Growing up watching the TV shows and later watching them on Christian TV, I am a great fan of theirs.I even visited their museum in California and just missed seeing Roy.I loved the book.I'm not a great reader but couldn't put it down. I even plan to read it again!

Time capsule for a generation
I loved this little book. Not a Hollywood whitewash, but a real story of two people whose love of family and faith shined for a whole generation because of their earnest values and huge hearts.

One of the best biographies about Roy Rogers & Dale Evans!
Chris Enss's, The Cowboy and the Senorita: A Biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans is one of the most heart-warming and well written biographies about the "King of the Cowboys" and the "Queen of the West." The personal stories of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are very well crafted, and the author is able to capture the essence and soul of these two wonderful people. Ms. Enss is articulate, animated, and amazing when she read excerpts from her book at a Barnes & Noble store. Fans of her wonderful book should really meet the author in person. I truly hope an audio version of this book gets produced soon.

Happy Trails, pictoral celebration,Roy Rogers & Dale Evans
A beautiful book for any fan. It has pictures that show the lives of Roy,Dale and family off stage and we can truly get a glimpse how genuine they were. Like Dusty Rogers said, "they were ordinary people living extraordinary lives". They were,and still are good examples. Their best example and inspiration are the lives they lived in family, and selfless service to others. They endured trials and heartache like all of us and learned to trust in God and family.This book is like a family photo album we have the pleasure to view for ourselves. I recommend this as a wonderful gift for any fan, or as a piece of bygone days when America had real heroes on the silver screen,who were heroes in real life as well.

I grew up watching Roy and Dale on TV but even though they were part of my life, and one of the reasons I still love horses, I learned a lot about them as people in this great book. Really glad I bought it.

A Truly Wonderful Book about Two Truly Wonderful People
who enriched our lives over five decades.

Cheryl Rogers Barnett has truly written a memoir full of Love, Respect, and Admiration for her late parents, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. She writes of the people they were, before she was born, the circumstances of her adoption - yes, Cheryl was adopted by Roy and his first wife - and growing up in the Rogers-Evans* (Roy's first wife died while Cheryl was still a young pre-adolescent child, Dale lovingly took her on as her own) household.Roy, bless his soul, was in many ways, a real cowboy who eschewed the Hollywood lifestyle and could live in the great outdoors - in fact one of their early homes out at Lake Hughes was in a wooded setting - with rattlesnakes! Knowing that this wouldn't work, Roy moved in closer to Los Angeles, but always made sure that his children were grounded and did not have airs about them.

Barnett writes about her growing-up in the Rogers-Evans household, and in reading it one kind of wishes that too were put of a family that truly lived by the Cowboy Code. Roy and Dale were among the kindest folks one could ever meet, and I sure wish I did. Both Roy and Dale were unfailing kind and considerate to most people they met. It speaks volumes that in the one instance Roy ever got angry at fans was when they chose to want to visit him on the day they were burying Cheryl's little sister, Robin, and only AFTER these uncouth and rude people insisted in visiting him, having no consideration for the grief of the family.

She writes of the wonder horse Trigger, of how George "Gabby" Hayes was as different in real life as he was in the movies. Gabby, bless him, was a trained Shakespearian actor who was more accustomed to wearing tweed suits than a bandana and chaps - still, he too made the roles his very own. There are the Hollywood stories and vignettes of growing up knowing John Wayne and so many other Western heroes and other television and movie celebs, written straightforward, (the reader will never have the feeling that this book is a gossipy read) of Nudie the Famous Rodeo Tailor whom Roy helped to get established in Hollywood, and finally of the last decades when Roy and Dale, seeing how different Hollywood had become (mid-1960s), chose to move out to Apple Valley, and live out their lives there.

Throughout it all, Roy and Dale always gave deep love to the people they knew, and encouraged their children to be the best and fine folks in their own right(after learning she was adopted, Cheryl underwent a quest to learn about her real parents, with Roy and Dale supporting her every way). With the happiness there were the tragedies, first Robin, then the young son who died serving in the U.S. Army, and the adopted daughter from Korea, killed in a senseless road accident. Throughout it all, Roy and Dale's faith in God was never unwavering and was always solid. They lived the true meaning of the Cowboy and Cowgirl Codes.*

*(on their very last record together, Roy, Dale and son Dusty recorded a song written by two great friends of mine, Chris Hillman and Steve Hill entitled: "God's Plan" ...that pretty well sums up the honest and rich meaning of the lives they lived.

