4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of "You"!
Michael has produced an insightful quick read that will benefit all people trying to improve themselves. It is sensitive and provides good thoughts for all.A lot of people don't take the time to think about others, they are just absorbed with themselves. This book can really help insecure people to become more secure with themselves and others.I recommend this read!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, I could have written it, but I'm glad that I read it instead.
This was a very interesting book. Just as the title suggests had I had the time I very well could have written this one. The book is full of some very common sense information that we all (me included) forget sometimes.

The book is broken up into very small chapters. That makes it great to read if you're short on time. You don't have to invest much time to get through a section, and as each sections isn't really tied to another section you don't have to "get back into the book" to keep up with it.

What I liked the most about the book is that it was pretty humorous. Each section has a witty title and each is ended with a quote or saying that relates to the section. I also liked that the author shows us, on many occasions, how he himself had fallen victim to some of the situations he describes.

This one was very easy to read, it was entertaining, and it kind of made me think "yeah, that's me..."

4-0 out of 5 stars Bottom line: no bull.
Michael Rosenbaum, [Your Name Here] Guide to Life (Barosum Books, 2009)

I've read a hundred books like this before. Most likely, so have you. Inspirational self-help stuff delivered almost aphorism-style, with the kinds of stories you expect to see in a book like this. So given all that, why on Earth would I tell you to read it? Because Rosenbaum's style, his delivery, is something you haven't seen before; I find his no-bull approach to what he's saying a bit paradoxical, but enormously appealing. Your mileage may vary; I can see where this sort of thing might grate on people who are more about decorum than the impartation of information. But if the idea of making small talk annoys you to no end, I think you'll find Rosenbaum's narrative style as appealing as I do. Give it a shot. *** ½

5-0 out of 5 stars This is like having a Zen Master and WC Fields in your back pocket
It is delightful to put into words all the assorted thoughts that we have during our lives in a concise manner and in an amazingly short amount of time. The author's words mannaged to mix wisdom with street-wise common sense into an easy to follow road map that I would love to and will pass onto my own children. This book lets us reflect on each of our own life experiences, reexamine the past and forge into the future. As I add my own thoughts to the end of Michael's chapters I know I'm writing new chapters for my own family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear messages in complex times
It really is important to be reminded from time to time to take a step back and really rejoice in what you have and not get bogged down in what you don't. This is one of the clear messages of this book. I strongly recommend it as a antidote to these complex times in which we live. Read it all at once or in short bursts but read it slowly and absorb the lessons.

Overall, very enjoyable and worth a read. Highly recommend. ... Read more

Product Description

Daniel is 35, successful, a high level professional and an accomplished academic - yet he is also a virgin, who fears that he will spend the rest of his life alone. More importantly, Daniel has existed in an emotional bubble all of his life, and has had no intimate friendships. In other words, he is not fully alive, and seeks psychotherapy because he is haunted by not understanding what is wrong with him. He is attractive to women, yet as soon as a woman tries to get close to him, he runs away. Lacking an inner foundation, he fears that women will annihilate him, like his overbearing mother who abused him as a child.

Quite simply, this book is an unprecedented achievement, taking the reader into actual psychoanalytic sessions and sharing with the reader Michael Shoshani Rosenbaum’s dialogues with Daniel, vividly illustrating his pain and struggle to transcend his existential plight.  Furthermore, as the author of two sections of the book, Daniel himself provides a rare, insightful view from the other side of the couch, illuminating the challenge and change experienced within the other half of the therapeutic relationship.

