5-0 out of 5 stars 6th Grade Book Review

The genre of The Boy Who Saved Baseball is realistic fiction. The theme of the book is that Cruz tries to persuade Dante Del Gato to coach the team. Also they want to know what the secret is of hitting because Dante Del Gato went 19 for 19 right before he left. The setting is mostly at Lucky Strike feild, but it is in Dillion Town. The conflict of the book is that the kids ask Delgado to coach them and Delgato said he can't.This book is a thrilling book because you want to know what is going to happen next. What I liked about the book is that Delgato chooses to help the team so they could win their big game.I liked this becuase before the team had no chace of winnind that game, buut now thwey have hope. What I disliked about this book is when Delgato disagreed to help the team. I disliked this becuase without him they were going to lose badly. That means he is selfish. Also, I liked it when they finally learned the secret of hitting.I liked this because all they ever wanted to know was the secret of hitting. Now they finally know what the secret of hitting is. I disliked when Doc died in the bleachersduring the game.I disliked this because Doc always supported the team and now they have lost a very important person in their life. This is what I liked and disliked about the book The Boy Who Saved Baseball. One of the best things that happened that I liked the most was the ending.Sorry I can't tell you. ... Author interview included. Thirteen-year-old Tyler loves spending the summer in New York with his cousin. Each day, they play baseball in a Central Park league. Tyler is a sharp hitter, so he hopes to become an All-Star. But he has a temper that is quicker than his swing. If he can't control it, he will lose his place on the team. There's trouble off the diamond, too. An awful accident has turned Tyler's dad into a distracted stranger. People tell Tyler that time will heal his father's wounds, but what about the hurt Tyler feels? He just wants to bat it away. John H. Ritter, author of the ALA Award-winning Choosing Up Sides, has created a realistic story of one boy's struggle with fear and forgiveness. Narrator Johnny Heller captures the emotions of a young teen beginning to understand the impact of his choices-on the baseball field and in his life. ... Read more

From "The Woggle Wrangler" to "The Wart", from the "Boogeyman" to "The Bear with One Green Ear", from "The Monstrous Broccoli Excuse" to "An Angry Poem by a Dragon's Mother", Dean Koontz's poetry is wickedly amusing fun.

With 225 million copies of his books sold, New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz has been called "America's most popular suspense novelist" but that only begins to describe his boundless talent and imagination. Following the success of his previous children's book, Santa's Twin, Dean Koontz has created a richly imaginative book of poems - now available on audio!

Move over, Shel Silverstein and Edward Lear; company's coming. From sneezing trees to reliable bunnies to food psychos, bestselling author Dean Koontz bowls his readers over with his wacky, wild, wonderful poetry in The Paper Doorway. Following the success of their earlier children's books, Oddkins and Santa's Twin, Koontz and illustrator Phil Parks embarked on an adventurous new path: funny verse (and nothing worse). With poems titled "A Cure for Ugly," "The Pig with Pride," "Stars, Mars, and Chocolate Bars," The Woggle Wrangler," "The Young Musician--Or Maybe Thug," and "You Get the Pickle You Asked For," accompanied by elaborate and witty black-and-white illustrations, the creative pair lets loose with a riotous collection that will tickle the funny bone of readers of all ages (especially those of the middle-school-boy variety). Sometimes gross, sometimes spooky, usually tongue-in-cheek, the verses tackle all subjects with equal gusto. (Ages 8 to 13) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Little Stories
I recently gave my 12 year old son the assignment to reflect on poetry that he had recently read. His response was that he could not do the assignment, as he did not like poetry and had never really read any poetry.

My response to him went something like this "but you love poetry, and you recently were telling me about all the great little `stories' you were reading in your Dean Koontz book."

His response "That's not poetry, I liked that book.It was full of funny little stories."

We had a long discussion after about how poetry takes on many forms and brings many different emotions. The emotions that were felt with Koontz's poetry made my son feel happy. All poetry is not like that and my son did later admit he enjoys poetry, especially Koontz's poetry.

"The Paper Doorway" is filled with humorous, whimsical poetry for children of all ages. There are wonderful illustrations on nearly each page and each illustration contains a mouse for your child to find.

This is a must have book for all young readers which will expose them to the joys of poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Pros:
Great Poems
Great Illustrations
Great hiding of the mice.
------------------------
Cons
There aren't any

----------------------

They hid a mouse in every picture and out of the ninety-something pictures i found all but four.... but it took me a long time.