A warm memoir of a time when the tinsel Cowboys were so very much real - and real people too, unlike the sad imitation that Hollywood has become these days. Thank you, Cheryl Rogers-Barnett for a heartwarming read, and for signing my Roy Rogers-Dale Evans lunchpail in Wickenburg, Arizona last April.

I loved this book! I became a little girl again with eyes wide open in awe of my heroes - Roy and Dale. Cheryl is very honest about the fun, the hectic schedules, the grief over the loss of her siblings, her rebellious nature in an innocent way, the strengths and weaknesses of her well-known parents who raised their family well, loved them dearly, lived a honorable life and had a lot of adventures in the way. Where the fans viewed Roy and Dale as super heroes ... Cheryl presents them as parents. I highly recommend this book!

This is a wonderful, warm and personal look into the lives of Roy Rogers, the King of the Cowboys and Dale Evans Rogers, the Queen of the West. This book gives the stories of Roy's life from his humble beginnings in Duck Run, Ohio and Dale's start in Uvalde, Texas to their present lives in Apple Valley, California. The stories of their joys and hardships are very touching. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fan of Roy or Dale as well as anyone who wants to read an inspiring story about the Hollywood couple who are heros in real life just as they were in the movies.The only suggestion I would have for the next edition of this book is that it needs an index.The stories are so wonderful you'll be wanting to see more photos and hear more of Roy and Dales personal stories

Great inspiring Story!
The autobiography of Roy and Dale Rogers. It is beautifully written, funny and touching. They were amazing Christian examples. It is so very rare for movie stars to be good examples, but they were. It was great to read about their personal lives after watching so many of their movies and listening to their music. They were just ordinary people who became famous. They were kind, loving people. My whole family just read this one aloud. It was awesome. A great read!

THIS BOOK IS OK NOT AS GOOD AS THE COWBOY AND THE SENORITA. I WANT A BIO ON ROY ONLY. HE IS AMERICAN MUSIC AND MOVIES, RADIO AND TV AS WELL AS THE SONS OF PIONEERS. HE IS AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT HISTORYONLY ECLIPSED BY CROSBY AND AUTRY. I LOVE HIS STORY WITH EVANS THEY HAD A GREAT MARRIAGE AND LOVE. BUT A GRAT BIO WRITER HAS TO DO ROY ONLY.

TRUE FACTS- DONT LISTEN TO DUMMY DUSTY WHO GIVES FALSE INFO. TRIGGER WAS HALF QUATER HORSE AND HALF THOROUGHBRED! ALSO TRIGGER WAS NOT THE FATHER OF TRIGGER JR. AND IN FACT HAD NO BLOOD TIES TO HIM AT ALL. THAT WAS CALLED HOLLYWOOD PR DUSTY!

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' fans and students of popular culture will appreciate especially the voluminous and what must be virtually definitive references and documentation on the more than sixty-year career of the cowboy couple. Although some of the material goes back to before they met and became married. The eleven appendices begin on page 117 and run through the start of the notes on page 485. In addition to the filmography and discography of each noted in the review's heading, the appendices contain material on each's radio and television appearances, song compositions, appearances in comic books, inspirational books by either one or both (many written with a coauthor), and a "log" of more than 275 "A Date with Dale" radio programs between 1984 and 2000 noting location, topic, song, and guest; these were 30-minute "spiritual talk shows" hosted by Dale Evans. Angel Unaware
This book was misrepresented in the its sale description and picture. The cover was torn and ripped and the book was in poor condition. No where in the ad was it stated that this was a used library book and it had library stamps in it and sign out cards and sleeves still in it. I was very disappointed with the quality.

Touched my life in a very special way....
I received this book for my 10th birthday from my parents, many years ago.At the time, I was very impressionable and this book made a significant impact on my life.I learned then that what we as fallible humans consider to be "imperfect" according to our standards of ignorance and bias is usually the most precious of all things to God.

