4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Age Group Intended
This book was wonderful for my preschool class. It helped introduce them to why we have a Thanksgiving feast. As I explained to my student's parents, four and five year olds are much to young to be burdened with future genocide discussions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple telling of a complicated time
This is a great book for introducing the concept of the first settlers in America.Considering the targeted age, which I think is 4 or 5 year olds, I can handle some minor inaccuracies. It communicates on a simple level the difficulties that the Separatists felt in England, their courage to leave their homeland for an unknown territory, their lengthy time at sea, and their ideas about their unknown Indian neighbors which were corrected by the generous way the Indians helped them.It ends by simply stating that we still observe Thanksgiving today, inspired by this pilgrim's feast, helping a young child understand that we are still connected to these courageous people. It takes some complicated ideas and deals with them in a way that young minds can understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
I haven't purchased this book (and won't) because when I used the Amazon feature to "look inside" the book I could see the first page of text. The first sentence is something like "in the 1600's in England were a group of people called Pilgrims...". No there weren't. They were Separatists who didn't want to worship in the king's Church of England. Once they made their journey to Holland and then the New World, they later were known as Pilgrims for taking their journey. The first sentence of this book shows me that the whole presentation will so oversimplified that the story will not be told well or accurately.

Pass...

2-0 out of 5 stars History includes misinformation and bias
Thanksgiving is a harvest festival; a time to show appreciation for all we have.Teaching our children a biased viewpoint of the First Thanksgiving empowers racism to continue in this country. Popular renditions of the First Thanksgiving (such as this book) give children the mistaken impression that the relationship between American Indians and English colonists was one of mutual help, respect and friendship. This popular belief does not take into account the way in which the colonists persecuted the American Indians, sold them into slavery and drove them from their homes. Not to mention the epidemic diseases colonists brought to America, genocide and erosion of tribal soverreignty.Get to know American Indian history through their stories, captured by Gerald McDermott or other authors at another time of year rather than celebrating the dreadful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids don't even know they're learning history
I have been perusing children's books for historical events and people. This is a nice introduction to the Mayflower and the history of Thanksgiving. It gives enough detail that very young children will actually learn some history, yet it is short and to the point to keep their interest. The only fault is that I could not get a hardcover edition.

I like this one better than The Pilgrims' FirstThanksgiving by Ann McGovern. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book about friendship . . .
Two skunks (yes, SKUNKS!) find friendship on a tropical island, overcoming the "But he's a BOY!" and "But she's a GIRL!" stage of development. My sons and I enjoy reading this book together, and I use it every year in school for a project on friendship.

Sweetie is a little girl skunk, who likes to play dress up and take care of her doll Leilani. Petie is a rough and tumble little boy skunk who likes to climb and play pirates. What happens? Well, when loneliness overcomes the little skunks, you will find it amusing to see how funny Leilani looks in an eye-patch! I know my boys did. It is straightforward, and not cluttered with too many different incidents. Perfect for reading out loud to very little children, or special education students whose attention might wander.Gets right to the point, so that you have time to expand on your own. Some people might have a problem with the gender stereotyping, but it is a sweet story that shows how children can play together.

I have to admit, I first bought this book because I found it in a bargain pile, but it has become a family favorite, and a tool that I use again and again at work. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON"T BUY THIS BOOK!
Stop!Don't buy this book!

What Amazon/Random House FAILS explain is that this is NOT the original text, as written in 1989.

Half the original verse is missing!

And, whatever IS there, is out of sequence and makes no sense at all.

It is completely awful.

Shame on Random House!

The original book, copywrite 1989, is wonderful, a rare delight. We have our taped-up copy, still, and even though our kids are way too old for it, we will never give this one away.It was an all-time favorite in our house for many, many years.

The prose on the original book is lovely, with a musical cadence, and my husband and I can still recite the words.

This new "chunky" book is an abomination.