The Man With Four Eyes (my favourite poem)

I knew a man who had four eyes.
He claimed to be so very wise.
Two eyes in the back of his head
Closed only when he went to bed.
He saw ahead, he saw behind-
This, he said improved his mind.
His claim I don't mean to deride
But the bus that hit him came from the side.

1-0 out of 5 stars From verse to worse
Some of the ideas for these poems are whimsical and cute. However, I mourn for the lost art of versification in this country.Koontz may be a good novelist, but if he writes a line of verse that scans, it's probably by accident. The rules of prosody aren't terribly hard to learn -- why is no one bothering with them any more?Worst of all, why doesn't anybody care?

Ah well.Koontz is trying to be the next Shel Silverstein, but Shel knew how to write a line that sings.Koontz doesn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Paper Doorway
I was taken by surprise to see a book of children's poetry written by Dean Koontz sitting on the poetry shelf of my local book store. His reputation is not from writing children's literature.I fould this book to be a wonderful collection of poems that are entertaining, easy to read, and cleverly written.Illustrations also help to make the poems come alive for the reader.A few of my favorite poems are The Paper Doorway (title poem), Plurals, and Do Trees Sneeze?

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be a ghoul...stay in school.
My daughter, Rachel, and Igot a kick out of the adventurous Oddkins about animated toys on the loose one dark and dreary night. We laughed until milk came out of our noses when we read the frightfully funny tale, Santa's Twin about an imposter Santa who leaves obnoxious things like snot in kids' stockings. In Rachel's opinion the more obnoxious, the better. So we were excited about the release of The Paper Doorway. Her favorite poem is Peg-Leg Zeg about a pirate who loves picking at crocodiles and subsequently gets several appendages eaten. What can I say, the kid has a weird sense of humor which, I suspect, she inherited from me!My personal favorite is A Cure For Ugly about a man who was horribly disfigured on the outside, but beautiful on the inside. What a wonderful way for collaborators, Koontz and Parks to get across the fact that books are the doorway to a kid's imagination and so much more. Dean's rhymes were exceptionally witty at times and poignant at others.Phil's illustrations beautifully complemented Dean's words. They're a winning team as evidenced by their long association, and the quality of their latest project, The Paper Doorway. Wholly delightful! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read, despite some inacuracies.
I'm going to start this review by saying that I've studied Santa Claus for a very long time, so it was interesting to compare the data I've compiled with that in this book. I have to say that, despite some historical inaccuracies involving dates and the assertion that Santa is, himself, an elf like the rest (he's not, he's a man, but it's easy to see where the confusion comes from. Even Clement C. Moore and Thomas Nast said Santa was an elf), this book is full of very fascinating information! The most interesting information concerns the deer, with precious few of the facts about Santa being historically accurate (for example, Santa's age), but there is still some rather interesting info about Santa that is close to the truth. Also, it contains beautiful illustrations as well as wonderful photographs.

Some highlights of this book are:

--The extensive explanations of how reindeer manage to fly
--The wealth of experts that put forth their ideas on the subject matter
--The section dedicated to those who explored the arctic
--The revealing of the identities of many of Santa's well-known helpers
--The "Reindeer Year" calendar and the accompanying explanation
--The "Mehling-Young Speed Test."

I could go on forever about this book and my thoughts, but the point is this: if you've always wondered if reindeer can fly, this is the book for you because, guess what? THEY CAN! And this book tells you exactly how they do it! Despite the not-quite-right facts about Santa himself, this is still one of the best books written on the subject of Santa Claus and should be given to any doubter at Christmas-time (though give them some more books on Santa so they can get all the sides of the story. I'd recommend "The Autobiography of Santa Claus"--As Told to Jeff Guinn, as well as a book called simply "Santa Claus" by Rod Green.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Convinced all of my children
We've had this book for 20 years.Bought it before we had children.Subsequently each of our children have read it on their own. They enjoyed it, bragged about it and it convinced them that Santa Claus was real. We only have one copy, which child inherits it?I'm here at Amazon to buy each child their own copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
This is a wonderful book. There are a lot of beautiful illustrations.I can't wait to read it with my kids this Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Capture some of the spirit of Santa Claus and appreciate the strength of the man and his mission

Wonderful is too weak a superlative to describe this book. Written in a factual style and incorporating historical events such as Peary's trek to the North Pole, it is one of the most delightful stories about Christmas ever written. There is also a detailed account of the land expedition by Will Steger, the only man to actually see Santa's village at the North Pole.
The chapters are:

*) The reindeer by the river: It was a wondrous thing. In which the author tells of his search for the true Santa Claus.
*) The echo of hooves: Searching for yesteryear's reindeer. In which Santa's history is detailed, past adventures are recounted.
*) The North Pole today: On the roof of the world. In which the kingdom is visited, the elfin life is described.
*) The miracle of reindeer flight: Mysteries explained, science revealed. In which the way he does things he does is discussed.
*) Eight tiny reindeer (Plus one): Santa's starting team and his helpers. In which a host of heroic animals and people are met.
*) Like down on a thistle, evermore: Work that never ends. In which the future of Santa Claus and his mission is pondered.