The end of childhood innocence
Devoto describes a nearly idyllic childhood as she details Tabitha Rutland's tenth summer in 1954 Alabama. Despite the dark threat of polio constantly looming over the townspeople, forcing them to close down the movie theatre, swimming pool and any other place where more than a few people might gather, the tomboyish Tab's days are a blur of gallivanting about the neighborhood. When she's not playing rough-and-tumble games with the local boys, Tab's fixing up her beloved secret Fort Polio with Maudie May, daughter of her neighbor's black maid, and Maudie's two silent younger brothers. All four children share a love of Roy Rogers and all things cowboy, imagining those adventures as their own.

Subtly, Devoto manages to show that not everything is as it seems, as there are very clear signs of ever-present racism and unrest in tiny Bainbridge -- even in things like the treatment of polio victims. It's a testimony to Tab's coming of age, that she is ever growingly able to notice and understand how all the puzzle pieces fit together, and how they affect her once uncomplicated life.

Readers who enjoy this novel may also want to pick up Devoto's novel, "Out of the Night That Covers Me," which focuses on Tab's friend John McMillan shortly after the period covered within this story. Although Tab and her family aren't actually active parts of that book, they are referred to by John, and Devoto manages to interweave various elements within both books in a satisfactory way.

Though the above catch phrase was usually applied to the ole Lone Ranger westerns, the same could be said of this wonderful book: it takes us back to the thrilling days of yesteryear, the days of our youth when the only things that mattered, so we thought, were "Who's your favorite Cowboy?," "Who you like best, Roy Rogers or Gene Autry?" and "Who has the best horse, Roy or Gene (Trigger or Champion)?...

This book is about a time, the mid-fifties, when all the world was young, or so we thought, and the only really bad men were on the Silver Screen. This particular story is set in that last summer of the great polio scares.

If you are child of the fifties, especially a Southern child of the fifties, or if you want to find out or remember what it was like during the great polio scares of that day, this is the book for you. It is, in reality, a book for everyone.

ENGAGING
Tabitha "Tab" Rutland is a young girl in an Alabama town in the early 1950s. This is the last Polio summer before the availability of the Salk vaccine.

In order to try to stop the spread of this terrible disease that killed and paralized its victims, leaving many to live in "iron lungs", many towns and cities closed places where people gathered.During this last polio summer, Bainbridge closed the theather and public pool leaving children looking for adventures in other ways.

Tab, a tomboy, a great fan of Roy Rogers, seeks adventure with her best friend, Maudie May, "the lightest brown colored person" she knew. They had a lot of fun, but also were in danger at times.

They fished for the "largest cat fish" in the Tennessee river, built a secret hiding place in the woods. They meddled with the town bootlegger, Mr. Jake, and they learned many secrets of the people of their town.

Devoto is a very gifted writer and in this debut novel shows a well developed plot with believable characters.

This book made me laugh outloud at times.Very enjoyable.

I loved this book -- a very memorable book
Even after a month has passed, I still find myself thinking of this book, and when I was reading it, I couldn't put it down.Devoto tells a story of childhood in the South (northern Alabama) in the early 1950s, where fear of polio and segregation were pervasive realities.8-year-old Tab (Tabatha) is friends with a boy whose mother, fearful of polio, makes him stay in the basement while she's at work.Tab's other friend is Maudie May, a 13-year-old "colored" girl whose younger twin brothers (known only as the Brothers) tag along around, kept in check by their strong-as-iron older sister.It is a time when children really were free to spend their summers with little adult supervision during the day.As a result Tab and her friends have some amazing and funny adventures, including an unforgettable episode on the Tennessee River in a rickety rowboat they've borrowed.I laughed out loud at a number of points in this book, both from the funny situations and the funny commentary by Tab.

Roy Rogers Rides Again!
Dark Horse has done a very nice job in reproducing many of the old comic books, for those of us in our senior years, to 'relish in' one more time.Comic books were a big part of my childhood, particularly the Dell westerns.While original copies, of the early comic books, are available, many cannot afford them.Dark Horse has proiveded a reasonably priced alternative for a 'Twilight Zone' escape to a gentler time and place.I believe anyone interested in this item will not be disappointed as long as you are still able to read these stories with an eye into the childhood of your mind.You have to allow yourself to be 10 again.Don't read them as someone who has lived 60 years and can no longer 'suspend reality' sufficiently to ride the 'Happy Trails' one more time.We need Roy Rogers and his time again - when a man did what was right just because it was right. Thank you, Dark Horse, for Volume I.Unfortunately, I doubt there will be a Volume II, and more unfortunately, we all know why.