It is a compelling psychological adventure, fusing together the intimacy of the therapy with an account of the revolutionary changes that have occurred in the practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis over the last decades.  Daniel is like no one else, and yet he is everyone, making this book a must for every person searching for self-knowledge, allowing the reader to identify with Daniel and his struggle to become human.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Significant Event in Contemporary Psychoanalysis
The analysis unfolded by Dr. Shoshani is a significant event in contemporary psychoanalysis. It provides a fresh re-acquaintance with several assumptions and beliefs about the psyche, as well as a challenge to re-consider them.
As with any case-history, this one presents to us a man whose life had somehow gone wrong. But Daniel, Shoshani's patient, is not a ordinary man in agony. His pain is numb, his complaints unclear even to himself, and it seens that his soul-doctor, unlike the body-attending physician, has to teach him first to feel pain before being able to offer relief. Thus Pandora's box opens gradually, under continuing resistance, obliging the patient first to acknowledge the high price of the frozen existence he has been leading in order to avoid misery. Deficient parenting, deprived childhood, loneliness, infantile sexuality - all emerge in the course of the analysis, just as in the Pandora myth, before the slow dawn of hope. The latter finally arrives through re-experiencing the bond forming between the two men. The process through which a man, who at the middle of his life is still a virgin, turns into a proud husband and father, is one of the most moving case studies I have read.
Besides the patient, the book gradually acquaints us with the analyst as well. Shoshani brings to the encounter boundless curiosity, compassion and humility. He openly shares with us his brilliant insights as well as his concerns, doubts and even errors. Alongside with these, he makes broad use of his enviable knowledge of both classic and contemporary psychoanalytic literature, appropriately spiced with his literary and philosophical erudition. This way, the reader follows the healing process together with the maturation of an original psychoanalyst with a unique voice.
As expected, the crucial stage of the analysis unfolds with the emergence of transference and counter-transferene between the two men, so different yet so mutually bound under the circumstances. This is where Michael Shoshani musters the utmost of his clinical and theoretical knowledge, as well as his other asset - his personality. Within the professional boundaries, he interchangeably offers himself to Daniel as a parent, a guide and a friend; learning, challenging, apologizing and letting Daniel get to know him. It would be no exaggeration to say that, alongside the growing sympathy towards the patient, the reader develops a genuine transference, in the pleasant sense, toward the analyst.
It is only in later chapters that we learn that the two becomings - that of the man reclaiming his sexuality and that of his analyst being professionally ordained - are joined by a third becoming, namely, the establishment of a new institute. This is the Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis (TAICP) whose initiator and founding chair is Shoshani. In this sense too, this book is a unique document.
Another of the book's eminent features is the two chapters written by the analyzand himself. "Intersubjectivity" thus gains a novel sense.
Dare to Be Human artfully combines bold psychoanalysis with excellent story-telling, thus being suitable for a diverse audience of all levels and languages. I risk predicting that it will secure its place as a respectable Israeli contribution to the best of psychoanalytic literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talking Matters
Have you ever had a conversation for over five years which didn't go any where? Where everything you said didn't matter?Where going over the same problems, issues, feelings and emotions kept leading to a dead end and a closed corner?

Dr. Michael Shoshani Rosenbaum proves that words do matter. In the mouth of a sensitive, engaging, empathetic and skilled professional, words can save a person from suicide and emotional death.

"Dare To Be Human", Shoshani's ground working masterpiece, teaches those in the helping professions, and non-professionals alike, that what they say can change the course of another's life- and even save a life. With guidance, patience and care, and the skilled ears and words of a master helper, each of us can help our selves to find a deeper humananity, as Daniel did.

"Dare To Be Human" can give hope to those caught in a helpless "emotional bubble" and asssist all of those in the caring fields, caring friends and caring professionals alike to help themselves and others to be human.

Rabbi Richard Hammerman,
Caldwell, New Jersey

5-0 out of 5 stars Dare To Be Daring!
Dare to Be Human is daring indeed! For starters, the book bends the analytic frame by presenting an authentic and delicate privileging of the patient's voice, but privileging that voice with permission, which is most unusual in this genre. This becomes essential when exposure of the patient's story is so intimate as it is in this book. The author bends the analytic frame further by inviting his patient "Daniel" to contribute two chapters of the book himself.Having the benefit of Daniel's own voice mixing with that of his analyst gives the reader a real feeling of "being there," not as a voyeur as in much of the reporting of case material, but as an invited guest. One can feel at ease at being "let in" to the consulting room, where powerful and moving moments are recreated authentically from both of the participants' perspectives. In so doing, DTBH provides an excellent environment in which the reader can share and be educated in a lively and engaging manner. ... Read more

Product Description
A pair of insiders and a host of corporate directors reveal the all-too-human failings that lead to corporate mismanagement and malfeasance. Seymann and Rosenbaum argue that the corporate meltdowns of 2002 resulted more from a lack of director focus than a lack of rules, and they come up with commonsense solutions that can be implemented immediately. In Plain English, they dissect the corporate practices that defy logic, the questions that are never asked or answered, and the hidden traps that snare so many corporate boards. The Governance Game is required reading for CEOs and directors, for investors and consumers, and for anyone who wants to understand what went wrong with corporate America - and how to fix it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This was a good place to start learning about HCA. If you use this book to understand basically how HCA can be used to prevent excess calories from being stored as fat, and to aid in appetite suppression by increasingglycogen stores in the liver, you can then reference the most recentclinical trials (there are now 18 of them) showing that if you take the*proper amount* of HCA, you WILL lose weight with it. The only problem withthis book is it is dated, since the new research indicates a daily dosageof 4000 to 6000 mg of HCA for effective weight loss. This book doesn'treflect this new knowlege. But again, a good place to start learning aboutthis wonderful herb.