The spirit of Santa Claus within the concept of Christmas is a powerful one, in this book you can capture some of that spirit and appreciate the strength of the man and his mission.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cannot confirm or deny
I have this book, with some handwritten annotations. The author got a couple facts wrong, but then I used to be in the Air Force, worked in many. many different command posts and operational centers, and well somethings are still classified. Some good guessing and all!

Cute book, I love it, my husband, a "Santa Helper" loves it, our teens liked it (really!) and the few copies I have given as gifts were very well received.

If you have older kids this is a great book. ... Read more

The next, she's wearing a midriff-baring t-shirt and demanding the car keys. 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter takes us shriek by shriek through the process of raising teenage girls, including braces (the most expensive metal on earth), the telephone (seemingly wired to her nervous system), and, of course, dating (Rule #2: Keep your hands and eyes off my daughter's body, or I will remove them). ... This book is soo funny, I was having a tough day, Well, I bought an audio book and I was listening it in the car, I laugh soo hard, Go and get it!! you will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter
Sorry, but...it's hard...to...write anything, due to the fact that I (Well, my wife did have a little input) (LOL) raised three (count 'em--3) daughters. And, Lord bless 'em, we allowed all three to live. Although the session about the telephone rang very true back then, these days everybody has their own cellular phone, so tht's a tad out of date. Nevertheless, this is a "too true to be believed" read. Hilarious! I recommend it even for you poor fools out there without the pure joy of raising daughters. (Maybe sons also...) Charles A. Reap, Jr., author of "Devil's Game," and "My Friend Sam."

5-0 out of 5 stars Three fold.
I thought thisbook had three levels to it.Firstly informative for beleaguered parents.Secondly hilarious to the extent of major coughing fits.Thirdly I think it is a reassuring boost to all singletons who have felt sad at not having a familiy, that they are not missing anything.

Bravo Bruce on every count, it ticks all the boxes.

But that has not stopped Dave Barry from writing an entire book about them, dealing frankly and semi-thoroughly with such important guy issues as:

- Scratching
- Why the average guy can remember who won the 1960 World Series but
not necessarily the names of all his children
- Why guys cannot simultaneously think and look at breasts
- Secret guy orgasm-delaying techniques, including the Margaret Thatcher

- Why guys prefer to believe that there is no such thing as a "prostate" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five thumbs up
When I first bought this book, years ago, I thought it would last me part of the way across the Pacific (12+ hours).I couldn't finish the Introduction, and before I gave up, had disgraced myself several times by laughing out loud, wiping tears from my eyes, doubling-up, and ensuring the seat next to me became vacant.Flight attendants kept a keen eye on me all the way from Sydney to LAX.I had no better success on the return trip (12+ hours).I have progressed no further on subsequent, very determined, attempts to read this book, in all sorts of conducive "I WILL read this" situations. It is dangerous if you have a) had an operation in the past several years, b) have bladder trouble or c) try to read it when your wife is trying to sleep.Be warned. It is light years beyond hilarious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Fun!
Part of me wanted to be really upset with humorist Dave Barry for revealing many well-guarded Guy secrets in this book, but the other part of me got distracted from doing so by watching a neighbor fire a Civil War era cannon in his yard for no apparent reason.

Barry's mission (that he chose to accept) is to keep the reader laughing and this book absolutely delivers. Recommended reading for every guy, in order to learn more about themselves (as long as they don't get emotional), and for every female so that they can better understand their mates and what exactly they are getting themselves into.

No information is sugarcoated and no punches are pulled over the 200+ page exploration of the guy psyche. As long as you remember that Dave is writing a humor book intended to make you chuckle, you'll appreciate his insight and his jokes.

Even though this book is approaching it's 20 year mark, it's still a hilarious today's as it likely was upon publication. If you don't need a ton of substance with your laughs, you'll enjoy this title along with anything else written by the funniest man in America.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book was in great condition like new.
Was disappointed at the use of God's name in vane. I discarded book for this reason.I would not purchased this book if I had known this.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Funny it is Dangerous
Don't give this book to anyone in a hospital---they will probably tear out their sutures, or roll out of bed, with laughter.