If you liked the old comics then you will really like the "new" old release of some of Roy's comics. They are a great read and bring back to those thrilling days of Yesterday------.

COWBOYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY HEROS
Roy Rogers, Jr. has the Happy Trails Theater in Branson, Mo.It is a tribute to his parents ROY ROGERS and DALE EVANS.

I was there this September for the Roy Rogers Roundup.I was roaming through the gift shop between shows when I came across this book -- ROY ROGERS COMICS.Just the title brought back pleasant menories from my pre-teen and teen-age years.It is a hardcovered book featuring Dell comics of the 40s.I picked it up and leafed through it.Roy Rogers Archives Volume 1 (Archive Editions (Graphic Novels))

I remember the first week of each month I couldn't wait for my father to come home from work.He knew how much I liked Roy Rogers and would watch for the Roy Rogers Comic Book to come on the stand.Sure enough, every month he brought home my favorite cowboy's adventures.

This hardback book has Six excellently restored stories of Roy's adventures.Trigger has his story of rescuing a frightened black,
lost, colt.

Elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 as a member of the "Sons of the Pioneers" and elected again in 1988 as Roy Rogers "King of the Cowboys"...Roy got his horse "Trigger" in 1938 and rode him in every one of his films and TV shows after that... The Cowboy Rides Away

Roy Rogers is an American hero. He was one of the greatest of American cowboys, and one of the nicest of men. In a world where idols often let us down, Roy never did. Until he rode off into the big sunset, like all great heros eventually do, he was King of the Cowboys. He still is. In this lush, beautiful book full of fabulous pictures, and wonderful commentary from Roy himself, picked by documentary filmmaker Georgia Morris and editor Mark Pollard, one gets a sense of the man behind the legend, and realizes they are the same man. What young fans saw onscreen was the real deal. Roy was exactly the same offscreen as he was on. Genuine.

I love this book. The best way to describe it would be to say that it is a picture book full of comments from Roy. It is those comments about his life, his fans, his humble beginning, his mother and father, and Dale, that are so telling, and give us a better picture of the man himself than were we to read all day long the words of some biographer. For fans of Roy, it's marvelous, a nostalgic look at an American icon we already adored. For those who know little of him, other than he was a big cowboy star, it will be a revelation, and they will understand why he is so revered. Quotes about Roy from Clint Black, Jane Russell, and Johnny Cash are among those on the back cover. My favorite is the quote from Emmylou Harris: "Thanks to Roy Rogers, a part of me will always be a 10 year old cowgirl." Dale Evans remarks in the book how she never got fan mail from the girls, because they all wanted to grow up and marry Roy themselves.

Between the covers are rare and glossy pics of Roy and his films that fans will embrace. What is brought out in the large and easy to read text, in Roy's own words, is a picture of an unassuming and genuine man, a man who loved his family, and adored kids. His Christian faith, his sense of right and wrong, and his compassion for kids, come through loud and clear. These things were a big part of Roy and Dale's marriage as well, and she comments on them in the book. But perhaps 'loud and clear'is misleading. Like all great heros, his greatness isn't shouted, it's whispered, and shown by his actions both in front of, and behind the camera. He was a caring man, with deep loyalties. He talks about Trigger, his horse, in such a way that no one can doubt how he felt about his old friend.

Those unfamiliar with Roy, outside of the legend, will definitely become fans after purchasing this lovely tribute. He wanted to be a doctor, but didn't get the chance. He had been married before Dale, his lovely wife Arline dying young, struck down by an embolism. For once, the cowboy had been thrown. He adopted four children, fostered another, and had nine all toll. He was to be touched by tragedy three more times. Sandy, whose first words to Roy had been, "Howdy pardner" was lost in service to his country. Debbie, of Korean-Puerto Rican decent, was killed on a church bus, on a trip to share her good fortune by distributing clothes to other orphans. His Choctaw Indian daughter, Dodie, was almost lost as well, but didn't make the trip. Robin had downs syndrome, and passed two days before her second birthday. Dale's book, Angel Unaware, helped many families begin a discussion on the issue.

