A Classic
Rickles is the man, a great book filled with many great stories, the book will bring a smile and even a tear now and then!

Entertaining Anecdotes from a Comedy Legend
Rickles is one of the last of a generation of legendary comedians.His appearances on the Carson show were must see TV.His quick wit and timing were entertaining and always fired up a room.For all the entertainment that Rickles has given me over the years, I happily put down the 15 bucks for the book. For those of you whining about the books brevity, get over it.His act was based on rapid fire insults and shtick.He didn't do deep comedy (a la George Carlin or Lenny Bruce).The man's in his 80s.Just buy the book and quit moaning....

A Memoir That's More of a Joke Than a Book
This disappointing "memoir" is merely a series of supposedly comedic riffs on various moments in the life of Rickles. There are snippets of stories that go nowhere.Chapters are only a couple pages long. He gets through his entire first 20 years in 15 pages (with a lot of white space) and gives so few details that you have to wonder what he is hiding.

Often the short "stories" he tells come across as just set-ups for joke punchlines. He will mention an incident (meeting Bruce Springsteen, going to the White House, opening for Sinatra, getting the part in "Toy Story") and instead of giving any details or insights, Rickles just tells what he thinks is a joke about it and then moves on to the next chapter.The problem is almost nothing he writes is very funny.

There are also numerous subtle mentions of the Mafia--he even admits to calling a "friend" to quiet an upset audience member. Admitting to using goons to physically threaten his audience is not funny nor endearing.

There is so little about this man's life in this book that to call it a memoir is deceptive--it's just a series of gimmicky jokes that don't help the reader know Rickles any better than before.As a matter of fact, you'll come away disappointed that this man won't open up to let you see inside.

Great memoir
I've known about Don Rickles for a couple of years now. I thought he was really funny and i liked some of the stories he would tell on talk shows, so i got this and i think it's got some great story's about his life. Surprisingly I know most of the celebs he mentions. I recommend this book to people who know Frank Sinatra,Clark Gable,Jackie Gleason, etc. ... Read more

Don-da-Don-Don............Don-da-Don-Don-Don!
I wish the author well in his persuit of fame and fortune. Don A Rickels benefits from having the same name as the famous comic, however they are both different people. I am a professional Comic, Producer, and Publicspeaker.I tend tohave very high standards for all material I review.The information in the pamphlet was not very helpful to me. I wasdisapointed as I expected the real Don Rickels to have written this. Thatis why I bought it. I intend on sending this pamphlet(it's not even a book)back. - Good luck, and if your a comic, keep going on stage, and ask adviceof other comics always.

fun read
I bought this for my dad.Before I gave it to him I read several pages throughout the book.I know my dad will enjoy this book as the few pages I read were filled with humor and good memories of Mr. Don Rickles past.I love this guys humor and witt!

Not so great...
I bought the book as a gift to an old acquaintace of Rickels.He got halfway through before giving it up, by saying, "Enough with all the namedropping already!"

Poor Read
I have been a big Don Rickles fan for as long as I can remember.I bought his other book and loved every page of it.This book however, was a total waste of money.I don't understand what he was trying to do with this writing, but it was very bad.

A VERY SAD BOOK FROM AN EXCELLENT TALENT
I saw Don Rickles live several decades ago at the Westbury Music Fair. He cracked everyone up with his quick wit and talent. Ever since that time I've watched and enjoyed him often. He was even quite funny recently on one of Jay Leno's last Tonight shows (despite his obvious signs of aging and slowing down). I don't know what he and his co-author tried to accomplish with this book. It was not funny at all. I thought to myself, "does Rickles need the money that badly?" Even his "hockey puck" style insults fell flat. The letters are not real, and Rickles had to explain in the text of each letter who this person is (or was) by saying, for example, "you were great when you directed so-and-so". It doesn't take a student of comedy to observe that the crux of Rickle's humor is in his staccato of perfectly timed misanthropy. People find that his extemporaneous delivery is twice as funny because they're not the butt of his jokes (seasickness is a riot when someone else has it). When Rickles commits this shtick to paper it's a dud.
I've enjoyed several of Groucho Marx's and Steve Allen's books a hundred times more than I did this book (Marx and Allen were truly "men of letters"). 'Sorry, Don, your book is a waste of time and money. I should have bought one of your CD's.