Oh, and the original was Made in America.Sigh.Those were the days.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Little Noisy Book -- 2003 edition
I ordered this book b/c my son and daughter loved the original (1989) book. But when I received this 2003 edition, I sincerely thought I only received half the book. Then I saw that the few pages I did receive were out of sequence and figured this must be the new edition. On the back it says "Originally published in slightly different form by Random House, Inc., in 1989 as a Chunky Book." And I thought, "slightly, my a**!" I was SO disappointed. And the saddest thing is that I think they cut out the best parts and left only a shell of the rest. I wonder who's in charge of the editing and how they got their job. If you want this book, make sure you get the 1989 edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars So Disappointed!
I am a great fan of Ross's original The Little Noisy Book and have a very worn version so I jumped at the chance to get the new book....but I am very disappointed. This version is very condensed (only 10 pages vs. 25 in the original). Furthermore, the pages in the new book are out of sequence. In the original book, there is a wonderful flow and rhythm to the text but not in this re-arranged version. While the illustrations and text are the same, this book lacks the sweet charm and wonderful flow of the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite book
This was my son's favorite book and now I am trying to find a copy for a friend because I don't want to give ours away.He loved the sounds, even before he could make them himself, and he loved particpating.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughters love this book!
Although this book is currently out of print, we received a copy as a hand-me-down and my daughters have read and re-read it so often it is now falling apart! They even remember the sounds of specfic items in the book (helicopters, a brook,) and will repeat those sounds when reading otherbooks that repeat those words. ... Product Description

Anna Katharine Green was the most famous and prolific writer of detective fiction in the United States prior to Dashiell Hammett. Her first novel, The Leavenworth Case, was the bestseller of 1878. Green is credited with a number of “firsts” within the mystery genre, including the gentleman murdered as he makes out his will and the icicle as murder weapon. She created the first female detectives in American fiction. Her amateur spinster sleuth, Amelia Butterworth, became the prototype for numerous women detectives to follow, including Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Nosy, opinionated, and tenacious, Amelia Butterworth engages in a sustained rivalry with Ebenezer Gryce, a police detective. In the interaction between these characters, Green developed two more conventions adopted by future generations of mystery writers: the investigation as battle between the sexes and between the professional and the unexpectedly sharp, observant amateur. This volume presents two of Green’s Amelia Butterworth tales: That Affair Next Door (1897) and Lost Man’s Lane (1898).

5-0 out of 5 stars The first spinster detective
Miss Marple had an American ancestor: Miss Amelia Butterworth, first fictional spinster sleuth, invented by Anna Katherine Green. These two novels, wittily narrated by Miss Butterworth, were published in 1897 and 1898.

Miss Butterworth is wealthy, keen-witted, minutely observant and utterly self-confident. She moves in the most exclusive New York society and has strict notions of propriety. Despite her outspoken, old-maidish ways, she has a kind heart.

Her debut as an amateur sleuth begins with a murder next door. The highly inquisitive Miss Butterworth notices some questionable activity in the empty mansion adjacent to her residence, and she prods a reluctant policeman into checking it out. Sure enough, there's a dead woman inside.

Sly old Inspector Gryce investigates, and soon he and Miss Butterworth are conducting competing inquiries. The complex case, full of mistaken identities and faulty deductions, is a fertile field for their very different talents. Gryce is finally brought to acknowledge Miss Butterworth's worth.

Which is why he persuades her to investigate Lost Man's Lane.

In a placid little village ninety miles from New York, four men have disappeared walking down a gloomy mountain road. Coincidentally, the three grown children of a (deceased) schoolmate of Miss Butterworth's live in one of the houses along this lane. And so Miss Butterworth pays the Knollys family a visit.

This novel is steeped in gothic elements. A phantom coach is sometimes seen rushing noiselessly down the lane. A mysteriously muttering old crone lives nearby. And the huge, decaying Knollys mansion has dozens of uninhabitable rooms crawling with beetles and spiders. Miss Butterworth encounters an uneasy welcome from the Knollys siblings, who behave quite strangely.

I love Miss Butterworth, and these two novels are a delight. I'd also recommend this edition over others. It's complete - and more readable than a digital reproduction.