Roy's own kids loved him. The same way kids going to the movies did. And later television, when Roy, a cowboy with good horse sense, realized it was the place to be. His live shows all over the country, and personal appearances with Trigger, were wildly popular with kids and adults. At one time, over 400 Roy Rogers items were on the market. But it was behind the scenes, behind the camera, behind the tragedies, that the real hero emerged. Roy tirelessly visited hospital wards and orphanages, trying to bring a smile and give back. Trigger went too. Yep. Right up the elevator with old Roy. When the studio didn't think the fans were important, he hired four people himself to help sort through and answer it all. He knew without them he wouldn't be, and had a genuine love for them as well. That's who Roy Rogers was. With few words, so much of Roy's life, who he was and what he meant to Americans, is conveyed. There are far more details revealed as you 'listen' to Roy's voice once again point the way toward what's right.

Just how big Roy Rogers was is covered in the book as well, between the wonderful pictures. Yet as staggering as the numbers and statistics are, they can not come close to painting a picture of how big Roy really was. Because he was more than these things. He was the West, he was virtue and honor, he was right, and decency, he was, our hero. When he rode off into the sunset for the final time in Apple Valley, in 1998, we lost something that could never be replaced. Our loss, was heaven's gain. A must have book for fans of the King of the Cowboys. Perhaps this wonderful quote from Roy, coming after a touching tribute to Trigger, who passed at 33, sums up how a true cowboy feels about his horse. It was after a trip to the Smithsonian that a way to have Trigger, a big but gentle ham who loved kids as much as Roy, enjoy the spotlight forever, was born.

I REMEMBER ROY AND DALE
I would never miss a Roy Rogers movie.Every Saturday I took my dime, a nickel for popcorn, and went to the local theater.There I rode the range with Roy, Gabby, Dale and, of course, the Smartest Horse in the Movies.It was a magic time for me, those two hours in the movie house watching all the action.

While I did not know it at the time (I was about 15 or so) I was not only being entertained, but getting a lesson in morality.The good guys were always honest and courteous.The bad guys were alway really bad.But in the end the Bad guys went to the jailhouse for trial and justice.

It was a surprise and a delight to me last May when I discovered that
Roy (Dusty) Rogers, Jr. had a theater in Branson, MO.Also that he had written a book about growing up with Roy and Dale.

His book, Growing up with Roy and Dale, was written in the first person.He was totally honest about himself and his family.He also showed Roy and Dale as loving parents who were not afraid to discipline them when necessary.He and his best friend, and adopted brother, had many adventures.

Of course, I had to go to Branson, MO to see the show.It was great!Roy and his High Riders sang all the songs Dale and Roy sang.It brought back many memories of the Saturdays in the movies, Roy's personal appearance at Forbes Field (Pittsburgh, PA), and at the fair gounds and his many rodeo appearances.

Roy, Jr. and the High Riders put on a great show.In between songs and comedy skits Dusty talked about growing up, he told us some interesting stories of things that happened during that time.

If you liked Roy and Dale you will Love Roy (Dusty), Jr.

TWO MISCHIEVOUS BOYS
I'm glad I read this book.It gave me a better understanding of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the people -- movie stars, mother and father raising their children.

Roy (Dusty) Rogers,Jr. and Sandy (an adopted brother) are great friends and, as children will, they get into their share of childhood mischief. He permits us to see the REAL Roy, Dale, brothers and sisters.He even told us some history and stories about Trigger.

Dusty (did you know he was nicknamed Dusty before he was born?) gave us a very personal insight into his family and their way of life.He told many interesting facts about his family.Their life, their love of each other and animals.These are facts that were never written in the Fan Magazines of the day.I read every fan magazine that had an article about Roy and Dale, but not one of them showed Roy and Dale as warm, loving, and caring people.

Dusty does a wonderful job of showing us the human Roy and Dale.Thanks, Dusty, for writing this book.HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU ... Read more