1-0 out of 5 stars complete humbug
It reads like completely scientifical, but especially when you are not trained, it's difficult to understand where the writer is wrong and where he's right. HCA for weight loss is complete nonsens. I tried it myself withno result and recently a scientific study pointed out that HCA has zeroeffect. ... Read more

Product Description

Characterisation of the shallow subsurface has gained in importance as civil and geotechnical engineering and environmental applications have become more dependent on a precise definition of geomechanical and geohydrological properties. A better understanding of the subsurface conditions offers wide-ranging benefits to governments, industry and individual citizens.

Subsurface geological modelling became an economic and technologic reality in the late 1980's, when competing 3-D geoscientific information systems were the subject of considerable research and evaluation, especially by the petroleum exploration industry. Investigations in the shallow subsurface impose additional requirements that have only recently become technically and economically achievable. The very shallow urban underground environment, where many infrastructure and utilities elements are located, presents the most difficult characterisation problems.

Subsurface modelling techniques have matured, along with modern data base concepts. The evolution of the Internet and Web-browser technologies has expanded information transmission and dissemination capabilities. Subsurface models are being integrated with decision-support systems to provide predictions of technical and economic performance. Yet even the most sophisticated of these models leave some uncertainty in geologic interpretation. A variety of techniques for assessing uncertainty have been developed and are being evaluated.

Product Description
AWARD FINALIST

To truly understanding Kata means really knowing your history.

All too frequently, martial arts practitioners study their art without truly understanding where it comes from, how it was developed, and why it was created in the first place. Indeed, many don't care - and if you feel this way, you should put this book down. For the rest of us, who have taken our art beyond tournaments, it is reasonable to expect that we want to uncover the past. We want to understand the where, why and how of martial art development. We are intellectually curious about our combative history.

To study the combative arts is to understand the circumstances of their development and to gain insights into the views and ethics of the societies that created them. As we travel back in time, we see consistent evidence of martial systems being influenced by those that came before and/or invaded. We also see the use of 'pre-arranged' fighting patterns kata to transmit proven techniques from one generation to the next.

It is this transmission of martial knowledge, through kata and other forms of communication, that this book will explore. The author will demonstrate that pre-arranged fighting techniques katas were used by ancient Greek, Egyptian, Asian, African and European societies. And that Poetry, Dance, and Song were also significant methods of preserving and transmitting battle-tested fighting tactics through the ages.

The purpose of kata training is not to become bound by the form but to transcend the form itself - to evolve. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, not much else
The book was ok, it had a few interesting ideas on development of martial arts and martial culture, but not particularly well written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was Very Disappointed in this book - the title and blurb seemed to indicate some actual kata application (bunkai) information would be present ... but there is not enough to matter to me. Reads more like a Masters dissertation than a japanese applied martial arts discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Working insight
As a goju practitioner with over 25 years experience, I found much of this work to be confirming of exisiting knowledge. However there are many, many clear insights which have thown new light on old topics!I found the book to be easy to read, practical, and offering a clear and detailed insight into the world of kata. This book, is a must have for any goju practitioner looking to expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of kata. The book is full of aggravating typographical errors...words missing and so on.The book needs revision with a view to correcting these mistakes which provide the reader with a source of real annoyance.Look past this, and the book should be on every goju teacher's desk for constant reference.Hooray! At last a classy text on goju! But martial artists of any style will find it excellent.Congratulations to the authors.Well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoughful and interesting review of the literature
The author has put together an insightful and thought provoking review of the available literature and provided some excellent commentary on the concepts involved in kata. A useful text for the professional instructor looking for deeper meaning as to the 'why'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring the deeper meaning of katas to gain insights
Written by a martial artist of 25 years' experience who has studied and practiced Isshin Ryu, Bando, Judo, and Boxing, Kata And The Transmission Of Knowledge teaches the reader about the deeper meaning behind ritual forms and pre-arranged fighting techniques known as katas. Chapters foster a better understanding of katas as means to transmit successful techniques from one generation to the next; the author scrutinizes katas that have been used in Greek, Egyptian, Asian, African and European societies since ancient times. Exploring the deeper meaning of katas to gain insights into the views and ethics of societies from which they originated, Kata And The Transmission Of Knowledge is especially recommended for martial artists seeking to better understand the nuances, purpose, history, and applications of the skills they pursue.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fighting Arts: Their Evolution from Secret Societies to Modern Times
How did the martial arts begin? In this insightful and information book, author and martial artist Michael Rosenbaum traces the development of the fighting arts from their ancient warrior beginnings in different cultures, Asian and European,to their practice in modern times. He addresses their evolution, their place in the modern society of the handgun, their use in contemporary sports and their internal spirituality. A special note about terrorism. Clear, concise writing and informative content from a lifelong practitioner of the martial arts and a former member of the 82nd Airborne are among the author's qualifications. Excellent notes, bibliography and index.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative Primer
Michael Rosenbaum's "The Fighting Arts" is a great little primer on the subject.Just over a hundred pages, the book lays out the development of martial warfare, both Eastern and Western, with an introductory examination into the complexities and nuances involving politics, religious rites, and modern developments. He handles these items with flare and simplicity, making this book a great introductory read; however, as with any primer, it cannot be considered the last word on the subject nor does it really explore the cause, successes and failure so certain campaigns. Of course, it is not the books purpose, but it is a noted problem.