Dave Barry's humor has the subtlety of a highway blowout--but without being obscene or offensive (as is the humor of too many comedians). The comedic timing is impeccable. It is said that the key to humor is truth. The key to Dave Barry's humor is profound insights into the ordinary.

For guys, in addition to the head-banging laughter, is the insight of being a member of a "community".That we are "normal"--for guys.

Women will find the book just as humorous and insightful, but for different reasons.

Okay, I admit that as an older guy, I find many of the alleged "guy" things to be juvenile.Which is to say, something from my far juvenile past.I may have outgrown many of these behaviors, but I still feel their motivation. It is in many ways reassuring, in many ways a cold splash of humanity. It is like discovering a beloved toy from childhood, I had forgotten decades ago.

This book by Dave Barry who is usually very funny, was a disappoint. Not very funny and not at all informative. A disappointment. ... Read more

Product Description

From the winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary comes a new collection of Dave Barry's greatest hits. From coed softball to airline flights, no subject is sacred!
Amazon.com Review
A Greatest Hits package to die for, in which the inimitable,Pulitzer-packing humorist applies himself to taxes, toilets, airbags, baseball, beer commercials, and numerous other American artifacts. Atypical bit, from a piece on legalized gambling: "Off-Track Bettingparlors are the kinds of places where you never see signs that say,'Thank You for Not Smoking.' The best you could hope for is, 'ThankYou for Not Spitting Pieces of Your Cigar on My Neck.'" Happy? There'splenty more where that came from. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I reread this book about once a year, and it is laugh-out-loud funny! My husband and I are currently reading a few pages each night, and we are enjoying every minute of it!Dave Barry's word choice, topics, and his ability to take everything to the extreme make each article great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Speaks the Truth!
This is one of those timeless humor books that holds up just as well today as it did when it was initially released 15 years ago! Dave Barry's mastery of the written word is at peak performance with this collection of columns. When they stuck the words "GREATEST HITS" on the cover, they were absolutely not lying.

Sure, some of the events and people discussed within these pages may be dated, but if you were alive for those times (or took a history class in school) then you'll still appreciate a fresh and hilarious perspective.

This book contains my all time favorite Barry column titled "Molecular Homicide" which tells the tell of the author having the flu and what happens when he is unable to get out of bed to monitor his young son's activities. This column alone is worth the price of the book. If you enjoy that column then there are plenty more that will tickle your funny bone.

This is a good starting point for anyone getting into Barry for the first time. It's a book that's easy to pick up whenever you have a few minutes and since each column is only 2-3 pages in length you can always come back to it later without having to worry about remembering what you read previously. Though don't be surprised if you find yourself reading some columns numerous times! It's a perfect book to keep in the bathroom for those quick visits, or in the kitchen for when you're microwaving some food.

If you make it through his "Greatest Hits" then I highly recommend "Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need," followed by "Dave Barry is Not Making This Up."
You can't go wrong with any of his books, but I found the 3 mentioned to be the funniest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave Barry is way funny.
I really enjoyed this book.I'm a big fan of Dave Barry, although I think he is much funnier in person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Check Your Brain at the Front Cover
Dave Barry isn't always funny, and I find he's better in small doses than in ... er... large buckets, but when he's good, he's good. Dave Barry's Greatest Hits is something to take to the beach and have a look at after one or two rum cocktails. It's light, jokey entertainment; the intellectual equivalent of watching, say, David Letterman. If you like Barry's Miami Herald column and are looking to read more, where better to begin than with the Greatest Hits?

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Dave
As an Irish person, living in a small town in rainy Ireland, it is unusual to find a book by Dave Barry..(hooray for Amazon). I don't know anyone who has any idea who he is, and why should they.. he is or was(?) a journalist for the Miami Herald, and is a well known funny man in the States, and no singular Irishman or woman has any reason to know of him.. and isn't it a shame. I love funny books. I have some great ones...but Dave is one of the funniest guys I've never met. This book is full of anecdotal ravings and mad perceptions but, you know he is really so funny, you don't care if he talks of giant carnivorous fleas somewhere in the mid-west, or helping his son with a science project waiting for the ants to bite. (ME thinks him an entomologist at heart).. but he has such a funny way of putting things, that no matter what the subject matter, you will read it and enjoy it. Let's face it, in this violent, crime filled world, isn't it still nice that you can have a smile put on your face! ... Read more
