regarding how poverty issues are most effectively addressed. They argue that poverty amelioration cannot be effected by the traditional means employed during the last century—foreign aid from developed nations and/or from non-profit international organizations. Rather, the authors present evidence which demonstrates that a mindset embracing initiatives developed by global corporations in response to the poverty challenge is significantly more effective. Global companies can alleviate poverty by seizing market opportunities at the Base of the economic Pyramid (BoP) with the implementation of three key processes: moral imagination, systems thinking, and deep dialogue.

This approach to alleviating poverty offers some powerful ideas backed by the support of some of the leading Business Ethics minds in the United States. These scholars, some of whom are on the author team, have created a book that is unique and provocative yet still ideal for courses at the undergraduate level.

Product Description

This book is about an ecological-interpretive image of "the basics." Essays detailing everyday, lived events in classroom life are presented to help readers see beneath the surface ordinariness of these events to uncover and examine the underlying complex and contested meanings they contain. Readers are invited to imagine what would happen to our understanding of teaching and learning if we stepped away from the image of basics-as-breakdown under which education labors today – an image of fragmentation, isolation, and the consequent dispensing, manipulation and control of the smallest, simplest, most meaningless bits and pieces of the living inheritances that are entrusted to teachers and learners in schools. By involving readers in re-thinking the idea of the "basics" in educational theory and practice, this book offers a more generous, rigorous, difficult, and pleasurable image of what this term might mean in the living work of teachers and learners.

This is a valuable text for practicing teachers and student-teachers interested in re-imagining what is basic to their work and the work of their students. It also provides examples of interpretive inquiry that will be helpful for graduate students and scholars in the areas of curriculum, teaching, and learning who are interested in pursuing this form of research and writing.

The Second Edition:

  • is guided by the view that thinking the world together is a form of ecological thinking
  • adds chapters that take up the ecological aspects of this vision, the hermeneutic aspects, and curricular aspects in the areas of mathematics, reading and writing, and social studies; included also are chapters on child development, information and communications technologies, and more
  • proposes a version of "the basics" that asks teachers to be public intellectuals who think about the world, who think about the knowledge we have inherited and to which we are offering our students living, breathing access

Finally, here is a book examining Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and its impact over the lifespan. Most of the published literature and media coverage has focused on ADD in childhood, with debates centering on the use of various medications in its treatment.

In Attention Deficit Disorder, Dr. Quinn looks beyond this narrow perspective to consider diagnosis and treatment from infancy to full adulthood.Chapters address ADD and the unique symptoms and problems presented at each separate developmental stage. In addition to characteristic features of the disorder at particular stages, criteria for diagnosis and treatment protocols are provided. Dr. Quinn's personal and professional expertise combine to make Attention Deficit Disorder an indispensable reference for practitioners-who will be treating a growing number of ADD clients as public awareness increases. Product Description
This insightful new book sheds light directly on shame and guilt--interactive aspects of the human condition that are deeply involved in the development and treatment of alcoholism and chemical dependency. Contributors to this valuable book discuss the process of healing internalized shame within the chemically dependent client and among the family members. They explore creative techniqes that foster understanding and coping strategies--videotaping and storytelling with clay and stuffed animals. Professionals who are experienced in treating chemically dependent clients and their families explore shame and the healing of shame, while examining the culture within which both occur. A major focus is the destructiveness of shame and guilt--shame keeps the family from seeking help, erodes self-worth, and produces destructive secrets that cannot heal, and guilt may circulate freely between alcoholic and family members, so that everyone begins to feel responsible for the pain of others. ... Product Description
The impact of poststructuralism on thinking in the social sciences and humanities over the last decade has been profound. However, there has been little exploration of the implications of applying poststructuralism to a critical analysis of social policy. Today, with the decline of the welfare state and the emergence of "neoliberalism," policy makers urgently need new tools of analysis in order to rethink the relationship between citizens and the state. Putting constant emphasis on the theme of citizenship, Poststructuralism, Citizenship and Social Policy shows how poststructuralist ideas can be usefully applied in the areas of welfare, health, education, and science and technology policy. It is valuable reading for students and researchers in welfare studies, the sociology of health and medicine, political studies, social work, social administration, and education. ... Read more

Crawford addresses--among other issues--women's roles in the religious upheaval of the Reformation, civil wars, and Commonwealth; and the significance of religion to contemporary women and their range of practices and beliefs. In her wide-ranging study, Crawford takes full advantage of the latest in gender scholarship. ... Read more

Product Description
The movement from young adulthood through coupling and the transition to parenthood may be among the most universal adult developmental transitions. These passages hold interest for all of us, but especially for those who study the psychological, familial, and sociocultural components of development, all of which interact and influence each other. This book enhances understanding of family-life development by shedding light on the meanings that family members ascribe to the developmental process of becoming a family. This is achieved through qualitative analysis of narratives through which individuals and families explain themselves, their thinking, and their behavior. These family narratives are windows into individual and family identity, as well as descriptions of connections to others. The book addresses issues including identity, child characteristics, social support, and work. Each chapter includes a review of seminal literature, parents' comments and ideas about the topic, and a discussion of practice, policy, and research implications.