He also shows how fighting systems become transactional, transplanting form one culture to another. For such a heavy subject, he does a nice job in simplifying it for the reader. Interesting notes are also from society to individual martial adaptations and emphasis. He touches briefly on things such as myth and rites of passages.

A special note is that he addresses the new cultural myths of what and who are a superior martial artists and systems. He uses Bruce Lee as a main focus since so much has been written and said about him. After all, Bruce is a cultural icon that did popularly promote the martial arts through film. While is critique of the Bruce lee phenomena is brief and could have been a little more developed, his over all points about the overstatements of Bruce Lee are appropriate. It brings a balance to the Bruce Lee cult status so many have bestowed upon him (and I say this as Bruce Lee fan).

His further critique that modern mass media have created one dimensional heroes and myths is also well worth noting and very accurate. It is a sad fact that the further we have come along, the less sophisticated our stories have become.

He is influenced greatly by Bando, which is noticable when discussing martial artists and he does cite some of the same resources extremely often, which suggests he did not investigate some items further. All in all, as a primer, it holds up pretty well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good premise
The author has good ideas and excellent sources to back up his work. I think it's a very enlightening look at what our modern martial arts truly are and what they are capable of. Those who consider their modern art to be identical in form and purpose to the systems practiced in the ancient past will be disappointed and will likely strongly disagree with Rosenbaum's points. I also appreciate his discussion of Western martial arts. Most people are unaware of the existence of true "martial arts" in Western history, so it is interesting to see some of that information presented as well.
While I enjoyed the book, I only gave it three stars because of the often glaring grammatical errors present throughout the text. Realizing that it is impossible to write a book without such errors, it still seems that a better job of editing would have greatly improved the presentation and polish of the book. I liked the points raised throughout, but I found myself repeatedly having to go back and reread a paragraph because of some the grammatical errors.
Overall, a very good book with some excellent points, but it suffers because of a lack of polish. Worth buying if you are interested in the history and evolution of martial arts rather than just learning new techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good subject, terrible organization and writing
An interesting read. Pros include a very interesting subject, and excellent exploration into the myths of martial arts in their civilian interpretations and their relationship to the military skills taught exclusively for warfare. Cons include: terrible grammar; a very poor writing style that meanders without maintaining interest; a badly-organized theme which is poorly spaced; the author really doesn't effectively argue his themes, he merely states them, and footnotes other, better martial arts writers and scholars like Draeger. Overall, a great subject that definitely deserves more treatment that is dragged down by poor organization and poor writing. Worth a library rental, but not much there for purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and informative survey tour
The Fighting Arts: Their Evolution From Secret Societies To Modern Times by Bando, Judo, and Boxing expert Michael Rosenbaum, provides the interested reading with a fascinating and informative survey tour of martial arts from the depths of history down to the modern day. From the ancient cultures that first helped shape these personal combat arts to their assimilation into contemporary Western society, The Fighting Arts covers the changes in the styles, the reasons why the modern military doesn't train in "classical" martial arts, and so much more. The Fighting Arts is a wealth of information and reason, and confidently recommended for anyone looking to learn more about how these martial arts came to be what they are today. ... Read more