Not humorous, and actually mundane, and actually sounds like he just wants us to know who he knows.I do love Don Rickles' humor and love to watch him on tv being interviewed, etc.

Had Me Laughing on First Page
Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire is the first novel starring the wise-cracking journalist who heretofore has appeared in the Morning Satirical New blog and in the satire news article collection The Worst of Jock Stewart.(Jock Stewart is rumored to be the alter-ego of author Malcolm R. Campbell.)Jock Stewart is an old school journalist who started his career by handsetting metal type and doesn't appreciate the nuances of the upcoming digital news age as much as his editor wishes he would.As the Star-Gazer newspaper transitions toward a paperless future where Jock will no longer "report" the news, but merely "facilitate" discussion between (unpaid) bloggers and Internet users, Jock struggles to complete his one last, real news assignment.Unfortunately, the missing race horse Sea of Fire just refuses to turn up; his owners can't even commit to admitting he's been stolen, and the #1 suspect is Jock's on-again-off-again girlfriend, last seen leaving Jock's house without her little black dress. First of all, I have to say that you shouldn't read this book for the mystery.I couldn't summon much concern for a race horse that may or may not have been stolen, and I never had any doubt about the mastermind behind the murder.The pleasure in reading this book is in the humor - rather in the vein of Joan Hess's Maggody series.Junction City is full of quirky, laughable characters whose daily activities are more interesting than the central mystery, and Jock Stewart's wise-cracking persona provides, even in third person, an enjoyable narration full of puns and word play. Whether it's Officer House, who, after accidentally shooting off his left nut (to be clarified as his sole remaining nut), no longer "has what it takes" to be a patrolman - or local author Cane Molasses who was roughed up by an unidentified woman for making the naughty slut in his novel "just like me" (to be clarified as the unidentified woman and not me) - Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire is full of fun, chuckles, and belly laughs.

The Man of Many Faces
Jock Stewart has a quick answer to everything. He is sharp, unafraid to express himself, and loves to make people squirm in their chairs while he digs around for the "truth". He has the answer to everything except love. As much as Stewart portrays an outward appearance of a sarcastic journalist who has his life under control, there are many signs that he is afraid to uncover the real truth about himself. Campbell brings his readers to a place where it is hard to distinguish between reality and our own versions of it.

For those that like authors like Vonnegut or Miller, "Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire" is a must-read. The book contains a lot of dark humour, moments of sexual tension, and characters that go back and forth between light and dark. Campbell's play on words and original plot is sure to keep any reader on his or her toes.

Old-Time Noir, Kicked Up a Notch
Meet Jock Stewart:irascible, sarcastic, somewhat reckless.He's Guy Noir freed from the confines of public radio.

Armed with a sharp wit and a (secretly) soft heart, Jock sets out to investigate the theft of the mayor's missing horse, Sea of Fire. For readers, arriving at the solution to the crime is secondary to simply enjoying as the colorful (and aptly named) characters become embroiled in a multitude of small-town hi-jinks.From the opening paragraph, Jock finds himself sucked into a world of deception, murder, and illicit trysts. Despite being set in modern times (as evidenced by the existence of Krispy Kremes), Sea of Fire has a delightfully old-time noir feel, kicked up a notch by fast-paced dialog and laugh out loud puns.

Malcolm Campbell clearly had fun writing this story, which takes the reader through as many twists and turns as a plate of the Purple Platter diner's spaghetti.Though his characters are obvious caricatures (such as Chief Kruller and Sergeant Bismarck), that doesn't mean they are in any way predictable.In fact, readers may find themselves surprised on several fronts, not the least of which being how much they've enjoyed the ride.
